It starts to travel back about 1ft which leaves about 6 inches of where the ball landed on the receiver's hands and the line. I rest my case and I hope I don't hear about this lateral ever again. This needs to be addressed, before I say this, I generally liked this list and especially the format they used, no BS, just telling cool stories of some awesome plays, but I have one question. WHERE IS DEVIN HESTER’S KICKOFF RETURN TD IN SUPER BOWL 41? I know there are other snubs (Kearse catch SB 49, Julio catch SB 51) and I can understand why they’re not included, but this is absurd. I’m not even a bears fan, but how do you leave out a play in the biggest game that has happened only ONCE? To this day, no other Super Bowl has started better than Super Bowl 41 and despite the Colts being the favourites, that play made everyone think they had a chance. I get that ranking the top 100 plays is near impossible to get right, but this is not right. There is no argument that Devin Hester’s play did not deserve to be on this list.

Montana, rushed, but untouched throws like, 12 WHOLE YARDS away. Clark goes up and makes an uncontested catch. Wychek's lateral from the Music City Miracle probably travels further in the air.
      Meanwhile, Eli, against an undefeated team, has to break out of the grasp of someone who has a hold of his jersey. David Tyree is up against a perennial All-Pro who get a FULL SWING TO PUNCH THE BALL LOOSE, and he somehow PINS IT TO HIS HELMET AND SLIDES OFF THE DEFENDER TO THE GROUND until he's down while Harrison is still trying to whack at it. His strength is running with space to find holes and make cuts and power through arm tackles. He was not a back who plunged in like Jarome Bettis, nor was he a high flyer to leap over a pile like Tomlinson/Marcus Allen and so forth.
      If Lynch had run it, he is likely to have been stuffed. Then the Hawks blow their last time out and have 3rd down. They would have been forced to pass, as a failed run on 3rd would have been game over. You cannot spike it. You cannot line up for 4th down. You pass on third... and we get the same result, Butler pick.

  • @jerodgalle3831
    @jerodgalle3831 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Hawks fan here. Let me start by saying that I agree with the rest of the football world that the Hawks should have run it with Lynch. Had they done that, we'd be talking about back-to-back Super Bowl champion Seattle. However, let me briefly defend what happened on that fateful play (and then offer an alternative solution). Pete said after the game that he had a plan for using all 4 downs there in the red zone. In order to do that, since Seattle only had 1 timeout, they would have to throw the ball at least once. They ran on first down and got to the one yard line. Second down, Pete had his personnel on the field (3 WR's and 1 TE) and saw that NE had their goal line package out there. Meaning one-on-one coverage for his receivers, an ideal situation in that spot. I'm sure that he felt (much like anyone else watching the game) that this call would catch the Patriots by surprise. He took his chance with the matchup that he wanted, but obviously it didn't work out. If it had been completed, we would be talking about Pete being a genius for catching NE unaware. I don't completely disagree with them calling a pass in that spot. Where I draw issue is that particular play call. Why, if you're going to pass, would you throw toward the inside/middle of the field? If you're gonna pass, you throw to the boundary. Either a quick out, corner, or fade route. Something, anything, that puts the ball in a position where either the receiver gets it or nobody does. The middle of the field just invites something bad to happen (which it did). Again, I still think they should have run the ball (especially since there was only about 20-25 seconds on the clock when they snapped the ball). But yeah, any pass in that situation should be to the boundary areas to avoid the potential of an interception.

    I'm sorry folks the pass from Eli Manning to David Tyree in Super Bowl 42 was the greatest play in NFL history, no question about it. I'm stunned they put it at # 3. You will never ever see a play like it again. This play was unbelievable in so many ways and keep in mind this was in The Super Bowl with less than two minutes to go - Eli Manning escapes getting sacked, which was unbelievable, then Eli Manning then finds a way to throw the ball, which was unbelievable, then David Tyree jumps up to catch the ball and holds onto it against his helmet while being covered by Rodney Harrison, a terrific defender, which is an absolute miracle. The Immaculate Reception, a great play, cannot compare to this play from Eli Manning to David Tyree. If they put this play in a movie everybody would say this is impossible and could never happen and it did.
