  • The 15th century dances "La Gelosia" and "L'Amoroso" by Domenico da Piacenza. Live, 4K video from our award winning concert: Leonardo da Vinci: a musical Odyssey, San Francisco, performed by the Early Music ensemble Voices of Music. Please consider a donation to help us make these videos! voicesofmusic....
Musicians: Rotem Gilbert, renaissance bagpipes; Shira Kammen, vielle; Malachai Bandy, hurdy gurdy, and Peter Maund, percussion.
The Italian dance-master and composer Piacenza wrote the earliest surviving dance treatise, De arte saltandi et choreas ducendi (The Art of Dancing). Piacenza worked at several courts, including those of the Estes and the Gonzagas. As a young man, Leonardo da Vinci would have known both the dance and the tune. Like the renaissance tourdion, La Gelosia alternates between two tonal registers. The dance was very popular and appears in more than eight different sources. You can see the original manuscript here: www.pbm.com/~li...
This work is here presented for the first time in 4K, ultra high definition video.

Only the second piece is 'La Gelosia'. The first is 'Amoroso' another 15th century Italian dance tune. Gorgeous rendition and incredible sound!!

Utriculus, rhombus, sgabellum, crotala, cymbalum, sistrum, chitarae, lyra, sambuca, cordae obliquae, pandura, syrinx, tibia, tuba, bucina, cornus, etc. They are Roman, Etruscan and Samnite instruments remaining in the Italic tradition and adopted throughout the empire.

What remits me? A medieval fair, perhaps in Venice, Genoa or Syracuse, where exotic and oriental products come from the stalls, the smell of myrrh and incense brought from Egypt that make the air black, the silks of Byzantium and the glass bowls of Persia amid the carpets brought in from Trebizonda and Samarkand. All this amidst the buzz of sellers and buyers.

Most hurdy gurdies you see are more in the baroque style, this is a much earlier model.

I believe they are called symphonias when they are boxed shaped and usually only have 3 strings. The shape you are referring to is the renaissance french style or wheeled vielle. Interestingly it was considered an analog to the viola (bowed vielle in the renaissance).
