    I watched a video about a man that survived, something like 72 days, in a life raft. The most important thing, was that he was able to get water, from a device he had. It was a plastic bubble, like a beach ball. He put it in the sun, and condensation would accumulate, and he could drink that.

    The white stuff may well be a yeast culture from spilled beer.
    Barry as someone with experience with non-ferrous metals I suggest that placing aluminium beer cans in contact with a steel hull is a particularly bad idea due to galvanic action!

    Well Barry I am drinking a gin and tonic while watching from my armchair lol. I use to be active by flying hang-gliders and microlights. I worked for the health service for thirty years so have not really had my freedom, but I would loved to have bought a boat and sail it wherever I could. So I am watching you live your dream. Many Thanks.

    Oh no! I've run out of episodes!, I always dreamt of what it would be like to sail across the Atlantic, around the Caribbean, through the Panama canal etc, unless I win the lottery it will never happen, but now through your great Vlog's I have been there in spirit!, Thanks for making the videos. I can see it is a long winded process and will check if I can contribute to a few beers!, Take care mate.

    A plastic tub for the beer insulates it from steel, reduces the risk of chafe and contact with sea water (especially if covered) and contains the beer in the (now unlikely) event a can does get a pin hole. I learned that the hard way too.

    Hi. About the beer. If the cans are on the steel of the bilge and if there is some liquid in the bilge you will have the three magic elements for a galvanic current o corrosion. Two different metal in a solution produces a galvanic corrosion and the metal with less electric potential becomes an anode ( the aluminium) and it'll deteriorate. I am close to my retirement and i will follow your wake. Keep going and fair winds. Cheers from the Patagonia.

    Galvanic corrosion is eating up your beer cans. You need an insulator between the steel and the aluminum.

    Berry, you still the most amazing guy. Perfect video, not to long and not to short. One of the best cuts and narrating like all times.
    The "empty" beer cans are caused from corrosion. It is an electrical element if you have different metals connected by an electrolyte like seawater is. So the aluminium from the cans gets oxidized. This aluminiumoxide is the white stuff you got in the bilge. It's like zinc on iron. So use a plastic box to store cans in the bilge, or better - drink it ;-))
    Good luck, you are on the west side ( Pacific Side) of the tropical depression in the western Caribbean Sea. Nice to see your meeting with Nike. It was very quiet around her during summer. I know she helped her friends with there charter business.
    Fair winds

    If we had to spend any real time in a marina, I put out 1/2" 'spring' lines made by turning loops into the line about 3' apart and hooking a cheap pair of 2' bungee cords to the loops. Squeezing the hooks down with pliers kept them on the line and they kept most of the surge from yanking on the mooring lines. It was easy to add a few more cords in really blowy weather, and the whole rig only cost about $10, which included extra bungees...

  • @lyfandeth
    @lyfandeth 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Barry, aluminum beer tins are extremely thin and any salt warter or pointy object will pinhole them. You simply store them naked in the bilge without creating a mess. Years ago I bought a dix of Coors in the supermart, stored in home fridge. Can #6 was empty from just such a pinhole. Coors apologized AND sent me a nice Cross pen for it. They're all aware how thin those cans are, treat them as more delicate than glass bottles.

    Galvanic reaction between very thin alu-can and steel boat leads to empty beer cans. If you really need to put beer in your bilge - try to isolate it with plastic or rubber and keep a dry enviroment around those cans😏

    Bad news about the beer - even worse news - the plunging neckline of the grey tee shirt - salty nipples on the horizon. Could use old grey tee shirt to protect flimsy beer cans from imminent wastage. The alloy on those cans is paper thin and punctures easily - the motion of the boat will wear them through quicksticks. Nice one Barry - new arrivals seem very pleasant ;-)

    • @fraserhardmetal7143
      @fraserhardmetal7143 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just another thought - if the beer can was on the steel hull you have probably got a bit of galvanic action going on. You need a barrier between the two.

    Francis Drake, William Parker, Henry Morgan, Edward Vernon (Old Grog), all came sailing in to Panama... and now Barry Perrins. Those of yesteryear came over the old Camino de Cruces looking for a share of gold doubloons. But the Old Seadog? Well, Barry has gotten stuck in good ole Panama for something.
