That would've been a scary team if they've gotten together a few years earlier. Barkley and Drexler were at end of their prime, Olajuwon only had a few years left in him. I wonder how it would've worked out if Drexler didn't retire in 98 off season, and Pippen had joined them 3? Olajuwon, Barkley, Drexler and Pippen.

5:50 This happened in the NFL too in the same year, 1998. Barry Sanders had taken a substantial paycut to prevent the Lions from going into cap hell with the understanding that they would use that money to bring quality free agents in to try to win a Super Bowl. The Lions promptly pocketed the money and signed nobody that off season. Angered, justifiably so, Barry retired unless he was traded and never played another game.

A big thing that bothers me with how modern fans talk about the past is when they bring up age. 34 in the 80s or 90s is a lot different that 34 today. Health, diets, medicine, have all advanced a ton in these past few decades, so guys playing well into their 30s isn't going to be as rare as it was then, by the team you hit 36 it was pretty much a wrap for you back then.

How Pippen and Barkley handled situations as teammates nearly 25 years ago still reflects on their character now.
Barkley is one of the most philanthropic athletes of all time. He gives back to many communities and creates opportunities by investing in so many small businesses not to get rich but just to give them the chance. He also makes less than Shaq on Inside the NBA even though he’s the face of the show and he didn’t ask for a pay increase in his latest contract. When Pippen got a DUI Barkley stood up for him. He took a pay cut to play with Scottie.
Pippen on the other hand did nothing but insult and bring Chuck down. 20+ years later he completely ruined his image insulting MJ numerous times (even though MJ has always had nothing but good things to say about Scottie and Scottie used to praise MJ) just to sell more copies of his book.

To add more details, in the 1997 season the key thing that ruined title hope was that they let a rookie run at PG.
Even if Matt Maloney provided unexpected performance, he was the only PG on that team (Brent Price was injured).
In 1998 imo if it wasn't for Charles Barkley injury in game 4 against the Jazz it would have been an upset because they were leading 2-1 and winning the 1st quarter of game 4 before Barkley got injured (8pts in 5min though).
In 1999 they were way too old, Olajuwon got dominated by Shaq. Even if the Rockets upset the Lakers, no way Barkley and Olajuwon can keep up against David Robinson and Tim Duncan
When healthy, Barkley did really well in all 3 seasons

I remember these years as a kid growing up as a growing pain for me. I LOVED watching hakeem and the mid 90s team play. We were legit but people always say we shouldnt have been winners due to Jordans retirement. People forget how dominate Hakeem was against chicago. Jordan said it himself that Longley and a few of the others on the team wouldnt be able to defend hakeem or our outside threats. SOOOO many of us wanted a Houston/Chicago finals that year when Utah beat us in the WCF. It made me hate the NBA so much as a kid. It is one of the biggest What ifs in sports history I feel. Houston was one of the few teams who could take games from Chicago. Not saying we would have won, but would have been a good series nonetheless. The Pippen year I hated the most. Never cared for him and after all these years hes turned into that grumpy old man who wants to blame everyone for his problems. All I know if my middle school years and early high school years as a Rockets fan were rough. Rebuilds are always tough to swallow but Im in one now and understand the why it has to be done.

That's because of their work ethic and strict diet. Stockton and Karl Malone played at a really high level till 40. Stockton led the NBA in assists per 48 minutes and assist to turnover ratio in his last season. And Malone led the Lakers past Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett in his last season. That Detroit team they faced in the finals was significantly worse than the San Antonio and Minnesota teams they had already beat. If Malone stayed healthy they would've easily beat Detroit to win the title too. But Malone was asked to play 40 minutes a game in the playoffs against Garnett and Duncan at age 40 so his body broke down.

The only good thing that came from the Barkley trade was we finally beat the Sonics in the playoffs. As a Rockets fans, I often wonder what would have happened if we kept Big Shot Bob and Sam. Sam was ready to become a starting point guard and probably would have been an All-Star sooner. Horry could have developed into an All-Star as well. Believe it or not there were some that compared him to Scottie Pippen during his years with us. What they should have done was go to that lineup that they used against Orlando in the 95 Finals with Horry at the 4, Mario Elle at the 3, Sam and Clyde in the backcourt, Hakeem at the 5 and run a 4 out 1 in offense. Dream gets double teamed he’d have 3 to 4 shooters capable of knocking down 3s. If teams decided to guard the 3 then that leaves Dream to do dominate in the paint. That would have probably kept the team as a contender for a little bit longer.

When John Stockon hit that 1997 shot in Houston to give the Rockets the Western Conference Championship, that took the actual substance out of Charles Barkley's gut to vie for a title; it was like a stamp of approval that said, "Charles, this is NOT happening." I felt for Barkley because now he has to go through an entire off season, get into shape again, go through training camp and 82 games and hopefully he can do better in the playoffs just to get back to this point. When a gut-shot is hit like that to win, all I think about is all that work and time down the drain. Sad.

Barkley just couldn't come through with little things which shows he was brutish and over-looked the important details of what it takes to make a team lose and make your team win. You can even see that when he talks about basketball on TNT how he discredits Kenny Smith's points and Kenny is pointing out important details of what it takes to win and situations that lead to results but Barkley yells out and overrides his points by saying, 'That's just my opinion.'... then Shaq who is brutish, who only won because he's big and had Phil Jackson and a better supporting cast than Barkley, winds up throwing rings in his face but Shaq couldn't guard the pick-and-roll vs. Utah and would constantly get swept because he wasn't intelligent. So both those guys are not as intelligent as Kenny when it comes to winning basketball; Kenny Smith had the record for most 3's in the Finals, 7, in 1995 and would come through to help his team win when it mattered most.
