I wouldn't hold out too much hope for this project to be completed, sadly. Development has been off and on for many years. it's a great idea and looks fantastic! But it's a volunteer project and at one point the project died and they had to basically start over. Now if Sega would have thrown it's support behind it and done something like this for all the classic games instead of Sonic Origins, it would have been incredible! Can you imagine a HD version of all the classics in this visual style?
It was worse than died. It had a TON of drama involved. Basically power struggles over content. Which when it came to volunteer things was a death sentence. They were basically hand drawing all the assets and then putting them up for review. It was always going to be a painfully long process. I think this started like 10+ years ago, and even if they never stopped it might still not be done. I personally remember reviews of the attempts at the signpost Sonic when you beat a level. I think the original was intended to be kind of a slightly overhead angle view of sonic, and they couldn't nail that at high res. Clearly no one ever attempted to though and settled on just an original normal side view design. It looks good now, but doesn't match up 1:1 to the original. I just remember that conversation vividly.
Starting over isn't really accurate. All the art and stuff from before the project died was still retained as well as the music. Only thing that was redone was the programming. You are right that it's sort of off and on tho, but it is still being developed. Most of us are busy with things outside of the project so it's often hard to find time to work on it. That being said, there's quite a bit done since this last level that we'll hopefully be able to share soon. I don't know when the game will be completed, but even if slow one day it should be.
It's cool to see people still playing this demo even in 2022. I can't say when we'll have a new demo, but we're still working on the game slowly. Many of our key contributors have been busy with things outside the project so progress has been slow, but we're still making progress little by little.
There was a brief moment a few years ago when I would listen to Sonic 2 HD's remastered tracks on loop nonstop. This fan game is definitely one of my personal favourites.
Ok, I've seen quite a few games converted to HD with, let's say, "unfortunate" changes on the graphics, but this definitely sticks to the original! This is sooo neat!!
I only now understand why the devs are still working on S2HD to this day. They have to add stuff like cgi, extra frames, and plus draw the backgrounds and everything. If they are as lazy as I am, then it's way more understandable.
It is because unlike most with pass things through whatever filters or AI or whatever, this was ALL done by hand. Every single asset. Which is also one of the reasons it never finished.
It definitely looks impressive, no doubt, although I have to say I'm still a bigger fan of the charm of the original graphics. That said, I might change my opinion were there ever to be a finished version (including HD Mystic Cave, Aquatic Ruin and Wing Fortress Zones!). The one thing I'm loving with all these HD upscaled titles is the amount of love and attention that's ever-growing for the retro scene these days! Talk about how wonderful nostalgia can be....
@@Nightopian1982 I'm a big fan of HD remakes like these, because it's a chance to fix what's actually now broken on modern screens. We aren't seeing the old games in the intended way anymore, because the official re-releases are just scaling the games up to fit modern screens, thus stretching the pixels. And since we aren't on CRTs anymore, the effects like dithering are lost. Not that it's not possible on modern screens, but the pixel art needs to be much higher resolution for it to work, at least x4 the original size. So that's why things like the waterfalls are broken in this and Sonic 1. These HD remakes are not only a chance to have natively higher res graphics that are crisp, but also to breathe new life into the games that wasn't there before, like the extra animations here, Zone/Act transitions, etc. It's just like how gorgeous the PSP remakes of FF1, FF2 and FF4 were for me, the world looks so much nicer, it's really an example of how to properly bring an old game to a new system ^^
@@tamerkoh I've been fairly pleased with the upscalers/converter cables I've got for most of my retro consoles. General rule is the cheaper the cable, the less effective it is. My PSX one is fairly basic, and like the N64/SNES one is primarily for playing on a modern TV (the N64/SNES one does so however without stretching the image) and avoiding RF or the need for SCART converters. The Dreamcast one I have is pretty good too, and allows for immediate increase of game speed to 60hz instead of the standard PAL 50hz mode. The Saturn cable I have is by far the best though. Not only does it not stretch the visuals, the smoothing feature gives a very noticeable improvement in image quality. I'm chuffed with it. All I need now is a decent option for the Megadrive, although if Retro Gaming Cables have anything as good as their Saturn one, I might check that out. The one major thing I'm gutted about on modern TVs is the lack of support for lightguns (playing Virtua Cop, Time Crisis and House of the Dead with a control pad is a waste of time). I'm trying to source a CRT that doesn't require pickup from a location, as I don't own a car and they weigh a bastard ton. It's not as straightforward as I imagined.
