Hi Kim. It's so nice to see what you have been doing! You have captured some wonderful photos! I especially love the pond bubbles and dandelion structures! What a eye-opening gift we have been given as photographers to be able to turn our imaginations to macro photography while our larger field of view has been reduced by this pandemic. I too have been impressed by the great big world in my own backyard! I'm guessing a lot of us will be making room for a macro lens in our landscape photography bag as we move forward.

I am so glad that you don’t feel guilty to take your camera with you! I’ve read about so many photographers that they feel guilty to take their camera with them on their daily walk. I just don’t get it. As if you could get infected when you’re taking pictures alone in the countryside. And your results are amazing!

    • @kimgrantphotography
      @kimgrantphotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว

If I lived in a town or city I wouldn't do it but as I live in the countryside and rarely see another person on my walks, I see it as ok. Many people have been talking photos on their phones during lockdown so I guess a camera is no different. Plus macro has helped me get through this time so in many ways, it's a way of coping :)

Welcome to the world of macro photography - it is a wondrous world we pass by everyday. My favorite photo to this point is a tiny jumping spider I caught hiding in a rose last year. Patience and lots of images later, I had several "keepers" which still astound me with nature's beauty. Looking forward to seeing more of your adventures!

A great start in the world of macro Kim ..... it’s a great complimentary genre to landscapes as when the light is poor for landscapes, it can be ideal for macro.

Kim, if you want something that works in between Your macro and long Telephoto lens Try the Nikon 28-300 mm lens, it is extremely close Focusing approx 0.5 metres. This allows you to get Really good close ups while giving you a bit more distance from easily spooked insects such as Butterflies and Damsels/Dragonflies and gives incredible Detail, probably even better on your Z 6 ( I assume, Never used one yet ). I use a full frame Nikon D750 and it works great on that. The results can be like using my Sigma 105 Macro lens with a little less Bokah. I found Macro Photography about 5 years ago and have never looked back. My year is now split in two halfs, late spring/Summer is usually spent photographing Butterflies, Damsels/Dragonflies, wild and domestic Flowers ( macro ) an my Bird Photography. The exception being my Annual Late spring month usually spent in the outer Hebrides where i combine this type of Photography with My First love of Landscapes. The other half of the Year, Autumn winter and Early spring is back to my Landscapes with a bit of Macro when we get morning frosts and heavy dew on Spiders webs. I find this keeps my interest going right through the year and never get Board not even at nearly 70 yrs old.

You've discovered a new world, Kim. Note that this new world is bigger than Landscape's. There's nothing to stop you from taking Landscape photography and taking the 100 mm MACRO lens with you. Do that or one day you look at something and you start calling yourself names because you don't have the lens with you.

WOW! I need to get out there and shoot macro! I don't have a dedicated macro lens but I have ordered some extension tubes from Amazon (even with Prime it says they will take 6-8 weeks to deliver!) as I am getting inspiration from everywhere and everyone who has a you tube channel! Like you Kim I too live in a rural area and am grateful that within a few minutes walk I can be either down by the river, in the forest or in a field. It is true there is beauty in nature and we don't give it the credit it is due. Thank you for more inspiring photos.

Just after lockdown started I bought a used macro lens to have a play with, and it’s turned out to be a revelation and an absolute sanity-saver, both for photographing garden flowers and bugs (got some cracking shots of damselflies emerging from our pond) and also for doing some creative and more abstract indoor stuff too. Absolutely loving it 😊

So what you need is a 15mm super wide macro lens then you can have the insect in it's surroundings.
As for lockdown "how have you coped", I can't say I noticed it as I have numerous macro lenses from half life size right up to a 10x objectiv and bellows, and my trail cam has kept an eye on the hedgehogs and the cats that visit my suburban garden.
I've been interested in Macro since the summer of 76 when I lived on a farm and bugs where ten a penny. I wonder what that flies tongue looks like, was my first Macro challenge. Now I really have to tempt them as years of insecticide and the loss of carcases and habitat and the amount of fast things we've invented take their toll, including Wind Turbines which I'd ban tomorrow first thing.
I have a lily that in spring smells like faeces and a whole gang of insects arrive as it's smell travels on the morning breeze. I grow Fennel as well purely for the noise of insects as it is one busy plant on a sunny day and even the whole wasp family visit. Wasps can be attracted by fish, so I keep fish scraps in the freezer ready for the hungry wasps in the spring so I can shoot some macro video of them cutting it up and carrying it off. I saw my first Jumping spider in the garden this year but I had a 4x objectiv on with a 17mm working distance, which was too close for it before it legged it, but I saw those big eyes even though they were out of focus with maybe 2mm to go.
As I've got older and more crippled, long focus macro seems impossible as I can't stay still unless I'm on my belly. Just as lockdown cut in I ordered a new lens to fit between my 5x objectiv and my 1x macro. I picked the 2x Iaowa as it doesn't extend as you focus, which is ideal for macro, as one of my old lenses ends up very long on close focus. i also ordered a tripod to upgrade my 1976 one. This one has a boom so the legs don't have to knock the stems and disturb the insect.
I set it up for the first time expecting to shoot some video of a caterpillar of the Mullein moth eating. It seemed to be asleep so I left it running and nipped indoors for a cup of tea. Later as I viewed all the videos, not much happened for ages then its face contorted and then I realised I'd been filming the wrong end as it promptly went to the loo, then wandered off. I definitely felt connected with nature at that moment.

Kim, I'm so pleased you've got into the world of Macro photography! Photographically speaking, it's my first love! I love every aspect of photography, including landscape, but macro is where my heart is. Good isn't it? By the way, you'll have to forgive me, but in the beginning bit of the video I'd got one ear listening to what you were saying, and the other ear listening to the sound of that beautiful Skylark in the background! Oh, and I don't know if you noticed when you photographed the dying fly on the surface of the water, but what is even more amazing is that it had just laid its eggs!

A tip for everyone: Shoot a burst. One is likely to be better focussed than the others. Maybe you can stack focus.
    A second. Use a flash.
    A channel, not mine:
Look Closer. Talks about finding and photographing much smaller subjects than these. The TH-camr videos them.
    A Photographer:
Levon Biss. A British photographer, in London I think. He will blow your mind.
A final tip. You can use a macro lens for landscape photography. The buildings in the distance might take six to a dozen shots, you then stitch them together. You get a high res result.
