    The Phanteks Evolv X case has been tough to get. It's popular, it's expensive, and it's still catching up with demand. The Evolv X (with upgrade kit) can support two simultaneous systems, both of which are powered by the Phanteks Revolt X dual-system power supply. In today's review, we look at build quality, cable management, thermals, and value of the Evolv X.

      Gamers Nexus appreciate the review but you didn’t really talk about all the watercooling options and how many radiators can be mounted etc. I think this was kind of geared towards liquid cooling with the upper and lower ports for draining a loop

      ok, the review I know Phanteks has been dreading, let's see if they managed to make a case with better cooling then what was required by the original 1998 ATX 1.0 spec, lol. To be fair Inwin and Bitfenix have also had difficulties in the past with cooling. (watches vid)
      They advertised ten 3.5inch drive bays, did they not include them as well?
      9 SSDs, 3 sleds not included, hmmmm.
      OK, not bad overall, lacks the drive bays I would need, and still very tempting thermals with a good look. Well done Phanteks, well done. I guess some BeQuiet drive-bay mods for the PM01 will be needed shortly. Last I checked they do not make a 40TB SSD in my budget range, lol.
      Great vid Steve and crew. B)

      While I love this case, I do have to say it really seems like they didn't put much thought into the dual-system capability - at all.
      Aside from the ITX motherboard rendering the top radiator bracket unusable, there is also a gap where the I/O shield meets the case as you can see slightly at 2:08.
      When customer service was questioned about this gap, they confirmed that it was an issue. Not really sure how something like that could make it to the release unless they legitimately just never assembled a dual-system build - which would be pretty weird.

    I've had this case for 4 years and i love it! i haven't touched it since i built it, using an x570 with a 3700x i used the wraith prism cooler, added a couple 140mm Noctua fans to the top, 3x140mm at the front and a 120mm at the rear and it's all worked perfectly to this day! I've just upgraded my cpu to a 5900x, and an AIO to cool it, along with a 32gb ram kit and a 3090 gpu (which is why i decided to beef up the proc+took advantage of all the last gen sales atm!) i haven't started work on it yet because idk if i want the radiator top mounted or front mounted lol. but this case will take anything from a single 120mm rad to a 420mm rad so there's plenty of room for AIO and or Air coolers.

    Thanks for calling out the other reviewer(s) that have hyped this case to the moon and back. A "This is fine" review from Gamers Nexus means a whole lot more than a glowing review from just about any other tech tuber these days. No case is "Perfect" and to claim as such without giving any real weight to flaws that can make or break systems for certain customers does everyone a disservice. Its all about finding those compromises and seeing if you can live with them or not depending on your build. I can finally make a purchase decision with confidence now after this review. Especially with that key note on the static pressure performance on the stock fans!

      Agreed. I think many people see such things and get upset cause not calling out problems where they are or at least being as candid as possible about it (down playing flaws with flashy thumbnails or just mumbling your way through them) only make manufactures lazy and complicit in a potentially endless cycle of bad product releases. I appreciate the work Gamers Nexus does cause they are the TH-cam equivalent of your most brutally honest friend. They wont sugar coat it, and that's the kind of honest opinion I value most.

    I have this case and I love it. I wish the top would clamp a bit harder and had some kind of grab point. The case is a beast to move around. Cable management made super easy with plenty of room to spare. I have mine air cooled on an FX 8370 using a Le Grand Macho RT. It idles at 21C and maxes at 49C. I have no other cooling fans than that, the GPU and stock case fans. The magnetic air block cover works. Taking it off, my temps rose a little. It's surprisingly cool and quiet, more so than my DB 600 case. There are so many fan and RGB pins in the built-in controller that doing more customization should be a breeze (see what I did there?). This thing is big and it's very heavy without anything in it. Removing the glass doors really helps with the build until you're finished. I had no problems with the drives installed on the back bay doors, but I was careful about it the cables. I guess my biggest gripe is the fact that it has no carrying handle.

    The sliding thing on top of the power supply is so that you an route your GPU power cables straight down instead of awkwardly sticking them out to the right. Previous versions of this case had that as a rubberized hole with flaps to stick it down through, which was arguably more elegant.

    Another great video. Your time and work that is put into these is very much appreciated. Also, thanks to Chris on this one for helping make the review possible. The Evolve X is a fantastic looking case with some really nice features. It does stand out in some ways at the $200 USD price point, but nothing really makes me say, "I've gotta have it!" It's pretty cool to see the CM HAF series still sitting on top of one of the temperature charts with the X. Although the noise level isn't as impressive. I had my system in a 932 not even a year ago. All the new case designs and especially the trend of tempered glass has changed things so much for air cooling and almost make at least a 120mm AIO necessary instead of an option.

      Facts bro I ordered this case to house my new build 3 years ago, and I still tell myself when this system is getting too weak for my liking, I will more than likely sell the parts that still have value and put my next system in here as well. I do like that newer one that has a full mesh front for better airflow, but i don't really push the boundaries of my system to begin with and hardly play games that are truly graphic demanding. For me its all about performance and hitting a certain threshold and not going below that since I primarily play multiplayer games.

    I remember deciding on my case after looking at reviews. They all were positive. My case is (design wise) pretty good, except that the gap behind the tray doesn't allow thickly sleeved cables (as they often come with modular power supplies) to be hidden there, meaning I have a mess just sitting around in the middle of my case. Apart from that I really like the design. However, the quality is just not up there, the side panels are bent ever so slightly that it becomes a bit difficult to screw them in, the bit sign the front I/O is made out of plastic and doesn't support the weight of the PC (while it is in a convenient position to be used as a handle when lifting), the LED strips behind the front panel are so bright that when the panel comes off the room is illuminated (I am not being hyperbolic. Before getting an illuminated keyboard I used that for indirect illumination to see the keys late at night) but when the panel is on then they're barely visible. I could go on, but the bottom line is that the design is good but the manufacturing subpar.
    I bought this case before knowing of GN. Guess I could've avoided that.

      Exactly. So much work in this review about how it works, forgetting how it feels. This is a consumer product, a human being will have it on his/her desk for years. How it looks is more important than a couple of degrees. An so is the metal finish, the available colors, the nice but not in your face leds, the ease to open up, and how easy it is to clean the dust filters. Just the fact the front panel is magnetic is more important than 2 degrees.

    • @azozfs5330
      @azozfs5330 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You’re damn right, although temps are very important, but here we are talking about few degrees that won’t impact the performance significantly.
      The build experience, the additional features, the overall look and style of the case and the build quality are far more important than few degrees.

    • @LightStrikerQc
      @LightStrikerQc 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What GN often forget to note is that it's 2-3 degrees under max load. Like, both CPU and GPU max load. Most games don't push that hard and only use 2-4 cores.
      A normal user will never see thermals that high in a normal daily use.
      So a "It's fine" is plenty enough for 99.9% of gamers.

Using mesh as a front panel I think would change it’s look too much for me and would have been a deal breaker. The P400 could have used mesh though, it doesn’t look good to start with so it would’ve definitely benefited from the mesh.

The HDD removable cages (sold separately) fit well with the fan upgrade. That case holds 10 regular size mechanical drives, 4 at the bottom and 6 on the side. White Phanteks fan at the back I'm keeping due to the extra long cable it has to reach the main fan hub on top. That thing is one of the heaviest cases I've seen.

    Absolutely love this review. I for one am still on the hype train despite flaws. This case is designed 100% for enthusiast. I already have two computers on my desk so it'll be nice to throw them both into one case and save some work space. The only things I want to see now is a test with liquid cooling and a test with better fans. This case is designed for liquid cooling with its built in fill/drain ports. I actually picked up this case off new egg and am waiting for it to get here. I plan on water cooling the main system and air cooling the mini. None the less awesome review. I have looked at many for this case and only gotten positives. Thank you for bringing flaws to the light. Until companies know our gripes with will keep getting the same issues with new products. +1 sub from me.

    For the most part I totally agree with the review. I have the case and for the most part its a good mid tower case. The build quality I would praise a little higher then the video but not shout on the mountain top the savior has returned. I was bummed the case didn't come w/ a pump bracket when my older Enthro pro did at around I believe $130 vs. $200 plus for the Evolv X. That made zero sense to me. The brackets holding the cable panels on the right side do take a lil extra to push in especially when the areas are populated w/ cables. Two of my clips damn near broke off. They are hanging on a semi thread and wont hold onto the panel. Im currently awaiting word from Phanteks to see if i can get replacement ones. The addressable rgbs on the case..if u like rgbs are freaking great. Really nice and I appreciate the ease of removing the front panel. I agree the stock fans could be better but to me that almost always the case. Get it? ha!
    Overall the case is good. I personally like bigger cases but that's just me. The price though... Its a tough one to rationalize. U do get a good mid tower case with cool features and its so pretty but $200 US? Hmm. If it were $150 it would be damn steal imo.

    I'm not gonna lie, I've been wanting this case for two years now, and I literally just bought it. It'll be here Tuesday. For ventilation, I'm CNCing the front panel using what's called tessellations. It'll have an almost gradient look to it from top to bottom, and from what I've calculated, it should allow for a 25%~ increase in airflow. I'm also modifying the cable passthrough "sliders" to sit farther away from the panel so that they can all be slid "closed" even with cables passing through them. The way they made those doors is almost pointless, because you lose the impressive looks of them the moment you pass a cable through them.. hence the purpose of the passthroughs in the first place.

    If you wanted to do a dual system build with a gpu in both systems, then you can potentially run in to GPU height issues. My understanding is that the dual system combo comes with a long riser cable for the second itx system, and you would be able to mount it vertically. So you have one gpu in the standard configuration on the ATX motherboard and the second vertically mounted in the two slots near the case.
    This means that the first gpu, in standard configuration, has a maximum height up to the second vertical gpu slot (which is not documented in their technical specifications), not to mention the difficulties of planning a water cooling setup without this information. Information on the maximum height of the gpu, from the pcie slot to the second vertical gpu slot, would be greatly appreciated.
    There is also no documentation on the support for the radiator/fan size with the ITX system installed (which should be single 140mm rad/fan and not a 120mmx2 rad/fan ).

    I Used the Phanteks "Enthoo Mini XL DS" to build a dual system this past spring. 8700k and 1080 ti. I liked the concept but it was a frustrating system to build in and learned a lot while building it. My Previous case was a Cooler master Cosmos 2.. I've been toying with the idea of moving my dual build to this case so that i can get back to one of the pc's using a full ATX board.. I was totally going to make a video about building it.. But by the time i was done i was so relieved of my frustration i had very little interest in opening up the case again.

    The top airflow cover is basically Phanteks just doing what owners of the previous generation Evolv did unofficially. The problem was if exhaust fans were placed in the top locations, there wasn’t enough holes to let the air out, so the warm air would go back into the case via any unoccupied fan locations. Apparently Phanteks decided to offer an OEM solution for the problem...

    Love my evolve x, managed to squeeze an Alphacool 420mm and 280mm rad in. Only let down by ridiculous front fan/rad bracket. If buying this case buy some m3 10mm washers to use with front bracket or screws will just pop straight through. Top fan bracket is fine which makes the front ones flimsyness even more annoying. Other let down is psu mounting. Psu just sits on the metal floor of the case. Previous mastercase 5 had a couple of lovely thick rubber strips that the psu sat on. Other than those two gripes, build quality and watercooling support are excellent.

    Purchased the Evolv X recently sans the dual power supply for $200.00 USD, added the 3 drive sleds $21.00, replaced fans which top out @1200 rpm, with 5 units of black 1500rpm max NF-A14 Noctua chromax fans $125.00, picked up 5 units RGB Halo Lux fan hubs (completely frivolous I know) and have a PCI riser cable coming for $35.00. Battle plan is to power with the EVGA 1200 Supernova P2 ;$159.00 on an anniversary fire sale. Which brings one to $540.00, which is still good value than the $426.00 unit with dual power supply sans all the goodies. Also added the Cable Mod premium cable package which I almost stole for $75.00. Further, will kit this out with the Threadripper 2950x and mobo, dual Samsung 970 Pro M.2 1TB SSDs, dual hard drives 10TB each, hence the extra fans to dump heat. Haven't worked out the water cooling loop yet though...We'll see how it goes but with the 5 Noctuas should be able to lower the temps, to dump some excess heat and make it further up the top of the cooling curve. Nice review, Steve. Cheers

    Thanks for the review! There aren't many cases offering vertical GPU mounts that can accommodate 2x 2-slots GPU cards (one them vertical on a riser, the other on the mobo): in most cases the vertical GPU will block the 1st GPU that's on the board, especially when the power connectors are on the top, obliging to mount the vertical GPU closest to the side panel thus creating a heat problem for that GC (must make a move to water cooled GPUs I guess).

    • @GamersNexus
      @GamersNexus  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We actually didn't really criticize the front panel in this one, first of all, so best to actually write an applicable comment. Secondly, it does still matter -- relative to a good design, a bad design is still going to be worse for *any* cooling solution.

    • @Geryboy666
      @Geryboy666 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I watched a couple of your case reviews, most cases have a similar design nowadays, you always show the air cooler to make the difference more dramatic.
      While you have a point there, there's simply also another side to it. AIO impact will be alot more negligible. Why not mention that?
      You try too hard to find something to be "critical". You also show it with your answer to me.

    • @yourwebsitesucks8601
      @yourwebsitesucks8601 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They always show the Air Cooler because it's their standardized Test Bench. Reviewing one case with an AIO and an i7-6700k, and then testing another with an Air Cooler and an FX 8370 or something then saying the second case is shit because they suffered from higher temps would be retarded. Whereas testing every case with the exact same hardware just makes more sense. Something a certain recently interviewed company did not seem to comprehend. That and Air Coolers are still what most people use, simply because they're often cheaper, and a lot of consumers are still leery about the concept of watercooling.
      Yes the more enthusiast crowd will lean towards custom loops/AIO's and that'll bypass most issues you would run into with lower airflow cases, but testing with air cooling will do a better job of bringing those types of flaws to light, testing in a way that provides info only applicable to ~50% of viewers is still better than testing in a way that would completely omit that info. If someone buys a case, then builds a custom loop with like 3 rads and says temps never climb over 50°, that doesn't mean that some Average Joe buying the same case and slapping a Hyper 212 Evo on the CPU will get the same results.
      Not to mention if they changed their test bench now, any results moving forward would be completely incomparable to previous results, which defeats the purpose of having this much data as a reference for end users to begin with.

    • @Geryboy666
      @Geryboy666 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      still this data is biased against air coolers and might confuse people and lead them to buy a different case, even though they would use aio anyway. Could have mentioned it, but they didn't. Their answer was also a bit too defensive. It's something I don't like and pointed out, don't want to start a fight over it. Still disapointing answer from them. Test method is not convincing to me to make suggestions of a suitable case.....

    • @yourwebsitesucks8601
      @yourwebsitesucks8601 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Geryboy666 I'm not denying that their test methodogy is biased against air coolers, but like I said, tesing with air coolers at least provides additional info useable by people who air cool, whereas people who watercool don't have to worry about that info anywhere near as much.
      If they tested with watercooling, then people who air cool would be missing crucial information necessary to make an informed decision.
      As for not mentioning it, if people are already using an aio - or better yet - a custom loop, chances are they're already aware that they don't have to worry about airflow as much. Watercooling isn't exactly something people jump into without doing some level of research beforehand.

    I have the original Evolv ATX, it was decent once you modded the front panel. So basically, the X is a decent case but plan to upgrade the front fans to something with better static pressure capabilities (Corsair MLs or similar) to get the best performance out of it...nice to hear that Phanteks at least partially listened to the community feedback about thermal issues. Also expect to pay extra for basic parts like SSD sleds. Well, at least somebody was willing to point that out, unlike basically any other review on this case....too bad they didn't include them like they did with the original.

The Steve from my timeline has also reviewed the latter case. In my time period, Steve's opinion is the gospel. So when he says 2 items, that fill the same purpose are OK, it creates a dilemma for system builders throughout the time-space continuum.

    My main issue building with this case was you can't put a D5 pump in the bottom of the case if you intend to put a standard fitting 420mm rad 😣

    The Corsair Carbide Air 540 is GODLIKE! it's still the best case ever made.

    That small hole in the psu shroud is excellent for GPU power cables.

    amazing case overall!
    about to buy this one for my new rig!!
    Decent airflow with a beautiful design!
    High end setup coming soon with this beauty! I'm highly pumped up!
    I'm not buying this case with its PSU though, for now I don't need another rid inside the new rig that I'm buying!
