Thank you for sharing this story. I remember as a teen my Father talking about Mata Hari. My Dad read alot & would often recite passages from stories he read. He was funny. You have a way of telling stories that captivate an audience. Thanks
For anyone wondering, this statue of her is Located in Ljouwert, her place of birth. The local museum also has a really great exhibition about her and her life.
Thanks FL! Wow. Mats Hari. Not a name I've heard in a long time....but one I heard alot as a youngster. Even used it myself a time or two in reference to someone's behavior. So cool to actually hear her story! IDK if they told us in school but I bet it wasn't very thorough.🧐🤘🍀
Absolutely loved this video about Mata Hari, it was very interesting and also you provided alot of detail information. A woman of mystery in more ways than one, of whom we probably will never know who's side she was truly loyal to.
Another great story, FL. Your research is impeccable once again, and your in depth portrayal of her life is told with compassion and empathy. Kudos on another wonderful video and I hope your research on your next one goes along swimmingly. See you next week!
What a fascinating woman. Those were seriously straitened times. Cannot imagine it really. She was a clever and resourceful person, whose wit for such was ultimately her undoing. Great to hear all these facts. Had only heard bits and bobs before. There was a rumour that the firing squad purposely missed, with the first round of shots but were then ordered to kill her, and only did so reluctantly and with rears streaming down their faces. Keep up the good work, sir.
@piggi nilsson I did indeed! If you enjoy the sun and beautiful beaches with clear water you would love it here. Panama City Beach, FL is where I grew up and is a wonderful place to visit. Look me up and I will show you around. Cheers!
Love your video's! You have the most interesting subjects and use only facts to tell their stories! Mata Hari was a victim of the time and place she lived.
I don't know what happened to it, but my dad had a picture of Madi Hari that was signed by her. I remember seeing it, but never thought much of it. I assume it burned with the house.
Thanks for the great work. A lot of information I had not heard before. No doubt we will never the truth but what an amazing dinner guest Mata Hari would make. Great stuff 👍
Read the book 'the spy' and loved the character Mata Hari. I wish I could see her in person. It is an important story that everyone must know. Good book!
I knew zip, about this woman! Sounds to me as if a lot of men who availed themselves of her charms, found a good opportunity to get rid of her. Doesn't seem that she was wiley enough to be a spy. Just a gorgeous woman, who used what she had to make her way in life. Thanks, FL!
Any chance you could do a video about Cornelia Sorabji? She was the first law practicing woman in India but there's hardly ever any mention of her since her activist work is overshadowed by Gandhi's.
"Mata Hari had a very wicked reputation / She was willing to be thrilling for her information / When she died she said 'What fun / It's the only thing I haven't done...'" -The Boy Friend, a 1920s Harvard Parody that got made into a musical. Thanks for this. I've read the book her accuser wrote; he gratuitously defames her on every page. It's illustrated with pictures of Greta Garbo in the 1931 classic film. Even to a child, she appears a noble figure, while he comes across as a ranting ascetic.
@@jennifergaylor1858 No. not what happened at all. Why is is so funny to you and joyful to have people hurt other people. So many emogis, are you 10? Good luck with that.
The interesting thing that you left out is that her only child, a daughter named Jeanne Louise MacLeod, died at age 21. JLM died of a cerebral hemorrage brought on by congenital syphilis she got from her mother - Mata Hari. JLM's father didn't want to identify himself as her father on JLM's tombstone, so her last name appears as "Non" on her gravestone. Who knows how many people and their wives contracted syphilis through Mata Hari. Dying of syphilis is horrible. JLM was truly an innocent victim.
Excellent documentary. Sad but women were forced into things to support themselves back then. Thank goodness women are more respected and have more alternatives now. But still a long way to go. Women are still not fully listened to.
Just like the movies of the day. Beautiful woman turned spy. What an exciting life. But she was born to be a spy though? Great "evidence". (and great pic's)
Unfortunately Mata Hari's husband infected her with syphilis and it was passed to her daughter. She was still alive at her mother's execution (Mata Hari spent her last night writing letters to her daughter, lawyer and Masloff) but died aged just 21.
Wait ... what happened in 1899? 0:33 In 1899 her father died, two years letter her mother died, Mata was only 15. 3:27 in 1899 both her children fell violently ill and her son died.
What a wonderful story I've herd of her. But this is the first time I've herd her life story did you say her age when she was executed. She took off her bilnd fold and blew kisses to the fireing squad what a woman
She also famous in my country indonesia. What a woman, she faced her death head on and says goodbye to this shitty people that condemned her injustly with defiance and dark humour. Shows them that she is not be broken by it What a woman indeed.
“... fell back into her old habits-“ bull shit- what could women do for a living back then? ( teach??!- only if your young’). Her ex husband probably killed the boy( jealous-
QUESTION: Why would men use women as an excuse? Why do they claim to be so incompetent because a woman is beautiful? Of course, I speak as a female from the late 20th and early 21st century, but I would never admit to being an idiot because of sexual attraction. Am I making sense? Men saying they were rendered incompetent in the presence of a beautiful female is in direct contrast to men saying/projecting their intelligence and purpose as being more important than females’...hypocrisy is what I am saying, I think...HELP! Someone please succinctly make a TLDR for me!! Xoxo
But firing squad though? That was extra. They could have hung her or even cut her head off but FIRING SQUAD? I wanna go to her grave and apologize to her. That’s horrible.
Yes, finally. A decent historical doc about Mata Hair, comprised of facts rather than the usual myriad of myths and rumors. Thank-You.
