      Actually, that was Joe Namath. And he wasn't talking about Super Bowl titles for a player or team, he was talking about the entire conference. He won his SB a couple years after the NFL/AFL merger and at the time, the NFL teams thought they were they only true league and the AFL teams were second rate imitators. So after the Packers won the first 2 super bowls people started believing the hype that the AFL just wasn't as good as the NFL, and AFL teams started to "lose a lot of respect from everyone". So, when the Jets won SB3 it legitimized the AFL for the first time as worthy competition for the NFL. That's what he was describing.

    I'm glad Dan Fouts is being properly placed among the all time greats. He's an underrated pioneer IMHO. He and Air Coryell were paramount in making football the exciting, dynamic game it is today. He was throwing for almost 5000 yards in 1980 for the love of god, and the Chargers of that era were so much fun to watch.

    This was a great table of QB greats, we get to look into a past the younger generation truly can’t comprehend, times where the NFL was considered better broken because of Namath winning the third super bowl, Kurt Warner’s comeback on the cardinals taking them to a super bowl, John Elway crediting Jim Kelly for being allowed to audible, Fouts saying how he put John on his fantasy team when fantasy football first came to be and worrying about his health when he jumped over his bench. I think this was great and a great change of pace from what we’ve come from the norm. I’m used to seeing Elway whenever there’s a mention of great QB’s, and I was expecting the usual Montana, Farve, Manning, etc. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the NFL changed it up abit and put some other great QB’s on this table to give us a different experience.

    Two incredible stories. Staubach winning two SB's after serving in the Navy and not playing until he was 27 & Kurt Warner making the HOF after his path to the NFL. I remember watching how incredible Staubach was in college. Back then, the service teams, at least Navy and Army were still pretty good and competed against top college teams. Staubach could've played on any top college team. As far as I'm concerned, although I'm a life long Giants fan, he'll always be Broadway Joe to me! What a time it was back then for the AFL when Joe came along. I'm not sure what happens if the Jets don't win that Super Bowl. The fact they beat the Colts who were so good, I believe they only lost one game that season, made it even more special. I'd have like to hear the guys compare their private life stories just to hear some of Namath's!!!! Not many at the table wore a fur coat on the sidelines. I saw Namath play against the Giants at the Yale Bowl and we had seats relatively low and close to field level. He threw a laser pass to Rich Castor about thirty yards, about 6 feet off the ground just flicking his wrist. Incredible talent. Great video.

Take Fouts any day over MANY of the QB’s who had awesome teams and got their rings by just playing mistake free.

      I absolutely hate the Cowboys, but, of those quarterbacks Staubach would have been the one to benefit from the current rules the most. Staubach was one of the few quarterbacks of the 70s to consistently throw crossing routes and deep passes with accurate timing. Tarkenton was always late throwing the ball, and he would overthrow the receivers a lot. Staubach was accurate, and was one of the only qbs who would throw the ball before the receiver was open.

    There is no question that Roger Staubach is THE most underrated QB in NFL history. The documented record demonstrates that he is 1 of the Top 5 QB's in NFL history. Hall of Fame inductee,; 4 time NFL passing champion; 5 time NFC passing champion; 4 Super Bowl appearances in 8 years as a full-time starter; 2 time Super Bowl winner; MVP of Super Bowl 6; strong arm; accurate; mobile; clutch performer; tough as nails; the consummate leader; the greatest QB of the 70's; and he retired as the the NFL's all-time leader in passer rating. Staubach accomplished all of this after serving 4 years in the military and not becoming a full-time starter until he was 29 years old. IMO, if Staubach came into the league as a 22 year old rookie, the Cowboys would have had at least 1 more Lombardi Trophy and Roger would have been in the discussion as THE greatest QB in NFL history.

    • @johnre5342
      @johnre5342 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. Roger would have been in a few more championships. He would have been the qb to face the packers in the late 60s instead of Meredith and if the rules weren’t so tough on qbs he would have still been the qb on the early 80s teams that lost 3 straight nfc championships. Can you imagine if staubach played against Starr in the beginning of his career and finished it playing Montana……it’s no shame to lose to the Steelers in the Super Bowl. Brady wouldn’t have did good either against the Steelers in that era where you can body slam the qb.

    • @pjtheory
      @pjtheory 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I recently had a conversation with a young football fan who gushed over Tom Brady's ability to play into his mid-40's. I shook my head and told him that if Brady played in Staubach's era, he wouldn't have physically been able to play past his 35th birthday. Despite being tough as nails and mobile, Roger was battered (e.g., at least 10 concussions in his career, surgery on his throwing shoulder) to the point where he had to retire at the age of 38. It's important to note that at the time of his retirement, the football press raved about Staubach playing into his late 30's at a high level. In his last 2 seasons, he led the NFL in passer rating and retired as the NFL's all-time leader in passer rating.

    • @johnre5342
      @johnre5342 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pjtheory yeah that’s true. I remember in 1978 they changed the rules for defensive backs to open up the game a little. In staubachs last 2 years he had 2 of his best years as other qbs started throwing for 4000 yds like fouts and sipe. Qb stats reflect the era they played in. Not only would Brady have not lasted as long but his stats would have reflected the 1970 s era. If you hit 55 percent that was considered excellent. Staubach retired by the time the game started to open up. He caught the tail end of it in 78 and 79. In the 1970s the league avg was to throw a little more ints than tds. For example Bradshaw threw 212 tds and 210 tds which was ok at that time. Staubach threw 153 tds and 109 ints which he was way ahead of his time. I think only Unitas and Len Dawson had a similar ratio.

    Poor Jim Kelly, sitting there listening to other guys talk about finally winning the big one. Fouts never made it there, but getting there and losing four times in a row. On top of that, Jimmy Johnson didn't even consider 1992 against Buffalo as the Super Bowl. His SB came against SF and frankly, those were the two best teams in football at the time. Either one would have beaten the Bills. I come from a town that loves the Bills. It was dismal enough without their team losing. I've always been a Cowboy fan since 1973. IMO, Staubach is the greatest QB ever. I can't imagine if he'd have started in his early 20's, or been able to play now with all the rules protecting the QB and WR's. As much as the Bills lost, you have to give them credit for going four years in a row. They just weren't as good as several NFC teams.
