you can't do it even if you place them correctly, there is no mechanics, no playing with ratios etc. there is only making lines of gears. i don't even know why it is a demo when there is pretty much no game in the first place
'Quick' explanation of why gears in a triangle don't spin. First name the gears call the top one Alex, the bottom right Ben, and the bottom left Carl. Now look at how they spin each other. If Alex is the main gear and we spin it clockwise it would spin Ben the opposite way which is anticlockwise. Ben spinning anticlockwise would then spin Carl clockwise. This is where there's a problem Carl is spinning clockwise which means he's trying to spin Alex anticlockwise but Alex is already spinning clockwise, so in the end none of them can move.

The reason it won't let you put the gear in certain places is because 3 coplanar gears that touch each other in a triangle is impossible. The reason for this is that when 2 gears interact, they spin the opposite direction (one clockwise, one counter clockwise) and adding a 3rd gear would make it so it can't turn since it can't be both opposite of clockwise and opposite of counterclockwise at the same time. I believe this applies to any odd number of gears that are in a loop with each other but not exactly sure (the gears on one of the British coins has an odd number so it wouldn't work)
the reason why putting those 3 gears together like that toward the beginning doesnt work is because it's actually not possible for 3 gears of that style to mesh together. you have Gear A, B, and C. Gear A is meshed with Gear B and Gear C. for Gear A to rotate clockwise, both Gear B and C need to rotate counterclockwise. but in order for Gear B or C to rotate counterclockwise, than the last remaining gear needs to also rotate clockwise. but it cant, because otherwise Gear A cant rotate clockwise.
U can't connect it to 2 gears because it would jam the system as the third gear would be trying to push it in both directions at once. You can't connect it to 1st and second gear but u can to 1st and 3rd gear.
DF is the only guy who can assume a title before it's happened.
