All depends on your setup. There’s plenty of people using a gladiator for long term travels.

Yep! That’s why I wanted to emphasize that this was specific to us and our needs. Very subjective!

We have a Gladiator me and my wife love it and fits us perfectly for us I am 5'6 and my wife is 5'1 for us it works great and we are always on long overland trips so far so good for us.

That's great! Anytime you can get out and explore with your loved ones is good time.
I'm a hair under 6', and Hanna is around 5'9", so we definitely found the cab a little cramped over the course of several weeks. I still miss that Jeep like crazy, though!

It's definitely just about your preferences and set up, as many people are using the Gladiator platform for long term overlanding, for example, Dan Grec and his girlfriend just finished a lengthy tour around Australia in his (the road chose me). I think a larger awning with a wall or two is key in inclement weather to create a larger comfortable space.

Dan’s build is awesome. He did a great job setting it up how he liked/needed it. I totally agree about the large awning, too - they can make a huge difference in expanding usable space and sheltering from the weather.
It’s certainly doable (and epic/inspirational), but a little too primitive for how we want to enjoy a few months living on the road.
      Thanks for watching!

Great analysis. I have a Chevy Colorado with a similar setup as yours. Even solo, I've found it only good for short work/play trips of around a week or two. Like you, I'm working 8+ hour days and being stuck in the cab when it's pouring, freezing or hot/humid (I live in Florida) is not a great work environment. I've thought about replacing what I have with an Alu-Cab canopy camper, although better, it would be an expensive change and only solve some of the problems. I'm currently considering a longer bed truck with a Four Wheel Camper and some sort of A/C or just taking the plunge and getting a Sprinter (my dream would be a Storyteller). Looking forward to what you'll do next.

The weather is a HUGE factor with RTTs and small vehicles. It sounds like you've run into a few of the challenges we have and emerged with a similar idea -- a full-size rig with a better living/working space! We have actually made a few moves toward that goal, so maybe you'll be able to find some inspiration in the following videos (and probably learn from our mistakes).
Best of luck with the next build!

While you're correct, the usage and points of view are very subjective; I think you've covered a lot of points very well and they all make a lot of sense. My fiancee and I have a Camp King topper/tent combo on ours so we could maximize the living/workspace in the truck (the bed lifts up on struts). I also installed Truck Vault's drawer system in the bed so almost all of our gear goes in the drawers and we lay out a bunch of cushions on top for more comfortable space when needed. If we needed the additional space, we do the same in the back seat area (we have Goose Gear's rear seat delete installed) so there's a nice partition too. One thing I will say is that yeah, it's a Jeep and the Gladiator doesn't have the greatest fuel economy, but the next big addition is going to be the LRA tank you've mentioned.
Definitely excited about what comes next for you guys! Thanks for sharing, it's always great being able to see different views on the subject!

The points are very subjective, you're right. I wanted to share our experience and help people think about certain factors they might not consider if they don't have the experience.
The Camp King looks incredible, and your build sounds very thorough. Similar to what my dream Gladiator build would be. I'm sure it takes you on a lot of amazing adventures!
Thank you so much for the thoughtful comment. I love to hear about other people's solutions to challenges we all face when overlanding. Thanks for tuning in!

Since it's your daily driver, do you remove the RTT after a trip and if so how is it for the 2 of you to put it on? cheers

    • @rileyinthewoods
      @rileyinthewoods  ปีที่แล้ว

We usually just left it on. For the two of us, it would be challenging to remove and even harder to put on. More of a three person job!

Great video as always. So, what's up and how are you two doing? I guess it's like backpacking but just on a larger scale. Take just what you need for the time you'll be out in the wilderness and away from civilization.

All in all, it sounds as if your Jeep Gladiator isn't big enough to accommodate your work life. Which is a good part of your days.
It's sounds like it is plenty of room. For the overlander( vacations) that most people enjoy.

That’s the short of it, yes! For most people, I think it’s a phenomenal do-it-all vehicle and ideal camping rig. We simply outgrew it and felt too cramped on long work days.
