Deck Repair and Restoration | How to Refinish Decking

  • This 30+ year old deck was in need of a lot of repairs from rot, water damage, and a peeling paint finish. I'll show you how I revamped the entire design, built a new deck step, and refinished the deck with a solid stain applied using a Wagner airless sprayer.

      Not going to lie, it's very that I'll actually sit through an entire video for something like this, but between your honesty, and the fact that you go the extra mile to do the little things to ensure a clean, finished product, it was enjoyable to watch you work and do things properly. Thanks for sharing some of your little world on the water...I hope you get years of enjoyment out of it!

    Latest news I heard is it does not matter if the grain is inverted. Best advice I have heard is use good fasteners and it should be good. The theory is still controversial, bu my deck is about 30 years old, and the boards still work. My thought is just tightening them good and make sure the water drains off. Good Work and good luck.

    First off, great job. The repairs came out nice and the finish looks great. That Wagner sprayer seems to be the right choice for a project like that. It is concerning though that the deck was in such rough shape. I know those are close to the ground, but proper french draining underneath and adding some lattice or fenched vent holes in the correct spots in the deck skirt should also the deck board slats to do what they do best, allow the underside of the deck to stay dry.
    Anyway, again, great fixes! Thanks for sharing.

    I replaced some stairs to a front porch with pressure treated lumber and, like you, I put the best looking face up. Many years later the boards with the 'cupping' up have started to pool water in them and the stain we put on them is either flaking off or the boards are growing algae. So, you'll have to see if this causes maintenance issues for you down the road. It certainly has for me.

    I renewed my old deck several years ago. I was able to flip most of my old boards over because the bottoms still looked great. Which means they will cup and hold some water cutting some life from them. The way I look at it they were free. Keep up with staining them regularly and they should last quite a long while.

    When I rented that type of sander years ago, the called it a "Flat Plate Sander". Whether that was the rental companies term or a term for that style, I have no idea. The cup of the boards matters but shouldn't be an issue as long as you keep up the finish and teh wood doesn't have a chance to absorb moisture.

  • @timmoen4589
    @timmoen4589 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I've never paid much attention to crowning deck boards and have always gone with best-looking side up. IF I crown them I like the crown up. I find that when the crown is down they can cup and hold water, crown down and they'll "dome" which lets water run off better.

  • @user-xu4ng5ho8x
    @user-xu4ng5ho8x 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Wow! What a difference it makes removing that old rail! It really opens up the deck allowing for a beautiful view of the lake. Our deck is 15 years old and I have deck boards cupped up and down. While building the deck I had no Idea about cupping so I just did like you did and put them pretty side up. My boards are treated and I have no rot at all. Not bad considering here in south Louisiana we average almost 60 inches of rain a year so I wouldnt worry about it. Maybe just be careful if water freezes on the cupped up boards in Winter. Thats not an issue here the only ice we see here is in our adult beverages! lol I love the long window above the deck door did you install it? If you did is it in one of the videos? Awesome job! 🍻

    The up-cupping : not a huge deal. You my well never notice it. As for waiting to stain PT wood - I’d ask a couple professional deck builders on that. I see your using a moisture meter, but I’m not sure that will tell you the entire story of what you need to know for staining.
