Balloon Oxidisation and How To Prevent It - Balloon Basics 12

    All latex balloons can oxidise in sunlight, leaving a velvety finish to the balloon. While some people like this look and others hate it, the fact is that the latex of the balloon has started to break down and will be more prone to popping! There are ways of preventing this however like applying balloon shine to the surface of your latex balloon.
    Head over to www.balloonmark... for all your balloons!

    Great tip. Here in the south of Spain we have abou 9 months of sunshine so balloons get oxidated really quickly . From now on I´ll use balloon shine. Thankyou

    It's nothing to do with biodegradation. Bio means microbes or fungus degraded it. You are correct that it is oxidation. It's partly a reaction with ozone, which the silicone will protect against. The silicone will not protect against UV damage, but the glossy nature of silicone will keep it looking shiny even as the UV continues to damage it.
    One concern would be when the balloon pops, the contracted rubber will potentially get oil stains on fabrics.
    Finally, if you want to try this at home, it's virtually chemically equivalent to armorall, which will work the same way.

    treated balloon looked blotchy on the bottom. It does not seem to coat even. I would want to know how long it lasts outside. 7 minutes is not a proper test the product will do good in those conditions.

      Hi there! Using the spray bottle is the most effective way to get an even application; if you buy the larger bottle, you can decant it into a spray bottle.

    So are you saying we should treat the balloons before taking them outside?

      Unfortunately Balloon Shine has been discontinued, however there are new products such as Kalisan Shine Spray, which can be applied at any point, even after oxidisation and will still make the balloon shiny!

    Hi Mark! Great video, I use balloon shine all the time to prevent oxidization. I have a dilemma, I spray the balloon and then a bit of the shine goes onto my floor and it makes that spot really slippery. I have tried washing it, but it doesn’t come off. Any tips on getting it off my floor?

      When we touched them with the Balloon Shine applied, it was fine, but like with anything like this it's worth checking regarding allergies.

    Sorry to “pop your balloon” pardon the pun, I’m trying to get rid of reflections from the studio strobe lights that I use for photography as they are very distracting and a pain to successfully remove in things such as photoshop. There you go you can’t please all of the people all of the time 😉👍

      Hi Michele! I'm afraid Balloon Shine is now discontinued. The alternative is Hi Shine, which is oily, and can be found here: balloonmarket.co.uk/index.php?main_page=advanced_search_result&autocomplate_id=&search_in_description=1&keyword=hi+shine

    Could you give an indication as to how long balloon shine lasts please. I've heard of the product but never used it. Thanks . Mick

    • @BalloonMarket
      @BalloonMarket  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Mick.
      It does depend on the conditions that the balloon is kept in; sun, heat and humidity causes the latex to degrade.
      Indoors, balloon shine would last for days but the balloon-shined balloon in the video started to oxidise after being kept outside for only a couple of hours. It was a very hot day and in direct sunlight however.
      To get the best results, it might be worth conducting your own tests with the product in the conditions you intend to display the balloons.

    • @BalloonMarket
      @BalloonMarket  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Although it is not something we have tried ourselves I have seen people suggest inflating a balloon inside the deco bubble first of all - such as a 16" and then deflating it and pulling it out and apparently this removes the chalk from inside the deco bubble!

    That ‘treated’ balloon is completely splotchy and looks, there’s no way you want to touch a ‘treated’ balloon, definitely don’t get it on the floor or you’ll fall, and it doesn’t work for balloons outside. Save your money, this stuff is no good.
