Great video helped alot. If you dont have the backup rom thats ok all you would need is the Ubuntu one and the chrome recovery usb and you would just say you dont have the backup and it will create one for you when reinstalling through the terminal.
Thank you very much..... Just a note.. if you havent made a backup of your previous ChromeOS installation, you can skip the extra step of restoring from the backup media. That will be one less disk but you will then have a clean installation with no previous history.
Hey so I did everything but after rebooting my computer at the end my screen is just perma black, did I just break my computer? The power light is on and my screen flickers for a second but nothing comes up after that I tried force shutting down and holding power and refresh :/

When I installed linux and do this steps - I can choose only 1 way - 6) Restore Stock Firmware (Full) - in terminal. But, when I press "6" - in doesn`t work...I can choose only C-to clear NVRAM. R-reboot. P-to poweroff. Q-to quit... Maybe you have any recommendation to fix it?
Hey I know this is an old video, but I’m trying to do your method but keep getting stuck on the “cd ~; curl -L -O” command. I’ve input it exactly as you have in the video but it tells me the following: “unable to read current firmware; cannot continue. Either add ‘iomem=relaxed’ to your kernel parameters or trying from a Live USB with a more permissive kernel (eg, Ubuntu).” Any ideas? I tried editing the kernel parameters, but that requires me to reboot the system, which resets the parameters.. I tried fully installing Ubuntu but the message still pops up.

When I press 6 to restore the stock firmware it asks me to insert the USB drive and press enter so I do that and then it asks me to type the number of the device that contains the firmware and after i do that I see another message saying "No firmware files found on the USB

I find it better to use the mrchromebox scrip better than coolstar, I had trouble using ubuntu 18.04 because of the new ubuntu upgrades and bad internet connection this day but with patients I restored my chromebook.
Has there been a fix for this yet? I couple people have had issues trying to do the apt install curl, when I press enter it tries to run through the process but has an error that says package ‘curl’ has no installation candidate

Yeah. You could stick with using Linux (Ubuntu or Gallium are my suggestions) on your Chromebook or you can install CloudReady. CloudReady is Google Chrome but distributed by a company called Neverware. I've already uploaded a video about CloudReady, but it won't go live until Wednesday.

It is an option. I never suggest that because most people don't have 2 of the same Chromebook laying around, but yeah, you could do that. Just get your currently working Chromebook to the point where you backup the ROM and then use that to restore both Chromebooks back to stock if you want.

Hello, I did the same steps to return to chrome, I reinstalled the firmware that I had in my memory and so far everything was fine, until when I gave it a restart it sent me the black screen error that it gave you, but when I turned it on again it did not start , it turns on but the screen does not start, what could it be?

okay. did some research on this. Sounds like you might need to try a couple of commands. try this: sudo apt-get clean and then try installing curl. I just restored a Dell Chromebook 11 to stock. I only needed two flash drives. One for the recovery media and a second for Ubuntu. I did not have a ROM backup but I found upon running the script that it would download the appropriate ROM and proceed with the install.
I just did the same, thanks for commenting so I knew it could be done! It tells you to go back and launch that terminal script again to reset the terminal boot flags after installing the chrome os. I did that by just going to chrome setup after installing and putting in my network info. After that screen don't continue with setup and hit CTRL-ALT-F2. That brings up a command prompt. Enter username chronos. Then download and run the same script. Now Go to where it says set boot options GBB flags. Should be numero 2. Then I hit 5 to reset flags to default. Then after reboot you are all set and ready to run through normal chrome os setup.

Really? "Im waiting..."??? Sometimes you might be waiting a LONG time. Also, if you followed my tutorials, you were told MULTIPLE times to make a backup. I was VERY explicit in that. Why did you not make a backup? When you go through the restore process, it will ask you if you have a backup. If you say "no" it might be able to restore a generic backup from their servers, but there are no guarantees about that. Next time you do something like this, I suggest you make backups of everything when you can.
please help ... i got all the way to the last step after the factory firmware reinstalled. after rebooting the chrome os screen with OS verification is off has the error gbb.flags is nonzero which will not allow any of the steps after that to reinstall chrome OS
There's a part in the video shown here: th-cam.com/video/5Ahz3v7hOBQ/w-d-xo.html where it says: "After rebooting, you will need to restore ChromeOS using the CHromeOS recovery media, then re-run this script to reset the Firmware Boot Flags (GBB Flags) to factory default." So you might have to do that to get things to work again. I've actually never encountered this issue, though I've seen the script mention needing to be rerun to reset the flags. I hope this helps a bit.
@@DBTechYT yes thanks I know the video says that, that's where I'm up to in following your instructions. the problem as I see it is that the gbbflags have somehow become set wrong at the restore factory BIOS & reboot point, meaning I can neither get back to the linux environment to run the script again, or continue reinstalling chrome OS. I dont have any idea how it got to his state. I followed your other video originally to put windows on the chromebook, now I'm trying to get it back to factory. The only other solution I can think of is a bootloader program to enable getting back to ubuntu in order to run the script again but at the moment the state of the gbbflags will not allow that either

The download and run commands are run in sequence when you type in: cd ~; curl -L -O coolstar.org/chromebook/setup-firmware.sh && sudo bash setup-firmware.sh Make sure you type that command EXACTLY as shown. Capitalization matters and so do spaces and make sure that you use a ~ after the "cd" and not a -.
"dont work for me :O .... anyone can help me ?" doesn't tell us anything. What happened? What error messages did you get? The more you tell us, the more we can help. Be descriptive and tell us the EXACT error messages you get. Don't paraphrase them. The details are the in the exact error messages.

When you get to the part where it asks if you have a backup of your firmware, you can try telling it "no" and it *might* be able to download one from an online resource.
Hey! I read some of the descriptions of the Windows and Chromebooks Videos and it seems it has not been answered(At least to me) If you are just stuck on the screen with the rabbit from the first video(How to install Windows 10 on Chromebook), Would you have to have the ROM on 1 USB and Then the Image on another, or could you just use the Image to restore the Chromebook. Not the best with tech so thought I could get some help and more info from you.
If you're stuck on the rabbit screen and you want to go back to stock, you basically have to (from my experience) use a Linux distro to run the commands to get the ROM installed back on your Chromebook correctly. I'm about 99% positive you can't just put the ROM USB in and have it go back to stock.

This video IS the instructions on how to get back to stock. Threatening me won't get you anywhere good. You made the decisions that led you hear. I didn't MAKE you do anything. Contact TH-cam if you want. I promise that won't get you anywhere. Watch this video in its entirety and follow along. As long as you made a backup of the ROM, you can get back to stock in just a few minutes.

Then you select the option that says "I don't have a backup" and you hope that the system can find and download one. If that doesn't happen, then you put your favorite version of linux on it and how you have a linux laptop
My dumb*ss thought it would be a good idea to reinstall chromeos with the chromebook recovery utility with a modified firmware and custom OS. I can't open boot menu and I can't flash the chromebook using the chromebook recovery utility. What should I do now??

Hi David , I followed your video and got my Dell Chromebook 11 3180 back to Chrome OS from Chrome OS flex . I would have liked to have kept Flex but when I installed it I had no sound . Now I'm back to Chrome OS it always starts with the warning screen " OS missing or Damaged please insert Recovery USB stick or SD Card" Also in the upper left hand corner there is what looks like part of the screen missing with part of the Terminal showing . Any Ideas would be appreciated . Thank you . By the way I'm not blaming you for any of this , I am learning that each make and model of Chromebook is a little different. Oh , great video by the way .

nice tutorials, but if you did not make a backup of the firmware, stupid me, and trying to restore it, for me it says that mrchrombox dont have stock firmware CYAN, and i can download it, but now it says that download/extracting from recovery image failed. :( please help.
If you didn't make a backup like you were told multiple times and the script isn't able to download one from the internet, you may want to think of something else entirely to do with your chromebook.

It's not a stupid question at all. You SHOULD have backed up your ROM, but you might be able to restore without it. When you get to a part where it asks if you have a backup, select NO and there's a chance that it may be able to download it from the internet.

if u cannot get 3 flash drives u can use 2. By instaling ubuntu instead of running it off a flash drive.

It is an option. I never suggest that because most people don't have 2 of the same Chromebook laying around, but yeah, you could do that. Just get your currently working Chromebook to the point where you backup the ROM and then use that to restore both Chromebooks back to stock if you want.

Hello, I did the same steps to return to chrome, I reinstalled the firmware that I had in my memory and so far everything was fine, until when I gave it a restart it sent me the black screen error that it gave you, but when I turned it on again it did not start , it turns on but the screen does not start, what could it be?

Sounds like you might need to try a couple of commands.
try this:
sudo apt-get clean
and then try installing curl.
If that doesn't work, then try running this:
sudo apt-get update

I just restored a Dell Chromebook 11 to stock. I only needed two flash drives. One for the recovery media and a second for Ubuntu. I did not have a ROM backup but I found upon running the script that it would download the appropriate ROM and proceed with the install.
That may not always be an option. That's why the script tells you to back up your ROM.
I just did the same, thanks for commenting so I knew it could be done! It tells you to go back and launch that terminal script again to reset the terminal boot flags after installing the chrome os.
I did that by just going to chrome setup after installing and putting in my network info.
After that screen don't continue with setup and hit CTRL-ALT-F2.
That brings up a command prompt. Enter username chronos.
Then download and run the same script.
Now Go to where it says set boot options GBB flags. Should be numero 2.
Then I hit 5 to reset flags to default.
Then after reboot you are all set and ready to run through normal chrome os setup.

Really? "Im waiting..."??? Sometimes you might be waiting a LONG time. Also, if you followed my tutorials, you were told MULTIPLE times to make a backup. I was VERY explicit in that. Why did you not make a backup?
When you go through the restore process, it will ask you if you have a backup. If you say "no" it might be able to restore a generic backup from their servers, but there are no guarantees about that.
Next time you do something like this, I suggest you make backups of everything when you can.
please help ... i got all the way to the last step after the factory firmware reinstalled. after rebooting the chrome os screen with OS verification is off has the error gbb.flags is nonzero which will not allow any of the steps after that to reinstall chrome OS
There's a part in the video shown here: th-cam.com/video/5Ahz3v7hOBQ/w-d-xo.html where it says:
"After rebooting, you will need to restore ChromeOS using the CHromeOS recovery media, then re-run this script to reset the Firmware Boot Flags (GBB Flags) to factory default."
So you might have to do that to get things to work again. I've actually never encountered this issue, though I've seen the script mention needing to be rerun to reset the flags. I hope this helps a bit.
@@DBTechYT yes thanks I know the video says that, that's where I'm up to in following your instructions. the problem as I see it is that the gbbflags have somehow become set wrong at the restore factory BIOS & reboot point, meaning I can neither get back to the linux environment to run the script again, or continue reinstalling chrome OS. I dont have any idea how it got to his state. I followed your other video originally to put windows on the chromebook, now I'm trying to get it back to factory. The only other solution I can think of is a bootloader program to enable getting back to ubuntu in order to run the script again but at the moment the state of the gbbflags will not allow that either

The download and run commands are run in sequence when you type in:
cd ~; curl -L -O coolstar.org/chromebook/setup-firmware.sh && sudo bash setup-firmware.sh
Make sure you type that command EXACTLY as shown. Capitalization matters and so do spaces and make sure that you use a ~ after the "cd" and not a -.

Sounds like you may not be connected to the internet, but "'failed to fetch' something" isn't super helpful in troubleshooting.

If you don't have a backup and it can't find one automatically then you're gonna have to find one online and try it

You MIGHT be able to create a Chromebook Restore USB and restore the device that way, but I've never actually done it that way

Then I hope you have a USB backup of your BIOS and a USB drive with chrome recovery on it.

I read some of the descriptions of the Windows and Chromebooks Videos and it seems it has not been answered(At least to me) If you are just stuck on the screen with the rabbit from the first video(How to install Windows 10 on Chromebook), Would you have to have the ROM on 1 USB and Then the Image on another, or could you just use the Image to restore the Chromebook. Not the best with tech so thought I could get some help and more info from you.
If you're stuck on the rabbit screen and you want to go back to stock, you basically have to (from my experience) use a Linux distro to run the commands to get the ROM installed back on your Chromebook correctly. I'm about 99% positive you can't just put the ROM USB in and have it go back to stock.

This video IS the instructions on how to get back to stock. Threatening me won't get you anywhere good. You made the decisions that led you hear. I didn't MAKE you do anything. Contact TH-cam if you want. I promise that won't get you anywhere. Watch this video in its entirety and follow along. As long as you made a backup of the ROM, you can get back to stock in just a few minutes.
Also, you NEED A USB drive with the backed up ROM. You also need a USB drive with a Linux distro on it. There are no ways around that.

Then you select the option that says "I don't have a backup" and you hope that the system can find and download one. If that doesn't happen, then you put your favorite version of linux on it and how you have a linux laptop
My dumb*ss thought it would be a good idea to reinstall chromeos with the chromebook recovery utility with a modified firmware and custom OS. I can't open boot menu and I can't flash the chromebook using the chromebook recovery utility. What should I do now??

Then you didn't listen to the MULTIPLE times you were told to do that. You MIGHT be able to restore, but there are no guarantees.

Hi David , I followed your video and got my Dell Chromebook 11 3180 back to Chrome OS from Chrome OS flex . I would have liked to have kept Flex but when I installed it I had no sound . Now I'm back to Chrome OS it always starts with the warning screen " OS missing or Damaged please insert Recovery USB stick or SD Card" Also in the upper left hand corner there is what looks like part of the screen missing with part of the Terminal showing . Any Ideas would be appreciated . Thank you . By the way I'm not blaming you for any of this , I am learning that each make and model of Chromebook is a little different. Oh , great video by the way .

Then you need to open "Computer Management", go to "Disk Management", find your USB drive, and remove all the partitions on it.
did not work it wont read my usb and when it did it gave me a error and this just dose not work as a script anymore, well for me anyway.

nice tutorials, but if you did not make a backup of the firmware, stupid me, and trying to restore it, for me it says that mrchrombox dont have stock firmware CYAN, and i can download it, but now it says that download/extracting from recovery image failed. :( please help.
If you didn't make a backup like you were told multiple times and the script isn't able to download one from the internet, you may want to think of something else entirely to do with your chromebook.

It's not a stupid question at all. You SHOULD have backed up your ROM, but you might be able to restore without it. When you get to a part where it asks if you have a backup, select NO and there's a chance that it may be able to download it from the internet.
