Just wanted to say thank you for this video. 1st time truck owner and used my ratchet straps for the first time to tie down some boxes. Over ratcheted 1 strap and couldn't get it loose. Spent all evening/night/day yesterday trying to do it manually, find ways to undo it, etc. Finally found this video, saw your technique and within 30secs, it was loose and free!
thanks, the bit about turning the side knob with plyers worked like a charm. (i used vice grips because i'm a 47 yr old female and vice grips are easier than pliers for me). i had to watch that part of your video about 10 times to make sure i was turning the knob in the right direction, but after i watched your video i loosened it in about 2 minutes, after being confused for over an hour trying to pull it loose by hand!!! thanks!! youtube for the win again!! thanks to everyone who posts these helpful how-to's on youtube. so far i've got my lawnmower blade unstuck (couldnt pull the string to start the lawnmower because chunked up grass under the mower and i never thought to check that), fixed my dryer by replacing a fuse, and now undid my locked ratchet (that i need to use tomorrow to pick up a free washer and dryer from my friend who is moving out of state), thanks again!!

Awesome mine didn't have a nice handle on the bolt like yours but levering a screw driver in the bolt head groove got it moving. Thanks for the helped.
Yeah mine also didn’t even have a traditional bolt but I was able to use this concept with a needle nose pliers to turn the mechanism enough back and forth to loosen it enough to start freeing and unwinding it. 🙌🏻 Then found a doityourselfwithjoe video that showed how to wind it properly to prevent issues getting stuck, & I figured out I started out winding too much to begin with, which was problem number 1 after maybe it was started from the wrong direction to begin with! Thanks you guys with TH-cam channels for helping people out!!!

Thanks man got a few that are that way and dont know what to do. However you gave me the idea and first year using rachet straps for work. I was just working around it and not using it ....
I had 3 ratchet straps that were jammed after I tightened them too much. I spent a couple hours trying to fix it and this solved my issue in just a few minutes with a pair of pliers.
You fucking legend. All the straps I'd used previously have a screw that you could turn.. I thought this was a cap covering the screw.. This was helpful as fuck.
Mine has a weird not quite a bolt thing with a pin that holds each side in place so I used a needle nosed pliers to grab the pin & turn it slightly back and forth just enough that it started loosening and I was able to unwind & free it!
Wish I could add a picture of what mine looks like because it’s weird and is just the center winding shaft stuck through each side with a metal pin to hold each side in place. So I got a needle nosed pliers and grabbed the pin on one side and was able to twist back and forth just enough to loosen it enough to unwind the whole thing finally after it had been so tight & jammed it didn’t seem like it would ever work again.
If he was doing magic, it would make sense to shake to object so we can't see what he is doing. But if he is showing something, HOLD THE FUKING CAMERA AND HAND STEADY!!!

Well great. What if yours does NOT have bolts on the sides. No help here.
There should be a groove in the end of the shaft, insert a screw driver and lever it till the shaft turns to loosen the straps enough
