The installation process worked like a charm on my N22. Thank you. Only thing I'd add is I had a problem with going into developer mode. The previous owner perhaps (I bought used) or someone had decided to disable devmode. To solve this, I had to open the chromebook up and take out the write-protect screw/sticker, and then after putting it all together again, I had to factory reset my chromebook to get rid of the "you're not allowed to go into developer mode" issue. After doing this, it went into dev mode and the rest worked like a charm. edit: After some more tinkering, came to find that audio simply wouldn't work despite hours of troubleshooting, and the trackpad felt terrible. I put GalliumOS on it instead and it runs beautifully. I actually used your gallium tutorial for that part, so it's not meant as a critique towards you or anything, just for others who might find themselves in a similar situation. On N22 models at least, Ubuntu's kinda iffy, but gallium is great. Thanks again for all the great guides. Cheers!
I am so glad that I found this video, I just recently switched my laptop over to linux mint. I have been really happy with it. But I have an old chromebook that I got off amazon while I was waiting for a new charger for my current laptop just kicking around and thought that maybe I could get it to work with it and thanks to your video I now have a linux mint HP Chromebook

Hi David, now runner ubuntu on my Acer C720P. Now trying to install ubuntu on a Dell chromebook 13.Can't get pass cd;bash ˂(curl johnlewis.ie/flash_cb_fw.sh)
I've done this entire set up more than 5 times and I still cannot get it to boot up properly without having to press CTRL + L . Appreciate if you make a video talking about how to fix this.
Yep. That happens. Try this method if your Chromebook is compatible: th-cam.com/video/Zdu_rbVi9-Q/w-d-xo.html I know it describes how to install Windows 10, but you just need to watch through unlocking the BIOS. When it gets to the part about installing Windows 10, just put in your Ubuntu USB stick. You can check your Chromebook's compatibility here: coolstar.org/chromebook/windows-install.html (Again, ignore that it says Windows)
OMG. This is so timely with all the discussion regarding the eventual expiration of support for all Chromebooks after 5-6 years. This provides the option of turning a defunct CB into a Linuxbox, which was the primary reason I got a CB in the first place. (I am done with MS & Apple.) The only remaining question I would have would be: "Is it possible to provide access to Android Apps after the conversion?" If so, how? That would restore most of the previous functionality to the converted CB, since I don't really use strictly Chrome Apps. (It would also be nice to have other Linux distros available, besides only Ubuntu.) Thank you.
My word I don't believe you could have made this any easier! I followed your instructions paused when needed looked in the description to get the spacing and phrasing that was needed to get things rolling properly and boom if I could take a picture I would! Thank you for taking the time to get this working I just did a similar process on an old windows 7 laptop and it wasnt too terrible but I had no idea how to modify the chromebook. Is there a way to get the chromebook to automatically startup into unbuntu without pressing ctrl + L, esc, 1, enter? My son will be using this so I wanted to make it as easy as possible so if this is the easiest than I'm good with that! Thank you very much!
Thanks for your comment! I'm glad you were able to get it installed. I agree that the CTRL+L and all that is annoying. You might look at this video to see if your Chromebook is compatible: th-cam.com/video/MK8-cBJw6wg/w-d-xo.html
I can confirm this is working on my Chromebook Acer c720. I ran into this problem where after the installation there would be a boot error and the boot menu. I reinstall it leaving the flash drive in my pc during the restart after it installed everything is working fine right now. I was never able to get ubuntu to work but I ended using Manjaro XFCE 19.0.1. Also if you're wondering I used BalenaEtcher to put the iso on my flash drive. Thank you so much for the video it was really helpful!
Excellent tutorial. Have you done any back to back performance comparisons between Chrome OS and Ubuntu 18.04? I run 18.04 on a couple of other machines but wonder whether it will be any better on my Toshiba Chromebook?
I haven't done any performance testing. I can tell you that OSes like GalliumOS actually run a little better than Ubuntu because it was built for ChromeOS devices.
I should’ve watched the whole vid lol now I have to restore my chromebook and restart the whole process I didn’t know I could just press crtl L and boot back to Ubuntu ......
Finally a guide containing enough information. I didn't follow it exactly and couldnt get it to work until I made chrome os rootfs RW. But it did work so thanks

Hi David. Wonderful tutorial & super easy to follow. Thanks for uploading the new updated tutorial. I got Chromebook Pixel, 16GB RAM (2015) and I had installed ubuntu last year but I ran into lot of issues so finally today I was going to restore the Chromebook to fresh ChromeOS install (actually did) but found your old tutorial and saw your comment that you just uploaded this video yesterday. All right. So Chromebook Pixel 2015 got Intel Core i7 BROADWELL chipset and I followed option 1 (RW_LEGACY) successfully without bricking anything. Rest everything was super easy to follow. Touchscreen, trackpad , camera, bluetooth, keyboard lights everything works fine, except no sound & keyboard shortcut keys of course don't work. Sounds like you've missed a step somewhere. Is the OS verification screen showing up before you press ctrl+l? Are you seeing a screen that says "Press escape for boot menu"? Are you seeing the screens shown in the video at 9:09 and 9:12? If you don't see those screens, then you've missed something. You can't just go pressing keys without being prompted by the system and expect to have the desired results. Also, why would you respond to someone else's comment instead of just starting your own thread?

Thank you David for the excellent tutorial! I have Ubuntu running, but I was wondering if you had a problem with the audio. I can’t get the audio to work for anything. Do you know what may be the problem or how to fix this?
Be sure to check that your system is set to use the right audio device. If you're on the right audio device, then it's probably a driver issue. Because there are so many different Chromebooks out there that use different audio hardware, the default drivers might not work and you'll probably have to see about finding drivers in forums if you can't find them when running updates.
My oldest CB just went EOL. I'm not going to bother with Google decisions as my blood pressure will just needlessly go up. I just wanted to thank you for sharing your knowledge. Whether I get a successful update to a linux distro or not, thank you. I'll keep working at it seeing that I have another chromebook and this oldest one will not update. It just seems such a waste for good hardware to die needlessly. Take care.

Good night, greetings friend, I want to ask you how I can get a equipe "Dell Chromebook Mini-Laptop" to return to Developer mode so I can configure the steps in the factory operating system of the Chromebook Mini, because the command to activate the appearance of the letters on the screen does not work for me, with the (Cmd = Esc + Update Arrow Button + Enter) and then I also cannot give it (Cmd = Ctrl + D), the black screen appears and then it falls to the Windows-10pro operating system. Without allowing me to configure the BIOS, so that the Chromebook is formatted as from the factory. What option can you give me to solve this problem?.
I am using your directions currently. I am installing Linux Mint Mate edition, but I may switch to a different distro if it is taking up too much space or resources (my chrome book only has 16gb of ssd space and is not upgradable and has 2gb ram non-upgradeable if I remember correctly). I did have to change one command, the dev boot legacy is not correct for my chromebook, it is dev_boot_altfw=1.
No. Apparently this isn't a good fit for you. You keep asking questions that have already been asked. Have you even bothered to make sure your device is supported?
If I may make a suggestion my friend, although the video 4 years old and is quite interesting and informative, I really fail to see the need for the background noise, that is very loud, very interfering, makes it very hard to follow and concentrate, I mean we don't really need music do we? Can't we work in total silence, if people get bored without listening to some noise for 15 minutes then, that means they have a problem they need to sort out. It beats the purpose of this informative video, as I said, it is just a suggestion, an instructive criticism if you will. Thanks for the video.
If you see "This video is unavailable on this device," it's because this video got hit with copyright and then the copyright was removed and now it doesn't appear to play. Here's the same video without the copyright issues: th-cam.com/video/Y3c4VA4HUWc/w-d-xo.html

Cheers!
I'm glad that the videos helped!! :)
Wow, thanks for the tutorial, it worked great for my Dell Chromebook and it now runs Linux mint 19.1 and it is super fast and stable.
Awesome! Glad you got it going
Adam Frangione now is storage on it?
I probably won't do any mods to my chromebook until the end of life for updates, but this is an awesome tutorial.
Thanks for watching!
Thank's David, I fixed the problem. And everything is running smooth like butter!! Great tutorial !
Wonderful! I'm really glad it worked for you. Will you please tell me the model of your Chromebook so I can start putting together a list of devices it works on?
Acer C720P
Okay cool. So very similar to mine :) Thanks for the info!
Hi David, now runner ubuntu on my Acer C720P. Now trying to install ubuntu on a Dell chromebook 13.Can't get pass cd;bash ˂(curl johnlewis.ie/flash_cb_fw.sh)
@Rafael Romero "can't get pass" doesn't tell me anything. What errors are you running into? Like, exactly what is happening?
Thank you! Works on my Acer C720 with Ubuntu 19.04! You can type "help" and just press "enter" after the graphical error boot message
I'm glad it worked for you!
I've done this entire set up more than 5 times and I still cannot get it to boot up properly without having to press CTRL + L . Appreciate if you make a video talking about how to fix this.
Yep. That happens. Try this method if your Chromebook is compatible: th-cam.com/video/Zdu_rbVi9-Q/w-d-xo.html
I know it describes how to install Windows 10, but you just need to watch through unlocking the BIOS. When it gets to the part about installing Windows 10, just put in your Ubuntu USB stick. You can check your Chromebook's compatibility here:
coolstar.org/chromebook/windows-install.html
(Again, ignore that it says Windows)
I've made multiple videos about installing different operating systems on Chromebooks besides just Ubuntu
Do i just plug in the usb stick without anything on it
Did you miss the entire part where I show how to create a bootable USB?
@@DBTechYT I did not see it can you send a time stamp for me thanks!
I made the video and put out all the information. Can't you just watch the video from beginning to end?
@@DBTechYT i litterally can not find it i have watched please link a timestamp
@@DBTechYTI’ve watched the video twice without skipping and you don’t mention creating a usb stick until you plug it into the laptop
Honestly I don't entirely remember what program I used, but I'm pretty sure I used Win32 Disk Imager to create the USB.
Well at least it worked plus Manjaro is a big distro so I'm not too worried.
Awesome!

Amazing! This worked perfectly on Thinkpad 11e installing Lubuntu. Thanks!
Brilliant. Just finished installing on my ACER Chromebook CB3-111 and had no issues whatsoever. Thanks a ton!
Great to hear!
I should’ve watched the whole vid lol now I have to restore my chromebook and restart the whole process I didn’t know I could just press crtl L and boot back to Ubuntu ......
Same lol
But now I think I’m just gonna go with windows
Finally a guide containing enough information. I didn't follow it exactly and couldnt get it to work until I made chrome os rootfs RW. But it did work so thanks
Thanks man, followed your steps and it worked great!
Awesome!
Since no more updates will be available for my Samsung Chromebook as it will no longer be supported (the message said to upgrade to a newer devive), this video is exactly what I need. I just hope I can accomplish the install successfully. Much better than turning it into a door stop. THANKS!
I've updated the ubuntu 18.04 and made sure all the settings are fine. So i tried to see if ubuntu is recognizing the sound card with sudo aplay -l

Both speakers and headphone won't work. Hey other than sound this is best thing I've accomplished this whole year, lol. I wasn't using chromebook anymore because of all the issues. thanks again. Liked your video and Subscribed
Thanks for the in-depth information about your setup! Have you tried running all the system updates?
I only ask because I had a few things not work quite right until I ran the updates on the system.
Yes it's after the update. Sound was actually one of the previous issues from last unsuccessful attempts to install Ubuntu along with 10 other issues. This time it's 99% up and running just the sound.
Weird. I'll see what I can find and I'll update you if I find anything. Be sure to comment here to let everyone know if you get it figured out :)
Weird thought: have you tried Bluetooth speakers or headphones?
Thank you very much for the video. I have had a Chromebook that I've been attempting to install Linux on and had nothing but trouble so I want to thank you for the assistance hopefully my install will work also.
When i open my chromebook do i always have to use ctrl L at the OS verification to boot to the hard disk or is there a way for my chromebook to automaticaly boot into Ubuntu whenever you open it up
That's what I'm wondering too!

Prior to finding this vid, feels like google has me going through several military checkpoints to go next door to the neighbors house
@Mr ChromeBox at the "Power on the Chromebook and press Ctrl + L to get to the BIOS screen." part it just makes a beeping noise what does that mean
It means you do not have sealbios installed your going to have to go to mrchromeboxs website to install that.

Ubuntu looks pretty good, great tutorial David!
Thanks!! I'm pretty happy with this video and it's a much needed follow up to another video I made on a VERY similar topic. :)
hello David can you help me up please i have HP Chromebook and i wanna install Linux, i just fallow all the step in your tutorial but when i type ~$ sudo poweroff
then the computer goes off but then i plug my USB bootable then switch on when its on i press ctrl+l then esc its still sending me on the chrome os it doesnt allow me to cellect boot device. :(((
Sounds like you've missed a step somewhere.
Also, why would you respond to someone else's comment instead of just starting your own thread?
i'm sorry of commenting of someone is comment!,
no im missing those step from the video at 9:10 to 9:25 the black screen with asking me to choose the booting menu
Thaks David for your time!, work perfect!

can you do this verson and keep chrome os
No. You will lose ChromeOS if you do this, but you can change back to ChromeOS with a Chromebook Recovery USB
When ever I try to boot off of my usb it reads it but just pops up the message "An operating system wasn't found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain and operating system."
how to install chrome os after you have done this?
Plug in a chromebook recovery USB and reboot
Thank you so much!
My old acer chromebook stopped receiving updates, now I can use an up to date browser!

After i do the cd;bash it asks for a password.

No. This removes Android and installs Linux
@@DBTechYT Would you recommend doing this?
I am using your directions currently. I am installing Linux Mint Mate edition, but I may switch to a different distro if it is taking up too much space or resources (my chrome book only has 16gb of ssd space and is not upgradable and has 2gb ram non-upgradeable if I remember correctly). I did have to change one command, the dev boot legacy is not correct for my chromebook, it is dev_boot_altfw=1.
Same here.
