Ratchet strap Safety tip... Put the ratchet on the passenger side of the vehicle, if the load shifts and you need to pull over to make adjustments... You'll be out of the traffic side in most situations...
RedWhite&Blue 78 True... Plus, remember to ALWAYS keep an eye on load & to check it during EVERy fuel & or piss break..

There is a channel called *See Jane Drill* , and the host has that great teacher personality too. There are a lot of young men who grew up without fathers around. They missed out on a lot of life skills. People like this help bring them up to speed. It is a great service.

Reading the comments, I am relieved that I am not the only guy who struggled with understanding how to use these.
I am also grateful that you showed me about the half twist in the strap.... something I was never shown before.
I've seen them used but I had never used one... then I started a new job and those guys laughed because I couldn't get the ratchet to pull the strap... and also because I couldn't get some undone that were tangled up and thrown in a toolbox. "Don't you know anything? There's no way you've never used one before!!" Well, sorry, I went 50 years and had never needed to use one... and never thought about them and didn't realize they could be so tricky to newbies.

We bought a farm and literally had no clue about how to use anything. Thankfully, TH-cam has saved us many times. We didn't even know certain tools existed to help us keep up with the place. straight up, i always thought you didnt want a twist in the strap because it causes wear.. at least thats what i was taught.
He's right about the twist. And a load strap that vibrates could be loose, and you wouldn't be sure unless you stop to check it. Pros put that twist in, on BOTH sides of the load, because if it starts to vibrate then, it is definitely loose.

If you don't put the twist in the strap it will wear against the load that your time down and cause the strap to break or cut itself in half

Many will probably come here and say it's all obvious and the video is useless but it's not true. Less and less people have experience with tools and devices like this, less and less grows up in households in which those are used, for example I grew up in the city, spent all my childhood in a flat, father was doing office job so when I wanted or needed to do something I was basically reinventing the wheel, I had to figure everything on my own from scratch, didn't know about tools and methods that would make it so much easier and even if I knew about some tools I had no clue how to use them, I didn't even know what I didn't know. Videos like this make a great difference, you share the knowledge to people who wouldn't be able to get it otherwise, you put the very ideas and concepts in their heads so even if they won't remember the exact video something will still 'click' in their brains when they will be trying to solve some problems. Thanks for your videos, thanks for the work you put in all of this, thanks for explaining everything so clear so everyone can understand the content even if they had absolutely no knowledge and experience with specific thing you are talking about.

Here in the US, practical work, good teaching, available fathers who can and will teach -- all these things are fewer than what they once were. And practical thinking and good sense seems not to be so common any more.
We need to keep our families together, fathers teaching sons and the son's friends; and women teaching their daughters and their girl friends the practical lessons of life.
I know women that are great in the kitchen and enjoy cooking. But they did not or would not teach their daughters. How will these girls be good wives and mothers in the future? And the same kinds of things for the boys and young men.
What kind of parent are you if you don't teach girls femininity and proper womanliness?
Or, if you won't teach your son masculinity, courtesy, manly grace, good citizenship, and good leadership?
So many young fellows have opinions and stubbornness. But not a balance of Christian manly traits.
And don't neglect church. There is so much there that is good for you. And if you hold someone else's problrms or opinions about church... that's none of your business. Go for what God has for you. It only helps.

And there I was all along thinking they had miss a rotation.....
In my head "What's the half twist BS about? Oh.. that is Clever!" I love learning something new about something I thought I already knew!
Yes, a clever tip. But on the other hand; some manufacturers will tell you that their Working Load Limit is based on a straight, flat, untwisted strap. By putting a half twist into it the user is technically hindering the WLL by a small factor. So some manufacturers don't recommend it.

Like someone else said I’ve watched few instruction videos before this one but didn’t click until now!!!! Got my dream truck and have been having to haul stuff. Using a ratchet strap has been hard for me to get down and like a lot of people, I have an absent father so I’ve had to learn a lot on my own. This is the easiest to understand explanation! Practiced a few times and finally got it!!! Thank you sir!
These are the type of videos that I’m thankful for modern technology. I always felt stupid not knowing how to use a ratchet strap that I would avoid using one.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that needed help with this to figure out what I was doing wrong. I think I've lucked out and done it right like 1 in 50 times I've used ratchet straps. Drove me batty, especially binding the mech with the excess strap.
I worked at a Lowe's store. a lady come in one afternoon and I approached and asked for my help her with any projects she was working on.she said she had to get for straps right away to secure her son's wheelchair on the back of the SUV I said woman how did you get here if it wasn't strapped down??maybe I ask too many questions but I always get to the root of the problem.she said she has to buy them every time they go on a trip and she was getting low and didn't want to buy them in Pennsylvania. No sales tax in DE . I said why do you purchase more straps??? she said whatever she gets where she's going she cuts them off ...
well the store I was working at was very lenient with me helping customers a lot of stuff they have just two large for them to bring in the store to look at or dirty or wet. My department was plumbing. I asked if it would be all right with her if we could go out and look at the strap she currently had on her SUV well she had no idea that you back them off so I spent about ten minutes showing her how to pull up snug before tightening down then I asked her to do it so I could watch her she was just about in tears thanking me for all the straps she cut over by ten about a 10-years.. It pays to ask a lot of questions..

Started building my home at seventeen finished it at 23 sold my business at 48 retired became a gentleman farmer. Board went to work at Lowe's working for Lowe's. More then ten years now..My store comes in first or second and sales in plumbing in the district. The thing is my mind and my heart is content at night I sleep well...

I've been using ratchets for years and thought I knew all there was to 'know' about them and boy... I was wrong. That's why I love this man! Didn't know what that 'noise' was when I was driving at high speed loaded with materials tied up on my truck, it was driving me nuts and thought it was something failing with my truck, duh? Thank you Mr. Essential Craftsman, you deserve that title more than anyone I've seen on TH-cam! I will use that half twist always, maybe a full turn in longer areas between tie up points. I just wish you never aged... We need you for the long haul to teach us and keep us dorks safe, including our kids!

Equaling Scott's know-how is his vocabulary. He uses even common words in senses I haven't encountered before. Today I learned "windlass," "bitter end" and "worrying" a line. I literally helped write two dictionaries (Black's Law Dictionary, 9th ed. and Garner's Modern American Usage, 3d ed.) and I pick up something fresh in every one of these videos.

Yaaa and if the twist works its way down into the windlass, you will wish you hadn't twisted the strap.
@@Farmboy1544 how could that possibly happen? A twist creates a torsion force in the strap. A force that will be evenly distributed throughout the span length.
@@WeTubule Well of course the twist isn't going to move all on it's own. A twist is an issue when cranking the ratchet and it gets fed into the windlass.

i was at an auction picking up my winnings and not everything could fit in the suv so we got out the ratchet straps. I had the pleasure of teaching a man 30 years my senior how to use a ratchet strap. It’s always amazing how people try to pull the webbing through the windlass rather than just up and out
I'd like to add that if you are using the strap on something that you don't want to release the tension all at once on, you can extend the handle not quite half way. It will engage on the last ratchet tooth available. You can put just enough pressure on the handle to release tension on the dog, hold the dog in with a finger, and then manually allow the handle to back down against tension. This is useful when hauling motorcycles and you are strapping them down against the suspensions spring pressure that can spring back in concert with releasing the tension on the ratchet all at once. Also, it's important to have at least one full wrap of the webbing on the windlass and 2 is better with heavy loads. I've almost lost a dirt bike when the strap gave way due to not having enough of a wrap around the windlass. Great channel. I've learned a ton.

The best and simplest explanation of ratchet straps I've seen. I only use straps every couple of years, so a refresher is usually necessary for me. Much appreciated.
My friend asked me to record a video for her (I've used straps almost daily for my job for the last decade) because all the how-to on TH-cam are terrible. And she was right. This is the first of almost a hundred including shorts that I was willing to send her.

I'm typically confused trying to operate this ratchet strap tensioner device. If I skip a day or two, I must reread the instructions. It's actually funny if I don't get angry first. It's a well designed device with very few moving parts. It is deceptively simple, totally reliable, regardless of who manufactures it or who explains it. Take a look at the number of people who've written or read several versions of TH-cam instructions, millions of times, trying to learn how to operate it without getting it jammed up on itself, unable to release it. It's more like a puzzle than a tool. Sorry, but I can't help laughing at myself. I've thrown all (4) of those I bought across my garage several times. Whew!
Dude! You are the essential "everyman" that every other dude needs in his back pocket!! Your use of vocabulary, terminology, and explanation were top notch. I needed a video explanation I could send to my wife so she could learn to use these while I wasn't with her. Awesome advice. I have a small pickup truck but I’m a stickler with security so I use these straps all the time, they are an essential tool.
Same for bee hives, if only against the worst excess' of the winter storms.
Been using these for years, and still get to learn something new in less than five minutes.

lol im 52 and have used these a couple of times and have never worked out how they work so i stayed away from them , well long story short i found a couple of these on the road and basically chucked them in the garage and forgot about them , thanks to your video i stripped them apart (because someone had done exactly what you said and wound them up so much they were jammed ) and they are nicely oiled and working a treat now !! you are a superb teacher and exactly what the interwebs are for
