Whats sadder is that Midna implies that she loves link. “Link I- see you later” She also says see you later when her and link both know, that’s a complete lie. She destroyed tue mirror to stop any incidents like that from ever happening again. At the cost of breaking the connection of the Twilight Realm and Hyrule. So we never got to see Lidna. The mirror is also a great representation of our hearts. Showing the bond and love between link and midna. But when midna leaves forever, the mirror fittingly shatter because of her tear. Just like our hearts
@susiehaltmann3342 wow, this is an amazing introspection. I never thought that she came to love him in any romantic sense, but I definitely felt that there was a friendship there.
The secret ending for botw is more emotional in the Japanese version. In the Japanese version of botw links adventure log is more of a journal or diary showing more emotion from him. Once you finish the main quest of collecting links memories, in his adventure logs he states "I want to see the princesses smile again, with these eyes of my own." Which Link sees at the secret ending.
Midna’s farewell is impactful but I also think the ending of Twilight Princess is elevated even further by getting to see where everyone is at in the credits scenes, particularly the fact that the Ordon kids are finally returned home to their parents, escorted by our boy Colin who’s geared up with a sword and shield showing how he really learned the meaning of courage from Link. Chef’s kiss.
Tell me Colin couldn't be a Link in his own game, like where they make you think it's Link but it just happens to be an older Colin who learned all the sword moves TP Link did after being taught by him.
I have long believed that Twilight Princess is the most cinematic Zelda game. Other titles may have more cutscenes or prettier graphics, but only Twilight Princess was able to combine the dialogue, the music, and even the editing at times to make Midna a fully-fleshed out character that you come to care about. And of course that is also what makes the ending so emotional. I don't think you can go wrong with Twilight Princess or Link's Awakening at number 1, but Twilight Princess is my personal choice.
When Light Dragon comes to aid Link in the final battle, I’d asked myself a question during the 3rd phase: “Did she come back and maybe Draconification hasn’t removed everything that is Zelda?” I would strongly believed it is her love for her knight is what drove her dragon instinct/consciousness in saving Link from falling and aiding him against the Demon Dragoon. And we all seen that when her powers is activated when the one she loves is threaten in Breath of the Wild’s final memory.
Something I love about Zelda games as I get older is how so many of them have bittersweet endings. The stories always end on the right side and are happy ones, but it never lets you forget the world has changed as a result, as have you, and that means you will often have lost something in the process. I find this very relatable as I go through life.
I really love the way you edit and communicate in your videos. It’s almost seamless but simple enough where I’m not noticing cuts or music changes. Great video!
I forgot to comment this. My favorite Zelda ending is also Link’s Awakening! It’s odd because as I watched your list unfold I couldn’t remember what games were left after TP, but LA was the most impactful for me not only for its ending but as a whole. The music and harmonies, the weird eccentric gameplay, the mini games and anime looking selfies, the Nintendo cameos. It all culminated in an ending that made me mourn for these little pixels. I cried both over my DX version and the Switch one haha I hope they do more wacky and impactful stuff like that in the future
Skyward sword's will always be my favorite. The demise monologue/curse hits so fucking hard and really blew my mind because I played that game after almost every other Zelda, so the rush of context was nuts. And the actual gameplay of the fight is wild as well as everything leading up to it
Link's Awakening for me is the most rogue and just pure "art" Zelda has ever tried to be. In the way that it is just pure passion and emotion fueling the gameplay and story. It probably has something to do with the development of it starting out as a passion project and experiment by Koizumi and the Link to the Past team. Koizumi wanted to be a film director initially, Tezuka cites Twin Peaks as an influence in the game, that is not the kind of story you usually see in a Nintendo game, or a video game, period.
The ending of TotK where Link has to catch Zelda caught me off guard and I loved it so much. But nothing will top Majora's Mask or Link's Awakening for me. Great video!
i feel like if totk ended with zelda still a dragon, it could have set up an interesting sequel in a world far in the future, where link reincarnates, but there is no new zelda since the old one is technically still alive (so theres like a lacking element of wisdom to aid the protags, they have no idea what to do or something). maybe she dies at some point or in the end to set up a new incarnation
While it makes sense for one game Zelda is the namesake of the series and would need to come back making the ending pointless no matter what. I think the ending was the best it could have been.
Zelda is never a reincarnation if we're following Demise's Curse from SS (common misconception tho). He calls out 'the blood of the goddess and the spirit of the hero' specifically. That means that there could be a future Zelda post-TotK if the one in-game was still a dragon, they would just need to be someone of royal blood (who would, by pure coincidence, be called Zelda).
True but that’s not what @timestopMachinist was saying. He said it would be interesting if a sequel had Zelda still a dragon and how that would give the ending a larger impact
"Ezlo is an okay companion" How dare you? Honestly, I put him in second position after Midna. Having him evolve annoying jerkass that berates you nonstop to the compassionate old mentor that trusts you to repair his mistakes, I love that guy and the goodbye broke me as a kid.
18:51 it could be argued that there are three since if you don't get the masks most of the scenes on the ending don't appear, man majora's mask really makes you have to work for the good ending, not only the game is by itself harder than any 3d zelda but you also have to basically 100% it just to get a normal ending
Thing is about wind waker link He is the only link without the spirit of the hero in some fashion The hero in spirit tracks has the new spirit of the hero but wind waker link is a regular child who reforges the triforce of courage, reenchants the master sword, and rekindles the spirit of the hero, AS A CHILD, iirc he’s like 13 or something
I think it is fair to assume that neither of the Link's in the adult timeline have the spirit of the hero, especially if there is no ganondorf in the world anymore after WW.
@@jaytheamazing197 sure i guess but wind waker still had the odds stacked up against him more than others, spirit tracks was a friend of the hero and was therefore already connected to the royal family and then that was what sparked it
A link between worlds is home to one of my all time favorite video game endings, period. Link and Zelda didn’t have to make a wish, they even could have made a wish that would’ve helped Hyrule. Instead, after a heartfelt speech of empathy towards Hilda, Zelda tells us to come touch the Triforce, and you get to walk over and make a wish that saves all of Lorule
I’m biased but Wind Waker was my childhood Zelda so that ending will always be the best to me. The title theme playing at the ending sailing scene… chefs kiss. Link leaving his home island was a powerful allegory on growing up
1 thing important to note about Skyward Swords ending. Link and Zelda survey the surface from atop the giant Goddess statue, the completed Triforce floating behind them...and they contemplate staying together on the surface. This will lead into 3 major events happening. 1. The surface will be repopulated with humans directly from Zelda and Links genes 2. The Royal family will be created from this union. 3. People will go after the Triforce which is out in the open and the light spirits will banish them to the twilight realm. The backstory of Twilight Princess! For these reasons, even beyond Fi's(PHAI in japanese) farewell, SS's ending is my favorite. It sets up so much.
The King of Red Lions is the GOAT. Snuck all the way up Ganon’s tower to snag the Triforce away at the last second and sacrifices himself to end the cycle. Absolute legend
Out of all my 28 years of life as a die hard zelda fan I never once heard someone pronounce Vaati as ‘Vay-tea’ I’ve only ever heard it and pronounce it myself as ‘Vah-tee’ but there is a first time for everything
woah, ghost trick mention!! love your videos man, the editing is so fun, humor is witty, and now that i know you're a ghost trick fan it makes them even better :)
i haven't played most zelda games so i didn't want to watch the whole video and get spoiled, but link's awakening is my favourite of the ones i have played so i just went to check the chapter list to see where it landed. and i'm like .. did he actually fucking forget the ONE GAME i was looking for?? i cannot tell you how hype it was when i realized where it was
I had the rare experience of finding Fi amusing in the original release game which I did not beat, forgetting about her until the sound effect in BOTW awoken my interest, playing the new switch release of skyward sword thinking Fi is just ok, then crying the entirety of my second playthrough of TOTK because I know Fi was there the entire time I was goofing off the first time and she still puts up with me as I’m repeatedly being saved by my dragon wife in the last second Fi I was disrespectful I am sorry You deserved better
Breath of the wild DOES do exactly what you said it should. If you defeat Ganon without doing anything else, you will only have the scene with Zelda asking you if you remember her. If you beat the divine beasts you get the scene with the spirits. If you got all memories you get the post-credit scene.
Plus for Spirit Tracks, if you choose to be a warrior, after the credits, you see Zelda waving to Link while he's training in the courtyard which is cute. Also, in the manga for Twilight Princess, the romance for Link and Midna is apparent and shown a lot more which I still cry about
I always thought the linked oracles ending was pretty good, giving a lot of character follow-up and revealing that Link hung out in these lands for a while before departing. The LA and LBW endings probably moved me the most..
To me, the world disappearing in LA is very similar to waking up from a dream you really don’t want to wake up from. Link and the Wind fish were dream sharing after Link fell into a coma and the only way he could wake up from his coma was to wake up the wind fish, which caused the dream and everything in it to vanish like a literal dream does….except he was also dream sharing with a seagull who became Marin in his dreams. A whole society doesn’t disappear when Link wakes up, it is the dream world where none of the characters are real he wakes up from.
He can't rank the CD-i games because they would sweep the top spots every time. Endings don't get better than "I just saved you from Ganon!" "You did not. 🙄" "Link, you are the hero of Koridai!" "I guess that's worth a kiss, huh?" "Hmph! 😑" "I won!"
Amazing video, I really love the attention paid to recurring Zelda tropes like the companions leaving And finally some respect for the DS games! Spirit Tracks has one of my favourite endings of any Zelda game and I'm so glad that it's actually being appreciated Both of the DS game endings have developed character arcs for two side characters (Linebeck/Ciela and Byrne/Zelda) and also end with a bittersweet goodbye to a world or characted that you've grown to love over the course of the game, in Anjean and the world of the Ocean King as a whole Plus, Spirit Tracks has a little detail after the credits that nicely calls back to an earlier choice you make in the game Before the final fight, Zelda will ask Link what he wants to do after "all of this" is over, and he can choose engineer, soldier, or "dunno" Depending on your choice, the game ends with Zelda signing letters in her tower and hearing either your train whistle or the sound of you fighting in the castle, unless you chose "dunno", in which case she's simply content with the silence as she remembers your adventure together It's a really nice touch and I wish some of the later games did a little more with that idea
The ending fight sequence of totk is so amazing.. the hate totk gets now is so baffling I don’t understand anyone who doesn’t like totk, especially if they do like botw
I'm unfortunately a psychic and have seen every Zelda ending there is, and the best ones aren't even out yet. Although I was mind blown by the plot twist at the end of The Legend of Zelda: Aquamentus Apprentice, nothing compares to the heartwrenching masterpiece of The Legend of Zelda: Bowls of the Koroks.
Favourite ending is probably ALBW, followed closely by Skyward Sword and, weirdly enough, Spirit Tracks. Ravio is amazing, and the ending is an excellent capstone to an adventure as goofy as it was. Big props to TotK as well for all of that finale stuff they did. Also out of curiosity, where do Hyrule Warriors and Age of Calamity rank?
glad you put Majora's mask near the top. For pure story telling I think MM is one of the best Zelda games of all time. Kafei and Anju's side quest is easily one of the most beautiful side quests in any zelda game, and truly satisfying to see them get together at the end. There's also so much sadness and darkness within the game, matched closely by Twilight Princess.
aside from the ending... finding out zelda took the ultimate sacrifice in TOTK had my eyes watering hard. When he looks up after that last dragon tear collected. That was it.
Do you remember that episode from the cartoon where Zelda commands link to clean his room, she gave him in her castle? Goes the trying to shy away when confronted about it. Lmao!
Every Zelda game with memorable characters can land the tearful goodbye, showing all the people Link saved, maybe setting Link up for the next adventure/a date. It would deserve some points for that (setting up memorable NPC for example), but it's rather common. Only two games from the high ranked list try for more: Wind Waker and a Link between Worlds. Both have a lot common in the ending: active non-Hero characters, a twist or two, an unexpected wish, a 'sympathetic' villain, and a general theme. WW has a more universal theme, but loses points for a more arbitrary execution (ah, see Ganon, he came out of nowhere and touched the Triforce first. Also Ganon's speech is bunk, maybe that's intended). So I'd go 1. ALBW. 2. WW. (long distance) 3. Link's awakening (places below are all rather close).
23:30 WW Ganon is not-I repeat is NOT-a sympathetic villain! WW Ganon is the same guy from the adult timeline of OoT, who had taken over Hyrule and ruled for seven years. And in all that time what did he do for the Gerudo? Move them to Hyrule Castle? Give them more resources (food, shelter, etc) to help with the deadly winds of the desert? No. He did nothing for them because he didn’t give a damn about them. The “coveted winds of Hyrule” bit is a poor attempt to justify his horrible actions.
I feel like the main thing missing from both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom's endings is that bittersweet feeling. In all the great ones: Wind Waker, A Link Between Worlds, Twilight Princess, Link's Awakening, you have to say goodbye to something meaningful at the end and part ways with it. And you never feel ready for it. There's the ghosts (the champions and Mineru) in Botw and Totk, but they were already dead lol. The lack of a strong story focus means Link is alone most of the time, which makes the endings feel less impactful imo
Totk lack of consequence for Zelda’s choice and Link literally losing his arm left a sour taste in my mouth that persists every time I watch or play it now
I knew it was going to be either twilight princess or links awakening. Both endings are just heartbreaking and will always stick with the people that experienced them back in their days
I had no idea that's how A Link Between Worlds ended. That's almost the Zelda game I've always wanted! That being a Zelda game where you play as a reincarnated Ganondorf secreted away by the Gerudo as Hyrule's last hope because PLOT TWIST, the Kingdom is ruled by the all powerfu magical evil empress Zelda and her Darth Vader esq loyal black knight Link. Like Avatar the Last Airbender meets Star Wars the original trilogy.
*Crying about Fi's final words*
"Oh yeah And Impa just freaking dies."
Twilight Princess' ending is a real tear-jerker. An absolute masterpiece.
Whats sadder is that Midna implies that she loves link.
“Link I- see you later”
She also says see you later when her and link both know, that’s a complete lie. She destroyed tue mirror to stop any incidents like that from ever happening again. At the cost of breaking the connection of the Twilight Realm and Hyrule. So we never got to see Lidna.

Totk should have been the worst one

And finally some respect for the DS games! Spirit Tracks has one of my favourite endings of any Zelda game and I'm so glad that it's actually being appreciated
Both of the DS game endings have developed character arcs for two side characters (Linebeck/Ciela and Byrne/Zelda) and also end with a bittersweet goodbye to a world or characted that you've grown to love over the course of the game, in Anjean and the world of the Ocean King as a whole
Plus, Spirit Tracks has a little detail after the credits that nicely calls back to an earlier choice you make in the game
Before the final fight, Zelda will ask Link what he wants to do after "all of this" is over, and he can choose engineer, soldier, or "dunno"
Depending on your choice, the game ends with Zelda signing letters in her tower and hearing either your train whistle or the sound of you fighting in the castle, unless you chose "dunno", in which case she's simply content with the silence as she remembers your adventure together
It's a really nice touch and I wish some of the later games did a little more with that idea

Age of Calamity is last for sure. Hyrule Warriors would probably be mid tier
I cried during the ending of totk and the ending of the champion's ballad dlc in botw 😢
glad you put Majora's mask near the top.
The Dan Schnieder had me wheeze at work
aside from the ending... finding out zelda took the ultimate sacrifice in TOTK had my eyes watering hard. When he looks up after that last dragon tear collected. That was it.
Do you remember that episode from the cartoon where Zelda commands link to clean his room, she gave him in her castle? Goes the trying to shy away when confronted about it. Lmao!
the fact that wind waker ganondorf was probably just going to stop the eternal cycle is kinda crazy
I don't care what ANYONE says. Skyward Sword is AWESOME!!!
OMG THE MOTHER 3 MUSIC!!!!!!!!!
This video is great and all but I have to know
What is that warioworld discord server at 16:02
Because you are funny, you earned a subscriber!!!!!!
Ayo, there's no way Fi's Farewell isn't top three. Can't leave a like for only top 5.
Fi's farewell is not that emotional when the companion herself is terrible
Diddnt see no. 1 coming, and I got absolutely gut punched when I remembered.
Link's awakening (places below are all rather close).
the super paper mario chapter end music gets me every time.
Subbed. I loved this video.
Someone please tell me the song at @19:00 this is bugging me it's so nostalgic
I've loved Link's Awakening since the original. It has been my favorite since I was a little kid. The end always makes me cry.
did you know the bells are a hint at what's to come in majoras mask with the whole time mimic
gimmick not mimic
Totk lack of consequence for Zelda’s choice and Link literally losing his arm left a sour taste in my mouth that persists every time I watch or play it now
My first Zelda ending was in Ocarina of Time. Classic ending for a classic game.
Ooooh I don't know how I'll agree with this lmao. I love the idea of this video
Great video. Does anyone know the name of the song at around 17:51?
I knew it was going to be either twilight princess or links awakening. Both endings are just heartbreaking and will always stick with the people that experienced them back in their days
Bruh I’m so happy you brought up BOTW…. Ending left me feeling so empty 🥺😂
4:07 can someone tell me from where is this song? Thanks
I think this is Koopaseum from Mario & Luigi Partners in Time
@@matleb8491Thanks
links awakening was the first game i ever played. the remake came out on my birthday and made me fall in love all over again.
Nocturne music reference peak video
Your videos are very underrated, very funny. Subscribed :)
I agree that midna is the best companion but the king of red lions had the saddest goodbye. He literally kills himself right in front of link
"That land will not be Hyrule, it will be YOUR land"
And then they found a new land, colonized the natives, and called it "New Hyrule"
the super paper Mario music brings me back
i had the same experience with links awakening. I felt goosebumps while you describing it. holy shit
Seeing you talk about the final ending REALLY makes me want to see your thoughts on the Danganronpa series
