Beastmaster feels like a proof-of-concept rather than a Job. Like, if you just described it to me its mechanic sounds pretty cool for a JRPG character, but when you actually play it it just becomes a weaker Blue Mage with extra obnoxious steps.
I wonder, now that Beastmaster is confirmed to come to FFXIV, how good is it going to be or will it be far worse Blue Mage? Honestly, it is funny how there are two classes, Ninja and Beastmaster, that are worse versions of other classes, Samurai and Blue Mage, respectively. At least Ninja is fleshed out enough to have one unique thing. Very literally, Beastmaster exists to get the last few moves of Blue Mage and that’s it.
@@iantaakalla8180 it might be similar to how it was handled in Octopath Traveler 2. You can capture up to 6 monsters and use them however many times you want, but they have MP costs and if you want to capture a different enemy, you need to release something you already caught. It even had a limit break in which you could summon multiple monsters if you had the MP for it, and if you played your cards right, it could straight up win boss fights in 1 or 2 turns.
@@iantaakalla8180 I see two ways they could go about it: A: Return of the pet class. Basically akin to how Summoners used to work and much like WoW hunters. B: Become the beast. Like the Morpher in FFTA, which was closely tied to the Beastmaster in that game (and basically the only point of capturing beasts with them in the first place) Either way, collecting a large variety of beasts will likely be central to the class much like with Blue Mage spells. As for Ninja, I'd say he's more like a better Thief really. They're both speedy, have similar weapon options, both have a dedicated Flee command and a support skill to manipulate encounters in their favor.

I been watching and rewatching the FFV and Dark Souls videos the last couple weeks. I been stuck in the hospital for the last 3 weeks. Watching your vids have been keeping me sane. Thanks man!
I think making beastmasters into a type of blue mage would work. As if you catch a monster once, you release it, and then can "recharge" this monster by using a tent Or you can make monsters use up an item, but that would basically turn them into a Catmancer from Bravely Second, lol
I like the idea of Beastmasters being allowed to capture multiples of monsters to build up spell uses as seen in earlier FF titles. Say, if you catch 3 Grizzlies, you have 3 uses of Grizzly available, but are also able to catch other monsters for other spells. That way, you still keep them capture dependent to keep the job's flavor into the endgame but make them actually able to do things beyond a single use each battle. Granted, some abilities might need to be tweaked to account for crazy people catching 99 of a creature, but FF5 already plays fast and loose with how broken some things are. At the very least, the dedium of capture would then be rewarded with more than the current single use one trick pony.
I love how every improvement you can make to Beastmaster has been made in other jobs here or in Bravely Default, meaning Beastmaster was screwed unless Blue Mages were not introduced in FF5.

Beastmaster sole purpose is to dispatch enemies weak to Whips, and to help Blue Mages to learn their spells, maybe can be used to stop an enemy from attacking too and open it to be stealed, but other than that is hard to be one. Most of the time I only use one, learn his abilites and swap to another job that makes good use of them, even if that means I dont get to use the Kornago thing, always felt odd to get it in first place. And dont worry about Geomancer, he may be weak first but his spells hit strong once you start to level up.
Geomancer is one of those classes where if you level up too much, geomancy tends to end up trying to do KO moves (that will never hit heavy enemies), as the table is level dependent.
@@lordofhyphens Yes that's true, the table for geomancy spells becomes a roulette of Instant KO spells on higher levels, which is good for random enemies but not great for bosses.
Beastmaster is one of the most unique jobs in the game, but it's only really good if your other jobs stink because it's slow. Still, I find it pretty fun if you have that Catch knowledge. Sadly, PR has no Paralysis animation so the whips that do it at a 50% rate are a bit mysterious to the player. Here are some other good/useful catches and tips for people using the job in their playthroughs: -Undead Husk does Break on release, good for instant-killing Ifrit although it's a long backtrack to get it. -Page 32 does Banish on release, good for instant-killing Byblos although it can miss so you might have to retry a few times. Luckily there is a save point right before Byblos. -Bandersnatch does Blaster on release, which is a coinflip chance to instant-kill any non-heavy boss like Chimera Brain. Can be caught outside Tule. -Sand Bears are referred to as Bearaga by the community, glad you found them and used them extensively. -Beastmaster loses the player a lot of money which is annoying, having to buy the gourd and not selling the hypno crown/coronet, which is the best sell in the game :( This item ups your Control chance from 40% to 75%. -Ship Gilgamesh can be instant-killed with an Aquathorn, also skipping Enkidu. -Crystal guardians in Moore Forest are rough, but I like to catch the Sand Crawl from the moogle desert and reset until Maelstrom hits at least two of them for a couple easy kills at the start of the fight. Carrying more of them with this party would work well. -It's quite easy to catch magic dragons next to the last save point in Exdeath's Castle, you can find them on the adjacent 'skull floor tiles' room. Release 4 Flame attacks ftw or save a couple for Melusine which they can basically defeat with 2 releases since she starts weak to fire. There is a pyramid Catch that does the same thing, but it's tricky and annoying to get. -Omniscient is a big Beastmaster exploit, exclusive to PR: You can release two Zuus to remove all but 1 of his HP (weak to wind and only doesn't completely die due to rounding of dmg), and in this version he doesn't reset from the releases! A single whip hit afterwards or reflecting one of his spells finishes the fight. -Nice to see the Beastkiller whip doing some good work late-game, unfortunately there's no fun way to get the Dragon Whip. Opening Shinryu's chest over and over, swinging the thief knife, and running away before tidal wave will eventually get it if you care. At least each attempt is over very quickly. -Twin Tania's weak form can be instant-killed by a lot of things, probably the easiest way is catching an Orucat in the void. -TED is a pain, but at least on PR whips do some bonus damage and never miss because the tree is an Aerial-type enemy. I suspect the White Hole chance in the script was changed from 1/3 to 1/2 or even 2/3 on PR. -I do enjoy 4x 9999 breath wing dmg to all living parts of NED, there are other things you can do with Beastmasters in the fight but those things are less reliable. You could have finished at a lower level, but that's PR boost settings for you :/ GG on the clutch win Krile!
Almagest had NO RIGHT being as weak as it is in our hands. It's my favorite spell, i love holy elemental, and this is what happens?! It's almost as useless as Giga Flare. Why do I catch an endgame enemy just to do a couple hundred all-cast damage?! Disgusting!
That was a lot better than I expected. But, yeah, you need a guide to get any use out of them, even with an otherwise balanced party. Blue Mage, Beast Master, and Chemists are absolutely guide classes, leading me to usually skip them on principal, despite the guides being readily available these days.
Beastmaster, or Guide Dang It: The Game Heck of a vid, though. Fun fact: in the GBA version you can also bring the Elf Toad from World 1 to get the Kornago Gourd. And if you miss the Kornago in World 2, you can catch an Elf Toad in the tower with Gogo later and get it. I haven't made it far enough in the PR to test it there yet though
Im sure youll be tired of this game by the end of all the play throughs, but after everything itd be cool to see- 1. A run where you get to play your favorite classes and play normally 2. A run where your party classes are randomized after every major storyline boss
Have you played Legend Of Dragoon yet BacklogBuster? Id love to watch you play through that game Wonder what youd say about the addition mechanic @backlogbuster
@@BacklogBuster😢 you hate addition system…. That’s ok I loved it after playing a bunch of Pokémon and final fantasy I thought it was a lot of fun and added more skill to the game where in the final fantasy kinda game genre I’m used to having 0 skill expression and just strategy
59:07 Actually that would be Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. They were pretty much required if you wanted to use Blue Mage or the Morpher class but other than that they weren't all that good considering you didn't really fight monsters that much. You could also control a monster and make it break the law and get sent to jail which is hilarious. They were nerfed into the ground in the sequel due to the massive changes in mechanics.
As a huge Blue Mage fan, I've used Control way more than I'd like, but even though I like Beastmaster conceptually, I've never even thought of using the class beyond getting Control on a Ninja. Much like Blue Mage, the implementation in FF5 is just way too guide dependent. I'd have loved it if later releases bothered to add Beastmaster monster effects to the Bestiary for easy access. Sadly, we didn't get that even in the pixel remaster, so the class is doomed to be incredibly tedious. It was fun seeing so many monster effects in this video though, I think the run is worth a watch for that.
Beast masters are also insanely broken in bravely default 2 (it's basically a final fantasy game with the serial numbers filled off made by square and everything) since not only can they hold more than one at a time they get an abillity that gives them stat boosts from the amount they hold which can reach utterly ridiculous levels.
I'm looking forward to Beastmaster coming to FFXIV, partly out of morbid curiosity of how it'll work and partly because I already enjoy Blue Mage in that game.
Pretty funny that Whips end up a far better weapon typs than some other weapon types meant for more melee-oriented classes and that Beastmaster involves more math than _FFT_ Calculator.
Shinryu has dragon whisker as a rare steal if you wanted to try that hell. Considering how you were trying to farm stingray I guess you are up for something like that though lol.
@@BacklogBusterI do wonder if you can just hack in the Jobs around the start on GBA and do a run with that but I know it’s probably not ideal or the jobs break so much of the game’s challenge?
BeastMaster is so boring unfortunately, it has interesting mechanics But his main weapon, the whip, is almost non-existent and with such bad stats it is a job with potential without fulfillment. What they could have done is improve their attack to better take advantage of their attack on the back row and be able to capture more than one monster at a time IMO
The fact that better Beastmaster is either Blue Mage or Summoner basically means Beastmaster is not only useless, but redundant across two classes. I wonder how bad Beastmaster is going to be in FFXIV?
@@BacklogBuster Sorry, my bad then. I saw another guy ask for the same thing on another video and got that response a few weeks from someone, I took that for granted.

Thief is just basic attacking with knives while normal and mine are other weapons (although does mime lose attack, but they can just rod smash), white mage will be a little tough till holy, chemist will be interesting, geo might be tough while summoner should be a breeze.
1. "Pure" Mime is rough because they don't learn other classes' abilities, so they're just another Freelancer. 2. Mime is obtainable very very late in the game, there's no reason to do single class challenge run of them.

Here are some other good/useful catches and tips for people using the job in their playthroughs:
-Undead Husk does Break on release, good for instant-killing Ifrit although it's a long backtrack to get it.
Disgusting!
I believe Release uses the monster's stats for damage, so Almagest from a weak monster will deal much smaller damage.
@sertiana2512 Fair I figured as much, but it should've been learnable through a control - blue magic learn strategy. But then we get that.
Oh hey the class i didn't use because i didn't want a guide for the whole thing
Half of the FF5 jobs require a guide to learn how their gimmicks work. But Beastmaster is definitely the worst offender.
That was a lot better than I expected. But, yeah, you need a guide to get any use out of them, even with an otherwise balanced party. Blue Mage, Beast Master, and Chemists are absolutely guide classes, leading me to usually skip them on principal, despite the guides being readily available these days.
The saddest thing about watching this was knowing a page 34 can one shot biblos with a banish release. 😢
Krile solo challenge nice
this job's genes made it into H'aanit capture and Beastmaster (BD2)
This class got such a unbelivable glowup in Bravely default 2, it's outright just broken.
Beastmaster, or Guide Dang It: The Game
Heck of a vid, though.
I like that series, have a great Day and Success.
I guess WoFF did beast master justice cuz you are the beast master
Hypno crown raises the success of Beastmaster's control ability from 40% to 75%.
Skip....No!
We always visit Zok!
Ikd. I always stay because of Lenna getting poisoned
Not the sharpest tool in a shed she is. But her heart is in the right place
@@nolanstrife7350 I'm confident she'll dodge it one day.
12:40 BEARAGA as the FF5 runners are known to say.
Im sure youll be tired of this game by the end of all the play throughs, but after everything itd be cool to see-
1. A run where you get to play your favorite classes and play normally
2. A run where your party classes are randomized after every major storyline boss
No thanks.
I think FFX-2 had Trainer dressphere which was basically this. I never got it in my only playthrough though so no idea
Nope, Trainer is just /petaction. Other RPG that does this, for example, is Hunter jobs from Octopath Traveler games
Al-Muh-Jest... Jest as in Jester. Love your videos! 🤣😋
Anyone else notice how Xezat always spawns in the wrong spot in the ending sequence then he corrects himself? Man I love submarines
I wanna see how you’ll pronounce Zok next !! 😅
The way I acquired omniscient's gourd was 1 character with blue and time magic and another with steal and mix.
Have you played Legend Of Dragoon yet BacklogBuster?
Id love to watch you play through that game
Wonder what youd say about the addition mechanic
@backlogbuster

@@BacklogBuster😢 you hate addition system….
That’s ok I loved it after playing a bunch of Pokémon and final fantasy I thought it was a lot of fun and added more skill to the game where in the final fantasy kinda game genre I’m used to having 0 skill expression and just strategy
Da Bears are who we thought they were!
Beast Master shows up in bravely default 2. Its still a pain but if you grind it out it lets you have insane stats
In North America maybe, but FF11 predates FFTA by like 6 months or something in the original Japanese release.
@@BacklogBusterAh. Good to know.
I'll be checking this video out tonight. Surprised it's a hour long
Pretty funny that Whips end up a far better weapon typs than some other weapon types meant for more melee-oriented classes and that Beastmaster involves more math than _FFT_ Calculator.
Fun fact for others, aegis released cast rainbow wind. It does hp leak and can skip archaeoaevis form change
Beastmasters exercise their right to bear arms.
Finally! Little pigm.. I mean diamond bell 🔔 has seen some use))))😂😂😂
Do you think Beastmasters would be better if you stock up on monsters like items? Catching would still be tedious but less backtracking to restock.
Shinryu has dragon whisker as a rare steal if you wanted to try that hell. Considering how you were trying to farm stingray I guess you are up for something like that though lol.
epic nuzlock run of final fantasy 5!!
what job is that in the Second Crystal Far Right still Gray out?
Mime probably.
You will eventually get that rare steal!
On the bright side, geomancers are protected from damage floors
are you going to do the hidden classes? I know they are post game but would love to see them ran from the start
No. The Advance Jobs dont exist in the pixel remaster and they're all post-4 tablets anyways so its not exactly going to be interesting.
@@BacklogBuster ahh didnt know they weren't in the remaster! I was hoping you could hack them back to the start
@@BacklogBusterI do wonder if you can just hack in the Jobs around the start on GBA and do a run with that but I know it’s probably not ideal or the jobs break so much of the game’s challenge?
Im not doing the advance jobs.
Beastmaster 2: Through the Portal of Time only run when?
Never used beastmaster in ff v. It's pretty cool, like blue magic
Maybe adding a "summon" type of effect? Instead of having to catch and reléase, once You catch You can summon any Beast You already captured
@ignacioperez5479 O problema que eu vejo é que ficaria muito parecidos com BLUE Mage e Summoner, e ambos tem algo pro fim do jogo
The fact that better Beastmaster is either Blue Mage or Summoner basically means Beastmaster is not only useless, but redundant across two classes. I wonder how bad Beastmaster is going to be in FFXIV?
"Lena can just beat off the team with the healing staff (to get them back into tiptop shape)"
shame that wasnt in the FF Anthology Translation
Vancouverboi! I love your vids but now your more awesome for being from BC (I am to!!) lolol
This looked like the worst of all so far. I felt your pain during this.
Beastmaster? Beast Mode!
Lets go!🎉
40:14 I have only managed to get 3-4 dragon whips so far.
Bear is the best. I do not envy this run
To farm the best whip, couldn't you catch 4 winds, save, and reload if you don't get the whip?
The only thing I ever use beastmaster for is to make my blue mage's life easier. I never realized that whips were so not bad in this game though.
Out of interest, how do you decide which job to do next?
I was trying to look at the order you did them, but I’m not seeing any obvious pattern.
Patreon Polls, his Patreons basically decide for him.
Thats news to me chief. I just chose whatever I felt like.
@@BacklogBuster Sorry, my bad then.
I saw another guy ask for the same thing on another video and got that response a few weeks from someone, I took that for granted.
We did have BeastMaster in the next game FFVI his name was Gau
I guess we're not counting Gau in ff6. He seems like an evolved version of Beastmaster, far less tedious and allows for multiple uses
Da Bears!
So we have geomancer, thief, normal, mime, summoner, chemist, and white mage left. Thief is just basic attacking with knives while normal and mine are other weapons (although does mime lose attack, but they can just rod smash), white mage will be a little tough till holy, chemist will be interesting, geo might be tough while summoner should be a breeze.
Mime loses both attack and item, but does have the ability to equip them in the 3 skill slots it gets.
1. "Pure" Mime is rough because they don't learn other classes' abilities, so they're just another Freelancer.
2. Mime is obtainable very very late in the game, there's no reason to do single class challenge run of them.
@@sertiana2512 Honestly when he does freelancer u can do mime in the same vid if u want. Mime can't equip every weapon unlike freelancer, but they can rod smash.
>hour long video
Hell yeah it's time for suffering
