RIP Alex. He brought a party on the fringes of Scottish Politics into a dominant government and missed taking Scotland Independent by the skin of his teeth with a result no would have thought imaginable. Scotland has lost a rampant lion today. Rest in Peace, Alex. Without a doubt the Strongest Leader (& First Minister) Scotland has saw in hundreds of years.
If the Scots want independence I don't fall out with that but, They should find their own way and currency instead of feeding off the back of the rest of the UK. Independence stands for just what it means. The fact that the SNP wants to keep the pound suggest they are secretly not convinced of a financially strong future and sucks of Scottish abuse. That's quite obvious from Samond own words stating he wants the best for Scotland but, at who's expense.
smaller countries have higher prices in the shops and have to balance the books more than bigger countries...???We have dignity, pride and independence...good luck Scotland, vote yes. Ireland is not bust anymore nor is Iceland (incorrect statement) we have turned everything around by ourselves and we will support Scotland.
Rayykz. Many thanks for that. The pound is a UK currency led by the Bank of England. The Bank of England fix all interest rates and other financial arrangements with its being. Alex SALMOND states the Scottish people can be better led by Scottish people and not by others in Westminster who they did not vote for. He rants about the Scottish people being independent and better out than in but, still wants his Monetary system to revolve around Sterling. It doesn't matter who set the currency up, it's a fact the currency is managed by the Bank of England. So, he wants to be divorced from the rest of the UK BUT wants to be led financially by the Bank of England and calls that Independence.
For me these sorts of debates are unsuccessful because neither has a chance to adequately state their case in detail. For the undecided voter, seeing two people trade soundbites and ask each other yes or no questions, or slotting in "gotcha!" moments does not enable any sort of deeper analysis of the issues. It would be better to give each person a good 10 or 15 minutes to state their case, which the other could then rebut or respond to. When it is just a case of one saying "X = Y" and the other saying, "No, it doesn't," how is anyone to know what to believe?
We already have; a devolved parliament (which is getting the power to set income tax pretty soon, I believe), our own law code, our own education system. We plan to keep; the currency (at least, most plans don't include a Scottsish central bank), NATO (so we keep our military obligations for the most part), the EU (and the EC will therefore continue to pull the strings of policy). As far as I can tell we don't stand to really gain anything meaningful from it politically. What we stand to lose on the other hand is immediate and significant; a direct profit from the union to the tune of over a thousand pounds a head a year in public spending over the UK average (and we only raise £500 a head more in tax, oil revenue included), a seat at the G8, a direct part in a very respectable military, established trading deals etc etc. Get informed, do what's best for Scotland, Vote No.
Salmond the Beast... Even back then the pound was the problem.. Zoom forward 7 years and its still a problem.. The SNP will never get what they want. LOL
Two of the biggest titans of the age and just 10 years on they are both gone, shows how fleeting life really is.
Well done Darling
Darling will be remembered as one of the greats in Scottish politics
Honest and engaging in the issues at hand.
Salmond on the other hand🙄

Salmons avoids making decent points by making the crowd laugh at Stirling. Great job.
Bernard Ponsonby did a better job at moderating this debate than Glenn Campbell did with the second one for sure. And Salmond performed terribly here.
darling won even though I don't like him

I'm swaying towards a yes vote to be honest...
This comment was from 2 years ago bud! Haha!
Where can i find the 1st full debate to rewatch?
It was on Dailymotion through which we could see the introduction, the debate and the Q&A session. Now it's not there anymore.
posterity really shows what a pathetic populist salmond was. darling performed well, but in that era people didn't want logic
when did this debate take place?
Season 6b episode 4

Because - he believed the Westminster would act like responsible adults. But suits Scotland since uk currency is nose diving.
