When it comes to dehumidification. Oversized units will not de humidity correctly and cause freezing quickly. You want runtime so the water droplets can be big enough to roll down the coil into pan. Back then it was not such a big deal bc the units would run regardless of the condition but nowadays with efficiency being on top you won’t see 10 years in that condition. What i keep telling these educated idiots where I work not a hammer big enough to make them listen
I learned this accidentally. I thought in my son’s bedroom bigger the better, cool off quickly. Well the humidity averaged up to 64% in his room . Not good . Finally after research i found out they need proper btu level for the room size to work properly. Till i can replace with lower btu i ended up having to force the fan to stay on slowest speed and open his door. After that his room averages around 55% humidity.
For 700square foot i would much rather use ductless mini splits. My ducted central ac died on me and I’m converting to ductless . I hate ducted central ac. So much heat gain from the open ducts into the ceiling. No amount of insulation will make up for that heat here in Florida . No constant highs and lows with ductless as you get with central ac. Plus all my rooms will have there own thermostat as my son prefers his room around 4 deg warmer the i and , wife do in ours.
4 ton in 700 square feet will result in very high humidity
on the txv unit ,i have changed the power head on those carriers and have had good results,it is a good idea to keep 1 in the truck.thanks for sharing the info.

I'm an Associate Degree HVAC TECH. I watch you guys. Why does no one ck filters first. Air flow first.
Then pressures. EVAP and Cond.
On the freon subject. Electric is different. Still simple rationanall.
HVAC is not rocket science.
Rule of thumb. 1 ton per 500 SQ ft.

Word to the wise get the elitech cpu1g leak detector it's 55 bucks otd after coupon on their site. And treat it like u paid 5 grand for it. That inficon is no good. Its a scam trust me. Use the inficon for a back up. don't go less than 2 ton make sure u change the breaker when u do. the system was a lil overcharged. 77 pound suction maybe they overcharged it cuz the setup can't handle the air flow i mean its . And it.looks like the coil is a 4 ton so they matched it. also maybe the blower cap was bad or blower motor going out I'd have checked that for sure always. No need to overthink it somtimes best to just start checking stuff one by one. We're detectives we gotta see every angle it only takes a few seconds. I been doing this 20 years in the dry desert heat which turns everything brittle so it's super common that there will be like 6 ot 7 different parts all going out at the same time and very often totally unrelatable
My mom has a really small house and the HVAC company installed a system way to big. 1.5 ton would be perfect she's got to have at least a 2.5 ton. They under charged it so it runs longer. Suction line is never cold, only barely cool.
Sounds like messed up situation. A way you could try and overcome the over sized unit is put in a thermostat that one has dehumidification control and two set the cycles per hour very low so the unit runs longer. The dehu function will allow the system to over cool the space to reach its set humidity.
Good grief, I have a 1100 square foot home, I put in a 2 1/2 tone in 2021, I was afraid I put too much on my house 😳
Ohh I forgot the gree flex systems have dip switches in the condenser and air handler so you can run it at 2 tons instead of 3 tons if needed.

But you are absulotely correct 4 tons is at least a ton way to high.
But to me undersizing is worse.
Especially for cooling.
And humidity.
Yea those Gree units sound pretty nice. I can safely say I've seen 0 Grees here on the eastern shore of MD.
@@JeffsHVACAdventures are you near the cheasapeak bay area anyway if you can get them I would recomend one of those for your 4 ton guy.
In the 3 ton but if 3 tons is too much you can change the dip switch settings to 2 ton on the air handler. And condenser
But with them you need to use nylog blue and be careful not to over torque just like a mini split.
But unlike most mini splits it does have a high side pressure port so you can vacuam the high side.
And take high side readings just like what you are used too.
And the reason why I am not crazy about daikens.
Lennox, or trane or carrier with inverter technology is because I don't like that they require things like proproitery thermostats and are way overkill for the prices.
I like the gree flexes and the Mr cool universals are fine, if you follow proper procedures and ignore the manuals and let a pro install them.
And tell the hvac tech to pull out the air handler blower motor and properly balance the blower wheel.
Before installing any of them. With Mr cool
And the other issue I have with mr. cool is telling consumers install the quick connect linesets. And if you use them you don't need to vacuam the system out before releasing the refrigerant that's false.
And has caused a lot of problems.
Especially with guys then having issues because they did not buy gauges and a vacuam pump.
I am telling you this because a hvac tech also from Maryland posted a video on one of the mr cool mini splits.
And it was having problems that's associated with not vacauming out the system and leak testing before releasing the refrigerant.
I did tell him this information so he knows what to look for with the Mr cool minisplits.
But in this case I think a gree flex is the better alternative.
But maybe you could test a Mr cool universal doing everything the correct way with the so called quick no vac linesets and see how they hold up.
But really they should in the instruction manuals for the mini splits and universal series still put in there to vacuam down the system with a gauge set and a good vacuam pump.
And I think it would go a long way.
And more hvac guys like yourself I think would be willing to install them.
As the Mr cool universal series is very similar to the gree flex but gree unlike mr cool properly balances the blower wheel in the air handler at the factory and does not sell or market quick connect linesets and says vacuam out the system and that's how it should be.
Funny how that 2003 Ruud unit is exact same design as my 1994 Ruud unit. Mine still running good
Yea, Rheem/Ruud didn't change that design for a loooong time. I actually like it, with the compressor compartment right in the front, easy accessible.
I've got a 4 ton on my 1000 square foot garage. I only run it if I'm working in it. I can drop the temp from 100 to mid 70's in 20 mins. All parts were second hand.

The only rationale I can think of is I'm guessing that it is oversized for so Heat pump can run without the Aux heat kicking in?? This would only make sense if it were an old house with no insulation. Other possibility is that this system was made of spare parts as well.
@@JeffsHVACAdventures Works for me, it was a old lennox r22 system removed for upgrade. I live in south Texas. My garage doors face south and when i had unInsulated doors that garage was like a oven. I put Insulated doors and the ac in. I can turn it on with a wifi switch from my phone, go in the garage 10 mins later and it will already be 15 degrees lower than the outside temp. Sometimes I'll let her run and drop that temp to 60 to amaze my friends. Add a sound system and a flat screen and you're all set.

That's a huge garage but even at that it seemed like it would always feel wet in there as the unit doesn't run long enough to remove the humidity
You ever try the AC Renew product to try and free up a stuck TXV? I used it twice last week, guess we'll see how it goes. I've heard others say it works.
Yea I have. It does work pretty good for TXVs that are slightly out of range or starting to fail. Good product! 🤙
How about changing the fan speed on the indoor fan for the oversized unit? Slowing it up so the air moves slower over the coils and it pulls more heat out of the air until the T-stat gets to where it needs to be. Would this result it longer run time to dehumidify the house properly. I do understand it still needs to replaced. Just asking if you ever had to do this.
Yea I've tried stuff like that before. Sometimes it works.
It's hard to see equipment not maintained in any way by a home owner, just at least clean it once a year lol geeez this stuff costs to much but some will never learn.
hi Jeff great video ! i had gold medal install a new unit in my home cost me 14k i believe i got ripped off but anyway i live in NJ and have 1529 sq ft 15 registers and 3 returns a split level home , they installed lennox a 17seer condenser 3.5 ton and the furnace is up to 4 ton (2 stage vs ) the condenser turns on and off anywhere from 4 min to 7 min and when its turning off and on it sounds like a jet engine . is this condenser too big for my home ? existing was a 3 ton but it was 2003 and the furnace was from 87 . Gold Medal supervisor says 3.5 ton shouldnt be a problem for my size home what do you think Jeff ? if it aint too big then why i'm getting short cycles 4 to 7 min staying on and off thats too short of time? please help would love to hear your thoughts this entire unit was just installed its been a month now .
In your part of the country (Northern) 3.5 ton for 1500 SqF seems properly sized. However it's impossible to know with out a proper Load Calculation or Manual J. A rule of thumb here in MD is 1 CFM per SqF. That would put you at around a 4 ton unit. We are a little warmer climate than you though.
The run time on some systems can be increased right at the thermostat by increasing the cycles per hour. However if your system is communicating or if you have a matched Lennox stat, there may be more involved with it. Either way, you might want the contractor back out to discuss your issues.
I'm going to say the unit was a pull from a new home that someone wanted to upgrade -- or it 'fell off the back of a truck' from a construction site.

I was just thinking of replacing my American Standard 3 ton with a Carrier. Approx 1400 sqft home. What should I expect to be charged for the outside unit?
Every part of the country is different. What we charge in Maryland might not be what they charge in NYC or South Carolina. But I’d say for just changing out the outdoor unit your looking at anywhere between $3000-5000.
I understand too much ton for tiny house. Look my house 21/2 ton hardly to beat the heatwave. Climate is big change getting hot.

4 tons is fine for a house with bad leaky windows, a bunch of kids running in and out, wife using a hot stove for all meals, and no insulation....
I suspect they had little to no cooling on the top floor might be why they have such a big unit.
Never ceases to amaze me why people install such terrible systems that won't cool top floors.
Swap out the carrier coil for the same prices changing the entire unit if it’s a Goodman or an ICP

so is there a way to mod the ac to be less powerful? like underfilling it and blocking half of the condenser?
Not really because the compressor is still trying to put out 4 tons of AC.

I ripped my system out and installed a 2 ton 21seer mini-split full variable speed air handler system in my 1045 Sqft house and never looked back.

Somebody does not know how to braze. From what I see both sweat connections at the outdoor unit were not heated enough to draw the alloy into the joints.
That was a huge coil for such a small crack house.

A 2 ton AC should be big enough for 800 - 900 sq ft. I have a 4 ton HVAC system and my house is 1644 ft.² I’m in a very hot climate, Phoenix AZ.
AC Units are not sized on square feet.
Not on SqF alone but it is one of the main factors and a good rule of thumb
@@shentx you are right, square feet is just one of the data points used when doing a manual J heat load calculation. There are many other data points needed to give an accurate heat load calculation. I’m just a homeowner, I’m not trying to pretend I’m a HVAC technician.

@@grego10r Yeah and you also get a very humid and uncomfortable house with large temperature swings and a huge power bill with lots of wear on the equipment from the constant cycling.
If you want to be able to cool your house quickly without as many downsides, look into inverter driven systems. A lot of the time, they can be oversized a bit without causing problems since they can run at partial capacity when needed.
Cool and damp equals mold promotion. A proper sized unit should run around 70-80% to dehumidify the air.
School system hired engineer must have sized that house

Three things can call this blower fan not blowing air filter totally clogged up low on charge and if your wife's burning scented candles and your filter is black and it's supposed to be white stop burning scented candles the soot from the candle will plug the filter up

Too heavy of a filter, and closed registers will also cause issues and air handler not properly adjusted for proper airflow...

Way oversized for 700 square feet. A 2 ton maybe max 2 and a half tons.
As for the one guys comment on a 2 and a half ton on 1100 square feet that's okay but a 3 ton is okay.
But from my understanding of common sense the rule of thumb is 12,000 btus for every 500 to 550 square feet.
But for this application max size should be a 3 ton and that's pushing it.
That's pretty close to the rule of thumb we use here in MD. Every climate is different of course. We do about 30 BTU per SqF. Some guys do 1 CFM per SqF. Gets you pretty close either way.

Your going to want have a proper load calculation done to see exactly how much cooling you need but your probably going to need something in the 3 to 4 ton range
