Why doesn't this woman have a tv series yet? This episode was not only funny, interesting, dark, AND educational but also just had a great well articulated message about keeping history honest. I love it so much
While I TOTALLY support the sentiment, if I were her I’d stay right where she’s at. She makes like all her profits and she has total creative freedom. Best place to be in my opinion. 🤔
I am Descendant of some of the rosewood survivors (beulah carrier-Sherman aka scrappy in the movie was my great great great grandma.) Thanks Bailey for shedding light on this. Not a lot of people know about it
Wow. My condolences to you and your ancestors. We need reparations for them (more than $100 smh) & so many others who suffered terrible tragedies like these.
I was literally like, “hasn’t she told this story before?” Because I’ve watched the Tulsa Race Massacre video. I find it so disturbing that it’s a completely different story but so similar and nothing was done about either times, plus it is hidden from the world practically. I’d never heard of them until Bailey. Disgusting. Thank you for videos like these though. It’s so important.
That's what I was thinking!! Took me a minute to realize it's a totally different story. So sad this happened once, let alone twice...and I'm sure many other times no one knows about.
And none of this is talked about even though it should because think about the karen video's half are like this but less severe. History repeats itself but if you talk about it we can see the signs.
Bailey can you do a podcast about the boarding schools and all the Native American children they are finding in graves. People need to learn the truth about these boarding schools.

I grew up like an hour from Rosewood and we never learned about this. Which isn’t surprising given its Florida but every time I learn about something in history, that has been basically erased, I get so mad. Thank you for educating me so that I may better educate my son.
There is a movie about this. Its an old movie but most in the African American community watched it as kids. Even though its erased from school books, if more white ppl were willing to watch movies with AA characters or be okay with listening to AA people, maybe more wouldve been aware of what happened.
Bailey: “ We have to make sure we keep history, and that we keep it honest and transparent because without that we are doomed to repeat it.” Yes, we need more of these.
Bailey, This was a horrible, horrible event but your storytelling abilities are exceptional and educating. I love all your videos but Dark History is a special treat. Thanks
What was the podcast about for #2? I don't really like listening to Podcasts and I prefer to watch them on TH-cam (I'm a visual learner). I agree that her storytelling abilities are amzaing. Many people would enjoy history more if they had a teacher like Bailey.
I am 60 years old. I have lived in Mississippi all my life. I’ve never heard of this massacre. It certainly was never taught in school. Thank you, Bailey Sarian for this very enlightening account of this tragedy.
This is so heartbreaking. One lying, cheating person started a domino effect that destroyed a whole town and so many families lives. I truly believe they shall reap what they sow. Bailey I love the podcast and your backgrounds are beautiful! Love your outfit too! You do such a great job on these videos!
I don't know, I feel like they've all gotten away with it. No one was ever punished (besides the victims) and the perpetrators are mostly all dead. Yet the survivors & their descendants live with the scars. We need justice in a new way. Reparations, anyone?
Can you do a “dark history” surrounding “residential schools/industrial schools/American Indian schools” in Canada they are now digging up around old schools and finding hundreds of unmarked graves of children as young as 3-4. This was overlooked for decades! Something to research !
I am crying like a baby. All those innocent people... I'm a black Floridian, and this is the first I'm hearing of what actually happened in Rosewood. Idk if Bailey knows just how special her videos are 💚
It says so much that they erase history like this. Is it because they're ashamed? They don't want the heat? Can't be because they're "not those people anymore" because those truly changed want to right their wrongs.
It could be that she was not having an affair and this was a plan she and the dude (and probably others) had set up to cause some problems, cause that big mob came in just a few days, which to me seems very quick
She may thought someone saw him come over and decided to start screaming so it would seem like an attack since word travels. May or may not have even been a black man. Who knows ? Karen's existed back then apparently.
Kudos not only for sharing this story but more importantly - for sharing the names of those who were lost. As long as we speak their names, they are remembered. Thank you for that.
This episode hurt me to my core. The fact that there is still no recognition at this blatant hate massacre is baffling and quite honestly disgusting ! I couldn’t hold back tears picturing those poor children who had to hide for days in a swamp more than likely full of alligators.
I believe this also applies to the groups that want to tear down existing history or monuments. If they’re standing, people can point out the statues and explain why they exist.
I recently learned about thriving black communities that were flooded to make lakes. My ancestors will not be forgotten, even if they keep trying to erase us.
Please Bailey, do something on the horribleness of Residential schools-especially in Canada. There’s a huge knowledge gap in the horrors. I love you!!! You’re amazing! Thanks for doing what you do!!!

Kendall Rae is the one who’s really sensitive to true crime topics. But Bailey is cool too. Bailey definitely goes for the cash grab tho with the gruesome flashy stories.
Rest in peace to all the victims who lost their lives during this massacre. Their lives were lost because a white woman didn't want to admit she was having an affair. Disgusting
It used to happen all the time. Even children were hung for being inappropriate, as if a child would dare do something so foolish back then. Always to avoid public shame.
If i can remember correctly, i saw a case where a 14 year old black teenager was strapped to an electric chair and executed for being wrongly accused of something. His name was George Stinney
I’ve heard of this story several times before, and each time it fills me with an overwhelming sense of dread and fear and astonishment. From Proudly being apart of the black community my heart breaks that we had to go through this. It started from a lie and then was escalated through racial motivations.
Bailey, could you look in to the “Indian Boarding Schools” ran by the Bureau of a Indian Affairs of Alaska? I love that you are doing this. As a high school teacher, I applaud your desire to teach the actual events as they occurred, not the heavily edited versions of the history books. You are so engaging, and I know a whole lot of people will be watching and learning.
YES!!! There have been almost 2000 bodies of native children found in unmarked graves from 6 residential schools in Canada. There are over 300 residential schools in the US alone.
I live in Florida and we DEFINITELY didn't learn anything about this. We also didn't learn about the Tulsa race massacre or the Native American boarding school's. Makes me realize how ridiculous schools are
They all but completely exterminated the Mohican tribe of indians as well. Today their is about 1500 left. About half of these people live on a reservation in Wisconsin.
See I must have lived in a bubble of reality growing up. We learned about all the stuff you mentioned. My mom was raised in Oklahoma and my grandfather worked for the federal government. His job was to give land back to Natives who asked for it.
Hi Bailey! I'm hoping you see this but knowing that you have covered the Tulsa Race Massacre before, I was wondering if you would be interested in learning or covering the Wilmington Race Riot(Massacre) that happened in Wilmington NC back in 1989. It is something that has been really buried here in NC.. I was raised here and I just learned about it last week on a trip to the Poplar Grove plantation (which was known for being a Union loyal plantation until they were forced to succeed with the rest of the state.) The woman who led our tour had me in tears by the end and really expressed the true history of what went on at the plantation... it was an amazing experience. I would love for the sake of change and uncovering the history North Carolina is trying to bury.

As a black woman, I'm so grateful for you bringing attention to this part of history, please do more stories about the violence that was set upon black people and black communities. Love you Bailey!
I've now seen both the Tulsa massacre and now Rosewood. South Omaha, Nebraska (where I live) had 2 racially motivated fires. The first was in 1909 to drive out the Greek population in South Omaha. The second fire was in 1919 after the lynching of Will Brown, a black man wrongfully accused of r*ping a white woman. Even TODAY African-Americans living in Omaha all reside in the Northern part of Omaha.
The overwhelming pattern of this kind of behavior goes beyond any human rationale. There were DOZENS of similar acts across the country in the time period that destroyed and disenfranchised Black populations for generations to come. The whole truth is the only way to heal
Right? There’s no way this happened just twice. Just look at the history of Central Park and all of the potential generational wealth and legacy that was just stolen from the black families that owned buildings there before it’s construction.
at the start you mentioned " dont let history repeat itself" it reminds me of secondary school where i had a badass history teacher (was a biker feminist and was just amazing!) she said to me "if you dont learn from history , you are doomed to repeat it", always stuck with me :)
So my ex is actually from this area and his mom was in the Rosewood movie, in the church scene. I learned about this in high school on my own. I grew up in a predominantly white town in rural north Florida. It’s maddening that the state is working so hard to keep such as race based parts of American history out of the classroom so white students don’t feel bad about their race. But what about minority students who’ve had to deal with those feelings for decades?

I started crying when Bailey said people ran to the swamp for safety. A swamp… in FLORIDA… which probably had alligators. The safest place these people had was a place where they would still be in constant fear for their lives.
I hadn't thought about that at first. This makes my heart hurt, especially knowing this was for severally freezing nights and these poor people knew that leaving meant CERTAIN death and staying meant only POSSIBLE death. 😭
What you've really got to worry about at this point are the MOSQUITOES. The people that fled into the swamp may very well have contracted yellow fever, a Florida scourge.

For people searching for episode two I found it on her podcast playlist on audible. I'm not sure why she didn't post in on TH-cam. The episode is called Zoot Suit Riots and it came out on June 9th.
I'm not from the US but I think it's disgusting removing certain parts of history it's as if their pain and suffering meant nothing, so let's erase it....then again this has happened all throughout history. History is foretold by the winners basically and how they want it to be told and not how it actually was unfortunately.

For those interested, there's an actual movie on it. It's really heart wrenching and you'll see some familiar actors playing the roles. I think it's just called "Rosewood". I'm shocked at how many people never heard this story, but truthfully, our school systems don't really teach these things.
I believe that the woman who lied didn't even feel bad about what erupted out of her little lie. Even if she thought about telling the truth for one second, I bet she didn't care to go through with it because A.) what about her societal image B.) the damage was already done and she couldn't do anything to reverse it (not that she would care to). What a cold cold cold heartless woman!
Her and countless other white women who used black people as scapegoats or falsely accused them of crimes. It's still happening today. Obviously not resulting in an almost week long massacre though. Thank goodness.
I can't believe it's not taught in American schools. I'm from Germany and we discussed that case in ethics class in high school as an example of mob mentality. Fun fact: Most of the times it's a powerful majority against a vulnerable minority...

I have to say this, however it might offend people. The continuation of the horrible Fannie legacy is happening and worsening because the Rosewood massacre was erased from public records. It is foolish to believe that just pretending these events never took place is the best way to treat with the trauma of what happened. Thank you Bailey for discussing these hideous apocalyptic event, and perhaps making sure people never forget so that this legacy might be ended completely.

As someone who has lived in Oklahoma, near Tulsa, I had never heard of the Tulsa Race Massacre in school or college. In high school they even make kids in the public school system take Oklahoma history to graduate. The only reason I now know about it is because of a history tweet that popped up on my Twitter feed. I found the house on Google Earth. You can clearly see the swamp areas that the people had to hide in. Gives me chills to see that and know they were there, terrified and hiding for their lives.

So everybody heard her scream and didn't do anything to help her nor did they seem to care. But as soon as she said a black man did it, all of a sudden they're all up in arms about it and ready to "protect" her.......
I think the neighbors that would have been home at that time of day might have known what was going on, meaning the women since the men who took up their pitchforks and firebrands would have been at work. You just KNOW they were sitting there, gossiping about "Mr so-and-so is over there doing the winkie dinkie with Fannie again". In a small town like that those women HAD to know what was going on. And in the 1920s, in the south especially, women didn't have any say in what would be considered "men's business"
I’m truly hoping whoever bought John’s house has kept it up and made it hopefully slightly a monument as much as they can maybe a museum and let people tour it

Same thing happened in Oscarville Georgia which is now LAKE LANIER. Another black town erased off the map completely .
And none of this is talked about even though it should because think about the karen video's half are like this but less severe. History repeats itself but if you talk about it we can see the signs.

She did one on the Tulsa Massacre too.
As a human being racism makes me sick and despair for all of us.

WOAH WOAH WOAH!!! Let me get this perfectly straight: You comment something that is completely unrelated to the fact that I have two HAZARDOUSLY HOT girlfriends? Considering that I am the unprettiest TH-camr worldwide, it is really incredible. Yet you did not mention it at all. I am VERY disappointed, dear sku

Talk about what?
There are so many others she can speak on truthfully. ROSEWOOD is well known and there is a movie about it. If people don't know about ROSEWOOD..I don't know what to say. My high school showed it in history class 20 years ago
@@AquariuslyMe127 such a f&cked up movie man
this just broke my heart... ugh. but I'd rather know than be ignorant to our past. thank you bailey
I'm glad you're covering this.. lots of people want to erase this history... I'm in FL and I ride through what was once Rosewood, FL often

Wow I’m been born and raised in Fort Lauderdale FL and yet I’ve never heard of this😲 My schools have never mentioned this at all! America must really has a lot of secrets 😤
@@Madamzae I'm in Orlando. But I went to a historically black high school so we learned about all of this. Ving Rhames starred in the movie named Rosewood. I also went to college with a descent of a survivor of the massacre..they get free education.
@@ilontaycannady6758 ou I wish I had as much knowledge as u.💜It’s kinda disappointing how I have to learn about our people’s past through youtube😤
I have to say this, however it might offend people. The continuation of the horrible Fannie legacy is happening and worsening because the Rosewood massacre was erased from public records. It is foolish to believe that just pretending these events never took place is the best way to treat with the trauma of what happened. Thank you Bailey for discussing these hideous apocalyptic event, and perhaps making sure people never forget so that this legacy might be ended completely.
i am the granddaughter of a residential school survivor (dark canada history) and this hits so so close to home right to the minor details. you should do a story about the 1600 unmarked graves of children found across canada as young as newborns.
Yes the Canadian massacre was just discovered.
@@SuperSizeMe81 It wasn’t just discovered. They were unmarked graves. The people and government have known there were bodies at these locations for years. Those unmarked graves are just recently being dug up.
This is one of those very public secrets that no one cared to see, so it got overlooked and ignored for ages. It's disgusting. Thank you for speaking on this!
@@samantham1643 Hi... I never said it was just discovered. I asked if she saw the movie?
As someone who has lived in Oklahoma, near Tulsa, I had never heard of the Tulsa Race Massacre in school or college. In high school they even make kids in the public school system take Oklahoma history to graduate. The only reason I now know about it is because of a history tweet that popped up on my Twitter feed. Absolutely crazy that events in history have been allowed to be essentially erased. Glad to now know about Rosewood and hope you continue to share more events that are not well known.
Yep I lived in Tulsa for a few years for graduate school where we had courses on trauma and diversity and still never talked about. It’s not right.
Yea, I grew up in Muskogee…..
Same!!
The history we’re taught in public schools isn’t accurate on complete any level. White washing racial issues is just the tip of the iceberg.
I found the house on Google Earth. You can clearly see the swamp areas that the people had to hide in. Gives me chills to see that and know they were there, terrified and hiding for their lives.
It reminds me of Wilmington, North Carolina massacre. As the black people fled, black mothers clutched their babies to their chests so hard to keep them from crying and giving away their location, some babies died.
Can you please provide the link?
@@aschwa710
Thank you very much. 😀
Yea
@@Arnelle_Art I live in Wilmington, NC and I don’t think I ever learned about our massacre. We were told we had an event in Wilmington and we learned about Martin Luther King because he was a major person here but don’t think they ever said a whole lot about it (I have bad memory lol so that’s why I am not 100% sure).
What im learning from this is that i had an amazing group of history teachers. We lesrned about this and had more than a month dedicated to things thst happened to black people, and another month for native Americans. They didnt bother with the same stories the history books told us, they really went above and beyond and j feel so lucky now
All the records were “lost” This country, I swear.
Ohhh but bet ya the Gov won't lose your tax info tho!
how convenient for them, huh? they want to erase... exactly why some ppl don't want critical race theory taught.
More like "burned". How malicious. Smh
It has nothing to do with the country. Everything to do with the time in history.
Or maybe you think all the other countries in the world don’t have dark histories?!?!
Yes and “lost” papers still goes on today, not only in US but here in Oz …..or they seal them for 100 years, so then no one is alive to be held accountable. 😡😡😡 really convenient isn’t it when all the papers or evidence are “lost”
I live in Gainesville and Rosewood is still absolutely barren, and there's only like one sign to tell you it was Rosewood at one point. It gives me the worst feeling whenever I drive through there.
Me too!!!
💔
They didn’t even care about finding the “alleged” man. They wanted an excuse to destroy a community they didn’t want close. 😭😭
A lot like Tulsa
I have family members that lived in Rosewood for years. You are right about there being absolutely nothing left in Rosewood. Now, there are a few houses left in Rosewood, but there is one of them that still remains "unliveable." Condemned. It's like they never seeked to really fix it or do better with it. I love you Bailey!!!
This happened in SO many other American black towns. Probably more than we’d ever know
That’s so disturbing to me. So many small towns just burned to the ground in that time period. Makes me wonder how now. You’re right… there’s likely more than we’ll ever know. Horrifying.
Check your local history. I found out they did it to several neighborhoods in my city. Apparently somewhere there's a tiny memorial plaque but no one ever speaks of it and they definitely don't discuss it in school.
Do you have a reference for this or you are just speculating?
@@Prismet she just said we'll probably never know bc it isn't well documented. As I just pointed out, it's often locally buried history. It would take ages to go to each city, go through the archives and see if anyone mentioned that time they burned a Black neighborhood to the ground.
Yes, I read something similar about central park in NYC
I’m so happy for Bailey, she deserves all of the success in the world.
I don’t understand how people can have this much hatred in there heart to do this
okay but bailey’s outfit is serving dark academia chic I’M IN LOVE WITH HER
"but did you also know that if you cut me open ive got a little pink inside" -Bailey 2021

Born and raised in Florida and still live here and never heard of this story...
I knew this story from a dear friend of my mother's. She actually sat down with us and watched Rosewood and Mississippi Burning. She had A LOT to say from her 97 yrs on this blue marble.
@@kimberlymoxley104 Thanks, I was trying to remember Mississippi Burning.
Correct, schools shouldn’t tell little kids about massacres. 🙄🙄

Born and raised in SE FL and never heard of this. So much wrong with our education system.
The saddest part is that the murderers, and the past government of America doesnt feel guilty. No one is sorry. No one is embarrassed of what happened. Let's be real, if those survivors didnt push for recognition and remembrance, that event wouldve been dismissed and forgotten decades ago.
Will those that participated in the riots feel guilty or remorse fifty yrs from now? There's your answer.
Please don't say no one cares. I do.

My grandmother was on the train when this happened. She was interviewed for a news paper article, when she was in her 80's. She was just a girl at the time going through Rosewood with her Mother.
what did she say about it?
@@ghjgggtyf She talked about the fires and all the smoke they saw and the gun shots they heard and that some of the shots hit the train. She remembered her mother having her duck down between the train sets.

A witness to the tragedy. I can only imagine the terror the actual victims went through, and how long that terror went on.... where's their newspaper article?
Thank you for bringing to light the dark things in history that is often forgotten or is "taboo" to talk about - you are right that if we wipe away history, how can we learn from it? Bravo Bailey, you are an amazing historian, advocate, and an awesome human being (and your eyeliner is 🔥)💖💖💖
I love her for talking about this. She grew a large following, and is now utilizing It to bring awareness to events in history like this. ❤️
So everybody heard her scream and didn't do anything to help her nor did they seem to care. But as soon as she said a black man did it, all of a sudden they're all up in arms about it and ready to "protect" her.......
Yup. All they need is a reason… or not.
Exactly
i clicked faster than bailey could say: "i'm laughing because-" 💀
It’s one of my favorite sayings from her. I told her a long time ago in an old vid, she needs to make merch saying “I’m laughing because”
I’m truly hoping whoever bought John’s house has kept it up and made it hopefully slightly a monument as much as they can maybe a museum and let people tour it
Rosewood foundation bought it July 2021
putting the story aside for a min, those outfits Bailey is wearing in the podcats are so lovely!! it's like the outfit is a character in itself
They are a MOOD!
As a black man, I’ve watched the movie about a little over 20 years ago, but of course schools never mention all these horrible events. I’m a big fan of the dark and creepy, and I love that you brought this story up on your channel🖤
