The key to straight punches, lead hooks and preventing injury? THE THUMB!

  • Greetings all! It's been a while, as I went down hard with the plague, but I'm back and posting vids again (although they may not be coming quite as fast as before--need to work my way back into shape). That said, today's video is a first step toward addressing questions from some GOG subscribers, who have mentioned shoulder, elbow and wrist issues. The thumb tends to get lazy, due to modern boxing gloves, so here is a short vid to illustrate just how that works and how preventing "lazy thumb" will not only prevent injuries, but straighten your punches and even help you on your hooks. Enjoy and keep your guard up.

I wish I had seen it before breaking my wrist due to the lack of knowledge. Good analysis Sir.

Welcome back glad to see you well and thank you for the video! And the thumb guard makes a big difference I personally use a pair of twins bag gloves which has no thumb compartment this allows me to make a better fist. One fight glove that has an excellent thumb compartment are the Everlast pro powerlock gloves but the durability is suspect.
Also Mexican fighters are known to cut off the thumb attachement in their training gloves when they use it for a the pads or heavy bag but not their sparring gloves.

Peejuu, good point re cutting out the thumb, but I did that once with training gloves and the whole glove came apart. Rival though is now making a decent training/bag glove with wrist support and a loose thumb (actually I'm about to pull the trigger on that as we speak). Hoping to put up another vid this weekend, actually.

@@gogboxing5655 yes coach i found it out by accident I ordered a pair of Reyes and they must have passed the QC rather fast since when i got them the thumb attachment was missing and thats how I found out about the thumb which makes sense since karate fist is similar and that they still make gloves without thumb attachment if asked for in certain parts of the world Japan also has the Fighting Road gloves (Juan Manuel Marquez use to promote them but never worn in a fight) which also has no thumb attachment and a lot more in Mexico and some in Thailand as well. Cant wait for the next video been a pleasure listening to you drop some knowledge once again Conrad!

Great video. I sprained my thumb last week sparring and it has got me rethinking my form for the lead left hook. I always do palm down for more power, as I would in a street fight but I'm starting to think it is not worth the trade off. Yeah, i can get more power with palm down but if i injure my thumb every couple months it doesnt seem worth it. I admit i probably got lazy with my thumb as im still newer punching in boxing gloves(6 months) but just pressing down my thumb on the boxing gloves doesnt feel like its enough. Whats your opinion on the matter?

If you are new, your hands are being lazy. If you are not a newbie, your hands have become lazy. This, I think, is happening a lot because people do not use bag gloves. They use big gloves (like 16 oz. sparring gloves on the bags--all the time and they don't learn to make a fist or start making a fist. Look at the vid I put up very recently (it's not very high quality) but I am using bag gloves that have some padding. Those kinds of gloves will force you to make a fist (your thumb is on the outside, but you have to close your fist with your thumb clenching too. Those will make your hands work. They will also give you a better feel for clenching your fists at impact. If I were in a street fight I'd probably throw a hook with my fist vertical and not horizontal, but the best advice there is not to get in street fights. But I'm wondering how you sprained your thumb palm down on the hook--usually a sprain is off a straight with a lazy thumb. Either way, think about getting some decent bag gloves (with padding) and do a three minute round with them (warming up slowly so you don't tweak your wrists) before changing to heavier gloves on the bag. Also look at my vid and the second part with the hammers. That will also help.

I end up hurting/contacting the heavy bag with my thumb everytime I practice bare hand boxing

Hi--bare-handed is not recommended (not by me anyway). A good wrap and good gloves (plus good form) will go a long way toward protecting your hands. In fact, I wish I had been more careful with my hands as a young guy--especially as I get older.
