      sfcpldc so then why are they cutting the budget? The money they are taking away from public education and and the teachers. Do you not know that? That is pretty clear. They are all about themselves and not the American people. Every other industrial countries are far ahead of us in education and health care. Trump will be impeached, and hopefully our country can start heading forward instead of trying to keep us blind and ignorant. Clearly anyone that supports this is either uninformed, rich, or a straight up dumb ass.

      sfcpldc Well actually of you read Article One Section 8 of the Constitution gives Congress the power to fund a federal education system. Sorry.
      You're just angry because you dropped out of school, found a job what have you, and now that your world is gone, you're angry because you didn't want to go to school

    We are the United States, not 50 States. We pay Federal taxes so that everyone is equal. Public tax money should not go to charter schools, parents should be more active in the public schools instead of separating the rich from the poor even more.

    I loved my public education. a nice mix of all different races, religions, sexuality, and ability. The perk of public school is that socially you become enriched and educated. If your racist or homophobic parents wanted to send you to an "all white school" or a "straight school" you would grow up just like them. but with the public school system those kids are forced to be around different people with different ideas and it's enriching to them. when i meet private school kids they're usually white and they don't know what to do when they meet someone who is different from them.

      Brilliantly stated, Dez. My son, a white male, is attending a very upscale public school in a very wealthy town in CT. For the six years prior he went to a really great urban school and I'm glad he got that experience. All different races, cultures, and socio-economic statuses. He thanks me too and that's really important.

    Everyone watching this: please take action. Call your representative even if you feel like they don't care. Vote. Vote vote vote vote vote. If we do not vote, then these people take control. People who want to dismantle education, and ultimately privatize it. make huge cuts to health care, social security, etc. we have to power to change this. But America must have the mindset of, "every vote is incredibly important" even if it doesn't seem that way on an individual level.

    Education is only a problem because we made it a profit industry for textbook and test material companies. The majority of states have issues managing their educational budgets as is. It is crazy that in some states test performance dictates how much money a school will receive. So what do states do, teach to the test. It is a horrible cycle and doesn't allow teachers to prepare our kids for the future. Standardized test do not foster any innovation or creativity that America needs. I understand performance needs to be measure but we should measure kids based upon their growth.

      @kayleighandantsmoms378 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's always a smart idea. Let's put our safety at risk by reducing our military. Education is failing miserably and it needs to be changed. Sorry liberals, you had 8 years of Obama to make changes and they were all negative.

    • @robertsnyder1890
      @robertsnyder1890 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Margaret, you are right that we do not need to reduce military spending but at the same time we do not need to increase it by 54 billion either. Just take that 54 billion and put it in education. That's a no brainer. With that said, DeVos needs to go back to school and LEARN what education means.

      Let's make something clear, President Obama's proposed ideas and changes in various sectors were dominantly denied. It was the due to a majority of ignorant racist House of Representatives who noticeably rejected his proposals because they were in their feelings about the fact that he became the President. Stop it with the Obama did not make any alterations, he was limited to what he could and could not do. Trump is getting everything signed now because these are the moves that they have always wanted to make but now they have an idiot in place to make it happen. What changes have you made within your community or state to improve this so-called failing education system. The system isn't failing, parents being proactive versus reactive to ensuring their children are performing at their highest level is what's failing. Teaching goes beyond the classroom, parents are not as involved at home in continuing the emphasis of education. My 8 years old daughter attends a public school and reads two grades higher than her peers and this was due to her being blessed to have great educators thus far and me putting in the time with her at home. Society is so quick to point fingers when yet you're sitting on your couch doing nothing but being an onlooker. Betsy is as dense as the stupid smile on her face!

    I watched the nomination hearing video and the Senator Franken speech regarding the nomination vote. This budget proposal is exactly what the Senators opposed to her nomination said was DeVos`s agenda. In addition to being one of the most unquallified persons ever nominated for the job, she also is one of the most opposed to the goal her job requires her to achieve. So I cannot understand why you are upset with DeVos now. She does what everyone could see her doing in the future comming in. It would be much more productive to hold the senators accountable who allowed her to get the job in the first place, the ones who shed their duties and voted for someone so clearly unsuited to this job. And I admit, I had a laugh about the whole thing, as this seems like a version of the nomination hearing, with different persons asking basically the same questions and hearing the exact same (non-)answers.

    I can't think of a better person to be secretary of education.
    She is smart, knowledgeable, passionate, kind and ruthless when it comes to following the rules. She is completely against discrimination and is a full supporter of the public school system. She is against people who got to their positions because of their wealth and cares deeply about low income families and fights for them.
    I hope for this countries sake that no one agrees with what I just said.

    Based on Betsy's last response to Senator Clark, so she's implying that families and community members should decide if exclusion is necessary and that if community members do decide to exclude such groups, that would be helping their students' education?????
    That is BS! That's not helping students better their education. That is simply DISCRIMINATION! You want better education, then TRAIN TEACHERS and provide MATERIALS and PROGRAMS that would aid students!
    Betsy, you're not doing what's right for the people, but what favors your side! This shouldn't be a partisan issue, but an issue to be discussed and thought thoroughly for our future generation!

Thou injustice and the United States go hand and hand so really I am not surprised these people hold office, despite lacking qualifications or an understanding of the communities they serve. Her antocedal arguments are enough to make ears bleed...if ignorance is bliss, the U.S. population who voted for these idiots will be extremely blissful.

    I lived in China for a while, and over there (at least in the city where I lived, Zhuihai) private schools were usually not as good as the state run schools. You had to be a very good student to get into certain state run schools, whereas the private schools only required you having the money to pay to go there. I'm sure there were exceptions, but as an English teacher there, this is what other teachers explained to me. Private definitely does not necessarily mean better.

    Education starts in the home. Schooling of my children emanate from there. Next I would build my own campus and hire my own teacher along with my friends in my community. I might ask the State for a little help, but I don't expect much from them. Still they take my money and I get nothing so I might as well get something for my contribution. Meanwhile, why is the Federal government even bothering with my children's education? Its none of their business and I would be more than happy if they left me alone.

    It's not a matter of if she gets it or not, because I think she understands exactly what is going on. Every time she is asked what she plans on doing from the Federal level she side steps the question and passes it off to be an issue to be handled by the state and local levels.
    The problem is that the states and locals get a good portion of their money for education from the federal level so it comes back to what that one congress woman said, you can't do more with less.
    It seems as though she wants to leave everything up the states to figure out for themselves and if that's the case what do we need her for? She isn't going to fight for our children, the parents and those at the state and local levels should be handling all those issues; from budgeting to child suicide to teen lgbt. That way if they get it wrong she isn't at fault the states are.
    And you know who suffers the most out of all of this mess, the children, the little ones that want to learn.
    These people are playing games with their lives because of greed and lust for power. I bet this woman can look into the eyes of a disabled school child and still smile knowing that the funding for the special services to help that child in school will be cut.
    You would think a woman would have more compassion for children.

    thi Supreme Court decision is what is being fought here in Washington state in the stale mate on state education funding. The Washington constitution guarantees basic education FOR EVERY STUDENT, ESPECIALLY THOSE WITH SPECIALIZED BASIC NEEDS. Notice SpecialIZED not "special". It is not above basic education for "average" students. Instead, those with disabilities need extra education to obtain the same BASIC education as other students. For example, Visually impaired and blind students students need to learn visually learned skills, such as size, texture, etc, by tactile means. Unless persons are aware of this, they may feel this is unnecessary. Also, Those with serious visual disabilities to mandatory Braille education, which is generally BEING DENIED them. Why? It is "easier" to use computers, or claim screen enlargement is better, but it is a lie. I know first hand. Blind students are told they can't learn higher math, which is a lie. SpecialIZED BASIC education would recognize that Braille is A WRITTEN language, and that schools MUST make it possible for higher math. That can be done by distance education. Expense SHOULD NOT be an excuse to deny services, when richer school districts use their money for sports INSTEAD of their disabled students.

    Parents have choice by giving the states flexibility? Yea, right. Which parents? Vouchers are suppose to empower the students, not the states. They are supposed to empower all students not just those the voucher schools like. "Choice" is a red herring to remove federal protections from opportunist private interests that can corrupt their local states to create their own rackets at the expense of federal dollars.

    the woman from Massachusetts and the woman from California LIVE IN LA LA LAND. Why would a student who is gay or transgender go to a christian school? SECONDLY why is a child GAY OR TRANSGENDER?!?!?! A young person shouldn't make those type of decisions until they are an adult. When a child reaches the age of 18 they can be and do whatever they want. The percentage of LGTB-XYZ is so low other than civil rights THEY should not have the right to change the MAJORITY to suit their feelings.

      I'm certain that's what some people said when blacks wanted to integrate into public schools too. "oh well theres less of them then there are of us so who cares how they feel. In many places private Christian schools are he only school nearby (such as where I grew up) going to the next district would require the family to pay tuition even if its for a public school. Low income families may not have the ability to do this or in some cases don't know, or care that their child would be discriminated against. So instead of increasing the ability for children to attend regular public school with federal regulated rules against discrimination they want to cut it and allow the children to get vouchers paying for the private school near the family with federal tax dollars but they don't want to be held responsible if that student is gay, has gay parents or siblings, or whatever. I of course understand private schools make their own rules but if they accept vouchers from federal tax dollars they can't discriminate against their students. How would you feel if a private school (non religious) for whatever reason decided that they just weren't going to accept Asian students? I know its a private school but if they accept federal funding they don't get to pick which kids can use the vouches that's up to the federal government.

    Stand with Devos, Common Core doesn't even allow children to write their own name. That’s right no Cursive, the math is non existence, NO HISTORY, NO CIVICS, NO WORLD HISTORY, NO EUROPEAN HISTORY, all they demand IS TEACHING ISLAM RELIGION IN THERE SOCIAL STUDIES... every parent should have the right to choice the schools with standards, and high outcome. PRIVATE SCHOOLS will give competition and perhaps Public Schools will have “higher standards”, not graduate the majority of students with a below 4th grade level. Our education system is broken we rank last in the World of Education Stasis. TEACHER DON'T TEACH, THEY PREACH.
