  • I ride the Boston Subway from the Park Street Station on the Red Line, then change at the Downtown Crossing Station for the Orange Line to State Street Station. I found the Boston Subway to be reliable, but very old. I was also impressed with the availability of internet service underground.

      You didn't need to exit actually. That was a separate entrance/exit to the red and orange line. You were supposed to walk with all the people who went straight back when they got off the red line and there would have been no exiting the fare gates.

    Your Red Line train was a Fleet 2 train from the 1700 series, produced by UTDC between 1987 and 1989. Your Orange Line train was a Fleet 12 train from the 1200 series, produced by Hawker-Siddeley between 1979 and 1981. Both lines will have their entire rolling stock over the next few years replaced with new trains like the Orange Line train you saw. The new trains are the Fleet 4 1900 series (Red Line) and the Fleet 14 1400 series (Orange Line), both produced by CRRC and assembled in Springfield, MA.

    • @edwardmiessner6502

      UTDC trains for the Red Line!? I should have guessed. I thought they were the Bombardier Silverbirds that used to be stainless steel that were delivered for the Braintree branch which then went only to Quincy (now Quincy Center). That assumption made me appalled at how rapidly the 1979-81 Orange Line cars aged compared to the Red Line ones, lol

      Some stations like Government Center and Harvard have been heavily renovated, but the stations in this area of the system are some of the original bury and cover stations built before the turn of the 20th century and a right under downtown.

      @trainman1647 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, walking between the stations that make up that little rectangle on the T map in Downtown Boston (Park, State, Government Center, Downtown Crossing), and even Bowdoin, is usually much faster than taking the train. Makes the fact that there aren’t any transfer stations between the Blue and Red Line a bit easier to handle, I guess.

    Park Street Station is the oldest subway station in America. That's why it looks old, because it is! It was built in the 1890s. And that's why the Green Line cars are smaller; they are on a different kind of tracks (narrower, I think), more like a trolley than a subway.
    My church is right across the street, too, Park Street Church. Come visit some time after the pandemic. Our church is actually stop # 3 on the Freedom Trail!

    • @PhillFernandes
      @PhillFernandes ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The tracks are indeed narrower, you were just missing one more word and that is gauge. The Green Line, of the four "Rapid Transit" lines is the only narrow gauge line on the system. Red, Blue, Orange, and Purple (Commuter Rail) are considered wide gauge or heavy rail.

      Um no. The C has some of the newest trains of all (R179) and some trains from the 1970s (R46) but mostly R179s. The E and R use R160 trains, the 2nd newest trains on the system and the E has been for at least 10 years. The R used to run R46s but now only runs R160s. The 1, 3, and 6 use R62 trains from the 1980s.

    • @benjaminsmith2287

      The oldest trains are on the A line and now the Broadway lines and they're the R46s. The R32s from the 1960s should have been retired and sometimes appear on the J or Z lines. But mostly the J/Z run R160s or R179s, two of the newest trains in the fleet. NYC has really retired most of their 1960s fleet and the R32s, what remains of them, are sort of emergency-use trains now. NYC will replace the R46s in a few years with the R211s. Staten Island runs old R44s from the early 1970s but it seems separate because most New Yorkers don't use SIRT and use the IRT, IND/BMT.

      R62A's started service in the 80's.

    That first train has an air brake system that sounds identical to the R46 trains here in NYC. You can hear it when the first train leaves after you get off the train. I noticed the older trains still have spring gates in between the train cars. These were used in the older trains both in NYC and Boston, they were used to help when the trains were moving so the car would not collide and scratch each other. They were also used so people would NOT fall in between the cars from the platform. The LAST trains in NYC to use these spring gates is the R62/A fleets. The R32 was famous for being the longest lasting R-type car as well as having some of the oldest spring gates within the NYC subway. Unfortunately they are officially retired. Today the only cars that use these spring gates are the R62/A cars. I prefer the NYC subway so much more.

    I must say that saying that anything in the NYC subway is "cleaner" than on the MBTA is a bit of a stretch. Last time I was in new york and rode the J line I literally watched rats running back and forth on the platforms and stinky sewage water running down in between the tracks. The New York subway is hands down the most dirty, messy, stuffy, unclean and ugly system I've ever seen anywhere in the world. It's also, of course, completely awesome and engaging for a railfan like me; and it's overall size and reach is astounding. Esthetically, however, it is nasty; and Boston's system is much more tidy and inviting in that regard. Also, you should've been happy rather than disappointed to have gotten one of the old Hawker-Siddley trains. Now is literally their last few months in service, and the orange line is the last of the lines where they still run, so consider it a unique experience that you'll never get again 😉

The beach is fun to walk and there are plenty of wackos to meet ! I have lived in this city all my life and could tell you many stories about the MBTA !. Park Street station had an "old bag lady" who use to pick up all the bread from the dumpsters at the restaurants in the area of the station. She would stand on the platform with the bags (usually 2 ) and dump them onto the track and all the rats would come running for lunch !. Lots of entertainment ! That transfer at DTX is kind of difficult to do, haha! Theres a pretty well signed direct connection between the platforms that does not bring you out of the system -the stairway you took was an exit stair to the Summer Street Concourse, and is not signed as a connection to the Orange Line. Also, on the other side, there's the Winter Street Concourse, which connects Downtown Crossing to Park Street, but it's usually much easier just to take the train between the two.
