Dude, the official may have launched in 2009, but I had mine in 04 or 05, it was an jailbreak one that everyone had, "Matrix". It had the logos and everything but it played burned CDs. Basically, official hardware and games may be waaaaay costly even today (PS4 is going strong with the R$ 1.300,00 price) but back in the day, there was always a way. Piracy is basically what created the game market over here, because the government never saw games as "culture" or anything worth a dime, but still jacked up the import prices; I remember when I was a kid, ps1 games went out at $5 and ps2 games later on by $10 or $15 Real depending on the game, but it was all pirate copies, there were the cheap ones where they even had the cover printed badly or with misprinted colors and there were good copies with even the CD stamp, still pirate tho. It took me till 2017 to discover that original ps2 cases came with a slot for the memory card inside. Another thing, since the official market ignored games and internet was dialed up (slow af), games were almost always spread by word of mouth, it happened with crash, final fantasy, GTA, God of war, shadow of the Colossus and many others. The console and games were easy enough to pirate, but the memory cards were expensive, I remember once they were being sold R$ 80,00 each around 2005-06, and later $20 when the PS3/x360 gen had come fully and pirating was not as easy nor that useful to sell (because they could ban your account and console), so now we have to deal with insane prices for both consoles and games. A lot of us moved on to steam to play most games because in there they have fairer prices and only buy consoles for the exclusives, basically. I'll give you an example, hollow knight is ± $30 for us, but in psn it's more than $60, that's double the price for having the same game digitally!! TLDR: it's rough, buddy.

there is still 3rd party companies that can fix it. May be pricey though. i remember my old 120GB ps3 kept getting yellow light. Sony fixed it for 130$. then it happened 4 months later. Just 1 month passed their warranty on repair. Same time the ps3 remodel (no slim) was 160GB and on sale for 100$. So i just went ahead and bought a new console. PS2 also sell cheap af on craigslist lol like 40$
This console is basically my SMT machine. It got Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga, Devil Summoner Raidou games, Persona 3 and 4, Maken X, and a lot more amazing JRPGs!
I worked at Block Buster Video when the PS2 came out. The night before, I let my brother and friend into the store as me and a co-worker unboxed the PS2 we got a day before it came out. We set it up, to test of course, and played it for a long time. The first two people to rent the PS2, never returned them. The policy was just to charge them the cost, and not late fees (no idea why). So those two guys got a PS2 on launch day, didn't wait in lines, and it only cost them the rental fee + cost. My brother worked at Kay Bee Toy Store, who botched the launch and pre-orders somehow. Kay Bee cancelled all preorders, so this lead to crazy angry customers who thought they had a PS2 waiting for them. Customers came in and asked if they had any to sell, they did, sold them, and then later the preorder customers came in to find out there preorder was cancelled and the PS2 already sold. No wonder both Kay Bee and Blockbuster are out of business now.

Brazilian here. Although the "official" release of the PS2 in Brazil was only in 2009, no one here was aware of it until the social media era. Brazilians had the PS2 ever since the official US launch, thanks to stores here and in Paraguay importing the NTSC consoles. My earlier memories of playing the PS2 was at cousin's house in 2003. Most of those pre-2009 PS2 sold here came chipped with modchips to play burned copies of games. Other thing i have to point out are the games. Back in the PS2 era, you just couldn't go to the store and buy games. After the cartridge era, stores stopped selling original games. No, no GCN or Xbox games here. PS2 games? Only PES/FIFA, some Lego Batman game, SOCOM, and maybe Manhunt (for some reason). Also, some PS2 games were banned by the gouvernament here, like GTA Vice City, for being too violent (2000's war on games era). If you really wanted good PS2 games, you had to go to the camelos. These street sellers would sell burned games for a few bucks. You had much greater variety of games there, even region exclusive games. These camelos introduced kids and adults to a plentora of games, genres and franchises you would never see in a big store on the TV (videogames ads here were only broadcasted in cable TV channels).
It's embarrassing, but a story people love for me to tell, but when they announced they were no longer repairing PS2's, I cried. Sure, I was smoking and emotional, but still, it was heart-breaking.

Yes, the PS2 was only released officially in 2009, but this "official release" practically didn't mattered. Stores had the north american imported version on their shelves since it's release on the US, the price didn't dropped after the official Brazilian release, while most gray market stores sold the imported version at half the price.
that Smackdown vs Raw 06 game's PSP functionality DID NOT allow you to load your save data from the game and let you play it on two consoles. I know for a fact it didn't. All it ACTUALLY did was unlock Jake 'The Snake' Roberts if save data from the PSP version was present. I actually had the game. That's all it did.

GTA3 was rated 18+ in Germany, not 16. The game can be made uncensored by switching the laguage of the console and game to English, same with Vice City. The PS4 rereleases are uncensored.

I'm from Brazil and got a PS2 for my birthday in 2006. By then, even without this "official" release, everybody had one. In July of 2009 I even had saved enough money to buy myself a PS3 and turns out the PS2 had not "officially" arrived yet. Crazy times. But seriously, up to the PS2 piracy was king. Because the consoles up to that generation could not really update their softwares once released it was quite easy for game stores to install third party chipsets that could read bootleg DVDs and pirate games where sold at arround R$15 (something around 8 dollars). That kind of died with the PS3 generation and software updates and online play, but the Xbox 360 still had quite a piracy market going. Not sure how but a lot of stores sold them capable of read bootleg disks and external HDDs full of games.
Oh jeez, and here I thought it was bad that they cut out Sweet Tooth's hospital rampage in the PS3 Twisted Metal. At least we still got the story, such as it was.

The Socom Navy SEALs fireteam bravo 2 game for PSP could link up with the Combined Assault game for PS2 to unlock objectives and influence the campaign story wise. Example: In a mission in Bravo you need to sneak into a old olympic stadium if you beat that level in Combined Assault the lights get turned off halfway through making it easier to sneak around. Likewise if you turn off the alarm system in Bravo, the motion sensors in Combined Assault become disabled.
The Brazil tax thing is crazy. In my senior year of high school (2003) I was good friends with an exchange student from Brazil. He bought a PS2 and dozens of games while he was there so he could bring them back. I was so dumb then, it never dawned on me that everywhere in the world wasn't like it was where I lived.
To be fair, half those record breaking sales probably came from people like me that had to replace theirs when it broke down out of nowhere every 2 years.

My PS2 model can't play PS1 games at all. Component cables would not output colors. As for the inability to play PS1 games, I found one day that I have to press the power button three times
Ps2s were already extremely popular in Brazil in 2009 and the console was widely available long before that. In 2009 is just the year it started being manufactured here so it could be sold for a lower price than before . 800 reais was not very expensive for a ps2 at that time..
DDR SuperNOVA was barely censored, but DDR SuperNOVA2 had a handful of censorship because background videos had cleavage. It seemed a little extreme for the amount of time said content was actually visible on screen. The arcade version (even in America) did not cut or alter any of this content because there is no arcade ratings board.

For the German censorship there was also a heavely discussion about Videogames at the time like with Mortal Combat in the US. Here it was CounterStrike, GTA and other "Killergames". Politics and Newspapers claimed them for (school)shootings. every now and than some politician get on this again (till today) when something like this happen every few years.

Brazil is weird when it comes to video games. I believe that the company Tectoy is still manufacturing and selling Sega Master Systems to this day!
2009 was when it was *officially* released over here, lol. But most gaming stores sold it since the original 2000 launch by just importining it non officially.

I'm from Brazil and i can safetly say, Yeah it sucks, it takes years to a console be launched here and when it lanches, you have to actually wait even more to buy it because the price of it is absurd, and more than half of the population of the country can't afford it. Especially when it comes to convertions, the dollar being much more valueble than the real, the price of a console (and its games) its the triple in here compared to the us.

Yes, the PS2 was only released officially in 2009, but this "official release" practically didn't mattered. Stores had the north american imported version on their shelves since it's release on the US, the price didn't dropped after the official Brazilian release, while most gray market stores sold the imported version at half the price.

that Smackdown vs Raw 06 game's PSP functionality DID NOT allow you to load your save data from the game and let you play it on two consoles. I know for a fact it didn't. All it ACTUALLY did was unlock Jake 'The Snake' Roberts if save data from the PSP version was present. I actually had the game. That's all it did.

GTA3 was rated 18+ in Germany, not 16. The game can be made uncensored by switching the laguage of the console and game to English, same with Vice City. The PS4 rereleases are uncensored.

I'm from Brazil and got a PS2 for my birthday in 2006. By then, even without this "official" release, everybody had one. In July of 2009 I even had saved enough money to buy myself a PS3 and turns out the PS2 had not "officially" arrived yet. Crazy times. But seriously, up to the PS2 piracy was king. Because the consoles up to that generation could not really update their softwares once released it was quite easy for game stores to install third party chipsets that could read bootleg DVDs and pirate games where sold at arround R$15 (something around 8 dollars). That kind of died with the PS3 generation and software updates and online play, but the Xbox 360 still had quite a piracy market going. Not sure how but a lot of stores sold them capable of read bootleg disks and external HDDs full of games.
Oh jeez, and here I thought it was bad that they cut out Sweet Tooth's hospital rampage in the PS3 Twisted Metal. At least we still got the story, such as it was.

The Socom Navy SEALs fireteam bravo 2 game for PSP could link up with the Combined Assault game for PS2 to unlock objectives and influence the campaign story wise.
Example:
In a mission in Bravo you need to sneak into a old olympic stadium if you beat that level in Combined Assault the lights get turned off halfway through making it easier to sneak around. Likewise if you turn off the alarm system in Bravo, the motion sensors in Combined Assault become disabled.

The Brazil tax thing is crazy. In my senior year of high school (2003) I was good friends with an exchange student from Brazil. He bought a PS2 and dozens of games while he was there so he could bring them back. I was so dumb then, it never dawned on me that everywhere in the world wasn't like it was where I lived.
To be fair, half those record breaking sales probably came from people like me that had to replace theirs when it broke down out of nowhere every 2 years.
The weird thing about the PSX? That was also the primary abbreviation for the first-gen Playstation, based on a discarded regional marketing name for it in North America.

My PS2 model can't play PS1 games at all. Component cables would not output colors. As for the inability to play PS1 games, I found one day that I have to press the power button three times

Ps2s were already extremely popular in Brazil in 2009 and the console was widely available long before that. In 2009 is just the year it started being manufactured here so it could be sold for a lower price than before . 800 reais was not very expensive for a ps2 at that time..
DDR SuperNOVA was barely censored, but DDR SuperNOVA2 had a handful of censorship because background videos had cleavage. It seemed a little extreme for the amount of time said content was actually visible on screen. The arcade version (even in America) did not cut or alter any of this content because there is no arcade ratings board.
