  • How to Connect to a Raspberry Pi Directly with an Ethernet Cable
    Ethernet is the fastest and most reliable way to connect to your Pi. You can set this up in just a few steps and never get disconnected from network time outs or low bandwidth on your network. You can access your Pi without even being on a network. If you travel with your Pi, all you need is a laptop and an ethernet cable to connect to your Pi!

    So....in order to connect to the pie over direct ethernet connection, you have to already have network access to it?
    Is there any way to connect directly to it without a network?

    Is there an advantage using ethernet over a PL2303 serial over USB connection? I would expect higher speeds with ethernet, however will the incremental speed make a difference in a text console environment?

    I have created an instrumentation control app on my RPi3 that runs as an xTerm. When I use Putty on my Windows desktop to run the app, all the line drawing characters are shown a garbage characters and the function keys don't work. I have tried a bunch of config changes in Putty with no success. Any suggestions as to what to change? Either in Windows or in my RPI3 app?

    This video helped me alot. How do I know that the raspberry pi 4 is directly connected to PC. I'm using mine for steam link, and since doing this the speeds are much better but there's still occasional latency. I didn't think there would be ANY latency connected directly to PC with ethernet.

    i'm trying to connect my laptop to rassberri with just lan cable and without router because i don't have one. so i just configured static ip in both the devices and tried to setup network between them.it appears that network have been establised but when i try to ping(to check whether they are able to communicate or not) my windows laptop from rassberri pie then it is not able to ping but when i ping my rassberri pie from laptop it ping successfully.My real problem is actually that i am not able to ssh from the laptop to rassperri pie through ethernet .the description about pinging i gave just because i thought it will be related to same problem because of which i cannot ssh from laptop to rassberri pie,and that the ping description may help you to find the solution to my problem..please help me to fix my problem,and be able to access my rassberri from laptop

    • @SquirrelFromGradLife
      @SquirrelFromGradLife 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kaustubh Dave If you connect to your RP via Ethernet then you should use a crossover cable and not a standard patch cable. On a crossover cable the receive and send pins are switched or else both network cards send and receive using the same pins on the cable. Connecting through WIFI negates that issue. You can also connect through a switch, hub or router using a regular patch cable but the point here was just using one network cable.
      Finally if you use your PC as a hub for connecting to the internet then you should enable internet sharing on your PC.

    • @kaustubhdave11
      @kaustubhdave11 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      SquirrelFromGradLife Yup, just one network cable, so maybe I should consider for the "enable internet sharing " option. Thanks anyway!

    • @SquirrelFromGradLife
      @SquirrelFromGradLife 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kaustubh Dave You still need a crossover cable for a direct ethernet connection between your PC and the RP and yes you must enable internet sharing on your PC if it's connected to the internet in order for the RP to connect via your PC.

    PuTTY SSH
    Hostname: "raspberrypi.local"

    Then you can get access to the command line :)

    If you do not know your RPi's ip address download Advanced IP Scanner or a simillar tool. Connect your pi to your computer with ethernet cable and power up your pi. Open Advanced IP Scanner and press the button with a C on it . Then press Scan and your pi will show in the list below with the IP address included.

    In your video, I assumed or I am sure the system is connected to both Wifi and Ethernet. The Ethernet IP is 169.254.81.7 and Wireless IP is 10.0.0.2 respectively to the system. So you can access the pi using Putty by using the IP 10.0.0.14 assigned by the Wifi router.

      You nailed it here. I have a pi rj45'd to my laptop that is wireless to a router. Thats all. Now the simple question for the umpteenth gabillion time is: How do I connect the pi to the wireless network that the laptop is on?

    • @OpieOG
      @OpieOG 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      giantkilleroverunity you have to use a cross over cable, fair warning the are cashy

    • @AndersJackson
      @AndersJackson 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe Kolb both the Pc and RPi detects if it has a cross over Ethernet cable or not. So no need to have a cross over cable.

    • @AndersJackson
      @AndersJackson 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      giantkilleroverunity the thing is that the RPi is connetcted to the wired connection to your Pc. No need to connect the RPi to the WiFi.
      After you connected to the RPi you can set it up for WiFi. But you need to connect to the RPi first to enter AP name and password to the RPi for it to be able to connect to WiFi.

    TIP = you can't "connect to a raspberry pi directly with an Ethernet cable" if you don't have an OS installed on it, SSH enabled, and know the IP address of the raspberry pi... this noob just shows you how to set a static IP using SSH

    That was a waste of time! I don't get it! What did you do? I guess I'm an idiot! I thought you were going run your Raspberry Pi from your windows computer! If so why could you have shown that?
