      @@L663 The rear, HPI, belt should be changed at the same time as cam belt on the front of the engine. The pump on the 3.0L needs to be timed, unlike that on the older 2.7L engine. I wouldn't wish to be in the outside lane of a motorway when it fails. The engine will stop immediately, you will loose power steering, and the brake servo will begin to give out as the vacuum pump stops as well. If you haven't maintained the car properly, ie not changed this belt then any responsible break down service will charge you for the recovery.

    As has been previously said many times, this is an excellent, practical video, showing step by step how to tackle this job, which to be honest, I would not of even considered to attempt before seeing this.
    What is your opinion on someway locking the crankshaft be at the front pulley as an alternative to locking the flywheel, in my case it is the first timing belt change at 112k.Thanks again to both of you for taking the time to make this video.

    • @L663
      @L663  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did look at this but the front crank wheel is not keyed onto the crank - its just on a taper so it could be put on at any angle. You can lock the crank in position but all you are doing is recording the position of the stretched belt you are replacing... not resetting to factory original - to do this the only way is to lock the crank !

    • @L663
      @L663  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi - thanks for the praise ! We are not trained mechanics as such ( i have a degree in Engineering ) but its good to know the video helps. Removing the starter motor is not 100% essential - it turned out on our car that when we locked the cams in place the crack lock tool dropped straight in - proving that if we had not locked the crank the timing would be fine. The side issue is that you need to make sure the crank does not move if you go for this method !

    I noticed you had trouble lining up the locking pins another rotating the engine. I’m having the same issue. Would you say the locking pin kit is machined to the wrong size slightly. Surely something like a six inch nail would do the same job.
    Do you know the precise distance the pin has to go through the cam hole to lock it sufficiently?

      Please explain.
      Are you saying that the rear belt on an SDV6 is quite 'do-able' by the average mechanically inclined .. non-mechanic without having to take the body off. Have you done it or is this something you have heard?

      @@davidhuett3579 You don't need to raise the body to do the rear belt, I think people just say that because they don't like doing them.
      Discovery 3/4 and RRS can be a bit tricky as access is limited but usually take about 2 hours to change.
      On the new discovery and RRS from 2014-onwards it is quite a bit easier as there is plenty of access once scuttle is removed and can be done in an hour.
      On the older models I think someone of average ability may find it tricky with putting the tensioner in its correct position and also removing the timing cover is a pain.
      On newer models the access makes it much easier for even a novice to attempt.
      **just a little disclaimer, I do work at JLR so I have gotten used to doing a majority of things, so my thinking of 'easy' may be warped.

      @@arsenalftw1 thanks for that info .. always good to hear from those who work for JLR.
      I'm assuming that you're not in the US and you are referring to a 3.0L SDV6.?
