  • In this video we investigate the strange noise coming from our Land Rover Discovery 4 SDV6 3.0L Diesel engine, it turns out to be the front fan belt / drive belt tensioner. We have a go at working out how to remove the old one and fit the new one. This is the same on the Range Rover Sport with the 3 litre Diesel engine.

Thanks again, got the job done today. Drove home with the windows open to hear the engine purring away in silence. Interestingly, the bearing on mine (in the black runner) was fine, it was the spring loaded section that had separated and was the issue.

Great video. Thanks guys. Thank you also for showing the difference between the different “size” tensioners. I have a question though. I am looking for a new tensioner (not yet ready to get original part). The problem though is that the width of the actual pulley on my LR disco 4 is 29mm. The only one I can get is one with a width of 31 mm. I don’t know if there was an upgrade and/or if it matter of I put the on on with the 31mm. It would be great if you guys can let me know what the size of yours is. I know, it means measuring with a vernier, but it would help greatly. If you can’t help, thanks for the very informative videos.

Thank you for this video. It's not necessary to undo the rigid air pipe, there is enough room to slide the souple one under it. It's also easier to remove the air box before to unscrew the fan (that gives more room too). The most difficult part of the job for me was to refit the belt, reused as quite new but not as souple as a new one.
I have a question : Did you ever replaced (when not too late !) only the ball bearing (6302RS) like on 300 Tdi engines ?
    Thanks in advance.

Am I correct in saying that the little black pin/ tiny bit of plastic stays in the bottom on the new tensioner? 🤔
Just a bolt on plug and play tensioner?
I'll be tackling this over the coming days as mine is vibrating a fair bit.

great vid but never put bolts in dry !
when i first started in a workshop some thirty years ago the owner of the coach company who was also the chief mechanic said " lad " always put some oil or grease on the bolt threads,it may be you that has to undo it next time !!

    • @L663
      @L663  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

always an odd one as some people put threadlock on... to stop them coming undone ! more or less friction... take your choice ?

Its a lot of car for the money as prices have dropped. As ever get the best you can afford as engines are expensive to replace.

    • @davidhuett3579

I know of a lot of people who do this, but it's NOT considered good 'engineering' practice.
      Think about it.
The reason that a bolt locks is due to the 'friction' that is applied to both surfaces of the bolt and nut when tightened.
If one puts any lubricant on the thread (other than anti-seize) it compromises the integrity of the friction lock which in turn, makes it easier for the bolt to come undone.
Now, you might say ... 'well that's what I want' ... the bolt to come undone without a lot of effort.
That sounds good in theory ... but do you want bolts coming undone by themselves?
I've heard of caravaners using grease on their wheel nuts only to find the wheels departing from their vans whilst in transit.😬
Back to the video ... great video as usual guys.
Just one thing ... you were going to put a link to the couple of laser cut fan spanners?
