Probably my favorite Rush song. There may be better Rush songs, Rush songs more iconic and Rush songs that get more radio play, but this one just hits me the most, like a shadow across my heart.
What strikes me most about this song is Alex's guitar work. In spite of the somber message of the song, Alex's plays a simple acoustic chord progression, but is able to make it so incredibly complex that it stands out as much as the message. Alex- one of the most brilliant, yet most underrated, guitarists of our generation. I hope these 'counterparts' continue to work forever!
For Lori....... "As the years went by, we drifted apart When I heard that you were gone I felt a shadow cross my heart...." Rest now, and may God comfort your family and friends. You are still a hero to many.
" ...When I heard that you were gone I felt a shadow cross my heart" seems like a particularity poignant lyric after hearing the news yesterday. RIP Neil...😥
It's amazing! They are just three but a perfect three that plays like a big ONE. There's no one without the other and each one of them add something that makes the song grow and grow stronger inside us. There it goes 40 years together and they never told about go separate ways. Rush is beyond the business. It's their friendship and the pleasure they have playing that holds them together, fortunately for us.
This concert was 1 yr and 1 day before my friend was born. For me was 1 yr and 8 days before I was born. 17 years ago this concert came. My dad came to their concert for the first time in that same year in Chicago on March 29 or 30 (1 whole year before I was born) 1994. What a good year that time.
i love rush. their lyrics are one of the reasons i like them so much they don't write songs about getting wasted or doing drugs, sex, and they don't use curse words. just very nice songs.
Rush= FREAKING AMAZING, i dont know any band better than these guys. i love them all so much, Amazing music, Amazing lyrics. Freaking amazing Drums and Bass lines. and Freaking amazing guitar riffs, cords, etc.. Rush Forever!
All RUSH rocks for me! All the songs come from a special place in their hearts...and as we grow old we experience all kinds of emotions,,,there for they write different styles of songs! I dedicate this song to my passing grandma..may her soul rest in peace! She is my hero!
I too was at this show. Nice to see it again. Ive seen them several times in or near Detroit but I believe this was the show that had professional cameras capturing the whole thing.
Amen, good to hear from another person who loves them for the same reason, Neil's lyrics are always well thought out and don't need curse words to make their impact felt!
Even though this was 6 months ago i'm still going to comment. There are so many Rush songs that I could say the same exact thing about; they're all so great. The list keeps getting bigger and bigger. There are songs from every album that I would love to hear live. Secret Touch, Everyday Glory, Fountain of Lamneth, The pass, War Paint, and much more. It's starting to kill me.
dude i feel you.....thats how i discovered rush.....my dad dies when i was 6....i found his records....and there was rush 2112....it helped me through my loss
Rush music seems like when you go back and listen it's even better then when in the moment it came out probably because you haven't heard it repitiously like some of their songs they are a group to listen to your whole life
@RushRules4 It was one year before i get born. I believe someday I'll be in a Rush concert and maybe even meet them! I love their songs and their messages!
Rush e uma banda de rock muito boa principalmente essa música herói linda de mais a primeira vez que eu vi achei muito boa rock da melhor banda de rock cara 👏👏👏 parabéns pela música melhor pra mim 👏👏👏👏👏
I always had the feeling with these guys, no matter how big they got, they never forgot about the little guy. They remained a band for the individual and the common people, much more than many so-called 'working class' groups, some of whom were just putting on an act.
@hkygy he is defintiely amazing, he sings, plays a great bass, keyboards, foot pedals, and he does make it look SO easy !!! i sing and play blues harmonica but could never do what Geddy does, but i wish i could!!!!
I only have one minor complaint of rushs current CA tour.....they didn't put this song in the set! could you have imagined what this song woulda been like live with the string ensemble they're touring with right now? oh well. it still was the best show ever. anyone wants to see some footage of the current tour I got vids up from the pittsburgh gig on 9/11
i strongly believe that for their farewell tour in hopefully not for another 15 years or so, they should for every date play their albums in full. one day have the first rush album in full, then fly by night in full the next night, all the way up to whatever album they decide to be their last album and then just have a set of 10 "classics" thatd be tough though because the sets would have to be changed accordingly to accomidate the albums in full theyre performing each night.
That would be cool but what if they play one album in Chicago(where i live), then the one I want to go see all the way across the country. Cool idea though. I wouldn't want them to only resort to their past songs though; they need to still be creating new albums.
ha youre all good. i check youtube pretty regularly actually but at anyrate 2 songs i could live without them playing live honestly would be tom sawyer and spirit of radio. great songs dont get me wrong but their catalog goes so much deeper than that. we heard moving pictures front to back but what about power windows? what about hemispheres front to back? what about roll the bones front to back? presto and counterparts too!
Probably my favorite Rush song. There may be better Rush songs, Rush songs more iconic and Rush songs that get more radio play, but this one just hits me the most, like a shadow across my heart.
me too
I was having the same thought and I read this!

Geddys voice and the bands playing was on point at this stage of their career. Absolutely flawless.

💯 😪
The same thing was true for Gord Downie and Gordon Lightfoot.
this is the day my dad died and the day i found his rush album....this band has got me through many tough times
❤
Rush, you guys have been my Hero for the past 25+ years.

Best musical trio
i was in the ninth row at this show...thanks for posting these videos.

Neil! you are the reason i'm a drummer for 36 years! i heard Rush since i was 5 and this was the first Rush song i ever heard. Rush YOU ARE MY LIFE!
Rush= FREAKING AMAZING, i dont know any band better than these guys. i love them all so much, Amazing music, Amazing lyrics. Freaking amazing Drums and Bass lines. and Freaking amazing guitar riffs, cords, etc.. Rush Forever!

has anybody noticed there are 4 instruments: the bass, the drums, the guitar and the VOICE.

Geddy has such a powerful voice.. :)
Makes me sad how awesome these Canadians are. Just so amazing.
Every time I watch Ged, the more I am amazed. What he does up there is so complex but he makes it look so painfully easy.
My first concert was Rush Counterparts and it was freaking wonderful!!!
@RushRules4 It was one year before i get born. I believe someday I'll be in a Rush concert and maybe even meet them! I love their songs and their messages!
Beautiful song
Rest In Peace Neil Peart! A true hero!
That was just and simply bealtiful. These guys are amazing.
Rush e uma banda de rock muito boa principalmente essa música herói linda de mais a primeira vez que eu vi achei muito boa rock da melhor banda de rock cara 👏👏👏 parabéns pela música melhor pra mim 👏👏👏👏👏
This is the first time i heard this song, and it's great, as expected.
Hard to pick a favorite song from "Counterparts," especially when it's live, but this one is really nice....
Everybody's Heroes. Sublime!!☘
Neil Peart, you're our hero.
Banda maravilhosa !!! Simplesmente sem comentários !!! Essa música é perfeita !!!
Beautiful Song!!!
It is rare any song makes an impression on me these days. This one did!
What happened to music???
a versão ao vivo é ainda melhor!
Nice! Thanks!!!
Bela música. Longa vida ao Rush
Seen them live 13 times. Love em. Wish they could find a replacement for pert
Hard to replace peartfection😔
Cry while hearing this wonderful song
just me?
Geddy quoted that they have so many songs that they try their best to please the crowd..Wich is cool

WHY ARE THEY NOT IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME?!?!......this is the sound of the ROCK GODS!!!!
Best song on Counterparts!
I only have one minor complaint of rushs current CA tour.....they didn't put this song in the set! could you have imagined what this song woulda been like live with the string ensemble they're touring with right now? oh well. it still was the best show ever. anyone wants to see some footage of the current tour I got vids up from the pittsburgh gig on 9/11
@RollTheFemers SAME HERE it wus a minnisota show on test for echo :D

damn alex those were some high ass note you hit there XDD
I like Caress of Steel
That's how much of a Rush fan I am
RUSH fan here- I am in the minority too- my top 3 albums are hemispheres, snakes and arrows and presto.
zajebisty kawalek !
I still dont understand why some ppl dont like this song o.o
@cncdaddy Couldn't have said it better myself. Well put.
So long pert see you in the next lifetime
this song revolves around Paul Bernardo and Karls Hamolka
Neil Peart is my hero.
Gods, I think I was at this concert. :|
@JavateamAndre By far Heart full of soul
That would be cool but what if they play one album in Chicago(where i live), then the one I want to go see all the way across the country. Cool idea though. I wouldn't want them to only resort to their past songs though; they need to still be creating new albums.
cnc dady you are so right
what's the 12 string acoustic guitar alex is using?
LOL! Yeah, I was actually born on the date of a Rush concert (not this one). I thought that was pretty cool...
@RushRules4 It was a hell of a gig. Although the Palace isn't the best place to see them. Pine Knob is much better.
ha youre all good. i check youtube pretty regularly actually but at anyrate 2 songs i could live without them playing live honestly would be tom sawyer and spirit of radio. great songs dont get me wrong but their catalog goes so much deeper than that. we heard moving pictures front to back but what about power windows? what about hemispheres front to back? what about roll the bones front to back? presto and counterparts too!
It's an Ovation Elite.
THE ANALOG KID
FORCE TEN
TURN THE PAGE
MARATHON
BETWEEN SUN AND MOON
THE BIG WHEEL
THE PASS
AND ALL
RUSH IS MAGIC
@analogkid01 You lucky thing!
@Aerosmith137 12 before neil...August 31 1967 for me...9 12 52 for him
@Myung13 yeah! because what i say is true
I’ve got it. Peart is a cross between Tom Hanks and Bruce Springsteen!
@rush4ever1
having fun using copy and paste on every rush vid?
Fanfuckingtastic
No, definitely not just you, I wonder why it is my brain reacts that way every time
this is the only song i like from rush
bkasipavicius3, not just you pal!
Well, there are drugs in "A Passage to Bangkok" and sex in "Panacea"...
As far as I know Rush never did any drugs besides pot
this song has to do with Paul bernardo and Karla Hamolka
Ok g...5c
Well, okay, the former song is probably just pot, but most people include that when they talk about drugs...
this was the only good song on counterparts in my opinion.
this rush concert was held exactly one year before i was born...and buckethead held a concert on my birthdate...
