There are a couple of environments and enemies that would be INCREDIBLY hard to make work in modern graphics, honestly. Add to that the fact that literally everything else is spectacular as well, and I cannot recommend Threads of Fate highly enough. :)

Rhapsody! Okay, once again, you're speaking my language... figuratively. Threads of Fate - I think I gave this a rental back in the day, or maybe just played a demo. It didn't really speak to me, but I'm glad it exists. ---- Koudelka - I know I've given this shout-outs commenting before. I own it, and I need to play more of it, but finding time with all the other things going on is sometimes hard. I might even need to do emulation since memory cards for the PS1 are hard to come by nowadays even if I have the discs. ---- Guardian's Crusade - Its art style is very off-putting to me, and probably why I passed on it back then. ---- Azure Dreams - I honestly don't remember it, either I never played it or rented it and didn't get far enough for it to be memorable to me. Looking at your footage, I feel it's most likely the former. Concept is interesting, and worth a try at least. ---- Saiyuki - Journey West - Well, I know the basics of the story since it's the basis for several TV shows (Dragonball, Saiyuki, Monkey and many, many more), so it intrigues me to see a new take on it. ---- Dragonseeds - I remember this one, I think I either rented it or played a demo. I preferred the Monster Rancher (a.k.a. Monster Farm) games, but it was fun to try it out at least. ---- Thousand Arms - I remember seeing this game on shelves, but I didn't try it. Based on your footage, that is a mistake I hope to correct. It's going on my "to play" list. ---- The Granstream Saga - I don't think I played it, but yeah, I don't know anyone who hasn't seen that shower clip you closed the segment out with. ---- Legend of Legaia - I think I played the demo for this way too much because I could never find the game for purchase back when it was released. ---- The Legend of Dragoon - This is one that I passed over because of how many other good RPGs I was playing when this came out. It's one of my biggest regrets that I never played. It's been on my "To Play" list for decades.
Glad to see the Granstream Saga on this list, as I was going to mention it had it not been included. It was one of the first RPGs I played on the PS1, but my original disc for it was all scratched up so it didn't work all that well at some point. Definitely a game I want to fully play through one day!
Literally the first 1 is the 1 I've been searching for FOR YEARS,. Had it in my childhood n I'm still poor n about to download it n play it on the emulator. Thank you , I thought I would never find it but never gave up hope
3:57 Finally find the game I was wondering about, I saw it as a kid as my aunt played it. I confused it with another game but when I realised that other game wasn't this I was lost to what this game was. Good to finally know. Thanks
Guardian's Crusade was the first RPG that I finished playing in PlayStation. I love the Legend of Dragoon for its interactive attack, alternative to my Final Fantasy series.
Grandstream Saga was pretty exciting when it was new. Memory is very hazy, but I remember being so excited to see what RPGs will offer on the cutting edge PlayStation.
I have legend of dragoon on my PS5 it was in my childhood along with the humble and beautiful chrono cross so it has a special place in my heart. The empire part is literally just a small part of it
I played most of these, and I think Azure Dreams was the one I spent the most time on. Used to play every Sunday evening as a post weekend wind down, and did it for over a year. No clue how many hours I put in, but I think I tried a run with just about every monster available. Also one game I've not seen mentioned for a long time is Vandal Hearts, it did reasonably well back in the day and had a few ports and a sequel or two, but I've not heard or seen anything about it for ages
Tomba!, Tomba! 2: The Evil Swine Return, and Brave Fencer Musashi are other great PS1 RPGs. I thought I’d give them a mention - they’re very unique. I’ve only played Tomba 2 all the way through, but only very little of Tomba and Brave Fencer Musashi, but those three games are pretty good.
So glad you had Legend of Legaia on the list. Its my favorite game of all time. The combat system is unique and amazing, its like a fighting game RPG, and the game is just so much fun. At a time that FF7 was renown for its "Summon Animations" Legaia was a strong contender to beat it. I would put it at the top of the list of the best RPGs of all time.
Legend of Legaia!!! You found it!!! I've been looking for this for so long. I used to sneak out of bed and play it all night until my dad caught me lol.
Slowly getting through my PS1 back catalogue. Guardian's Knight now is so awesome, my 12 year old self would of loved it around 97. Threads of Fate I only have Gameboy Color cart of, although I heard big differences between both (besides graphics obviously). Threads of Fate/Arc Lad 2 I'm also in middle of...I have to stop this playing 4 games concurrently thing!! It blows my mind how many good RPGs PS1 had that I had no clue back in the day though, great vids like this bring it to everyones attention too!
Threads of Fate is the first and last game I played in PS1. Now Today; we got tons of remastered PS1 games such as FFVIII, Chrono Cross and the upcoming remastered Suikoden I and II. Why not remaster the Threads of Fate as well. If that's happened, going to get a copy!
The King's Field trilogy from From Software, which the first game was also the first RPG on PS1, are underrated and wonderful gems despite their austerity.
I have been looking for the game I played on a demo disk way back when I was a kid. this turned out to be thread's of Faye but I could never find the name of the game for many many years, so thank you for unlocking my childhood memories with this video
Loved Threads of Fate. Nice characters, story and catchy ost. My favourite is Another Chance, it fills me with determination. Saiyuki - Journey West is a game genre I don't play much but I that looks so good, including the lore, so I am willing to play it.
Legend of Legaia, Star Ocean 2, Threads of Fate, Breath of Fire 3, Thousand Arms, Jade Cocoon, Brave Fencer Musashi, and Legend of Dragoon are easily up with FF7 for epicness.
Ah, OG PlayStation and it's RPGs was a delight. A bit of a shame that the N64 didn't get at least some of these; PlayStation hogged them all (I believe many also appeared on Saturn but as to whether they released outside of Japan...). Well I can already tell from the summary that I own and have played one of these RPGs, Legend of Dragoon, but I look forward to hearing of other PlayStation RPGs worth keeping an eye out for. 0:20 - Threads of Fate looks pretty cool and "looks it up on Wikipedia" it didn't release in PAL territories. Shame but unsurprising. You do great and balanced coverage of the games included in your videos but it might be worth mentioning what territories the game's released in. 4:10 - I was not expecting those visuals. They certainly stand out and the whole world is vivid with colour. The Baby mechanic sounds interesting and this game did release in PAL territories; one to keep in mind then. 11:50 - The smooth transition to the 2D artwork is amazing. Overall, Thousand Arms combination of 3D and 2D is really impressive to look at. 17:32 - Plenty of fond memories of Legend of Dragoon, though more so watching my eldest brother play. The immediate comparison I have with the timing of the button presses is Paper Mario funny enough. Always happy to hear folks promote this game.
Dragon seeds was the shit. Still have the physical copy. Always went with Saurians, and going to the forest to find special dragons from different save data on your memory card was always fun.

@@thatvideogamesshow Also perhaps the best western rpg never released, BALDUR'S GATE for PS1! There are some minor glitches in the prototype(some unecessary shop items are greyed/cause crashes) but it is fully completable to the end! Available for free download now.
and Magic Castle ! A 3d rogue like rpg in the vein of Pixel Dungeon, but on the PS1! Just got an English patch!
These were the games of my youth. I never played Final Fantasy 7, 8 or 9 when I was kid, but I played almost all the games in this video! My favorites were Suikoden II and Breath of Fire III. Awesome video!
Threads of Fate and Grandstream Saga were fairly obscure; nice to see them mentioned.
Okay, once again, you're speaking my language... figuratively.
Threads of Fate - I think I gave this a rental back in the day, or maybe just played a demo. It didn't really speak to me, but I'm glad it exists.
----
Koudelka - I know I've given this shout-outs commenting before. I own it, and I need to play more of it, but finding time with all the other things going on is sometimes hard. I might even need to do emulation since memory cards for the PS1 are hard to come by nowadays even if I have the discs.
----
Guardian's Crusade - Its art style is very off-putting to me, and probably why I passed on it back then.
----
Azure Dreams - I honestly don't remember it, either I never played it or rented it and didn't get far enough for it to be memorable to me. Looking at your footage, I feel it's most likely the former. Concept is interesting, and worth a try at least.
----
Saiyuki - Journey West - Well, I know the basics of the story since it's the basis for several TV shows (Dragonball, Saiyuki, Monkey and many, many more), so it intrigues me to see a new take on it.
----
Dragonseeds - I remember this one, I think I either rented it or played a demo. I preferred the Monster Rancher (a.k.a. Monster Farm) games, but it was fun to try it out at least.
----
Thousand Arms - I remember seeing this game on shelves, but I didn't try it. Based on your footage, that is a mistake I hope to correct. It's going on my "to play" list.
----
The Granstream Saga - I don't think I played it, but yeah, I don't know anyone who hasn't seen that shower clip you closed the segment out with.
----
Legend of Legaia - I think I played the demo for this way too much because I could never find the game for purchase back when it was released.
----
The Legend of Dragoon - This is one that I passed over because of how many other good RPGs I was playing when this came out. It's one of my biggest regrets that I never played. It's been on my "To Play" list for decades.
Azure Dreams was a great game. Dragon Seeds was actually pretty fun. Thousand Arms was...interesting.
PS1 was truly the ultimate JRPG console for us Gaijin that can’t read Japanese
Out of those I played Koudelka and Legend of Dragoon and I liked both, they are among my favorite RPGs on the system.
Two solid RPGs!
Glad to see the Granstream Saga on this list, as I was going to mention it had it not been included. It was one of the first RPGs I played on the PS1, but my original disc for it was all scratched up so it didn't work all that well at some point. Definitely a game I want to fully play through one day!
Azure Dreams gets my vote, played it through several times. It's worth a few bob, too!
Literally the first 1 is the 1 I've been searching for FOR YEARS,. Had it in my childhood n I'm still poor n about to download it n play it on the emulator. Thank you , I thought I would never find it but never gave up hope
ps1 JRPGs are the best ever.
there my favorite of all time.
I’ll second that!
Threads of fate baby
My first ever action rpg i have played as a child, one that for once isnt turn based
Loved the story too
3:57 Finally find the game I was wondering about, I saw it as a kid as my aunt played it. I confused it with another game but when I realised that other game wasn't this I was lost to what this game was. Good to finally know. Thanks
Glad the video was helpful!
Guardian's Crusade was the first RPG that I finished playing in PlayStation. I love the Legend of Dragoon for its interactive attack, alternative to my Final Fantasy series.
Such awesome games!
wow so many memories! Saiyuki is awesome and Legend of Dragoon is one of my all time favorites. I have yet to play a lot from this list.
The empire part is literally just a small part of it
This is a nice list of RPGs, as an RPG fan i can say that i played almost all of them. My recommendations are Legend of Legaia and Thousand Arms.
Clean and clear and easy to understand I appreciate this kind of content
Ps1, all the nostalgia hit me. Team buddies (most fav), BoF 3, Sheep Dog n Wolf.
Threads of Fate also has an amazing soundtrack.
I love it!
Somehow, I knew Khoudelka and Legend of Dragoon would be on this list!
And they were, suitably, the opener and closer.
I remember threads of fate. I loved that game when I was younger. To bad they never followed it up with a sequel.
Rip to the original writer of legend of legaia, it was a tragedy what his higher ups did to him
So glad you had Legend of Legaia on the list.
Omg I've been trying to remember the title for Threads of Fate for literally weeks now! Y'all saved me!
Can't WAIT to see part 2 of this video, greetings from México
Thanks Hector! Greetings from Wales 🙂
Legend of Legaia!!! You found it!!! I've been looking for this for so long. I used to sneak out of bed and play it all night until my dad caught me lol.
I clicked on this video because I hoped it'd mention Azure Dreams! And it did!
Damn, Threads of fate combat was pretty damn advanced for a ps1 game
Love Azure Dreams, great to see this in the list, hidden gem of a game, which it had a remaster on ps5
Same here, would love to see it make a comeback!
Ty so much for the vid my dude, always enjoying them, continue being awesome!
Thanks for watching man 🙂
this is a very well put together video of some obscure RPGs. Well Done sir. :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
The King's Field trilogy from From Software, which the first game was also the first RPG on PS1, are underrated and wonderful gems despite their austerity.
I’ll have to add it for part 2 🙂
Legend of dragoon was my first RPG that I completed and it was beautifully brilliant.
Such a great rpg!
I have been looking for the game I played on a demo disk way back when I was a kid. this turned out to be thread's of Faye but I could never find the name of the game for many many years, so thank you for unlocking my childhood memories with this video
Glad the video was helpful!
Saiyuki has an incredible opening video with the catchiest theme song, it's got a delightfully corny 90's anime feel.
Loved Threads of Fate. Nice characters, story and catchy ost. My favourite is Another Chance, it fills me with determination.
Saiyuki - Journey West is a game genre I don't play much but I that looks so good, including the lore, so I am willing to play it.
Yay! Finally Dragon Seeds is included in the list!!
Legend of Dragoon is an all time favourite for me
Such a strong start to the video, Threads of Fate was super good! My brother got a girlfriend that introduced this game to us.
Also, Legend of Legaia, Legend of Dragoon and Azure dreams need a remake!
Dragon seeds was the shit. Still have the physical copy. Always went with Saurians, and going to the forest to find special dragons from different save data on your memory card was always fun.
Dragonseeds looks awesome. Would 100% have played this back in the day if I'd have known about it.
