- Hell yes! All these years later, I finally complete a run of this. So stoked.
Before I ever speedran Pokemon, getting the Gold Symbols in this game was the challenge I put the most time into. They were so hard to me, as an 11 year old kid, and the challenge was so fun, I always held them as the absolute ultimate thing to achieve in any Pokemon game. To do this run, over a decade later, draws upon those feelings, and really gives me a lot of joy.
I put a huge amount of time into routing all aspects of this run. While I'm sure some areas could be better, everything came together really well, so happy it all worked. Only 3 deaths throughout the whole run, and while they were costly, I think that's a pretty low number honestly, given all the absolute hax garbage that can happen in this run.
I highly recommend reading the FAQ below for this game if you haven't yet. It has a lot of information about the run, and the Battle Frontier in general, and should answer most questions you might have about this run before you even ask them.

And for anyone that asks, this is the first completed run of this ever. I'm just not calling is "WR" or anything because it's not an official category. Just for "fun". Last note, that this is a glitchless speedrun. There are some glitches that would just make this pathetically easy and boring (instant win battles, etc), so to make it interesting and competitive at all, I use a glitchless ruleset

You're Not That Guy Pokémon you encounter in gen 3 is not entirely random. Theres a hidden in game clock you can reset to shuffle the Pokémon’s value. Let’s say you reset the game and get the rayquaza encounter at exactly 13.65 seconds. The value generated for that specific Pokémon makes it a perfect IV Jolly Nature Shiny Rayquaza. To get this timing off is extremely crucial for min maxing a speed run. Notice how he begins the game resetting before choosing Mudkip and waits, resetting again once he checks the summary. This is why Gen 3 shiny hunting is absolute cancer, because it’s not a base chance, rather it’s an extremely tight timing humanly impossible to perfect.

@@Allanlbrr I am still not managing to make it more than 1 trainer before the Gold Symbol. In Battle Serviper I only needed 7 doors but some stupid speedy Metagross 1HKOed my Starmie with a crit EQ and then sweeped my Nidoqueen and Metagross.
Maybe I should breed myself a Nidoking and try my luck.

This is perhaps the single greatest achievement in any Pokemon game. Not only did you finish the Emerald Battle Frontier, which is undeniably the most difficult challenge for ANY main series Pokemon game. You have done a speedrun of it. You, sir are Fantastic.

It's all about IVs lol. A 31 iv Rayquaza really speeds up the champion as compared to 10 IV cuz 20 stat points.

Lots of respect for routing this run and actually running it as well. I agree, completing the Battle Frontier is one of the greatest achievements you can get in the series and doing that in under 24 hours is incredible. I also like that you decided to not use any glitches for this.

That critical hit to finish the run is just perfect
The reason the game makes you take the sleep twice when going from Lilycove to Slateport is because after sleeping once you enter the section between Pacifidlog and Slateport where the fast currents are, and if you look out the window during this you can actually watch the ship sail along the route, similar to how you watch Briney's boat sailing around earlier in the game.
Essentially there are two segments of the journey between those two cities, the Lilycove to Pacifidlog section and the Pacifidlog to Slateport section. The Lilycove to Pacifidlog section works like the S.S. Aqua in Gen 2 where you need to sleep in a bed to cover it, however the Pacifidlog to Slateport section covers how long it takes the ship to move across the map of those routes.
Coming from Lilycove, when you sleep the first time the game enters that Pacifidlog to Slateport section instead of arriving at Slateport to allow the viewer to look out the window should they so desire. Coming from the other direction the game assumes you don't care about the view if you sleep through it and warps you straight to Lilycove, skipping both sections instead of just the one.
Not sure how good of a job I did explaining it, but that's the reason why you have to sleep twice going Lilycove to Slateport instead of just once.

AWSUM Mr. Potato Definitely. The only reason I mentioned one sitting is because the Battle Frontier is nutorious for being frustratingly hard.
MudKevin Also, depending on where you die, you can lose 2 hours. If I recall the upper estimate of this run by Werster was 50 hours. It's incredible he managed to execute everything to well and only had 3 (unlucky) deaths

@@cerovk6000modest nature is + special attack and - attack. Which would be the best outcome for the solely special attacking Latios. - attack also helps reduce self confusion damage without reducing any other vital stat, ie: def, spdef.

The thing I like the most about this Speedrun, that really got me interested in it, is that this looks possible on a casual level. Sure, doing the IV manips would be difficult for a newcomer like me. But it sets a bar for "this is all you need to do". The EV training was something I thought might be cumbersome, but knowing how vitamins and EV berries work now because of this video, I feel confident that something like this, with enough planning, would be possible.
The Speedrun isn't just impressive. It's inspiring.

Dude. I have been trying 15 years to get all gold badges. I have amazing EV trained pokemon and everything but still 2 gold badges left to go. Doing this in the time Werster did is impossible for the rest of us

I tried to replicate his time manip by watching this and following along (after champion and on a manual save because I'm retarded) and managed to get the same good ivs for special def and speed with perfect for special attack but only gentle nature :(

It is so fucking cool to see you do this. As a kid, I sucked completely, and could barely do any of this. In hindsight, it's amazing Game Freak ever made anything this ridiculously hard. I was really sad when they bailed out of putting it in ORAS. This is probably, more or less, the single hardest thing to do in any pokemon game. If anybody knows anything that might be considered harder, I'm curious, cause this shit is just nuts.

I cleared Purity Forest and Buried Relic first try. They're not really overly difficult. I only managed to get 5 gold symbols in Emerald. The only two things that I can think of that come close is HGSS all gold medals and the Orre Colosseum in XD.

I'm stoked to see this game still being played. Gen 3 introduced abilities and forever changed the landscape of the pokemon games for the better. Beating the battle tower in Emerald and getting the gold medal was one of the frustrating and rewarding video game experiences ever.

I was actually thinking something similar the other day. I was thinking about how gen 4 did a lot by changing typing attacks to special and physical instead of a certain type being tied to special or physical. Also love the gen 1-2 love with the new evolutions

Pokemon Emerald, along with Ruby and Sapphire has broken RNG. The games luck isn't based on luck but instead based on frames. For example if he encounters Rayquaza at a certain frame he can get the exact nature he wants and the exact IV's as well. If he goes to his bag at a certain frame he can also catch Rayquaza with a pokeball no problem. There's videos that go into more depth than this and you can easily find them I think.

The shit you learn from a speedrun... In all my years of playing gen 3, I never knew that the scene would still play out if you left the rival's room instead of checking on the pokeball.
Same here, been playing since kid but just learned many things from watching these speedruns, what I didn't learn yet is why they all rename their pokemons, does it give any advantage?
@@RooyPiter Yeah, there's less text to display every time their name comes up, like when they're sent out, so it's faster in the long run. Each instance only shaves off like, 0.2 seconds at most, but that adds up over the course of a few hours, so it matters.

Holy fuck my dude, I could only ever beat the Seviper house on silver and THEN I found out there was gold mode too! Like holy fuck just Silver was near impossible for me.
I had all Silver symbols and one Gold (Dome) and I put hundreds of hours working on the others... never got them.
Like that one time i lost at the 9th run in the Tower, it killed me, that time i lost hope on the Tower putting it aside untill 2-3 more gold (never got any XD)
the battle dome was my childhood favorite and I only beat tucker once with an ancient power Armaldo against his charizard. once i made it to the 6th round tourney I had no chance of passing. ;-;

This speedrun is to collect all of the Battle Frontier's Gold Symbols. There are 7 Gold Symbols in Emerald, each of which correspond with 7 different Battle Facilities. Each Battle Facility has different rules and play styles. Challenging one of facilities allows you to earn a Silver then Gold Symbol for achieving multiple wins in a row. Literally I watched this whole thing for 1 or 2 weeks. All 19 hours. I love Werester's SpeedRuns because it helps me understand how to beat things in Pokemon I wouldn't have been able to do initially. I still worry about the Battle Factory but all the other Battle Facilities I will just use his Speed Run as a guide just like with Pokemon Stadium 2 Speed Run. I was that one as a guide too and I beat Round 1 in Gym Leader Castle and Stadiums ^.^
