Level up in Photography with High Speed Sync HSS | Speedlight Strobe Flash Tutorial

- Many speedlights and flash has High Speed Sync HSS. You need this ability so you can use your flash on a tripod with a remote trigger, during the day while using your prime lens such as 85mm f1.8 and 50mm f1.4. Normally, old school flashes can only trigger off with your shutter is at 250 or below. Once you're beyond 250 shutter and with your prime lens, reached over 1000 and more, your speedlight needs to have high speed sync ability and even activate it in your camera menu to allow that to happen. This is how you can get artistic and stylish photos to add to your photography skill and business.

I highlight recommend Godox and Flashpoint R2 speedlights over any speedlight and even over the Nikon, Canon, Sony and Fujifilm brand speedlight flashes! They are great quality, tough build, works with each other with transmitter, has HSS and nest of all, more affordable.

Greatly appreciated that you show photos with just the sun before showing the photo with the speed light added.
Thanks for letting me know! I tried to share it in a way I want to be taught. Stay tuned for more!
love your style of explaining, straight forward without all the technical jargon. Thanks!!
Thanks Brian! I make my videos like I’m explaining it to my friend so it’s easy to understand!
These shots came out beautifully!
Thank you so much Michael!
100% honesty when I say this... Truly inspiring... I definitely want you to know this. Thinking to get an AD200 or the AD300 (on a budget) but wow great photos, great information. Thank you
Wow Aaron that is super awesome of you to say! Yeah you can’t go wrong with the AD200 or the AD300! Good luck in your photography adventure!
Nicely done. Love that last shot with the sweeping veil framed by the night sky night sky.
Thank you so much Lex!
Brilliant! I love the technique of getting the base exposure by using Aperture Priority. I have Godox V1c and it took me months to try and work out how to do HSS flash. I thought that the flash would only work in HSS when mounted onto the camera hotshoe, but as you say in your video-they are well designed and know when faster shutter speeds are being used, even though there are no HSS symbols visible on back of the flash. It works, my wife and I tried it at f1.4 in bright sunlight=perfect exposure. Thanks for some awesome photos too for inspiration.
That is so cool you do photography with wife!
Love it myong your photos & lighting always stood out!
What’s up Raf! Thanks buddy!
Just in time, the video I was looking for!
What an awesome comment! Thanks Bravo!
Thanks for these wonderful tips. Great photos
Thanks for the comment Jarian!
This was super helpful. I love taking pictures of my daughter and I never understood lighting. I always pay for professional photography but it added up over the last 10 years. 😅
It’s great you supported the photographers! It’s good karma! Now that you’re getting into photography you’ll have a better understanding of what clients want! And karma will give you clients!
I love photography and I love this type of video❤
Thank you for that! I’ll be sure to make more. I’m going back and forth with my photography and tesla since they are both what I enjoy and do.
That was a very informative video. I learned a lot especially about posing and directing the subjects. They looked great in their photos.
Thanks for the comment! I’m in SoCal too! Temecula area! What do you photograph?
@@CameraToFreedom I'm going to CSUN and I'm studying to get better at flash photography. I generally take landscapes and am trying to do more street.

Very informative!❤
Thank you Ian! What do you photograph?
Been looking for a video like this to learn a good flash setup. Thanks man!

Great shots!!
Thanks Jerick!
Hey man I recommend the MagMod mag box pro 42’ it’s super convenient and assembles and breaks down in 20 seconds as well as produces some of the best light I’ve seen. Nice pics !
Magmod is dope!
Thanks for this. Very helpful.
You welcome! Glad to be of service. Let me know if ow when you try this out!
Strong Video, mate
I appreciate you nice comment Ross! :)
man you are very professional 💪
Thank you so much for your awesome compliment
You can set the triggers so that the light knows there's multiple triggers on the same channel and they can all have different power values actually.
It's the menu setting with the one person the three people and off.
Thanks for sharing that Raf! 🙌🏽
Amazing explanation and very nice photograph

Thank you so much for that Chris! More photography tutorial to come!
@@CameraToFreedom hey, are you also using the Godox X pro transmitter on your camera while having off camera Speedlite?
I actually want that one instead! I still am using the older one which sucks. I’m gonna get the X soon. They all work together.
Nice vídeo 👍you got a new sub
Thank you for that Brasíl 🙌🏽
Hey great photos!
I just subscribed.
How did you do the photos with the veil flowing so nicely?
Thanks Wally! That’s photoshopped. It looks way too perfect for natural photo :)
Great info! Could you explain how you got that night sky shot? I usually need a pretty long exposure in order to catch those stars and milky way.
Hi Marcel! That was two photos merged into one. Nothing too fancy
Muchas gracias.
Muchas you welcome ❤️
Loud and clear
Thanks Shallom! 👍🏽
Excellent vedio… also what size of softbox would you recommend for wedding and other portraits?
I love 32 inches if it’s in a studio and not much moving around. Otherwise I use 24 inch for engagement shoots and a tiny one for weddings since I have to carry it myself.
Hi,
thank you for this video! :)
What power did you set the flash?
You welcome. I first had it full 1/1 power when it was sunnier then as the sunset comes in and gets darker my light power would be half and then 1/8 and lower as it gets darker.
I've been looking at the Godox V1 and the 860iiiS TTL for Sony along with the XPS trigger. Of the two flashes which one do you prefer? Also, to clarify, are you shooting TTL with the HSS?
HSS will work with TTL but I wouldn’t recommend it because you won’t get the proper lighting that you’re looking for. After using all their speed lights, I like the 860 because it’s smaller. Get the one with the built-in lithium battery. Here’s the Amazon link for your Sony camera amzn.to/457GtDh
Also, out of all the wireless triggers that they have, this is my favorite one amzn.to/3OPWnfH
good job my friend , thanks , chicago studio
Thank you so much Juan! Appreciate your nice comment!
Ugh your pictures are absolutely amazing! What strobe are you holding at the beginning of the video? Thank you! 🙌
Thank you for the compliment. I’m holding the godox V1 strobe light. It’s a lot bigger, after using it for a while I like the smaller flash instead.
@@CameraToFreedom Which is? Thank you again
Awesome walkthrough! Quick question, what speed light are you using? Thanks !
This is my light of choice since it’s small but powerful: amzn.to/49qPUPC
@@CameraToFreedom awesome! But this one isn’t a speed light like the one you’re using in the video, you’ve linked a strobe light :) or am I wrong? Thanks !
Nice video! Thanks!!
My problem using hss with flashes is that they take loooong time to recharge until I can shoot again. Anyone with the same problem?
This happens to me too if I forget to turn off the modeling flash. Everyone you turn on your ad2”” and your remote, it automatically turns on the modeling flash even though your trigger has it off. So you have to manually turn off the modeling flash every time so your flash works as best as it can. With that modeling light on your flash becomes so slow to refresh within handful of flashes taken especially in the heat.
hey mate i hava a camera canon eos r8
im still searching a speed light and trigger.
i have 2 choices (430ex iii-rt , Godax v1 for canon)
i need your suggestion?
So first off, Godox came out with an awesome touch screen mini trigger that I recommend! amzn.to/3wOusXz then the flash I recommend is this Godox for canon that is lighter then v1 but better and lower priced then the 430ex - amzn.to/4bM6fjF
Great
Thank you for that nice compliment :)
ND Filter can also work :).
Yes that’s true 😎
@@johnilen why would it look better?
Only the good ones.
Why put a filter that can alter the image quality when technology gave you HSS?
@@fidodido664because you can get more faster recycle charging time for each shot from the flash. But i don't use it neither, just shoot the flash streight to thier face with speed 1/160, from my lazy photoshoot. Lol. It's good enough for the couple sometime.
Last 2 pics look like been edited or added sky or stars horizon?? Can you please explain? Thanks!! Good job!
Yes the stars were photoshopped in.
perfeckt
Thanks Deniz!
Do you have the link for the soft box w stand?
Thanks for asking Katelyn. Collapsible Softbox for Speedlight - amzn.to/3FuHucW
Photography light stand - amzn.to/3Fv2Uqf
I'm surprised that Makaela was shooting the couple wide open (f1.4) and keeping them in focus. Normally for couples I would have to stop down to around f4 to ensure sharp results
F4 is definitely the safest way to keep them sharp for sure. Especially if the guy is behind the woman otherwise someone is out of focus.
Man, subs!
Thanks! I’ve been making my Tesla videos but promise to come back to photography so thanks for your support!
@@CameraToFreedom awesome 🔥♥️
Hi Myong if you don't have a softbox what would you recommend to get around it?
Just use the speedlight without the softbox. I’ve been doing that for many years because it’s so much easier to carry around by yourself.
@@CameraToFreedom makes sense. I have the V1 makes all the difference from 560 II but I guess both could be used via a trigger? Also any recommendations for shooting outside beach party at night?
Two options. Use your speedlight facing forward and go TTL and shoot wide open aperture, shutter 60 and iso 400 if not more. Creative style, have two speed lights up on tripods high up opposite of each other and use your remote trigger to get creative lighting shots.
Good stuff:) any reason u use grid on that location?
You don’t have to for sure. I like grub sometimes since it’ll do a good job just lighting my subject and not light the background too much. More controlled but I like regular softbox too.
@@CameraToFreedom thanks:)
Even if your camera does not support HSS if your flash and trigger can do hss its still possible to do this?
If your camera doesn’t support HSS then you can’t use the flash beyond 200th shutter but it will all work with shutter at 200 or below like 160, 100 and so on so you can still have amazing strobe photography without the HSS. During the day you can use a variable nd filter so you shutter can come down to 200.
What softbox are you using? Can you share a link to it?
Thanks for asking Ninaa! Here is the link to the softbox amzn.to/3LqbFGN and link to the adapter that holds the speedlight and the softbox together amzn.to/3mQ5WQa
i bought the same soft box and my ad100pro don't fit in it. am i missing something? cause it look like ad100pro head is the same as your flash youre using
I put in the description for V1 which is the big round head speedlight like the ad100. The first link is a softbox for a regular speedlight. Return that to Amazon and get the second link that says for v1 speedlight. It has the bigger head. I’m deleting the softbox for the regular speedlight in my description now. amzn.to/3tHhb1r
What white balance did you set it to ?
Auto white balance
My camera allows for a variety of sync speeds to set it at. What would be the reason to set your in-camera sync speed to anything lower than 200? If you set it to 200, then you can still shoot a slower shutter speed. So, why would you set it to say, 1/60?
The reason why you would bring your shutter lower to 60th is incase you want to capture more light in a dark area. Or if you want to capture some light streaks a little.
@@CameraToFreedom Right, thats for a shutter. But why set the sync speed lower?
That last image, how did you capture the sky like that?
That was photoshopped :)
@@CameraToFreedom Ah! Wonderful photos all of them. Thank you for the videos!
what camera and lens you used

Hi what is the size of the yellow strip softbox?
Here’s a 26 inch I highly recommend that can easily collapse and quick to setup and put away amzn.to/440BmUV
@@CameraToFreedom Thank you! Great Job on your videos
What was your flash power set at ??
Usually at half power then I just move my softbox closer or further. When the sky is brighter I’m at full power then I lower it as the sky gets darker.
great video. pro tip for run and gun couples shoots: min ss 1/250. f/4. auto ISO. continuous eye autofocus. Manually adjust flash power with HSS on and review shot and adjust flash power if necessary. I have Flashpoint AD200 but went with Profoto B10 [without modifier - you will need the power and easier to remove in PS] now so I can read transmitter LCD and LCD on flash in full sun and it is MORE reliable than the AD200. Why? My assistant accidentally changed the settings on the AD200 flash with his hand and we could not see-read the LCD screen on sunny day to correct the settings. horrible situation when doing formals for a wedding -- looking like a rookie! will never take godox-flashpoint for outdoor shoots. ok for studio work.
Awesome project tip! Don’t let that one bad experience ruin it for you. The AD200 is so small and perfect for outdoor. :)
@@CameraToFreedom my point is the AD200 is the wrong tool for outdoor wedding-family photography. the profoto b10 is the best choice since you can read the lcd in full sun. plus the ad200 misfires a ton.
📸😎👌
Thank you for that! More to come!
But can I do this with a umbrella I only have a umbrella
You can use the umbrella for sure! You can do silver umbrella to make your speedlight stronger or if you umbrella is soft white then you can even face it towards your subject. Handful of different ways of using your umbrella.
@@CameraToFreedom yea but am using a neewer speedlite with the neewer triggers idk it not doing what i need
💯
Thanks Jonathan!
how to increase shutter speed with flash? My max shutter speed is 1/250 when flash is connected.
By default it sets that limit. You have to go into the menu and unlock it. Google HSS for your camera model
@@CameraToFreedom Thanks for your response. I'm using westcott fj400 with canon r6 mark ii. After firmware update, my issue got resolved.
what was your shutter speed @ ?
I first prioritize aperture, want blurry background then I’m at f2.8. Then I bring my ISO to 200. Then that’s what determines the shutter. If it’s bright outside then it’s high 40@ or above. Once it get darker sunset then it come downs to 100 Ro any where that gives you the proper setting. So shutter is what fluctuates but aperture and ISO is what stays still.
Wats ur softbox diameter?
This collapsible softbox set for your speedlight since it can fit the big V1 speedlight and the regular sized ones: amzn.to/46DDN0o
HSS lowers flash output (amount of light the flash puts out by up to 6 stops), reduces battery life, increases flash recycle time, and worst of all, especially in hot weather/direct sun, more quickly overheats the flash.
As a person that shot almost exclusively HSS for the last 5 years, it's not worth it. Just use an ND and 1/250s shutter. Only use HSS for action you need a faster shutter (sports, dance, movement), not for portrait, environment, fasion.
Great tip! Thanks for sharing Sanders!
Damn........ 1:33
⭐️
you lose power with hss and have to disable e-front curtain (electronic shutter) to avoid the vertical lines.
Ooh disable e-front curtains. Learning new things every day.
Graded movie is so much better !
Yes I agree
Oh to have so much time for these photos ! wait are these models ????lol please get in the real world
They are my wedding client. This is there wedding photos and they were willing to let me film them. This is real time.
@@CameraToFreedom , Apologises I genuinely thought they were models.
Brother you failed to show us how to do it. We all know you can, but the point of us taking our time to watch your video is to learn how to do it ourselves. 🤦🏻♂️ SMH
I thought I showed you how to do it. I try to teach how I would want to be taught and this was it. What are you confused of?
Plus it’s a free video 😒
You showed a lot of posing but not how to program the flash to get the HSS set on the flash
@@CameraToFreedom why is this even a comment? “ Plus is a free video” ??? Is a free video that a thumbnail says you’re going to show me something and instead you’re showing poses that’s all I’m saying.
It was unnecessary talking about previous other couple’s height groom shorter and taller bride. Make it sound like it’s a bad thing and awkward looking. It wouldn’t be nice for somebody to talk about your race. Lame.
How is having a fun conversation about height compared to talking about race. That is dumb.
Lovely
Thank you Joelz 😎
