Fordlandia: The Suburb Henry Ford Built in the Amazon Rainforest

  • As most of you know, Henry Ford was the automotive genius that founded the Ford motor company. He was a mastermind of production efficiency and pretty much revolutionized the way we build cars on a mass scale. What you probably don't know about Henry, is his failed attempt to build his very own town in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. He called it “Fordlandia”

      *TinLizzie 1927* Yes, Ford's son, Edsel, who was actually pretty sharp, but wasn't a cutthroat like his father. Ford fought his every decision, belittled him, treated him so badly that Edsel developed ulcers and stomach cancer, of which he died in 1943 at the age of 49. Henry Ford was a genius, but a hidebound SOB and always thought he and his ways were right. Fordlandia is a good example of this. Stay safe.

      @@TinLizzie-uc1jw I always like Professor McGonagall's comment about Neville Longbottom's grandmother's expectations: "It’s high time your grandmother learned to be proud of the grandson she’s got, rather than the one she thinks she ought to have---" Henry Ford was such a megalomaniac that Edsel could never come up to his expectations, no matter how hard he tried. As I said, Henry always thought he was right and nobody else's opinion counted. Edsel's son, "The Deuce," had the advantage of having Edsel as a father. Stay safe.

      @@TinLizzie-uc1jw What a sad life Edsel led. I really feel for him. My own mother can find no redeeming value in me, and so I know how hard that is to live with. In fact, in 2012 or 2013 I went to bed one night because I felt queasy and didn't want to throw up. When I woke up the next morning I was still queasy. As I voided my bladder there was no stopping the vomit. I grabbed the (plastic lined) bathroom waste basket and let 'er rip! To my horror I threw up a quart of blood and blood clots-- no food! I told my son to get his clothes on, that I needed to go to the hospital NOW. It was a horrible time and the only reason I survived it is because they resuscitated me when my heart stopped. Then they gave me three units of other people's blood. But, they said it wasn't stress or H. pylori (the typical ulcer causing microbe) that caused it, it was actually ibuprofen that caused my bleeding ulcer. Or at least, it's what they found lying packed together in the hole in my stomach lining when they did the procedure to cauterize the ulcers. Sadly, my entire body is a monument to stress. Ulcers, chronic bronchitis, fibromyalgia, carpal tunnel, restless _limb_ syndrome (I have it in my arms sometimes, too,) irritable bowel syndrome and neuropathy from the knees down are the worst of my illnesses, diseases or conditions. I just hope I'm never exposed to COVID-19 because I don't think I'd survive it.

    So, I'm doing the "Quarantine Catch-up" binge video watching while myself and _all_ Californians are under orders to stay home and self-quarantine until further notice. Strangely enough, the grandfather of my high school BFF was Shanghaied to Fordlandia when my friends' father was very young. It took him two or three years to earn enough money to pay back his passage on a ship to get TO Fordlandia (even though he'd been kidnapped!) and a couple more years to earn enough to pay for his passage BACK to San Francisco! After all, he was dealing with owing the "company store," and in a foreign country where he had virtually no rights, too! The entire family hated anything Ford for generations! Then Ford heavy duty trucks came out with Cummings diesel engines, and being in the trucking industry and owning a fleet of big rig trucks-- all with diesel Cummings engines-- my friends' Dad just couldn't pass up the chance to own a regular pickup with that Cummings diesel engine that rattled the windows and the dishes in the cupboard!

    Tract housing is a style of housing popular in post ww2 rebuilding. A construction company would strip alot of land down to dirt and build the same set of four to six houses repeated throughout the plot. The very definition of suburbia with front lawns and back yards swathed in green green grass and swimming pools.

    One thing you didn't mention about Ford, which I think is significant, and very unlike business practices today... When they were able to streamline the Model A factory, and therefore produce the same cars for much less, Ford passed this savings onto the American people. He stated that everyone had a right to a car... pretty amazing. No one does this today, now if they make it cheaper they then jack up the price ... People had been buying the Model A for $1100, they then dropped the price to around $440.00 - Ford chose not to pocket all this extra profit, and shared the wealth to make America a better place for everyone. This is the main difference between say a Rockefeller ("Competition is bad for business") to a Ford ("All Americans deserve to drive my cars")...

    • @ya8158
      @ya8158 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ford was smarter than just being greedy on the surface he was thinking with a much bigger vision than monopoly people. Cuz if you cut the price In half you’ll sell much more vehicles and his gamble was that he would sell more than double making more profit cuz more people could afford it

    • @ComedorDelrico
      @ComedorDelrico 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      He definitely made more money based on the fact he was selling more cars, tho. Let's say he made $100 for every car he sold at $1100 (I don't know the exact figure, the logic works regardless of what it was). Now he's selling them for $440 and still only making $100/car. But he's selling 10 times as many cars at that affordable price, so he's making 10 times as much money.
      It's nice to think he believed everyone had the "right" to a car but the reality is he wanted more people to be able to afford them because he knew that was good for his bottom line.
      You may want to look a little more deeply into who Henry Ford was before you go around touting him like some kind of hero. His racism and anti-semitism was off the charts, even for that day and age. There's a reason he's a hero to neo-[redacted].

    It's called vertical integration. Ford owned large hardwood forests in No. Michigan to build wooden station wagons and pickup truck beds. He also owned iron mines and steel mills. Tract housing is a group of similar homes built en masse. British rubber planters would have been good people to consult, or French ones. Henry Ford embraced a lot of cranky fads of his times. He was a descendant of Irish protestants, which might clue you in as a Britisher. There is quite a lot of literature about U.S. company towns & their lifestyle. Listen to "Sixteen tons"an old song by Tennesee Ernie Ford (coincidental name ).
