Messi is the Greatest of all time, there was never a debate.
If you are talking of passing ability, Messi, Verratti, Kroos, Iniesta are in the debate against Maradona, but Ronaldinho edges out with a margin as the king of passes.
Neymar Junior and Maradona have equal playmaking potential as Messi. But Messi edges them both with his goal scoring ability.
However, Johan Cruyff is the greatest playmaker of all time, only behind Ronaldinho in Passing ability.
When you discuss about to goals, Messi enters in the debate as well. But this time against Christiano Ronaldo. Messi still edges out in goals per game ratio.
Messi can't be compared to others, because he takes much more responsibility than others.
Messi delivers successfully more than others on his responsibility as well.
In very simple terms, Messi is both a genius in playmaking, and a genius in scoring.

Maradona was a monster, he dribbled players like they were cones in the field, his shot was astonishing and his pace was as if the devil himself was rioting against the box. But football isnt about atheticism, prowess and flare only isnt it? I mean we all love the flare and amazing feats (Maradona carrying Napoli solehadendly and to be honest every team he was in). This game is about knowing your way with the ball. Messi is seemingly able to do ANYTHING with a football. He scores lobb goals, power shots, in between legs shots, free kick shots. He dribbles players like the ball is sticked to his foot. His vision of the field is just unreal and he passses with such accuracy that it edges on surreality. In other words, Maradona was a greek mythology human figure. Messi is a god. Even without Maradonas ability to carry teams. Ok, lets make this clear. Maradona winning the league with Napoli is nothing close to even impossible. Go back and check the trend back then, ofcourse the bigger teams like milan, Juve dominated, but the title was much open to be won by many teams back then in Italy. It was not like today's where just hardly 2 or 3 teams compete for the title. Also the number of games were much lesser which makes it even more unpredictable.
If you still have doubt go and check the list of title winners around the time Maradona won the title with Napoli, you would find teams like Hellas verona and sampdoria winning it!
So Maradona winning it with Napoli os not something impossible. For the people in Naples it might have a nostalgia, but other than that nothing great!

It's a lot closer actually. Eras can't be compared.
I am Argentine, watched the 2 of them. Messi his whole career, Maradona his final years.
European football since the effects of the bosman rulling were established is all about 7 or 8 super clubs that hoard the best players of the planet in bulk, even if they don't use them in order to beat the competition.
    Look at Chelsea...
In Maradonas time, before the bosman rulling clubs were a lot more even and competitive. So on big clubs had a couple of great players but also regular ones in your own team, and the opposition was in average stronger.
Give Maradona the chance to play alongside lots of the best players in the world for 15 years vs Alaveses and rayos vallecanos and your stats will be a lot better.
Maradona faced brutal, career ending tackles all his career. Messi didn't. Talented players like Messi are protected by refs these days thanks to players like Maradona.
World cup qualifiers were a lot different. Hence Maradona played a lot less games on the national team. Messi has great stats, but padded specially on the last years thanks to the terrible friendly games Tapia, the AFA president, organized. They might as well play Sunday league teams.
Messis behaviour gives him the edge but maybe his family learnt from Maradonas case what to to manage his career properly.
Maradona was the first truly global sports superstar. You might also bring Pele but telecominications weren't as developed in the 50s/60s so he had less reach

If you are an average professional boxer and you fight againt 100 people in good shape that you meet walking on the street, does that make you better than someone that wins one single fight with Mike Tyson?
Maradona was playing against the best defender of all times. Messi was playing in Spain that is a league that is not known for its difending qualities.
When you play agains people that are always trying to brake your ankles (one even succeded ) is a bit more difficult than playing against people that are barely alloweed to touch you. You do not even have to go to touch Maradona. Pessi and Penaldo are not even better than R9.

I think Messi is better but the idea that it is just media that brings up comparisons is wrong. There are GENUINE comparisons. Nowadays Europe is undoubtedly more prestigious than South America. But back then a lot of those claims were actually just bias. Up until the turning point of football when the sport became more systematic, it was close. Before becoming Maradona was a senior player Argentinos Juniors were a relegation side. Immediately when Maradona debuted they became a powerhouse. Then he joined Boca who were struggling and established them as powerhouses again. Non-bias media had already proclaimed him the best player in the world multiple times. Another piece of context is before the Calciopoli scandal the Serie A was the best league in the world. And Maradona at Napoli was the best the league had ever seen. His time in LaLiga was criminally underrated. He didn’t win much similar to Messi in the latter stages of his Barca career, but was still the hardest player to go up against. Now let’s talk internationally. He only won one WC, but should have won more. Maradona was left out of the Argentina side that won their first ever WC, but was considered one of the best Argentinians in the world at 17. His spot was taken by an inferior player due to political reasons. People still talk about the hand of god without realizing in the 1982 WC Argentina was arguably the best team but was victim to extreme European bias (as where many South American giants) with some of the most clear decisions against them in history. In 1990 he arguably did better than Messi in 2014; both lost finals to Germany. But people accept Messi as the best player in the 2014 WC without seeing how scrappy his run to the final was. It was almost the exact same as England in the Euros this year. Meanwhile Maradona was truly cooking in 1990.

It's insane to think that you could take in consideration statistics, winning, awards since not only at the time the game was different it was much MUCH more position and defending focused, meanwhile today it's much more speed and attacking focused, today's game is much more similar to pelè's age game in brazil, and in brazil only, on the eye test it is a discussion but not as good as you make it, there are points that could go to messi, but they are not really comparing to maradona, he played in the best era of defending and in the hardest league of the time with the best defenses probably ever on average (not the best defense ever, but the league with, on average, the best defending ever) and could score imposaible goals just as good as messi's and even better goals, and it's crazy to say that awards and winnings are individual points to discuss, otherwise lautaro and alvarez are better than prime kane, and statistics kinda become meaningless in front of the context.
I don't know who is thebest between maradona, pelè, messi and pre injury ronaldo (the true ronaldo) and idon't think anyone does, but saying that there isn't a debate is crazy, and this comes from someone who grew up with the messi era, who loved messi so much that watched almost every game of his, who held him as the greatest of all time for quite a period, who never thought that messi vs ronaldo was even a debate, but to say that maradona and messi are not extremely close, and use these arguments to support the idea, shows me your tremendous bias and that you have a shallow understanding of the game over the different ages.
Don't take this offensively because it's not meant fo be an insult

i guess u need to watch full matches back in the days of Pele and Maradona to see how tough it was to play against teams. Every tackle they receive is easily a red card these days and they need to take at least 5 to 6 such tackles before the opponent gets even a yellow card. That is why it is easier for attackers now to play. It was to protect magical players after the tragic early retirement of Van Basten.
U can simply go watch on youtube the full match of 1970 world cup final that Pele played. he received a two footed challenge from the back on his legs by a Italy player the moment he beat him and the crazy thing is the referee could stop the physio from coming onto the field to treat Pele who was rolling in pain and not even a yellow card was issued. Likewise, when Gentile just kicked Maradona out of the 1982 WC with 23 fouls on him and still did not get a red card. Those were the type of treatment Maradona and Pele got which definitely reduced the output statwise. Messi definitely had a crazy stat boost at Barca because of the Spanish golden generation (that won everything at national level from 2008 to 2012). If you exclude his stats from Barca and used that of Argentina and PSG, he probably had something similar with Maradona. Both were generation talents of their own era and it is definitely disrespectful to claim it is not even close between Maradona and Messi.

Man, you’re making an argument about mainstream media making you believe things that aren’t true, but you’re in fact falling inside the trap yourself. Statistics never were and never will be the right way to compare players. It’s not about “how many” you do, it’s about WHAT you do, HOW you do it and in which CONTEXT. Maradona won the toughest competitions (not just the World Cup, but Serie A was the highest level of football at the time - higher than the Champions League) almost single-handed. Turning teams who don’t have a chance into winners. Messi always has been the cherry on top of teams who could easily win even without him. Technically they’re not even similar. Maradona was so much more creative and had a much wider variety of things he could do. If you compare stats, you’ll never get an accurate picture. Just as the Messi-Cristiano debate doesn’t exist, because yes, comparable stats, but Messi is far superior, same goes for Messi-Maradona. Messi has better stats, but Maradona was something else entirely. I haven’t really seen Pelé so I won’t comment, but in my lifetime, the only player who got somewhere close to Maradona was Ronaldo the phenomenon. Maradona though, is by any means the GOAT

On top of that, the 'toughness' argument is obviously ridiculous. Football these days is incredibly hard on players' bodies. The schedule is way more congested, and defenders still kick the shit out of your legs, so only the physically top percent of players can even have a career that totals the length of Messi's at Barcelona, let alone play at the level he played at for as long as he did.

This is an impossible comparison because football (or soccer) is a team sport. Imagine this hypothetical, how would had each player performed if you they were to switch teams and eras? Do you think Messi had won all the trophies he has won had he played for Napoli in the 80s? Spain during Messi’s prime was dominating the world without him, from 2008 to 2012. This Spain was based on Barcelona - 7 of the main players were from Barcelona. So, you can argue that the reason why Messi scored more goals, and won more trophies was because he was in a better team.
What if we just ignore all the trophies and focus on the way both players played - their assists, their dribbling, creativity, and impact on the game and team. Maradona had the flair of Ronaldinho, and maybe even more. Remember that no one has ever provided more goal contributions than Maradona in the 1986 WC, with one game less than the modern WC.
I am not saying that Maradona is better or the other way around, I am just questioning your criteria for deciding this.

Let's compare Maradona and Messi strengths:
    Maradona:
    - much more skillful passer of the ball. Maradona's back heel was incredible, so were his acrobatic passes.
    - physically more powerful than Messi relative to the surrounding players of their eras.
    - better with the outside of his boot. His trivela passes were rare but wonderfully executed with terrific back spin, his rabonas were wonderful too.
    Messi:
    - much more two footed than Maradona allowing him to score goals with his right foot far more effectively and easily. Maradona's right foot was barely ever used, altthough he was a master of the rabona and trivela so Diego never needed his weaker foot all that much.
Overall Maradona is arguably the better passer and Messi arguably the better scorer.
Comparing statistics is pointless to determine who is better because for stats to be actually comparable, they need to be from the same set of circumstances, and unfortunately that is not the case. Both Maradona and Messi have played under vastly different conditions and circumstances, including things like team formation, roster strength, on-field positions, and more.
Also eye test is stupid. Maradona's videos are mostly recoreded with a potato compared to what we have for Messi.

I think this video is weird because Messi and Maradona shouldn't be compared in the first place. I absoloutely love Lionel Messi and how he changed football forever with all his alien performances over the years but at the same time you can't compare him with the legend himself Diego Maradona, it's not about numbers or statistics or how much trophies a player won over the other because they are from 2 totally different periods of time. How would Messi do if we was in Maradona's shoes and how would Maradona do if he was in Messi's shoes? That's the real question; for me it's about the impact they have left on the world: Maradona was a true monster, in this video you said that the game has become more advanced and that's true if we're talking about the technical parts of football, but I'd say it was waaaaaaaay harder back then in some aspects. Maradona played 7 years for Napoli and he made this club win their first 2 Serie A trophies, allegedly nothing special until we take in account that Maradona played in the period when Serie A was the harshest football league and he had to play against so many football legends and arguably the best defenders of all time. I'm not saying that Napoli had trash players back then, they were good but not comparable to Platini's Juventus, Sacchi's Milan and the Inter of champions (I named the big 3 of Italy but there were other teams that were close to the level of these 3 I just named). Maradona was the sole player that could beat all this teams with his sheer effort alone, he was the superstar and he didn't play more because of injuries. Like I said earlier Messi had a spectacular career too, he made the 91 goals in a season record after all but he had a much easier time than Maradona in my opinion. Barcelona when Messi joined was much bigger and stronger than Napoli was at that time, with players like Ronaldihno, Puyol, Eto'o, Xavi, Iniesta etc.. Messi had much more room for maneuver, after all, he was Barcelona's biggest star and he truly was the best player of the world (still is), and with him came Suarez and Neymar; they conquered la Liga with their only rivals being Real Madrid. But how can we compare this with what Maradona had to go through? Extremely disrespectul, not only he carried Napoli alone against almost impossible to beat rivals (for Napoli) but he also had to play in tremendous field conditions (go look up yourself how the fields were back then, can't imagine how today's best players could play in those conditions). In the end I think we can't judge by simply putting together statistics and trophies, it would overshadow Maradona's greatness. Maradona is football and Messi is the best footballer that has ever played football.

Messi is clear bro,the only thing maradona had n made Messi to be on his shadow fr so long despite being the all round complete player was the wcup. After Messi's wcup triumph he buried that debate.Plus let's be honest here, this Napoli story thing is an overrated fairy tale story. The reality is Maradona is greatly considered an all time great hugely coz of his insane godly performance at the 86 Wcup. Otherwise he would not be in this debate were it not for his memorable wcup moments.Him lifting Napoli to that success would have meant nothing without his wcup n nobody would even be talking about it.What Maradona did in 86 is what Messi has been doing consistently week in week out, year in,year out for over 15 yrs playing at that consistent level which is crazy and why he is considered by many as the undisputed GOAT.Maradona was never that consistent n his longevity is nowhere any close to Messi's.Thats why he has very poor stats compared to the insane stats Messi has.Yes,his lack of consistency n longevity to do it for soo long coz he also lacked the discipline to do so.Therefore it has nothing to do with Messi having it easy like I have seen some clowns propagate in this comments sections, otherwise many other great players should have achieved the same stats n achievements he's had.Only Cr7 comes close to emulating what Messi has achieved even though the latter one is much more talented n complete than the former. So it's basically Messi's consistency, longevity n discipline that makes him have an edge over Maradona,n the stats, records, accolades n trophies won are there to back that fact.Messi is the GOAT, period.

Yes and people act like 1986 Argentina is a weak team is a joke for me. Their squad is extremely high quality. Players like Nestor Clausen, Ricardo Giusti and Ricardo Bochini were the pillars of Independiente who won the Copa Libertadores 1984 and then defeated Liverpool in the Intercontinental Cup.
Two midfielders Sergio Batista and Claudio Borghi are the key players of Argentinos Juniors, when this club won the Argentine championship for two consecutive years (1984, 1985), besides the Copa Libertadores title in 1985.
Enrique, Nery Pumpido and Oscar Ruggeri and River Plate won the Copa Libertadores in 1986, just a few months after the tournament in Mexico.
Jorge Valdano played for Real Madrid and won the La Liga 1985-1986 BEST foreign player.
