This is the same band who's music was branded "heavy metal sludge" by a Rolling Stone critic after a California show in '80 or '81. Haven't bought a copy of that rag since. Rush Rules!
In defense - RS wasn't necessarily mainstream back in '81. (Nah. They were already mainstream by then.) They still allowed their critics all the leeway they wanted when reviewing albums. You might not have agreed, but you knew the review was honest from one person's perspective. Not Creem/Lester Bangs levels of freedom, but still.
The critics were always writing hideous trash about rock with any sort of genuine artistic pretension. You can also find reviews for vintage Led Zeppelin and Yes that are hilariously beside the point of the actual music. "Yuck, this is way more than four chords! That song lasts too long!"
When i first bought the album "" Hold your fire '' i didnt like, so i gave it to my best friend Mike. Weeks later, we were hanging out and he put it on, and i was like '' What was i thinking?, this album is great!'' and he said '' Im not giving it back, fuck you ''..........LOL!
Yep, I’d have been inclined to do the same. I’d be like, “are you going to be an “Indian Giver” (I’m sure that’s not a PC term anymore, but it was popular when o was young). Anyway, it meant someone who gave something away and later demanded it back or even stole it back. I certainly wouldn’t want to give that awesome album back, Time Stand Still”, “Force Ten”, “Mission” and “Prime Mover” just to name a few. What were you thinking dude? We’re you drunk maybe? It depends on how good of friends we were. If we were really tight, I’d probably give it back, but not right away. You’d have to guilt me or something.
Throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s, Geddy’s voice was still pristine and typically sounded just like the studio track live. That’s actually rare, especially with a vocalist who sings in such a high register. As the 2000s went on he began struggling to hit some really high notes from early Rush. It really changed night to night. Even in more recent concerts I have heard recording where he sounds great. I have been very lucky with every concert I’ve ever been to and he sounded great. I have seen Rush on every tour since Permanent Waves and he was great in the years between 80s, 90s and early 2000. He started struggling in some recordings I’ve heard, but always sounded great whenever I saw them. Actually, I saw a video that followed Alex and all of his guitars and gear he uses in concert and he pointed out one Les Paul and said that was tuned down a half step and he only uses it on “Temples Of Syrinx” and that was on the R40 tour I believe. It was one of the later tours, so don’t believe all of the myths you might hear that they down tune every song or most songs to make it easier for Geddy to sing.
I've wasted my life :( Never heard this before 2018. I'm 51 next month and I just never realised! 2112, Farewell to kings, Moving Pictures. I have a *lot* of catching up to do!
wait till you get to Power Windows... my favorite album, once you really get aquatinted with Rush, you'll realize it's some of their most beautiful works
Hey...same here...1981...felt that wat back then...like I missed all the good early stuff...anyways...it's never too late to be on the RUSH train...It'll get you caught up and passing all the foot traffic in no time..!!
Same here, but I did know of Rush's 'radio' songs and videos but never got into their catalog. Since Neil's passing i started at their first album and went thorough each one in their entirety. Complete gold and now my biggest regret is not seeing them Live. I'm sure I missed magic in action.
After my wife passed in 2008,I played this song repeatedly, brought tears to my eyes every time. Just a great song that we both enjoyed. Great to see this video of them, brings back wonderful me.memories.We saw them twice, while we were married. Great concert every time!! R.I.P.Niel!!
Man....I always remember my first kiss when I hear this song! It was playing on the radio that friday night when I took her home....one of the best nights of my life! God I love Rush so much! So much nostalgia when I hear this song! Talk about wanting time to stand still! lol! :)
Mabase my thoughts so often He still seizes to amaze me after all these years Neil has a big head and heart And sure has hell knows how to express deep emotional feelings in a poetic way His lyrics are even better than his drumming imo
Omg, I love the way Geddy sings right here, almost more then the original recording. It's almost as if, the song has more meaning to him years later then it did when they first recorded it. Which I'm sure, as we can all agree, it does for us as we get older.
On the subject of time... This was 1994, 20 years from Rush launching as we had known them. As a fan, those first 20 years seemed like centuries, so much to take in and so much unknown, energized and enlightented around every turn. The following 20 years went by like a camera flash with virtually no time to even smile. Time stand still, indeed.
I saw the opening show of the tour in Pensacola, FL, January 22, 1994. My first Rush show. It was a life changing event for me. Hope to make the NOLA show from R40 tour. This is what life is worth living for; The enjoy of great music from one of the greatest bands on earth, Rush!
This song reminds me of my deceased mother. ='(. It is a beautiful song. I don't know exactly how it reminds me of her, maybe its the composition of the lyrics, I guess? Something.
Rush= FREAKING AMAZING, i dont know any band better than these guys. i love them all so much, Amazing music, Amazing lyrics. Freaking amazing Drums and Bass lines. and Freaking amazing guitar riffs, cords, etc.. Rush Forever!
Great to see them playing so happily in '94 knowing it's been 20 years since they started out and everything is going pretty good...LP's still flying off shelves...concerts near selling out....like..maybe thinking ...Hey?...Maybe we HAVE actually been doing something cool all these years with the whole "freedom of Music" thing.??..lol...anyways...Rest in Peace Neil...Thank you so ...so much....
This song resonated with me when it came out, I was only 22. Now I'm 58 and it really resonates now, now that I've grown older, I've had kids who grew up and my friends have grown older.
I am glad to have been able to see them multiple times, from the 70s to 2015 in Chicago. They are so damn talented. Thanks Rush, one of the best bands of all time.
I love this song so much, really great, I mean there is so much emotion in it and meaning. I know we can all take different meanings from things, but for me, it's about someone not wanting the past or the future, but the now - the appreciation of now, of the people you know and love and being with them. All we have is now.
@DrivenBlack Aimee Mann did the female vocal in the studio version. It's hard to tell in this live version, but it sounds like they are just using her recorded part here too.
Holy Crap!!! I came across this video and I was there!!! Both nights that they played there!!! Nice post!!! It was a great show and they played a different playlist both nights. thanks!!
@David Casse they’re referring to the studio video made for this song in 1987. It was super cheesy with Alex, Geddy and Neil, with his entire dum kit, we’re flying around while playing. Very typical green screen chroma removal and Aimee Mann trying to follow the musicians with a huge studio camera on wheels. The background is the Canadian country side, showing Alex, Geddy and Neil flying over lakes and prairies. It’s really, really cheesy when you look back at it. I actually thought it was super cheesy at the time, but Rush never had great MTV videos. “Subdivisions” is one of their better videos, not as cheesy as it follows a high school nerd around town and in video arcades. At one point, he’s even watching Rush on the TV when his father throws his school books on his lap. It’s not great, but not cringeworthy either. “Distant Early Warning” isn’t too cringy either.
Been a Rush fan since the mid-70s. (Grew up around the lake from them.) It's so nice to hear him singing the high notes, instead of yowling them...cuz I can't listen to those versions.
Great lyrics and this live version is 100x better than the video they put out for the song. This song came out during the period where I had quit listening to Rush, as I was more old-school Rush. The Eighties were definitely different. Neil really is a great poet !
Saw them 2 nights ago at Jones Beach. They started right at 8 o'clock and I got into the venue only halfway through this song. Overall, the show was amazing. The band really did sounds as good on this tour as they did in 1994 (a bit louder, I think), and the set list was amazing - this song, Presto, Marathon, Leave that Thing Alone and of course the big hits. Even the unreleased song they played was better than the stuff on Vapor Trails and Snakes and Arrows.
Neil is one of the BEST drummers of all time regardless of the genre of music. Great musicians who should be considered one of the best power trios ever and deserve to be in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame
Once you completely mature around mid 30's, you don't really change appearance-wise. From then onward you don't gain any new facial features other than wrinkles, saggy skin, etc. Some people however end up getting shorter. In Geddy's case he'll age well, not really changing much appearance-wise even when he's in his late 70's.
Does it really get any better than this song? Trick question , hell no it doesn't! The lyrics alone make this one the best songs Rush ever did.... Period!
Loved the Counterparts tour. The first time they used flames, pyro, etc. I remember the nuts and bolts shooting flames. Also love seeing the wall of Trace Elliots behind Geddy.
Saw them Last night in CT. This was the second song. I swear Geddy's voice and the overall band sounded better last night than they did back then! Blew my mind.. again!
This is the same band who's music was branded "heavy metal sludge" by a Rolling Stone critic after a California show in '80 or '81. Haven't bought a copy of that rag since. Rush Rules!
Rolling Stone is trash like most mainstream media.
I've only ever owned 1 copy of a Rolling Stone,it was the issue with Rush on the cover in 2015 & I stole it from the store lol
The critics were always writing hideous trash about rock with any sort of genuine artistic pretension. You can also find reviews for vintage Led Zeppelin and Yes that are hilariously beside the point of the actual music. "Yuck, this is way more than four chords! That song lasts too long!"
RS was about as reliable as Car&Driver when it comes to critical reviews. I line my bird's cage with it.
The US Army did this as a tribute, my face was wet afterwards.
I saw that. I was moved. Rush will always be loved.
Yes true need tissues for sure. RIP Neil
My eyes were sweating. It was a beautiful tribute.
You have just made me laugh so hard with that last remark... Best regards...
Yep, I’d have been inclined to do the same. I’d be like, “are you going to be an “Indian Giver” (I’m sure that’s not a PC term anymore, but it was popular when o was young). Anyway, it meant someone who gave something away and later demanded it back or even stole it back.

Geddy's vocals are amazing here.
As always. X

Hey, I had same reaction in 1981. I Missed alot back then too.
Never too late for something of this quality

RIP Neil, the words to this song are even more meaningful now... What a great band...
"Experience slips away."
Love that part... Love the song, Rush is the best there is, and no one can deny that.
“Summer’s going fast, night getting colder, children growing up, old friends getting older”. Very passionate lyric. I always loved that line.
One hell of a lyricist
A very cunning linguist.
Mabase my thoughts so often
He still seizes to amaze me
after all these years
Neil has a big head and heart
And sure has hell knows how to express deep emotional feelings in a poetic way
His lyrics are even better than his drumming imo
The best
@@Ronbo710 Excellent play on words!!!!!!!
Anything can happen.
RIP Neil Peart

Hold your fire is one of the best among Rush's albums, in my opinion. The profound lyrics with modern and powerful sound is so touching...
Mesmerizing 😮. Everytime I hear it. Like a part of you will not let it go . Never gets old.
Masterfull !!!!❤
one of the best if not the best 3 piece bands ever!!!!!
jean cheatwood there’s no arguing, they’re the best Canadian artists in history
One of the best if not the best. Period.
Understated fact.
Well said absolute fact. X
Agreed

I don't understand why this song never mad it on ASOH or Replay DVD. I bow before RollTheFemers! Thanks for posting.
Seeing this live was a life long spiritual tool
I was there and can feel it like that day
I saw the opening show of the tour in Pensacola, FL, January 22, 1994.
Something.
Sorry for your loss. Maybe it's because you wish that time could stand still so that your mother could have lived longer.
My favorite Rush song.
A few years after this Neil would lose his only child, then his wife..RIP Professor..you three were the soundtrack to my youth, thank you
Rush= FREAKING AMAZING, i dont know any band better than these guys. i love them all so much, Amazing music, Amazing lyrics. Freaking amazing Drums and Bass lines. and Freaking amazing guitar riffs, cords, etc.. Rush Forever!

i cried like a baby when they played this song in Argentina
Thanks to you tube... Time can stand still!
This is the best recording of Geddy's bass on the planet! You can hear every note. That is awesome.
counterparts was such an awesome album, yes one of the masterpieces
+SwiggitybandBooty signals is their best
this song is off Hold Your Fire not Counterparts. great tour though.
Signals is overrated as hell and isn’t that good, out of all honesty. Hemispheres and A Farewell To Kings are kilometres better
Coldfacekiller CFK it’s all subjective, the beauty of music.
@@DrKFC69 100% agreed, classic 70s era rush kicks ass!
This is me and my gf's song. It's also my favorite song by them. I LOVE RUSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Truly the perfect rock/prog band. Geddy could climb those high pitched notes as well as anyone.
Favorite song of many from Rush, the best band ever. You don't hang around for 35 plus years if your not bad ass. Hope to see them one more time live.
This song resonated with me when it came out, I was only 22. Now I'm 58 and it really resonates now, now that I've grown older, I've had kids who grew up and my friends have grown older.
I was 36 days old when this came out....
These guys are awesome as always. Neil looks like The Edge in this video!
I am glad to have been able to see them multiple times, from the 70s to 2015 in Chicago. They are so damn talented. Thanks Rush, one of the best bands of all time.
Freeze This moment.....along with the last 40 years fo sho......Cheers to THE Best Damn Fan's of THE Best Damn Band
Rush is a rush.
The Professor on the Drums is amazing
Neil Peart for the uninitiated.
I loved Rush, three great musicians......soooooo tight!
Who are these people who give Rush thumbs down? You definitely don’t like rock and roll
I love this song so much, really great, I mean there is so much emotion in it and meaning. I know we can all take different meanings from things, but for me, it's about someone not wanting the past or the future, but the now - the appreciation of now, of the people you know and love and being with them.

They got Neil running at about 2/3rds throttle on this one......simply Jaw-dropping amazing....
What a great video! Here in Canada they are sadly under appreciated. Love this song!
Thanks for sharing!
Saw the in Birmingham, last month, great gig as always, no wonder they have been voted the best live band ever!!
I saw them at NEC Birmingham in about 1982 and twice at Bingley Hall Stafford. OMG !! Fantastic thanks for the music and the memories ❤️ guys. X
One of my favorite songs from the 3 kings! Great sound! Also, this was my favorite of Neil’s kits; the sound, the layout...just great.
I was there. Amazing !!!
Love this song top 5 rush song in my eyes
Greatest band on earth.. ever
One of my top favorites,of all time
It's a song that one doesn't easily forget.
As I watch this in 2021 after Neil Perts passing I think “freeze this moment a little bit longer” My high school youth in the 80’s !!
@DrivenBlack
Aimee Mann did the female vocal in the studio version. It's hard to tell in this live version, but it sounds like they are just using her recorded part here too.
as you are getting older time goes faster
take the time! freeze it! make it larger! live every minute like is the last! :)
enjoy life!!!
Holy Crap!!! I came across this video and I was there!!! Both nights that they played there!!! Nice post!!! It was a great show and they played a different playlist both nights. thanks!!
This is the best 3 piece band I have ever listed to!!
I AM SO PUMPED TO SEE THEM!!!!!!!
@DrivenBlack That is Aimee Man, from the 80s band Til Tuesday. Check out her song "It's not going to stop til you wise up." Great stuff.
The need to bring this song back, as well as "The Pass," for future tours.
Words cannot describe how much this song and band means to me, Neil rest in peace.
That's one crazy stick toss at 1:56 , Mr. Peart
Caught that.Wow. He was fantastic.
R.I.P. Genio , Maestro
Absolutely amazing. I fine classical version of this awesome Rush song! Thanks for doing such and GREAT tribute to Neil !
the lyrics are so beautiful :') this one has to be my fav rush song ever, it brings fucking tears to my eyes
Why aren't they flying?
People only flew in 80s MTV
always!!!!
where's the majestic ontario countryside?

Greatest band ever! I miss these guys.
Part was such a beast on the drums. I saw them in 1981 on the Moving Pictures Tour in Binghamton, NY. CLASSIC
Thanks for posting! Another great song from a great band! Long Live Rush!
Geddys voice was at its finest in the 90s
The best of their "newer" songs in my opinion. Great lyrics.
I was just 1 year old when i heard that for the first time, i m listening now remembering my first year old..
Been a Rush fan since the mid-70s. (Grew up around the lake from them.) It's so nice to hear him singing the high notes, instead of yowling them...cuz I can't listen to those versions.
There is a very strong possibility that they will play this song on tour this year, one can only hope! : )
I bought this on VHS bootleg forever ago. I'm in Michigan, so I was never sure how widespread the tape got. It's a great concert.
Nice video. Thank you for sharing. RUSH is an awesome band.
Cupertino, Ca
It's amazing how little they have changed these past 20 years... maybe the Time really stood still after hearing this song...
Great lyrics and this live version is 100x better than the video they put out for the song. This song came out during the period where I had quit listening to Rush, as I was more old-school Rush. The Eighties were definitely different. Neil really is a great poet !

Agreed, this live version is a real "video" for this song.
I’d put these guys up against anyone, anything, anytime, anywhere! Freakin love these guys!
I dont care what anyone says, I'll punch them in the face if they dont agree Rush is the greatest band ever...and Im a Rolling Stones fan. Greatest.
😂😊😅hey hey hey 👋 um with you on this Bud 😂😅😊!!!
Summer's going fast
The nights growing colder
Children growing up
Old friends growing older
Neil is one of the BEST drummers of all time regardless of the genre of music. Great musicians who should be considered one of the best power trios ever and deserve to be in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame
Still holds true maybe more so. If only Time could Stand Still
If only they'd had Go Pro type cameras back then to mount all around Neil so we could see the master at work.
Geddy hasn't changed a bit in the last 20 yeras! Appearance-wise, I mean.
I wish time could stand still :) I was a kid in the 90's now I'm 27 !!!
i just saw them in detroit last june...on the night of exams lol. totally worth it
Does it really get any better than this song? Trick question , hell no it doesn't! The lyrics alone make this one the best songs Rush ever did.... Period!
sincere..proper & quality music with depth from....a special band!...
Saw them at the same place last night.
Fantastic show.
Blew my mind.. again!
I like rush this song is very nice
Great sound on this. Geddy's voice is way strong. Counterparts was a great tour, although pood Geddy was sick as a dog when I saw him in DC that tour.
Geddy's voices sounds great in the Show of Hands version of this.
This song has meaning yet to be understood, but by the Gods them selves.
Top Notch !!
did I mention I understand it..............
Alex Lifeson on guitar ; Awsome !!!!!!
@yampear US TOO! Tickets on the Fridge!! CANNOT WAIT!
Loved this tour!
tempo bom que não volta mais..
@ACDCfan4ever yep. it is being played. Seeing them tomorrow!!
Best album ever Hold Your Fire.
