On the contrary, I think that she DID thought about her future and every single step she took, otherwise she would had ended up with a venerial disease like the rest of the girls in that "profession". It takes much thinking to succeed.
Emile Zola was inspired to write Nana, based on her life--but it is a hateful, misogynistic novel about the ruin courtesans wrecked on the families of their patrons and Nana is punished by Zola through disease and death. When he was writing the novel, he interviewed many courtesans and was disappointed that none were the debased sort he wanted for his book.

What a night and day difference she and La Paiva were despite being in the same profession. Pearl actually seemed like she was a sweetheart and was willing to help the soldiers who were wounded she also cared about supporting her family back in London. I wish she had married and found a decent man to live with. La Paiva was a lot more business savy but has the heart of ice, she cared about no one but herself but died surrounded by wealth and comfort with a husband who was so obsessed with her had her remains embalmed and kept in his attic. Pearl had a beautiful heart and yes it was a good call for her not to open the door when a man stood outside with a gun and the intention of killing her.. that doesn't make her a cold hearted witch.. it was a wise decision

She could have easily, but she chose not to. Some poor people save, what little they can, and some rich people spend all. It was her choice to not save.
She mostly spent on herself, but it does warm my heart that she did occasionally thought about others as well. Highly intelligent though not very wise!

It's definitely not a new story for a prostitute to not save any money especially when they start on big money young. I myself am one of them and I have many friends who were and are the same we think it will last forever and never could think a younger better looking girl will take our best clients but they do and we end up in the same ways poor or dead.
I'm 33 poor not desperately but still in the low income bracket and I'm now disabled thanks to a long hidden medical condition. but I lived a very lavish and fun lifestyle when I was 16 to 24. Now I'm a house wife and mother and truthfully miss those days.
And I'm one of the lucky girls to find a good man who respects her and have a pretty normal life without major drug or Alcohol addiction or a major STD. I just wish I thought about saving or investing some of the money I made as I wouldn't be struggling to pay for things when they come up unexpectedly like my car needing to be fixed and things like that. Instead I would blow my money away on parties, clothes, jewelry, beauty treatments I would have my nails done at least once a week sometimes more depending on my outfit for the night and rented way to expansive apartments as I thought I was to young to buy a property and be stuck in one place for to long.
But big money at a young age when you have never had that much money before means you tend to do stupid things. The lower end of prostitutes (not the lowest end like day time street walkers) actually end up doing better than the higher end girls in the long run they know they can't rely on a constant client to be there every week to see them so they actually learn pretty quickly to save and invest and most of them end up madams when they have to retire. But most high end girls end up killing themselves once they realize they have lost there youth and beauty as they have no idea how to live without it.

That's what they were. I'm not sure how sexually active most of these courtesans were. Once they attained a certain place in the firmament of the demi-monde, they really called all the shots. Men would throw 'millions' at them just to sit in conversation with them or watch them wearing a diamond necklace they bought from across the opera house. Its a strange concept that almost doesn't exist today but actually it does. Ahem. Only Fans. etc. Madame de Pompadour is a good example of this. As are most of the mistresses of the 17th century. It was more than sex.
She was very beautiful and dresses like a princess. What a fascinating life. The photo of the wife at 4:26 made me laugh a little (things do not change much). I loved this story and the photos. Thank you FL 💕

By todays standards, she was a true beauty. Funny how over the centuries the idea of beauty change for women.

@3rrlia I think the point she's making is that to *us* she's what we consider a "classic beauty" that was unappreciated in her time. Back then being pale was so in-style and considered so beautiful that women were leeching and blood-letting to achieve a paler complexion. Because only peasants had tans, from working in the sun. Nowadays being tanned is the preferred complexion (at least, in the women I see where I live).
@@Tiabliaj1989 I think tan is sub consciously attractive in society as it shows a person is able to have the money to go out to say beaches and explore the outdoors and maybe is more fit for doing so.
While being pale sub consciously shows someone who stays inside and possibly only works or I guess boring.

Ever notice a lot of old statues have tiny penises? Because back then having a big dick meant you were stupid and brutish. Small penis meant big brain. Yet many men today are very self-conscious about size and girth and would prefer to be bigger. Beauty standards change over time.

You’re an amazing narrator. Beautiful voice. What a beautifully tragic life. All that in 51 years!!! It really shows that people can use each other she and her patrons and when things go south for each other see you!! It also shows the fragility of life and how keeping afloat for ANYBODY is just one tiny hole in the boat and you’re sunk. Also the term what comes up must go down comes to mind. I feel for her but if her relationships were not built on any real foundation then it’s sadly to be expected she wouldn’t have any truly close friends. I feel sad she was deprived of a loving childhood to give her this foundation. 💗💗💗

@@femmefatale71 I'm not sure...I've personally never heard of it but theres lots of movies about courtesans. Dangerous Beauty about the most famous courtesan of all time. Cheri about a Belle Epoque courtesan based on the book by Colette I think. And the HULU series Harlots is a gritty show about the 18th century sex trade in London also with two of the main characters as courtesans. There is also Maison Close about a 19th century Parisian brothel. I wish theyd do a Harlots:Paris and base it off the grandes horizontales of the 19th century.

This was a really awesome true story; as I could relate to her in alot of ways. The difference was that I was a dancer and a a few " liaisons". I never got married, nor had any children.
Hopefully, my ending won't be the same. I'll just keep it at that.
These stories are so fascinating to me...smart, beautiful, strong independent women that make the best of what was allowed... But invariably they live like there is no tomorrow and the ending is very sad.

I think thats an injustice to Paris Hilton who has never been a sex worker... she built her image based on her persona and a business empire largely 'on her own'. Of course she had a leg up being born who she was...
Money can't love you. Money will bring you false friends. During her hey-day it may have appeared she had many friends. In actuality she had very few if any. A crowd around you doesn't mean you have real friends. People come and go like the wind. However she wasn't a real friend herself and only sought after riches. In the end she had nothing. How sad.

Not everyone needs friends to be happy. She found happiness in her independence, being able to be single and enjoy the most amazing things she never thought she would. They tackle all sorts of rejection and social stigma both from their families and peers (as Emma most certainly would be in her time if she'd tried to return to her grandmother and carry on with her living) and mental problems caused by it and by the mistreatment in their past, which in turn gives them difficulties or even prevents from getting sufficient education and/or a chance of getting and holding a job that would pay for their living. They end up sucked in by the underworld which accepts only one currency from them - their bodies.
Yes, society really needs to stop dehumanizing and devaluing women who either sell sex or just have a lot of it.

Movies are expensive to make and costume dramas are pretty rarely that successful. I'm very surprised with the advent of Netflix and Hulu, Prime etc. that nobody has but theres tons of interesting people that don't have movies about them...most of the Courtesans of the 19th century in fact. If I was a very rich person, I'd produce a second version of Hulu's Harlots but based on the 19th century Parisian grandes horizontales... grittier and longer form than a movie could do.

It is sad that education was not available to her so that she could pursue a different path. Although I regret her moral choices, she had gusto, charm, and was a risk taker. This video mentions her dying her hair to match her outfits. Who knows what she would have been today? She may have become a fashion stylist, beauty consultant, entrepeneur, women's equality/liberation advocate, or a feminist best selling author...
I shouldn't judge her too harshly for her choices because the fact that her father abandoned his families over and over, it is no wonder she was greatly affected psychologically so as to never allow herself to be abandoned in such a way. Marriage and having children had become unthinkable to her.

Great story, FL, though sad in its way. She used what she had to live a wild and, for the times, wonderful life. Her ending must have been extremely painful and I’m surprised she didn’t end up addicted to laudanum by the end. Thanks for another interesting story. An excellent mini-documentary, a salutary lesson in the old saying “mother/grandmother knows best”, if she had listened to her grandmother she wouldn’t have ended up as a high class prostitute, just a lowly milliner or housewife with many children hanging from her skirts, I wonder which lifestyle she preferred??????????, but we will never know, but I think we can all guess. One thing is for sure, she was shy of doing the outrageous and exuberant things that made her stand apart from other prostitutes. I love the way they like to call the payments to her for sexual favours a “pension”, I wonder if that allowed them to claim “tax relief” on such payments. Unfortunately this woman didn’t have any sense of “saving for a rainy day “ unfortunately woman who live the way she did have a relatively short professional “shelf life”.
