    Just to clarify the HSS thing, it doesn't actually make the flash duration shorter. In fact, it does sort of the opposite. It actually fires multiple times in fractions of a second, almost creating a modeling light effect. The banding occurs because the two curtains of the shutter never allow a fully exposed sensor for a single "firing" of the flash. The actual flash duration for even full power is THOUSANDTHS of a second, but that still can't illuminate a full frame when the curtains only expose a portion of the sensor at a time.

    Good video with the exception of the statement that HSS allows for the flash to be a much shorter duration. It is kind of the opposite in that it generates many rapid pulses of flash to draw it out, almost as if it is a constant light. That is how the flash then illuminated the scene for the entire span of time that small portions of the sensor are exposed.

    Banding doesn't happen on the A9 because all pixels on the A9 are read in one go, whereas on the A7III it's line by line readout, top to down or vice versa, which takes time. In a9 the first and last pixel is read at the same moment. Not the case with a7iii

    Although the AD200 is a great flash for many reasons, I do like the AD360 TTL for several distinct reasons...
    1. The power supply battery is separate from the flash head. I can mount the at the base of the stand which gives a more solid mount - especially outdoors in a breeze.
    2. I don't know if this is applicable to the AD200 also but, I can shoot the first shot in TTL and get a basic exposure (rather than guessing the first exposure) and then convert that to manual for control of subsequent shots...
    3. I can use the AD360 battery to power other AA cell powered Godox flash units for more flash capability and faster recycle times...

  • @toosas
    @toosas 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like your tutorial and constant cover of the power of the flash. I wish you'd explained a bit more about the sony live preview and exposing for the background - as I understand, you either always gonna see correctly exposed shot for autofocusing, no matter the settings, or you will see the real preview but when exposing for the background - the subject might be too dark to focus onto reliably. There are some options for switching between the two and I presume is what you were doing behind the scenes to get the real exposure. Am I even close?

    • @Miketz
      @Miketz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the darkness of the image is due to short shutterspeed, then the camera will still focus regardless of what it displays.
      As soon as a compatible flash or trigger is placed on the Sony, the display reverts to showing a correctly exposed image, regardless of the camera settings. (although you can change this behavior through the menu system)

    • @Brianized
      @Brianized  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes... there is the weird issue with many mirrorless cameras, and especially Sony where once there is a flash, it doesn't show the ambient exposure anymore. There are two ways around this:
      1) Turn off the flash or transmitter, and it will show the ambient exposure.
      2) Set a custom button to "Shot. Result Preview". I have the AEL button set to this so I can just press it and the screen shows the ambient exposure temporarily.

    • @Brianized
      @Brianized  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      As for exposing for the background... pretend you're taking a photo of just the background, without your subject in it. Set your exposure to show that how you want it to be. I use a setting of about a stop below "accurate" for backgrounds as a starting point most times.
