Useful tip: if you have a (relatively) newer Chromebook without a write-access screw inside, usually disconnecting the battery and plugging in AC power will enable write access. You'll need to do this until the new firmware is installed, then you can reconnect the battery 👍 This worked for me with a HP Chromebook 11A 8G EE, which is now happily running Linux Mint 21 on its ARM64 chipset. The school software actually said it wouldn't run because the OS was 'vintage' LOL. :) I watched this and ordered a new SSD drive for the Acer and it worked perfectly. I followed your steps one by one and took my time. After install, I was able to run updates and it works perfectly. Also, the school software didn't kick me out! I now can use this again with Linux Mint. Thank you for such a great video!

Your walkthrough has got everything. I've now got Mint 21 Xfce running beautifully on my friend's old sunset Chromebook.
@@chiragstech5511 It would have been Mint 21 xfce edition. Xfce is not too demanding for a low-powered processor. The Chromebook eventually fell apart physically and I replaced it with a 2nd hand Lenovo ThinkPad.

Tbf u can install linux on pretty much any laptop and most installers are very similar to windows in most cases mint ik is especially easy to install/use
I turned mine into Bodhi in 2014 and have thought of junking it - but thank you, I'll give it a go. Bodhi is really old and zero support for this config. It's really light and perfect when you want more than a tablet and less than a laptop.
Some laptops have audio issues like hp beats audio laptops. You can use HDAJackRetask to fix this in some cases but search for your model laptop Settings and be careful when doing it, you could mess up your loudspeakers

I followed along (I have the same laptop)exactly right up until you finished downloading the thing we got from going into the code. When I finished downloading it didnt auto reboot so I waited a couple of minutes then decided to go back to the main menu (of the coding part) and clicked the reboot button from there. I then rebooted like you did except when I clicked reboot it showed an error saying failed: verify you have a 64 bit uefi or something like that. Then I click a button code appears then shell appears and above it says if you got here by accident type exit. Then I get put back to the reboot menu. I cant get out of it. I cant hard reset my laptop or anything
@@hsspecialist10 I sold it to friend of mine who has device that can flash micro chips. He desoldered bios chip and flashed it with the device and now to laptop works. Ofcourse he flashed bios that supports linux and windows.
All you need to do is plug in a 64-bit installation disk and it'll run it, doing the installation. You may have to change the boot device by pressing esc on the boot screen.

I have a Lenovo N23 Chromebook. I jut followed these intructions and I'm running Linux Mint Mate on the chromebook now complete with sound. I did open the box and remove the screw which had a sticker over it. A few screens appeared a little different as I went through the process, but overall it was straightforward and easy to follow. I own several computers and have found Linux Mint my go to system. I didn't need a chromebook with Mint but thought I'd like to try this. Had one instance of aloud sound when the video paused on TH-cam but other than that, no glitches. I am now going to try to install it from the usb stick. Thanks for your help.

I have done this conversion. I installed Linux Mint 20.2 mate. I was able to remap volume controls in keyboard shortcuts. But I can’t work out how to create a custom shortcut for brightness controls. Can anyone help?

I installed linux mint deviants edition 5 on my external hdd but I cannot find my ntfs partition on the external and my main ntfs partition on the pc's internal hard drive when I boot with the lmde 5. but it shows me the other linux partitions I have on both internal and external hard drives in the devices section. I also went to the file system section of the lmde 5 I installed and I found an EFI folder which when I opened was showing the content of my internal window xp partition as folders within this same folder. but I cannot find all the ntfs partitions either external or internal to mount. but my lmde 5 is set to automount all devised or drives or partitions whichever you want to call it to list in devices. but not showing. Any help please? one thing I also noticed is I don't have any efi or swap partition created on my external hard drive partitions. but the grub is installed on the external hard drive.
I got to 8:38 but then I didn't know how to get the Linux or Windows software onto the Chromebook. If I pressed reboot it would just restart the process and if I pressed default boot, a lot of text would appear with shell on the bottom, and I would have to type exit only to go back to the same page. It would say if you wound up here by mistake, type exit to go back to the UEFI menu. If I try to boot with the EMC thing, it would say that I would have to verify that something was inside it. There were other options in the boot manager but since I suck with computers I had no clue what they mean. I never got the screen on 8:54.
My only question is, what can I use to create the Bootable USB while using this Chromebook? I have not been able to find any way to create the USB using my Chromebook.
The sad part of CTL chromebooks is instead of a write protect screw, it needs the battery to be disconnected. This means that it has to be unplugged every time one wants to do anything serious with it. Very inconvienient.

I had the same chromebook as you, or so I thought. It looked exactly the same but when I opened it up to remove the screw it was completely different. I’m not sure if I got lucky or it wasn’t necessary with my chrome book, but I took out the screw I thought was correct and got the boot loader on it just fine. Been running Cinnamon on it for about 2 weeks and it’s been great at work. My only complaint is my sound doesn’t work. I have to run it through a Bluetooth speaker. Since I only do work on it the sound isn’t important.
I tried with a HP 14 Chromebook that I bought a month ago. As a Chromebook it was a steaming pile of dog poo. I removed the write-protect screw and had a go at putting Raspbian then Mint on it and failed miserably. It's looking for a secure boot signature file and I have no way of getting into the bios to turn that off.
Will this work on a CTL type Chromebook? I have gotten terminal to work through UserLand but I have not been able to get the actual mint distro to boot and load.

Hey, so whenever I am done with installing linux mint on my old chromebook, it says to remove the installation medium and press enter. I do the steps, and the chromebook boots into the white screen that shows up whenever you boot it from developer mode. I hit ctrl-l, and boot through the usb, and it makes me redo the linux mint install. How do I make it automatically boot into linux mint, and even better not make me redo the installation proccess?

Can I find this in print somewhere? I've just found an Acer c740 CP4e and I want to do the same with Elementary OS. I'm very nearsighted, and some of this is difficult to make out. Are you able to use a keybind for brightness? I'm finding it difficult to bind for brightness because xbacklight or ybacklight require sudo to adjust the brightness level.

Are you able to use a keybind for brightness? I'm finding it difficult to bind for brightness because xbacklight or ybacklight require sudo to adjust the brightness level.

Do you need to remove that writeprotect screw or can you do that in software?
you need to remove it
For soft WP you can disable it without unscrewing it but its just easier to unscrew it
