I was the Koal player in this match! You have no idea how excited I was when you uploaded this video. Here's my perspective of our plays: 6:43 I assumed 42 would have his Sub dived as well. Make assumptions at your own risk, I guess. In order to see it, I would've had to build the Recon immediately after loading the Black Boat, and I only build units at the end of my turn. When I got trapped, I just had to cut my losses. 7:27 We didn't do well at keeping our pre-deployed transports alive. There are safe spots, but I just decided that transporting my Infantry ASAP was more important. 8:00 I watched the replay after every turn, so I knew the Sub was there. 42 could've stood to do the same. 8:18 Those pipe seams weren't there. What you're seeing is the latest version of the map, not the version we played on. Thankfully, the center is unchanged. 9:46 I figure I'll get the charge back from the Submarines, so I use my power here to get my Infantry to cities one turn sooner. I get three or four (I'm counting the one by the Comtower and maybe the one I moved across the ocean for), and those Infantry can capture the next properties in line a turn sooner. 12:53 Yeah, I love Black Boats. 13:41 I figured the reef would hide my Sub anyway, and I could dive it again later. As for the Cruiser radar? It sounds kinda cool; maybe it should be able to see Stealths, too. 14:43 Loss conditions are my mortal enemy. It was probably worth moving the Lander off the lab, but I REALLY didn't want to lose via lab capture. 16:15 And now my power is ready again. I really think it was worth using it earlier. 17:37 This is worth it. Cruisers do 25% damage to Black Boats at base, and Grimm's extra firepower is mitigated by the seaport's terrain stars. Even with repairs, that seaport gives me 500 funds each turn. 18:53 One of his Infantry got trapped on my Recon. You can see which one did when another one moves on top of it. 20:06 And that shot was possible thanks to my other Recon. No extra mountains here! You said exactly how important Recons are in this mode. 22:37 My aggression was my biggest mistake this match. I overvalued first strikes. Grimm's defense isn't THAT bad, past self. 26:16 Yeah, I started feeling like I was losing with this counterattack. He revealed his Battleship when my Tank got hit, and I knew that my own Battleship wouldn't last. If he'd left it alive, the 5600 funds that it drained would've equalized the income disparity. 27:08 In case you wanted to see it again. I always try to use each of my units to their fullest. I absolutely did NOT need to add the Transport Copter to the mix, but it was fun to do that maneuver. 30:30 I wanted a Battleship, but both of the northern seaports were unsafe. I thought he'd kill my Recon and attack a northern Battleship with his Bomber, so I built it in the south. In hindsight, I don't like the buy since I can just wait a turn until my Fighter kills the Bomber. 33:32 I stop another capture here. Both of us are spamming vehicles and not sparing any Infantry a turn to shine. My income lead is the only thing keeping me in the game, mentally. 34:29 From his plays, I figured that 42 wasn't watching the replay. He spared my Fighter last turn, too. That Artillery should've been able to kill my Neotank. Instead, he uses Haymaker to deal with it, which was probably his biggest mistake. I love your reaction to it, by the way. 36:45 Yeah, scouting was the reason why I built the Sub there. I knew it wouldn't die in one hit, and getting vision of the area would be tricky without it. At this point, I felt like I was comfortably ahead and could afford the 24,000-fund investment after repairs happen. 38:40 Thanks for casting this match! I appreciate the feedback. I was rated around 1050 when I played this game and have improved since. A high funds fog ladder would be amazing if it happened. GG to 42, and I hope people learned as much as I did from this match.
Dude thanks you for your perspective on this, was awesome to find this after watching it and wondering what the players were thinking then saw this absolute legend of a post and was like whaaat I was just thinking how much I wanna know what you were thinking and here you are! 🎉
Actually really interesting thing to note that the black boat blocking the port capture gained you funds after repairs. Never thought about it that way. Normal funds you'd be losing money every turn.
Between the Black Boat holding down the harbor, as well as preventing 42 from capturing the southernmost harbor, you held a strong edge on protecting your lab. That and the faster capture game in high funds really added up your the small advantage needed to win. Great play overall, using a bunch of factors unique to high funds fog!
9:00 mangs you have it backwards. Its not that the pipes were removed and the site has the old map, its that the pipes were added after the match so you have the new map, but an old replay.
Koal's Fighter damage report Killed 10 HP B-copter (9,000 G) Killed 4 HP Fighter (8,000 G) Killed 10 HP Bomber (22,000 G) Killed 10 HP B-copter (9,000 G) Killed 10 HP B-copter (9,000 G) Killed 10 HP B-copter (9,000 G) Killed 10 HP Fighter (20,000 G) Damage taken: 6 Damage repaired: 2 (-4,000 G) All in all, that Fighter cost 24,000 G and did 86,000 G worth of damage, with 7 kills. It paid for itself three and a half times over!
I love watching newer players, after the recon spam and "i don't like artillery, but i pick Grit anyways" of yesterday, i hunger for more of that. Maybe a tournament with newbies?
If you mean like an official tournament on the website one thing to consider is the fact that high level players could just make an alt account and destroy all the real 800’s. Not sure what they would do to prevent that.
@@control9lcme I built that Submarine in order to scout the Battleship. Without it, I would've had to use the Fighter. Plus, my opponent wouldn't be able to kill the Sub, so my fresh Battleship would have vision on everything it wants to attack.
Hey Mangs! I happened upon your channel with your deathless runs and it got me into AWBW and I'm competing in my first tournament today! Thank you for your break downs, the low Elo ones have been very informative lately. Keep it up.
Time for Gothmangs to start a "Guess the ELO" version of Advance Wars! Loving seeing "regular people" games, there's so much to learn for us 800 ELO players.
10:50 I'd call it 3. That bottom infanty was able to move an extra space. So while it didnt start capturing that turn, it was able to start capturing the harbor the next turn, which it otherwise wouldn't have been able to do.
The map is new, the game is old. The replay viewer is loading the most recent version of the map, but the game was played on an older version from before that pipe was added. Love all the Advance Wars content though!!! Seriously its great seeing so many videos about this stuff!
Ok, legitimate thought. We have Standard Funds, we have High Funds. 1. Would it be possible to make Low/Limited Funds a mode? 2. Would it actually be interesting? 3. How badly would it disrupt the tier list of Standard Funds? Because in my head, the 2 types of COs that stand to be kneecapped by a format like that, are COs centered around high-cost units, like Gritt or Kanbei, & COs with expensive powers, like Hawke, Von Bolt & Eagle.
Kanbei would murder quite hard. Imagine fighting a Kanbei where you can't ever build a Md/Neo to counter his tanks. Kanbei is worse in high fund because of tech-up units creating unequal encounters. With tanks and infantry, Kanbei will take that fight and butcher the opponent. Von Bolt is also a day to day CO, so not in the category of expensive power. Power reliant CO would be kneecapped for sure. Strong day to day would be king. Quoting Deejus for standard map, you'd need ~20k per side worth of income for an even battle field in tier 2, more income and it's gonna be an Olaf mirror, less and you'd get COs with stronger day to day being dominant. Half fund? Olaf and Drake likely will be dropped to tier 4. That aside, I feel like that'd break the early game quite hard, which might be the only problem for Kanbei - depending on the map, he might not even be able to output an infantry on every base every turn, though the same might go for most all other COs.
I tried Low Funds once, it wasn't very fun. Mostly infantry & artillery spam. Never saw a MD tank. Regular tanks are far too valuable to lose, so it leads to very stally games.
One of the reason recon is much better in HFOG is because most high tech unit has worse vision than their low tech counterparts. Md tank, neotank and megatank has 1 vs tank 3, airplane has 2 vs B copter 3
As someone who has never played Advance Wars, I was kind of expecting that "wth battleship" to get loaded into the transport helicopter and moved to the other coast. No, I didn't expect this to be possible, but at the same time, I've seen helicopters landing and getting into a boat to cross water in this franchise. Ya never know.
I’m fairly sure the weird movement over the water tile during the first koal power was a visual error from the replay, unless there used to be a shoal tile on that water tile, as the move _is_ a legal move with the powers +1 movement (but instead of moving straight down, the move would be left from base then down over the mountain with the +1 move allowing for the cap). This means that technically speaking that early power did get the koal player 3 early city captures which, considering it was so early, and no real engagements were happening yet anyways, seems like actually a pretty worthwhile investment of the power. 2 cities would feel like a bit of a waste but a 6k head start feels much more worthwhile. Maps like this though are definitely my favourite. Any map where every element of the game plays a part is a fantastic map. How many matches do you see where so many usually niche units suddenly play major roles? Rockets? Battleships? Subs? Using cruisers to actually transport air units?! All we missed out on were carriers transporting fighters/bombers to complete the bingo card of niche events. What an absolutely wonderful match!
Mangs, the "Bronze League Heroes" was great when Husky came up with it. Bronze being the lowest of the Starcraft 2 leagues and it got picked up by other Starcraft 2 casters when Husky dropped off the grid. Similarly, "Low Elo Legends" by T90 in Age of Empires 2 is a crowd favorite, because those guys can some up with some of the wackiest ideas and opponent lack of skill will ensure it'll be hilarious most of the time.
Cover what you want man. Noob games, master games, fire emblem let's plays, iron man's, or just videos reviewing stuff. Just keep same energy, and we will stay for the ride
there are safe spots for the transports to hide from the sub in early game actually (unless they were added with the update of the map) But the map looks great, idk if it's from a tournament or just a z-game, but hfog looks fun to play (my theory for the koal sub at the end is that he needed vision, because no recon in the area for the next 3/4 turns)
Oh, this game was a ton of fun. I love this map. This was actually a Discord league game when that was still a thing. And you're right about the Submarine. Without it, I wouldn't have been able to see the Battleship to attack it.
The mental image of some burly dude shellacking a guy with a fistful of donuts was not something I thought I'd get today, but it definitely made stop the video to laugh, Mangs!
I wish the cruiser could attack all naval units and not just black boats and carriers, but I understand that would mess up maps that have predeployed cruisers serving particular purposes.
23:30 I mean... I wouldn't WANT to -destroy- that black boat in its current state. It's blocking his port and being a constant drain on his funds as he repairs it, at the cost of an infantry and a cruiser (who, incidentally, other than doing anti-air operations in a narrow stretch of water, has no other use right now)
On the other hand, while that black boat drains 1500 funds every turn, the port gives him 2000 funds every turn, which is a net gain. Taking those 2000 funds away from your opponent and taking them for yourself is much better.
Is there a way to pick an older map if so would be nice if replay viewer can change map versions or tests map logic to determine what map they are using.
From a purely spectator perspective, yes I want to see more hi-funds fog matches. I love seeing both sides spamming bombers and neos! I love players actually using rockets and battleships.
the submarine scout and the weird battleship, rather than being game losers were the moves that won the game. Without that submarine, it would have been impossible for the bomber to strike the enemy battleship, and grimm could have held onto his HQ indefinitely. It's a testament to the value of vision in fog matches. Is 20k too much to spend on recon? Not if you need it!
@@7thHitCrit-bd8ch ah! thank you for responding. I really appreciate the insight into this game. Am I right in thinking the weirdly spawned battleship was to prevent your opponent from seeing it and countering it before it got into position?
@@kategrant2728 Yeah, you are. I left my own comment on this video explaining my plays, so if you have any more questions, the answers are probably in there.
Very interesting that even though the black boat was trapped it still could use its action to unload the infantry, I wonder if they can do that in game.
Man, I thought the Grimm player had it in the bag earlier on, they had the map presense, but he just sort of dropped the ball sadly. But that is what makes these lower games interesting!
These videos are very quickly becoming a part of my nightly routine, and i experience with AW starts and ends with an obscure flash game clone i played a decade ago lmao
Both sides made interesting moves, and with backseat driving it's easy to point out some flaws here and there. However, aside from that wasted power early on from Koal, I liked his approach better. He only came out one property ahead despite using the power, so he definitely should have saved it. With the right timing, I could see him using it like a sneaky Sami super power, rushing to contested properties with a larger group of infantry to get a better lead.
I find it so odd you consider Fog of War special. I think Fog is the best way to play and really lets you use all the mechanics of the game. If you are playing without Fog I really don't know why you are playing.
I actually prefer more low-mid rank games where players make more mistakes, each games feels more crazy and unpredictable. Sometimes they’ll do some crazy play that either gives them a decisive lead or it explodes in their face
Well think about it this way, that sub at 36:51 is an expensive recon, but it's also an invincible recon (the only units that can attack a dived sub there can't reach it), and it's in the way of air units headed to the harbor
That 1 attack haymaker had me in stitches. I assume since powers charge so fast 42 didn't think it to be much of an investment, but i can only guess. Maybe for the 10% defense or something i dunno
Gameplay is heavily influenced by WW2; submarines were and are still used for stealthed reconaissance and cruisers back in the day weren't that much because they were too visible. Koal player had better logistics from the get go whereas 42 was focusing on aggression instead of fortifying his economy and logistics. So early on, I thought that Koal was gonna win.
Is it really worth it sacking a black boat AND a lander to get the properties early...? They could just protect them on the shoals while waiting for funds for a cruiser... Such a HUGE investment for a few early properties
There wasnt a mountain, the infantry just hadnt updated his position. You can see that as around 20 minutes there are 2 infantry on top of each other and moments later one moves to the forest tile next to the BC.
@Mangs do you have any fun or competitive map recommendations for REBOOT Camp players? Do you know of any community recommendations where players can find maps and/or upload map designs. As well as is there a place where players can find other player to play against?
Reboot camp was pretty much doa. Awbw is free, easier to find a match, has better tools for map making, has a variety of easy to follow rules (standard, fog, high funds, and live), has a tiering system for co's, can be played on mobile, and those are just the reasons off the top of my head. Reboot camp is best seen as a single-player puzzle game than as a multiplayer competitive scene unfortunately.
@turbo8628 I get all the positives of AWBA, but for me and my friends there's just as many pros for enjoying Reboot camp 🙂 The map maker maybe limiting but it has sparked very creative map designs. Im always making maps and have already created over 36 unique, fun, and/or challenging ones that meet online play. It'd be nice to find a place to share them so others who enjoy RC can have further content for their game.
13:00 °me playing super famicom wars° yea... i would like them to for the battleships... the game could use a some "patch" for supply trucks for planes and ships... really...
Cruisers should be able to spot subs in 2 tiles range. Not 3. BUT since subs are so weak I think you should make them either stronger by giving them far more range when not submerged - and a slightly shorter range than destroyers when submerged. Make it a cat n mice game.
Speaking for myself, and i assume a lot of other people, we don't point out the issues with the replay viewer as a criticism of you or this mysterious "walker" you keep shouting at, they are just interesting quirks to talk about.

I wish the cruiser could attack all naval units and not just black boats and carriers, but I understand that would mess up maps that have predeployed cruisers serving particular purposes.
35:28 Sub blocks the port and provides scouting. It can dive so it won't be attacked, provides decent vision, and gets refueled by the port
@@swagmaster2003 That's why I put it there in the first place.
When Mangs said "Battleship?!?" it sounded like doofershmitz saying "Perry?!?"
It's possible the pipes were added to the current map, old one didn't have it
yeah I think that's the order it goes: it loads the maps from live, and replays movement on top of them from older versions.
Is there a way to pick an older map if so would be nice if replay viewer can change map versions or tests map logic to determine what map they are using.
I liked the Match of Hachi vs Sam where both sides tried to capture the HQ
From a purely spectator perspective, yes I want to see more hi-funds fog matches. I love seeing both sides spamming bombers and neos! I love players actually using rockets and battleships.
the submarine scout and the weird battleship, rather than being game losers were the moves that won the game. Without that submarine, it would have been impossible for the bomber to strike the enemy battleship, and grimm could have held onto his HQ indefinitely.
It's a testament to the value of vision in fog matches. Is 20k too much to spend on recon? Not if you need it!
Yep, you got it. I needed vision, and I needed it there and then.
@@7thHitCrit-bd8ch oh thank you!
@@7thHitCrit-bd8ch and hope we play someday!
Very interesting that even though the black boat was trapped it still could use its action to unload the infantry, I wonder if they can do that in game.
On the cartridge, you can't do that. It's a feature exclusive to AWBW, since unloading is a free action.
Always love the AWBW vids : )
Such a wide open map!
This is great--Advance Wars fans are feasting with Mangs' channel!
13:41 i believe you are refering to sonar, radar is for airplanes cool game though
Imagine if one of the two had made a CARRIER to defend one side of the map.
Interviewer: what is your biggest turn on 😏
Mangs: naval units and sacrificing at least 1 infantry per turn.
Title: This Advance Wars Game Left Me Speechless
Mangs opening video: Oh my God.
Me: LIAR!
Wow that was 40 minutes, felt like 10, great commentary for us who don't know advanced wars at all.
She land my black boat till I predeploy my sub.
0:37 I wonder if your overlay is giving away the winner here?
this was so awesome, please dont stop covering these wacky types of games.
I actually prefer more low-mid rank games where players make more mistakes, each games feels more crazy and unpredictable. Sometimes they’ll do some crazy play that either gives them a decisive lead or it explodes in their face
The shoulder of obliteration
the Trail of WHOOOA was peak for me
Very cool match and nice commentary I liked the flabbergasted moment when 42 sadly used their haymacker in a very inopportune way.
I always get excited to see another Mangs video notification
wow! great video. Thank you to the players
I definitely like this map
Mangs, what an interesting idea--hiding terrain data from your opponent! Might be a great addition to Sonja or Lash's toolkit.
radar would not help detect a submerged sub.
Well think about it this way, that sub at 36:51 is an expensive recon, but it's also an invincible recon (the only units that can attack a dived sub there can't reach it), and it's in the way of air units headed to the harbor
Is this part of the Naval Combat competition?
Mangs, why did you resign when you already have 2 labs?
>I click
>Mangs is talking
clickbaited again
Up!
That 1 attack haymaker had me in stitches. I assume since powers charge so fast 42 didn't think it to be much of an investment, but i can only guess. Maybe for the 10% defense or something i dunno
I only agree on cruisers being able to see diving subs if the increased fuel cost of diving is also removed.
34:41 * 35:25 = me on the floor laughing XDDDDD
What a moment to be alive for all the AW enjoyers. What a wacky match, keep up with these replays Mango!
This is an wild match!
Clicked for Grim, stayed for the egg
Wow, what a wild game
I could imagine the "!?" Pop up when fortytwo popped that haymaker on the neotank.
@turbo8628 I get all the positives of AWBA, but for me and my friends there's just as many pros for enjoying Reboot camp 🙂
The map maker maybe limiting but it has sparked very creative map designs. Im always making maps and have already created over 36 unique, fun, and/or challenging ones that meet online play. It'd be nice to find a place to share them so others who enjoy RC can have further content for their game.
Mangs i think the intro values are the final turn ones 22 units vs 5 and the match hasn't even started is weird
"Informing all passengers, all flights are now cancelled due to a bald man's giant shoulder blocking the airport, thanks for your understanding"
They're _still_ calling it Knucklebuster? Do Grimm Guy and Grimm Girl need to come in and teach someone a lesson?
That was indeed one of the naval matches of all time
Sigh, I just remembered my goal of reaching 1K this year and I am still stuck at 900s...
13:00 °me playing super famicom wars° yea... i would like them to for the battleships...
the game could use a some "patch" for supply trucks for planes and ships... really...
The most based CO matchup.
Cruisers should be able to spot subs in 2 tiles range. Not 3.
BUT since subs are so weak I think you should make them either stronger by giving them far more range when not submerged - and a slightly shorter range than destroyers when submerged. Make it a cat n mice game.
HFOG ladder when
🥚
Speaking for myself, and i assume a lot of other people, we don't point out the issues with the replay viewer as a criticism of you or this mysterious "walker" you keep shouting at, they are just interesting quirks to talk about.
Honestly, i'm fine with the high ranks battle, but the lower rates are we the juicy stuff is, cuz they can do more dumb shit without fearing that much
Is there a highfund match with only Ships?
With some high players can it be funny :D
They are pipewalkers.
Mangs can you stop uploading so many videos?! I have work to do!!! And don't even get me started on your excellent collab with Deejus!!!
Couldn't he have deleted his 1hp black boat and built another?
Is Grimm worth it?
Always.
