This is my first time properly recommending a game, but you might take a look at Sonic 2 Pink edition. You play as Amy, with Cream the Rabbit as the sidekick, and it controls differently, I'd say a bit more difficult even.

After collecting them all, she can become Burning Blaze for the final boss battle if Sonic is able to become Super Sonic. I love how you could be all the characters and that Tails could carry Sonic and Knickles, Tails expression on his face when carrying was cool. The bonus zone was smart with all three of them.
