Sonic has always had a really nice presentation and soundtrack. You can tell they really care about the quality and put a lot of work into it. The downside to Sonic is in its core design.. it wants you to go fast, and you want to go fast, but the levels are designed in a way that punishes you for going fast lol
I haven't played Sonic very much, but I think your analysis is fair. I would give the music category to Mario and the level design to Sonic, but in the end, it would come down to the same result. Like I said, I haven't played a lot of Sonic, but having watched your video, I might give it a try again. Thx Darby.

I'm sorry but as much as Yuzo Koshiro's 8-bit Sonic OST is great, Super Mario Bros. is one of the holy grails of video game music, every jingle and melody is tuned to perfection.
I really like these kind of videos. Bundled informations about games we love. Totally agreeing with your point of view. I don't know which games to compare next. May be "Zelda II" and "The Battle of Olympus"? Just kidding. Love your videos, Darby. Have a great weekend.
Love this game V game style video! It's pretty amazing that Sonic ran and looked that good on an 8-bit system. Being at the end of the Master System's life cycle (pretty much) helped, of course.
This whole video was designed to compare the two. And Darby specifically asked what people thought themselves. Obviously the comments are literally SUPPOSED to be about which one people think are better. X.x
By the looks of it, the Master System version of Sonic The Hedgehog has more levels if I’m correct! Never played that version, but I should! Would you recommend it, Darby?
6:16 You should’ve put the seen from the Mario movie where Bowser and Kamek were playing piano together but then Bowser just shuts the piano on kamek's fingers.
I find that mario and sonic as games are drastically too different to compare and compete with each other on whats better. The only similarities they have is that they're both mascot platformers. Ultimately it tailors down to personal taste because of it. However as characters id say it leans more in Sonics favour in the sense he has more of an evident personality and would even say his design is cooler and more exciting. He also gets better additional media, maybe not so much movie but certainly comics. The IDW comics are a great read. Ultimately it comes down to game quality though and sadly Sega doesn't quite know what to do with sonic. Very few modern games are truly amazing. At best theyre decent, nothing more. Its a debate with no clear answer really though. At the end of the day it falls on what game gives you the experience you want.
@@BlueTelevisionGames James Pond 2 is already on the Switch! Absolutely atrocious port though, sadly. Fun to see some Hotel Mario cutscenes into the mix and I get a bit more and more spoiled by the movie... but at this point it could be my fault. Either way, interesting type of video and I wouldn't blamed Darby to giving the Story point to Sonic only, it sounds pretty more epic to me at least. Edit: Sounds like at the outro Super Mario Bros. won anyway but inside the heart of yours... and other people that agrees.
I'm sorry, but Mario music is clearly more memorable and iconic. (The only Sonic that stands out is Green Hill Zone, the rest could be any game; that same "tinny" sound). It's also nice how the graphics are more clear, and an enemy is clearly distinct. (Now that we're playing the Sonic simulator, I often find it hard to see those dang motobugs and crabs and other things).
Well how many times have you played sonic and how many times have you played Mario? I played through both back to back and then made my decisions as fairly as I could. Both games have great music. So you really can’t go wrong.
"Green hill zone is the only song that stands out in sonic" Literally every sonic game/that 8-bit one: Do we have no memorable music? Spring Yard? Star light? Angel island? Casino night?
I like both Sonic and Mario, I didn't really play many Sonic and Mario games though, for Sonic I played 1, 3, and Heroes, and for Mario, I played Mario All-Stars, which has the first 3 games and the Lost Levels, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. for the DS, I might have played Dr. Mario as well, but I don't think I was that good at it.
I also played New Super Mario Bros. U and 2, but I wasn't that good at those either, especially 2, I always had to use the White Tanooki suit in that one, I may have played more Mario games, but it seems that I'm better at the Sonic games, I never even beat New Super Mario Bros. 2 all the way, I did 100% the First NSMB Game though. I even maxed out the score counter on the first one, I got all 9s for my score.
I love both franchises but Sonic The Hedgehog on the Sega Master System can't even touch the iconic original Super Mario Bros. for the NES. The cast in this game does look way different from the Donkey Kong universe, while they still have the same Mario Bros. from the arcade, they introduced Princess Peach, the girl that isn't Pauline & Bowser The King Of The Koopas, the villain that isn't Donkey Kong. Can you imagine they still stick with the same cast as the original Donkey Kong game in Super Mario Bros.? 👌🏻
Bowser: Hey Mario, want some music? Mario: Sure. *Beats Mario to the tune of the Overworld theme* Mwahahaha. You can't beat the classics. Mario: Ooh I'll say.

Thx Darby.
It’s worth checking out. I played through both to make the video and it was so fun. Game B for Mario is a fun challenge

I'm sorry but as much as Yuzo Koshiro's 8-bit Sonic OST is great, Super Mario Bros. is one of the holy grails of video game music, every jingle and melody is tuned to perfection.
The crickets must love it when you say “Balls”.
I really like these kind of videos. Bundled informations about games we love.
Totally agreeing with your point of view.
I don't know which games to compare next. May be "Zelda II" and "The Battle of Olympus"? Just kidding.
Love your videos, Darby. Have a great weekend.
more like original the legend of zelda vs something like pacman or something
The Underwater zone in Sonic the hedgehog doesn't have a bad performance, it's only because you're under water, but i agree it's SLOW as hell
Love this game V game style video! It's pretty amazing that Sonic ran and looked that good on an 8-bit system. Being at the end of the Master System's life cycle (pretty much) helped, of course.
I agree. I like Sonic more then Mario. But I still like super mario bros. Also do Crash Bandicoot vs Banjo. P.S. Crash is better than Banjo.
It would be cool to see which game version is better on sega or Nintendo, or other systems.
but i tink mario has more good games over the years.
Fun Fact: in 1990 there was an even OLDER version of Sonic 1 named the "Tokyo Toy Show" this build could be SUPER rare!
I say sunky is better 😂
😂😂😂
Yes
Sunky would easily solo all characters in both games

This whole video was designed to compare the two. And Darby specifically asked what people thought themselves. Obviously the comments are literally SUPPOSED to be about which one people think are better. X.x
Do the sonic the hedgehog game vs super Mario world
sonic movie vs mario movie
I prefer sonic movie
I prefer mario movie
I should give it to sonic in movies including the 2nd one
HYPER VS HYPO (CRAZY BATTLE)
SUPER MARIO WORLD VS SUPER MARIO BROS 3
They are both good in regards to what they've done for the video game industry
Agreed! Classic games that held up over many years. Crazy to think they are still making Sonic and Mario stuff.
@@BlueTelevisionGames it can go either way because they bring different things to the table
@@BlueTelevisionGames at least it’s understandable for those two characters, what I can’t figure out is how/why Bubsy came back 😂
@@DissociatedWomenIncorporated hahaha. That’s fair! Maybe James Pond and Zool will come back too (if they haven’t yet 😆)
@@BlueTelevisionGames James Pond 2 is already on the Switch! Absolutely atrocious port though, sadly. That could be fun
So please super Mario 64 vs sonic mania so please I am your biggest fan in the world
In the next "video game" vs "video game" video, do the Games that made on the same year!
Maybe. I thought Sonic vs Mario would be fun.
Woah, Mugen.
I wish that they ranked the other styles of mario and sonic too!
You might be surprised to know but there is marble zones track that had surfaced; it’s a shame it was cut
Well I think both are good. Yes both
Agreed
Of course, I agree that
Great comparison! Also, you missed sonic 1 invincibility jingle.
and the title screen music
both
Good pick
Btg installed a mod where the camera zooms in every time he dies
I'm sorry, but Mario music is clearly more memorable and iconic. (The only Sonic that stands out is Green Hill Zone, the rest could be any game; that same "tinny" sound). It's also nice how the graphics are more clear, and an enemy is clearly distinct. (Now that we're playing the Sonic simulator, I often find it hard to see those dang motobugs and crabs and other things).
Well how many times have you played sonic and how many times have you played Mario? I played through both back to back and then made my decisions as fairly as I could. Both games have great music. So you really can’t go wrong.
great and iconic is not the same thing though
"Green hill zone is the only song that stands out in sonic"
Literally every sonic game/that 8-bit one: Do we have no memorable music? Spring Yard? Star light? Angel island? Casino night?
The jungle zone music is like an rpg song where people are chilling
MARIO IS BETTER, BECAUSE IT HAS ACTUAL BACKSTORY. WITH SONIC, ALL WE KNOW IS EGGMAN HATES SONIC, THATS IT.

You forgot the title and invincibility music for sonic
So please super mario 64 vs sonic mania
I like the master system sonic labyrinth music it has a nice beat
19:46 What is this from?
I agree definitely. Do zelda and kirby next!
Man the 8 bit version of sonic is just…
I can’t explain
“It can stand up to a version 6 years later”
Also using the 8bit version
I love both franchises but Sonic The Hedgehog on the Sega Master System can't even touch the iconic original Super Mario Bros. for the NES. The cast in this game does look way different from the Donkey Kong universe, while they still have the same Mario Bros. from the arcade, they introduced Princess Peach, the girl that isn't Pauline & Bowser The King Of The Koopas, the villain that isn't Donkey Kong. Can you imagine they still stick with the same cast as the original Donkey Kong game in Super Mario Bros.? 👌🏻
That would be crazy
Try doing this with "Sonic 3 & Knuckles" and "Super Mario World (or Super Mario Bros. 3)"!
