Well, I'm french, I've watched all the video (for several days), and I could see how much it was hard for you. Congratulations ! You did it. Amazing to hear the effort you put in each sentence. Bravo !
That’s a brutal challenge dude. But well done for throwing yourself right in. I gotta say though, booking different styles of French speakers was a mistake. I speak fluent French (French French) and some of the Canadian, Cameroon, Senegal accents were even hard for me to understand perfectly! I can only imagine for you trying to learn from scratch. Well done dude!! I’m impressed. Love your content and channel.
The number of accents this guy went through during the challenge made it.... You guessed it: Harder The right idea after learning the basics was to re-enforce their pronunciations I think, which some tutors definitely did although I didn't watch too well. I'm pretty sure he's going to be speaking multiple pronunciations in one sentence tomorrow lol. He clearly dived in head-first though, do I need to say I'm impressed?
Il y a en plus des accents et termes propres aux régions qui compliquent encore plus la compréhension entre français, ça peut mener à des débats interminable alors qu’on connaît tous la réponse (on dit pain au chocolat sauf dans le sud où c’est chocolatine)
I think it would be a mistake if he did it repetitively--but for the first day, it's not too important. It could be a good way to figure out which dialect he prefers before his accent is ingrained through repetition.
My dude, you don't know how much you are helping posting this. I really must learn French for a job but was completely lost on where and how to start. Thank you.
Lexi is a good teacher. She talks very clearly and a little slower for beginners and corrects almost every mistake explaining to Xiaoma. She encourages and doesn't let him get stuck when he doesn't know. Xiaoma is already tired after that many hours and I'm sure he learned more from that teacher. Also, the fact to having a neutral French accent is good for learners. Nothing against other French-speaking countries or accents, I lived in Quebec and in Africa. Even for French, if you learn with a NOrthern or Southern accent of Marseille, it will be a bit more complicated to switch to neutral French
The problem with having so many people teaching you French is that they will tell you slightly different things haha. I had it with my german teachers. I had 3 german teachers and it was hard work
Not true he already has multiple languages under his belt you can’t compare yourself with him or others thats like you comparing yourself to a trained athlete when you may just work out a few times a week . Sure peoples ability will differ thats just a biological fact but this is a relatively small factor. Anyone can do this if they put in the work. The brain is really like a muscle in reality if you don’t push it it won’t grow.
As a western Canadian, I learned French in school but my comprehension isn't great and my speaking is poor. Tried to be better at it via DuoLingo etc but just not having much success. Listening to this video is turning out to be a GREAT way to brush up on my French! I'm playing it in the background while I work, and it is so helpful! I'm going to have to see if there are other videos like this on TH-cam where new French speakers converse with a fluent French speaker. What you find over time especially when one speaks two languages well (I am a Shona native and was fluent in English at 5 years of age) when one language is stronger than the other, the brain will look for words in the stronger language hence the mixing of languages. Olly Richards spoke about this in one of his videos (Spanish and Portuguese) and he remedied this having actual language exchanges or conversations with natives where he forced himself to switch between Spanish and Portuguese until his brain got comfortable and this took a while but his brain managed to adjust. Which is why they always encourage people to get to a high level in a language (C1) before starting another one

@@Cam-wo3mu don't really know, as a native French speaker, I feel like all romance languages are on the same level of difficulty as they share a lot of common features. Maybe Spanish is a tiny bit easier as it's read as it's written.
@@Cam-wo3mu NOT AT ALL, French is for a long time harder than Italian because in the French language the words are more complicated to write and pronounce in certain words some letters are silent at times and others not, there are a LOT of exceptions, there are words that look the same in writing and that don't sound the same, and there are words that look so similar that we can be wrong even we French have problems with our own languages sometimes. In addition there are different words to express a feeling, there are different registers of the language: current, colloquial sustained and the “Verlan” French slangs which consists of inverting the syllables of one word to form another like ( crazy become zy-cray or zee-cray) and he has the language of young people. And Italian is easier because all the letters in the word are pronounced, there are no silent letters and it's just easier to understand.
@@tomjoad1363 it actually is a big deal especially with France vs Quebec, France had been influence by other European country’s and the sound has changed and sounds so much better. Quebec basically still has the 1700-1800 French thats rougher and the accent is harder to understand
@@Pookiebearhungry Sometimes, I explain it to my friends like, "Imagine you just learned BBC English, pass out, and when you wake up, you're in some remote Scottish village and have to ask a nearby elderly farmer for directions home." To be fair, some people have much thicker accents than others - my native language is French, and even I often had trouble understanding my great uncle's combination of thick Gaspé accent and mumbling. The other part is that while non-Québecois French speakers usually understand formal Québec French without too much difficulty, casual Québec French likes to drop a significant number of syllables, and sometimes modify the remaining ones a bit. So you'll start with something they'll teach FSL speakers, like 'Je ne le sais pas,' and then right off the bat the locals will drop 'Je ne le' and then pronounce the remaining 'sais pas' as 'shaypa.'
@@Pookiebearhungry That's incorrect, both have evolved at the same time and academic French is the same as academic French from France. I personally prefer the way Quebec French sounds, but I also prefer American English to British for the same reasons, it sounds less pretentious (no offence😬)

Very helpful way to learn French. Impressed with you being such a quick study. Would be helpful if we, as viewers, could also see the phrases in writing. Thank you!
This is a really difficult challenge, French is indeed a Romance language - and has some similarities with Spanish or Italian - but with a more complex grammar - and spelling words is also a complete nightmare, even for most of French people. Learning French only with oral conversation is really difficult, especially if you choose teachers from various regions of the world. I would not recommend this at all for a beginner: the pronunciation is different and also sometimes the grammar. For example Alexandre started his questions with "As-tu...", which is completely common in oral conversations in Quebec, but a speaker from Europe would rather say "Est-ce que tu as...", even if both are grammatically correct in France ("As-tu" is more frequently used in written standard French). So if you learn French with teachers from different areas, the risk is mixing local grammar and pronunciation rules. So I would not recommend that until you reached at least level B1. For beginners, the best is to stay with teachers from France, Belgium or Switzerland - Belgian and Swiss French are very close to standard French so that wouldn't be an issue - or with teachers from Canada if you're from NA and plan to interact mostly with French Canadian speakers.
@Luke Perret @Luke Perret I agree that French is among the easiest for an English speaker, but so is Swedish (I don't know why you put that among the harder languages?), and German isn't much harder, comparatively speaking. Completely unrelated languages like Japanese, Arabic etc. are much, much harder.
@@DeltaInsanity For Americans the French Canadian is easier since when they speak French they have an American accent. But if you want to go to Europe in a French-speaking country, it would be better to learn standard French otherwise you will have a little trouble making yourself understood.
It bothered me so much that none of the teachers tried to teach Xiaoma the basic sounds of French until Samuel!! It is the most basic stuff to learn, and you'll only be able to communicate if your pronunciation is good enough. He was one of the best ones, correcting the pronunciation and translating new sentences word for word, very didactic. But besides that, awesome livestream!! Really interesting to watch your progress after each class throughout the TWELVE hours hahah French is an incredible language.
Yes I noticed that as well, It was a relief when Samuel came in and brought that up. Wish he had gone through all of the sounds. Not that it really seemed to make a difference for Xiaoma, no offense lol. I am brand new learning French too but I was thinking if he says que as “KAY” instead of “KUH” after being corrected for the 6000th time i’m going to pull my hair out… EDIT: I’m now at the end with the word “famille” and I actually think he may have a learning disability.

As a teacher myself, I think the first tutor was excellent. She met him at his level, didn't overcorrect or overexplain, but managed to cover the basics of pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. It's important not to overteach a beginner, but to dose knowledge carefully according to your student's capacity to truly absorb it. Learning a language is like eating a meal... you don't need to swallow all the steak and potatoes in one mouthful... you can have a little of each until gradually your plate is empty!

First language we learn in most schools here is english obviously, I don't know why so many french students struggle with it, it's a pretty easy one compared to so many others, especially the ones with a different alphabet. Except for english, I know basic Spanish but can understand many situations. I don't know why, it's crazy how we can understand so many things but when it comes to saying them, it's so much harder. I know I'm not fluent in English, I've spent probably ten years learning it, and I know that by the end of highschool my English level was that of my teachers but I still can't consider myself fluent. I don't know, when you listen and observe someone in a language you're good at, but you still discover so many new words. Really, the extent of some people's vocabulary just amazes me. French and Spanish are very similar. It's hard to switch your brain to "french mode" when you're already learning spanish :)

@@Pookiebearhungry
Sometimes, I explain it to my friends like, "Imagine you just learned BBC English, pass out, and when you wake up, you're in some remote Scottish village and have to ask a nearby elderly farmer for directions home." To be fair, some people have much thicker accents than others - my native language is French, and even I often had trouble understanding my great uncle's combination of thick Gaspé accent and mumbling.

He's from NYC and talked a bunch about wanting to order poutine in Montreal, so I'd definitely recommend a teacher from Quebec.
We will all die!
Je suis d'accord avec toi le français est vraiment pas facile
@@DeltaInsanity For Americans the French Canadian is easier since when they speak French they have an American accent. But if you want to go to Europe in a French-speaking country, it would be better to learn standard French otherwise you will have a little trouble making yourself understood.

The worst thing is when I see children from english countries speaking such a good english when it took me years to master it as much as them 😂 I'm starting to learn German too. So, GG for speaking fluently 3 languages !!
I love Elisa, she's the best !!!!
I just watched the very beginning, but i got to say, i'm impressed by how fast he learns sounds. He hears the word once and pronounces it very accurately right away.
Actually, watching (or even just listening) along to these videos is a really great way of learning French. Does anyone know of any other similar videos where someone has perhaps uploaded all their French lessons onto TH-cam? (Yes there are a lot of "how to speak French" tutorials already, but not many with a beginner learning from a more experienced person in a very natural, unstructured, conversational sort of way)
I don't think they have. It would be good if someone did it in slightly more manageable chunks with a speaker of a consistent accent and teaching style. Elisa was my favourite, she taught french in a modern and honest way regarding spoken vs written french.
@@_Shadbolt_ actually since writing this comment I’ve done a bit more research on this. I would highly recommend “language transfer”. It is audio lessons that are taught with a teacher and a student (totally free). If you want something similar but a bit more structured I couldn’t recommend this enough. However, I will say that what I enjoyed about this video was exactly how UNSTRUCTURED it was. Just people chatting and learning french in whatever natural way takes their fancy. I still haven’t found anything exactly like this, however I have had the idea to - if I ever decide to do french lessons on italki myself - record the conversations and then listen back to them like podcasts. I think this will be invaluable as a learning tool.
@@_Shadbolt_ oh and Elisa has her own channel now, in case you didn’t know. It’s called french mornings with Elisa. It’s great.
maybe "learn french with pod 101" chanel
There is a really good one her name is "Francais avec nelly"
Bonjour Xiaoma, je suis français d’origine asiatique et j’espère que tu vas réussir à apprendre le français ( je viens de commencer la vidéo)
This was such a great learning experience to have the full 12 hours! I had no interest in learning French but this is such a unique video I had to follow along. Merci!
You can learn French, it's so helpful, that it will open you so many ways in life. It's your choice but it's a beautiful language even if it looks difficult to learn 😂😅
it's hypnotic to look a fast learner like him, hope you'll put other video in future in which you talk French
Second to last guy was speaking straight facts about our current government in the US
I've been learning French for a couple of days now. It benefits me to watch you are studying it for twelve hours straight.
Watching this man learn more French in 12 hours than I've managed in 30 years 😅
I love Elisa’s voice.
This is so cute to watch when you know how to speak french😄
Literally what I said lmao
Can we talk about how the last guys name was Alexandre Champagne... Thats HIGH tier baller name. I expect this guy at every club in Ibiza with 10+ lovers crewed up... meanwhile im stuck with Timothy. ok mom.
LOL thx dude, I wish 🤣
Lmao underrated comment
Oh that actually is his last name... I thought it was a joke for the video lol.
People will make fun of you actually
@@Siberius- It's a common last name in Québec.
i feel like with yannick you were really putting everything you learned and making good sentences for a conversation
Avec une prof aussi belle qu’Elisa, j’apprends toutes les langues du monde
I really like this type of video! I'm originally from Quebec but my family moved when I was little so I only really learned French (early intermediate level?) as an adult, and this is a great review even for me. You did amazing even after the first hour - awesome job!
If you like challenges, learn finnish. I know, it's said everywhere, that finnish is so difficult, but it would be nice to see how quickly you learn to pronounce. And some phrases. Yeah, there's not so many finnish speaking people around, not even close to chinese, japanese, korean, spanish etc.
But it would be fun to see.
impossible😆
Let him first learn to pronounce ö and y in French, he isn't there yet.
Im Swedish and grew up watching Finnish kid shows every Saturday morning and no language scares me to study like Finnish does because I absorbed absolutely 0 stuff all the years I watched those kid shows :p I do wish Swedes had to learn Finnish in school though to keep Finnish more spoken in the world, for fairness sake since you have to learn Swedish it's only fair if we learn yours too, and because language studies are so beneficial too :) Not to mention I wish I knew more about Finnish culture because the language barrier means I know almost nothing about your culture eventhough we are neighbors (and that I have Finnish ancestry as well and wish I could learn more for that reason too).
It"s not impossible!
Han kan också lära prata lite svenska på 24 timmar.

I understand you as a native 😂
I still can't speak French well after studying 20 years in France. Yes I'm 20
@@user-im5sl6xe7u force 😭
Force à toi bro c'est pas difficile le français pourtant 🤔 après le mieux c'est de partir dans le pays pour apprendre réellement la langue tu verras c'est pas la même langue que à l'école
Me neither, ive been studying for 12 years. Im 15 and canadian.
As a former French teacher, it always blew my mind how most learners hear /u/ instead of /o/ when native speakers speak, although it feels like French O sounds super close to O's in other romance languages... I wonder what we could do to make it sound clearer...
I speak French well and I'm currently learning Chinese, which he speaks fluently. He's struggling with French the same way I'm struggling with Chinese. So I understand the pain.

@Huf P. lol like I'm jealous but imagine being as jealous as this loser
Over 500
Elisa can teach me anyday. 😌
I’ve been watching one of the tutors per day, it’s rather quite interesting to see his evolution whilst also learning some French myself
I'm so here for learning French with you! Actually saves me a lot of hours with a tutor as I think for beginners in a language people usually ask the same things over and over again. I learned Portuguese and Russian on my own now I'm starting French!
Boa sorte meu amigo
