    My husband was a Marine and we were transferred to Hawaii in 1974. My children and I experienced a lot of hate from the locals when we were there. We had to rent a house in town while we waited for available base housing and it was such a nightmare. The parents would watch as their kids (ages 5 -13) would call my kids (2 boys, ages 6 and 4) names, throw rocks at them, threaten them, and even through lit firecrackers in front of them while they were playing on the ground with their trucks. My kids were playing in their own fenced in yard, not saying a word to anyone, and were very scared since we came from a very friendly town and neighborhood where everyone would smile and say "Hello!" to each other and perfect strangers. While shopping at the commissary with my children and me pregnant, the locals would ram me with their shopping carts, or if I was reaching for an item on the shelf, they would push me and grab it. We couldn't afford the food, so food was extremely scarce and I would not eat for days so my kids could have what little food there was. Several months later, after repeated trips to emergency rooms, our pediatrician consulting with doctors around the world, a conclusion was reached that my infant daughter was allergic to everything in Hawaii, so we had to have an immediate emergency transfer to get off that rock. In less that 48 hours my children and I were on a flight back to the mainland while my husband stayed behind to pack up and ship all our belongings and household goods. I was never so glad to leave any place in my life. All the hype about Hawaii is just hype. It is beautiful, but being called names, assaulted (and I was assaulted by local teenage gangs on more occasions than I can count while on the Marine Base! There is not enough money in the world to get me to ever step one foot at that place ever again. The locals hate military, hate the whites, and are only nice to the tourists with lots of money to spend on them. I am so glad you all are back home! Time to shake that off and get ready for more adventures! I vote for Alaska again! LOL! (If I were young again, I would move up their and live off grid).

      Hmmm, this reply seems just a little far-fetched. Maybe a troll?

      @@MNP208 Not far fetched at all. They might even still have the records of when the kindergarten teacher slapped my son and scratched his face because he couldn't pronounce the Hawaiian word correctly. Not a troll! You wouldn't believe the other things that happened too. I was extremely disappointed and frustrated while there. Elvis Presley's movie "Blue Hawaii" was complete opposite of what we experienced. I have always loved learning about other cultures, and immensely respect them all, so I was anxious to learn more after all I had read about. But, I soon learned that would never be. Out of the year of living there, the only locals that were nice to us was our landlord and one neighbor that had eventually warmed up to us and that was it. There might be nice people there, but they sure were well hidden. And by the way, when we left Arizona for Hawaii, whole milk was 39 cents a gallon, but in Hawaii 1/2 gallon of IMITATION MILK was $1.50. So on a military pay, we could not afford milk for our growing children, nor meat, nor eggs, just 1 can of Campbells soup with 2 cups of rice added to it to feed 4 people. Have you ever had to hear your children cry themselves to sleep because they were so hungry?? That was how military was treated back then, and my husband was a Sgt.

      @@ionecuff6323 Some family members moved there in 1970 and were able to live on teachers' salaries back then. They also purchased a home and raised two kids on Maui. They made tons of friends through the years, including native Hawaiians. Your story about being assaulted on base by teenage gangs doesn't add up.

    • @ionecuff6323
      @ionecuff6323 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MNP208 The gangs would harass & threaten the females to buy them beer as they left their vehicles to go into the "7 day" store on base. The workers in the store would escort us back to our cars to prevent further threats. They really hated the military and their families back then. I am so glad that you had a great experience and met some wonderful people. My Dad always told us there are good and bad people in all walks of life, and sometimes people hide the good in them, so we should give them a chance. Because of serious health issues of 2 of my children, I never got to go around to different places, my time was spent at home, in hospitals, or emergency rooms. I walked my boys to and from school. So I only met those in those areas.

    We didn’t experience this while vacationing on Oahu, Maui and Kauai. Bummer that John in particular had a bad experience. Working 3rd shift and having to deal with unfriendly coworkers (which you alluded to) is really hard. 😕

    This is an awesome video! We did our 1st visit to Hawaii this past Jan/Feb via cruise and I agree with you 100% on all counts. Hawaii is understandably too expensive. While it is beautiful country it is not someplace I would choose to vacation due to the costs of EVERYTHING! The things we chose to do (both retired in our early 70's) we enjoyed 100%. We toured Kona Brewery, super interesting. We did a UTV tour at Kualoa Ranch, which was amazing. Dislike all the vibes in Honolulu, but then we are NOT fans of cities. Look forward to your video on John's job and final costs. You kids are growing up FAST!

      Thank you! I bet that ATV tour was super fun! There were still fun things to do - mostly on the Kona side. I'm glad we did it but I've had my fill now. 😊 Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. We appreciate you!

    My sister and her family went to Hawaii on vacation and she said that she noticed a lot of hate…and that a lot of it seemed to go over the heads of many tourists. My sister said even at a hotel luau, locals who worked it stood in the corner shit talking the guests…weirdly in her presence like they thought she was fine.
