Thank you, as a single woman with no access to male knowledge live and in person these videos are a godsend. I find with so many traditionally male oriented things, even in instructions a basic understanding is expected, and I find that very frustrating. Wonderful video, I'm off to use my straps thank you again.
I just bought my first pair and didn't know what to do with it either haha. Didn't come with any instructions so I guess they all just assume people know what to do with them hahaha
Thanks for great video. Couple things I hope help others: 1 - Place your straps so you can see them, or leave enough of a tail that you can see it fluttering in your mirrors as you drive. If you dont see the strap/tail where you used to = STOP and CHECK. If thats not possible, get some reflective safety tape and tie it to your straps as indicators. 2 - Put the ratchet on the OUTER traffic side (usually Right/passenger side in North America) of the vehicle/trailer. When you need to check your ratchets you will be on the non-traffic side of the vehicle. 3 - Check your load after driving a few miles/kilometers and re-tighten. Loads shift and settle. NEVER assume. 4 - Get loading/cargo lights that face rearward so you can check in your mirrors when its dark. Stay gold.
Five years later, this video is still heaven sent! I totally destroyed two rachet straps, trying to secure a ramp, crate, and stroller for my dog, in the cargo area of my 06 Honda Element. Car has the room, and has built in brackets to attach hooks to, but the one thing missing was my understanding of how to work a rachet strap!! Thanks to you, Joe, I finally know how to use these straps! Luckily, I have two more straps which I haven't destroyed, and now I get how these work, so my senior dog says "Thank you!" Now we can still go on little adventures!! PS even the engineers I know couldn't explain this as clearly as you did!
Thanks Joe, after seeing and paying attention to some people ratching down a load i never was completly 100% there. After watching your video i finally got it, you made it clear like nobody ever. You are a pro.Thank you so much.
Thank you Joe for helping me and my sister figure out our straps. We are needing to strap luggage and chairs to a roof rack and this video helped immensely. ❤😊
I work with these every day and still struggled with set-up on the one that came w/the OTC rotor puller. -Not hard to get turned around in this world. Healthy new year to all!
For a first timer like me who never used these straps this was a very educational video. I was able to strap donw and pick my own IBC totes and save on delivery thanks👍
Your video made it so easy! I messed up quite a few straps watching other videos but now I know how to do it right and how to fix the ones I messed up! Thanks
First video that came up by 'Mudfords' was wrong and no comments allowed to tell them so. This is the proper way and easily explained for those who didn't know. Thanks.

Thanks. I'm on my way to Burning Man! I needed to tie stuff down on the back of my vehicle before heading out. My dad passed away when I was 4 so I don't have anyone to show me. Your video definitely helped. Thanks.
I Have a bookmark for this wonderful video. I also learned one could do the first part of the thread with no need to bring it back through the top. And, oiling all of the moving parts on the rachet helped release.
Watched a different video and they did exactly what you said not to do! Spent the next 15 minutes taking the straps apart and then putting them together as you showed. Awesome video!
Thank you! Glad it helped! I've seen so many people struggle with them. I actually had an old timer show me when they first started coming out with them. If i remember correctly he was a trucker and had a lot of experience with them. Obviously on a larger scale but same principle.
@@Doityourselfwithjoe By far the best ever… been 4 years since I had my first battle with one it took me 4~1\2 hours too get that thing unwound 😡😡 FYI NEWCOMERS you better pay close attention to this video, trust me it’s more fun and much easier going on backwards than it is coming off in reverse… I’ve struggled everytime using one these past 4 yrs but thanks to you I think I got it 👏🙂
Thank you so much!! After the 2 the videos I watched trying to figure out how to get this thing going, I was still confused. Your video helped!!! Thank you again!!
Thank you for the video. I inherited my dads 04 Ford Ranger with 49k on the odometer after he died last year. I've always drove a 2 door civic, so this is a whole new world for me. Im surprised my dad never got a set of these, so I bought some just to have some on hand.
They come in handy! I use them to tied down my gas cans when i need to refill them. No matter where you put them in the back they slide around. I also use them to tie down my propane tanks. Glad it helped!
Thank you. My girlfriend decided to get a mattress set to attach to her small car and her only saving grace was that she brought these along with her. And I say it was her only saving grace because I’m obviously still having to resort to this very helpful video... meanwhile she spent majority of time talking about hair care products that she still needed to get from target and foods she wouldn’t eat again all while scrolling comfortably through Reddit. The love of my life though.
I was having the issue of too much wrapped on the take up reel because I just fed the end around until it grabbed to itself thus wrapping the entire length of strap onto the take up reel and now cannot release the mechanism. This explained the proper method for using these tie downs. Thank you very much for a very clear demonstration.
It's not a case of 'properly' - just hook to hook is 'properly' but the extra looping shown here is interesting but may not work on different makes of strap - depends if the hook designs are the same or not.
Thank you, I bought some similar straps at Wal-mart and regretted it when they all tangled on me while in use. Your video helped me untangle them and put them back in. Let's hope when I use them next that they mess up again.
I watched a bunch of videos and my lock kept getting jammed. Explaining where the straps go in the beginning made all the difference as well as the demonstration after. Thank you!
WHEW!! Thank you for this video. A gent lent me his to tie a desk to my car and he showed me how to release it (pull the lever) but I didn’t know you had to hold it and turn it more. Thank you!!!
Best video I've seen on this. Excellent camera work and explanation. Been in the equipment rental business for years and this is a great video to use as a reference for renters and newbies.
This video was definitely a big help, because this is the first time I started using ratchet tie down straps as a alternative to using bungee cords, because I really hate using rope to tie and secure my load, but unfortunately overtime my bungee cables started to fail, but rather than using rope I rather use ratchet tie-down instead, because in my personal opinion using rope as a tie-down is a bit outdated and inconvenient, this video really helped me a lot.
Thank you!! Very helpful! Sometimes I come across things and I think “Wow! I can’t believe I don’t know how to do this!” I’m confident I can do it now.
Thank you! Now I know how to use these, there were no instructions or videos with the ratchet straps I just bought. Even if I figured out how to secure a bundle with these by myself, I wouldn't trust what I did to secure them because I've never seen how to do this properly. I want to be safe and I do not want to guess when it comes to safety. Thank you.
Tip: When using them on the road, give the long part over the load a twist or two before feeding into the ratchet and tightening up. This stops them vibrating or "humming".

if you're wrapping a hook around something that doesn't want to be hooked, loop around the inside of the hook 2-3 times.. I've had them come loose when I just put it straight through the hook like at 5:00
