As a 300 SRT8 owner I've been waiting for your report for a long time and have to admit that you did a great and honest job except for the mechanical part because since 2012 all 300 SRTs have run the 6.4 and only the SRTs to 2014 had the NAG 5 speed transmission. All 2015s and onwards had the 8 speed transmission. Your comments about buying one are spot on and it was good to see no shit canning.
I've had my 2012 for ten years and it still puts a smile on my face when I get in it. In the time I've owned it I had a couple of issues that were fixed under warranty, one being a faulty rear shocker and the other a faulty passenger's side headlight that wouldn't hold its setting. The carbon fibre is a well known issue and I have changed the centre console bezel once and recently noticed a corner lifting, which I gorilla glued back down. As you mentioned parts are expensive but thanks to the internet parts can be sourced from the US easily.
Mechanically, the car has been faultless and the biggest concern I had when I bought it was as you mentioned the electricals but even today (touch wood) everything works. The occassional gremlin comes up with the phone connectivity but the next time I start the car it works.
Yes there are better cars then the 300 SRT8 but outside its insatiable appetite for Premium 98, especially in city driving it is one of the best cars I've owned. It has been reliable, cruises comfortably and when you push the pedal you know it won't let you down.

In the 90s Mercedes Benz was the byword for over-engineered reliability. In 1998 MB merged with Chrysler. 26years later and MB has still not recovered… enough said.

"A merger of equals" it was called, and I believe at the time it was the highest value merger ever (until Time-Warner...someone correct me if I'm wrong).
Mercedes quality has dropped considerably even since the Chrysler days.
There are outliers BUT german reliability is a myth. People who bought expensive cars had the money to also service them, hence they didn't break down.
Having worked at a dealership that represented this model, would highly recomend wishing one apon your worst enemy.

I was fortunate enough to own a 2017 300 SRT Hyperblack for a while and it was by far the best car I’ve ever owned. I miss it every single day.

Your mechanical issues list is for the wrong engine. Noting a 6.1 not the 6.4. 6.4 has MDS and VVT. Avoid the ones rolling on 20s? They come with 20s stock 😅😅
I have owned 3 300 Srt all from new and drove them like they were stolen. A 2013 300 SRT8 owned till 78k km problems i had were with the fake carbon fibre trim peeling from the heat, sunroof creeking, blew out one rear shock absorber and chrysler service department always damaging interior trim. 2017 300 srt hyperblack new till 28k km zero issues, 2019 300 srt hyperblack till 46k km no issues.
All would chew through tyres set of rear tyres every 6 months. Best engines and transmissions I've had in a car.
Good review, Ive got a 2017 SRT with 66000kms and so far no issues apart from a couple carbon trims peeling. Such a fun and comfortable car to drive. Love its looks but the engine noise is the best part. Always puts a smile on my face planting my right food down.
They aren’t a 6.1 litre like Jim mentioned, they’re the 6.4 litre. The 6.1 was in the early 300c SRT-8’s.
And they do have mds
And they do have problems those 6.4s, unlike the 5.7 and the 6.2 hellcat, the 6.4 are the least reliable.

The second generation also doesn't have a NAG1 transmission. The whole mechanical section was about the 1st gen, not the second gen
Been looking forward to the 300 srt re driven. 2016 srt owner here with 167000kms and still going strong. absolutely love this beast of a car, ticks all my boxes for a modern muscle car.
All my carbon fibre trims are good except the drivers door, it’s peeled half way off 😅.

sounds like bullshit to me i bought 2006 srt8 300 new and had zero problems with it best car ive ever had the 6:1with a few mods performs as good or better than the 6.4 ticks all boxes you twat.
The 6.1 Hemis are good but the 6.4's are another story. That's where you get the lifter failures. Not just the cop cars either. If you find one with the camshaft MDS system removed it's a good choice.
I remember when these first came out in Australia the motoring journalists absolutely bagged out the build quality.

I own a 2012 srt8 enjoyed this video, the carbon fiber interior peeling issue can be fixed by hydro dipping, I thought the u connect was actually great I've never had any connectivity issues but that could be because it's not the core model, I did note the mechanic in this video referred to the engine as 6.1 hemi😅 its a 6.4 so that instantly took his credibility away, with the lifter failure best thing to do is do a mds delete and replace lifters with hellcat lifters however enjoyed the video my srt8 has been the most reliable, luxurious and powerful car I've owned (used to be a Holden ls1 owner) I highly recommend anyone to buy one .
Had a hyberblack one for 5 years best car ever. Not one single issue in 110,000 before I sold her. Completely stock. Power on tap was brilliant.
But ffs blokes its a 6.4 litre not the 6.1. 6.1 was previous boxy gen.
Can report that the new owner is at 150km now and again no issues except brakes got done.
I bought wipers for my VW Jetta on the basis of your confidence in Wipertech. They were easily ordered, quickly delivered, and as simple as Lego to fit.

Mate I appreciate the hard work you guys do in regards to testing cars, but you can’t have a mechanical section where the bloke is talking about a completely different engine than the 6.4 featured in the video..
And then he says don’t buy one rolling around on 20s, but the featured car comes from factory Rolling on 20s… and as a ex car dealer I’ve had 3 of them and have never had any of the issues you mentioned and all ex cop cars as well. Serviced every 10,000 km religiously as per NSW government.
Yes, they’ll have a few more scuffs bumps and bruises, but were 15 K cheaper than buying a retail one with similar Kms

Having had my 2007 Chrysler 300c for nearly 12 years now, I can say it has been one of the most reliable cars I've had. The newer models I can't give the same compliments from what I've heard and seen.

Sorry Jim, but $600 (retail) for NGK spark plugs would be Iridium plugs, which will last a lot longer than every 45,000ks, perhaps you could have explained that? A small point I know, but not nothing.

I have a 2015 3.6L V6 AND a lexus (2007 GS300). And I love both ... for their own ways and quirks!
I wish they'd stop that! As Lexus IS 350 owner, I want to get a V8 Lexus model one day but now, they are like rocking horse shit becuase no one wants the sell them, people are waking up to how good they are. The other day I was on Carsales looking at what's out there for RC-F's in Australia..and there were 5, FIVE for sale! WTF. There used to be, reliably, 20 or so for sale, same with GS F, IS F and others. I do see '08 IS-F imports are making their way here as well as Lexus LS 460 4x4 models. It's also interesting to read car reviews of cars like the Lexus IS from 2011 or 2012 and the motoring journos bagged it as being 'inferior' to BMW and Mercedes...NOW, 10, 12, 13 years later, they full over themselve with nostaligic praise.

I have a 2015 3.6ltr V6 (Post Facelift). It's not unreliable - it's been 1.5 years now and it's a bloody headturner. But keep the regular maintenance going and don't cheap out. I haven't had issue with the Uconnect connections either.
I haven't experienced that.

My son and I searched for 3 months until we found a low mileage 2006 Chrysler 300 C. The interior is like new,it had a clean Carfax and had been maintained by San Diego Chrysler/Dodge dealerships throughout it's life. The vehicle has been reliable and flawless for 2 years now with only a Alternator replacement and battery. We decided on a 300 C because the insurance is cheaper even though they're the same as a Hemi Charger.
Just refreshed the video after watching and have to say great one as always! There were 3 bots with questionable profile pics in the comments section a few minutes ago. And now they seemed to have disappeared into thin air, lmao.😂
The transmission IS a Mercedes-Benz 5G- Tronic that was used by many other manufacturers.
That's so wild on the U connect. Here in the States, I had a 2015 300C with it and I absolutely loved it. Never had any issues foot the 3 years I had the cat and it was one of the things I hated to give up.
I picked up the SRT-8 when it landed over here, and being both my first brand new car and first V8, I obviously fell in love with it. There were some gremlins however, mostly annoying little things like the boot release button being faulty and one time the driver's door decided it didn't want to unlock... aside from that it was a fun car. The only thing I realised a bit down the track was it wasn't particularly great on longer drives. When I traded it for an earlier model Jaguar XF, I noticed straight away how much more comfortable the Jag was. I would get back from long trips in the Chrysler feeling exhausted, but in the Jag I felt refreshed.
you must of bought the 2nd gen srt8 because the first gen seats are rediculesly comfortabal compaired to 2nd gen and well know for it

Premium leather wrapped dash and doors was an option, removing all hard plastics. Many more differences between the core and SRT models than listed.

I have the only full spec 2016 in Australia at the time when they did the latest facelift.
video covered the car pretty well, the carbon door trim under sunlight will bent and come off.
I get my car service in the best dodge experts in Melbourne - Dontex Motorsports, when I was there I see many SRTs using 6.4L Hemi suffered from lifter failure.
(which can be avoided if you upgrade it for few grand)
But for me, I have been abusing my SRT since 2016 until today, never had any issues at all.
When it was brand new, I drove from Melbourne to Mount Hotham in deep winter (not recommended, you could die there) push snow using this car, and then keep going until I get to gold coast. (well within 2 days, I wasn't driving slow.)
The car came along with me to Tasmania via spirit of Tasmania.
My final goal is to drive this car from Adeleide to Perth.
I trust this car, it's been reliable on off track, on the snow, in the city...
If you compare SRT against most of the performance cars in Australia, I believe in terms of mechanical reliability SRT is top tier.
One of the most fun feature that is standard in any SRT that is not covered in the video (because the show car is a "core" model) is remote start.
press the button twice in a parking lot, hear it roar from afar is the best feeling, it's a bit show off in public ngl, but it's my favorite feature.In a fully spec model you have hot and cold cup holder, hot and cold car seats, heated steering wheel, Dual Pane Panoramic Sunroof, some very powerful harman kardon speakers.
Lane detection, automatic emergency brake (saved me many times), and many more other features.
Oh, I forgot to mention, you have the "SRT" button that you can find on a hellcat. you can change drive models on the go (and brake behavior, suspension and all that..), you also have the launch button...you know what it does.
Unfortunately during covid, we learned that there won't be new SRT coming to Australia soon, and as you heard in the video, Australia is the only country getting this latest model.
So the price of this car gone from very cheap to insane in a very short period of time during Covid, you even seen some new ones selling for 200K+ on carsales.com.au.
Which never happened in this car's lifespan.
In the video it mentioned "90k" upwards price tag, that wasn't real before Covid.
If you buy one around 50-60km nicely optioned 300SRT in 2018, it probably cost you around 35-55k max.
It was a very afford car as well, competing head to head against Ford Mustang.
But now I don't know...
I have comprehensive insurance with RACV, access fee is set to 1200AUD, my monthly insurance fee is 108.30AUD in 2024. 1299.60 a year.
Service normally cost me 400-600 dollars if all is well.
Depending on how you drive it, tyres could be your biggest expense (hehe).
As you can see, it was never a "premium" sort of luxury vehicle, it's quite affordable and easy to maintain.
If you think about getting this car, as a current owner, I highly recommend it.
Lastly, check out dontex motorsports in Melbourne, they can do hellcat or even hellphant engine swap for your SRT if you think a standard 6.4L V8 just not enough.
You can also go for a whipple supercharger to get easy power increase.
I believe the ones we got in the later years were made in Canada
Can confirm, Golf R cant catch one of these, they cant even beat the 300kg heavier Jeep SRTs.

Coolant leaks, oil leaks, suspension issues, other issues with suspension/wheel area.
Internal felt cheap.
Engine went hard, when it (the car as a whole) worked it worked well.
On a subjective level i LOVE this car, but I am a long time subscriber to Hoovies Garage and The Car Wizard Channel. To my surprise and dismay, these Hemi engines are very problematic, the Hemi engine 'tick' can often require a FULL rebuild and it is fairly common in the USA at least. Tyler Hoover bought a Challenger Hellcat a couple of months back, yes it was a rough vehicle or a "hooptie' as Americans call it, but it had the 'Tick' and the Car Wizard had to spend several thousand rebuilding the engine.
Beautiful looking car inside and out. Great sounding and fun to gun it away from traffic lights. But an absolute nightmare. I've owned one for 18months, been able to drive it for about 3 or 4. Rest of the time its been in the shop broken.

Back in 2004 I went to Hawaii and I saw this car for the first time. Now, I know it's not exactly the same car anymore but it looks like the same car. I can't believe they sold it for almost 2 decades.
I am starting to think Need for Speed Hot Pursuit actually used Australias Police Fleet as inspiration.

And all hemis get lifter issues. Rams and jeeps also, 5.7L and up they all get lifter issues.
Even the 3.6 V6 Pentastar can have lifter issues, unfortunately 😢

I had a 300C SRT8 6.1 a couple of years ago. Very quick, sounded great, and other than a couple of tyre pressure sensors and a relay, it was dead reliable. But it was absolutely hopeless in the wet. I now have a 2019 Golf R with a tune, and it would blow a 300 SRT into the weeds, all while doing 30mpg. Strip away the V8 and suddenly there isn't too much to recommend the 300.

@ makes you really question why they were used in the police force. Ugly, my fk8 infotainment as bad as it is performs better and it’s not even hoo haa murica muscle cool large and in charge. It’s just well…..large.

Ex- Highway patrol cars are to be avoided. They are driven hard from the start and go through long periods of idling. Usually NSW sell them after 2 years with moderate mileage. When they are new, they can take being driven mercilessly but the damage does show up till years later.
This is one of those cars that you either think looks incredibly ugly or incredibly cool. There is no inbetween.

It's like your driving it then your always cramming in scripted what goes wrong with it whilst your driving it instead of taking it round for a loop in the hills and giving it proper spirited test.
Most of us spend out time stuck in the city but we do get out occasionally and take our vehicle to 8 tenths every now and again and really for a car like this and the majority of the cars you have reviewed this is what I personally want to see from you. I skip all your videos now through to to the drive and mechanics if the drive decent. Mechanic is a legend btw as are you and your delivery is great.. You're the only general auto category and one of only a couple of reviewers who I subscribe to due to your comprehensive coverage of so many relevant cars in Australia and yeah it's all practical but still missing the fang though the twisties. Maybe it's too far of a drive for you but yeah some dedicated content pertaining to a fang though the hills would complete the experience.
When I had my 300, if I drove close enough to a cell tower there was a 5-10% chance that the audio would suddenly rip up to 100% without changing what volume the stereo thought it was currently at. Scared the absolute shit out of me a few times. Changing the volume didn't work - you had to change the input source to radio or BT and back again.
There was one particularly bad spot on the M4 before it was widened at Church St. Just as you started driving up the bridge there was a tower on the left/right side (I can't remember which side) of the bridge that put you right into the beam as the tower was only a tad higher than the bridge. I was always scared to drive past it.
EDIT: Regarding uconnect in general - I actually thought it was really good. For the time, (around 2013) it was one of the best infotainment operating systems. Outside of the sudden "murder audio volume" issue and GPS sometimes thinking it was in the ocean, I think even today it compares well to my Kia's infotainment even if lacking a few features in comparison.
My brother has a diesel 300 that needs the head gasket replaced. He told me "You can have the car if you do the head gasket". Not gonna lie it is tempting, but it's the Mercedes OM642 (3.0 diesel), which isn't something I particularly want to roll the dice on.
Have a OM642 since new …in a 300 , 2005 with 200k s been reasonably reliable ? Spent a considerable amount of amount of money & time keeping it running. Is it worth it ……yep ,very comfortable with a lot of remarks on its tug look.
'leather' armrests that peel. God that is an instant turn off. Imagine the constant feeling of failure and crap every time you sit in the car.

Driven a few of these, even driven a highway patrol one, they aren't fantastic build quality, especially the interior, but they sound good i guess (my comment was before i watched the video lol)
Hey guys, I was looking at this vehicle, but they have too many problems that are recurring. I wanted a cool car, powerful, and confortable for winter. Of course I wanted to spend around 30 to 40 thousands dollars. I found my car for 34,000$, less than 50,000KM. For the price I think I got a good deal. So I found a G80 Sport charcoal color, inside 2 tone black and white AWD, loaded heating seats, cooling seats, a 900 Watts 17 speakers, sounds great. Car even drives by itself…by the way, it is a 2020. I have a convertible for summer, nice AMG Merc. So I have had this car since oct 2024. I have driven for 5000KM, no problems, just pure confort on Normal, and on sport it’s like a bmw or Merc, sincerely, who wants to take a 100,000$ car and put it through winter, not me. My last car for winter was a Lincoln MKS, don’t laugh now, it was a great confortable car, for a ridiculous price tag. Kept it for 10 years, bought it used, and when I changed my AMG, they found the G80 Sport for me, talk about hitting 2 birds with one stone😂😂😂 take care guys, tell me what you think about my babies 👍😎💙🇺🇦🇨🇦
..21 cat Pack Challenger(manual..), and a 22 300 Touring L AWD.. so far so good(knock on wood)... but is what it is with pricing for parts since it's... well... a older mercedes underneath...

If you are going to buy one, an oil pump upgrade to a Melling pump, boosts the low rpm oil pressure (increased flow). Personally, I couldn't handle the hassles!!
The Crapler 300 is built on the same platform as the Mercedes E-Class....which are used as taxis in Europe.

I've always found American car interiors to be awfully outdated and bland, and I would never buy one. Those plastics look abhorrent, worse than many '90s cars. Having said that, the sound of the Chrysler V8 as a HWP car roars past you from a dead stop is incredible.
After having watched this video it's confirmed that the 300 SRT is too much of a gamble to risk buying.
I can't believe how bad the fuel efficiency is on one of these even if it is a 6.4L V8.

There's a diesel version but it's the Mercedes 3.0L diesel so as always, do your research.
You don't buy this car for fuel efficiency 😂, it's an American V8, it's going to be as inefficient as it can be 😂.
On the freeway they're great
Fun car, my experiences, no chance you'll get 13l/100 km, great track car and on smooth road surfaces. Excellent adjustability of seat and steering wheel for driving position, however seat bolsters are deep and uncomfortable for larger drivers. Very compromised road car if you live anywhere with rough roads or a large amount of speed humps.
What goes wrong? The 300.

Yep Jim commenting on a completely different engine the 6.1 that was found in the early models and Grand Cherokees etc... which is one of the best engines Chrysler ever did... and the solid NAG1 5 speed... the 6.4 is a terrible engine that you should turn the MDS off as the first thing ever (but DOES have the better 8 speed box!)... the amount of people I've seen with problems with the 6.4 engine, wouldn't touch it at all, I'll stick with the basic 6.1 in my Jeep. However yeah, you need to edit this video and get the correct engine details. In order of crapness, the 6.2 Hellcat engine (which basically just falls apart chronic engine), 6.4 then the 5.7/6.1's give or take, but I seem to hear alot more about the 5.7's but then again there were alot more of those sold... not that many 6.1's around anymore.

Mate, I'm the same height as you, never had issues getting in our out of these things.
Uconnect, the maps corrupt and cost all the $$$ to repair, because it controls much of the lighting and aircon etc functions, not easy to find a replacement head unit, I have yet to find one

I went out today on a 20km round trip on country roads and freeway. Passed 3 unmarked police cars. Doing the speed limit at all times. Listening to mozarts last work - requiem. very pleasant drive. Speeding absolutely not tolerated in SA. They are all over it and know exactly where to drive. I imagine NSW isnt much different.

I love the video but Jim isn't clear about whether he's talking about the five speed or the later eight speed transmissions (and he only talks about one transmission). Are the transmissions closely related or is this an oversight?
Also, the car in the video literally has a 6.4L badge on the side.
It's unusual for Jim to get things wrong but this needs to be clarified.
He was talking about the 5 speed. No mention of the later 8 speed, which was available from 2015. The 5 speed isn't a bad box but very lazy compared to the 8 speed.
