Lizard Queen owner here. The bright tinny sound is coming from the buffer in the Jeff Archer. I verified with my Tumnus deluxe and Lizard Queen. Cycling the defeatable buffer takes one from the harshness you hear to a much nicer sound as it was designed to produce. Like many fuzzes, it doesn't play well with buffers.

@@Thrashcandy yes I would. Just like you would a fuzz face. Circuits like fuzz face and this pedal are very sensitive to the impedance of what is connected to the input. It wants to see the guitar pickups.
Why does it cost so much? Why do all your effects cost so much? I'll be honest with you- if I could afford anything you make- I would own it, all of it- but I can't. If you're not a gigging musician, and I would say a fairly successful one, it's extremely difficult to pay the prices you guys ask.

We tend to design pretty complicated circuits with quite substantial component counts. We aim to use higher grade components and parts through those designs. And, on top of that, we manufacture and operate out of the United Kingdom.
Dear lord that lizard fuzz is taking my head off. I wonder if it wants to see an unbuffered high impedance signal directly from your pickups, and not at the end of a pedal chain that might have buffers?
The Jeff Archer came about in 2019 or so when Jeff Beck wanted to retire his actual Klon from touring. They originally did a limited hand numbered run with NOS components (my dad spoke to the head dude at J Rockett about it before ordering one). Then at some point they decided to make it more readily available with different, more attainable diodes, which you can buy now. Hope this gives some insight.

You only have to do that with certain fuzz circuits- and this isn't one of them. Generally speaking- not always but usually- if it has a tone control on it- it doesn't need to be first in line. This pedal is thin and harsh- I returned mine- only JHS pedal I've ever disliked. I think maybe they got so caught up in the look of the thing, making sure it fit in with the EHX theme- that they sacrificed time working on the way it sounds. The whole thing comes off as a gimmick to a large degree- imo. In reality I could care less about whether it looks like a EHX pedal or whether Mike had anything to do with it or any of that- I just wanted a good octave fuzz, and this aint it.
@@stoneysdead689 As far as I understand it, and I'm a pleb so forgive if this is wrong, the placement of fuzz is dependent on number of transistors. I.e a two transistor fuzz needs to be up front(like a fuzz face) and a 4 transistor is more flexible (like a big muff.) as far as I can tell, this a 3 transistor topology (similar to a tone bender) which typically is less stable than that of a big muff or similar. So it would most likely benefit from placement in my idiot-level research. Hopefully jhs will do a video on it and clear it up. The other thing is that octave effects typically need the cleanest signal possible for tracking or doubling accurately. I do not own one and I'm not an engineer, so please take with a grain of salt.

@@stoneysdead689 100% this pedal has to be first in the chain if you are using otjer pedals that are not true bypass, if they are true bypass that you can have the lizard after them it after them, as long as they are bypasseed. Especially if you want to make it interact with you guitars volume and tone pots.
The ultimate Klon clone (imo) is the Tumnus Deluxe, for one reason… it’s one of the only ones that has a 3 band EQ and a soft/hard clipping toggle, giving you WAY more tonal options than most standard Klon clones. It’s epic.
I got my Lizard Queen today. It’s crazy loud. You need to run volume around 9 o’clock for best results. I went and checked the JHS video when they dropped the pedal and Josh also was running it at about 9 o’clock for his demo. Not sure why they made it so loud, but that’s what seems to be the case.
A good test of any pedal is "am I coming up with new riffs". I had this with an SL drive recently and had to buy it. I can see Pete really getting inspired by the tone.
Actually, overdriving your DI channel can sound awesome - that's how the song Black Dog was recorded, along with tons of other Zepplin tunes. They used an 1176 compressor to overdrive a Neve preamp on their desk.

I’ll reserve judgement on the Lizard Queen until I play one, I’ve heard mixed reviews on it. I wanted to get an octave fuzz that lets you dial in the octave like this has but not sure I like the tone of this. (Yes they should’ve had it first) but even Josh’s video of it, I wasn’t really digging the tone except for that broken amp sound which I like sometimes but not all the time
Listen, I love the Captain. Love this channel and I've been watching for years. ...but I've never seen so much finger dancing on a pedal's knobs while changing so little. So many different ways he could tweak it but he moves one knob forward 4 degrees then another one back 5 degrees, then goes back and puts the original knob exactly where it started, then simply taps the other two knobs without turning them at all. This makes me nuts!

Kind of unrelated, but maybe someone here can help me as I’m kind of going crazy lol I just upgraded my noname chinese 2x12 to basically a pair of Matamp 2x12s and the difference is kind of disappointing. My chinese cab sounds so clear and studio like, and the new ones with ''real'' speakers almost sound fake, like a small practice amp kind of tone, and also kind of distant. any ideas at all? the new cabs are also huge 2x12s so maybe that has something to do with it? I had an Emperor 2x12 with V30s and same issue. Using an Orange CR120 so maybe thats it ?
Yeah, sometimes more famous is not always better, specially when you got used to the right way to dial your sound with your previous cab. Matamps are notoriously finnicky at lower volumes also, they'll probably only start to sound great when you get to "neighbours will call the cops" levels of volume.
@@C0nnie You can try to overdrive the preamp with a tube screamer or a Klon (Clone ffs). See if you like the sound. Otherwise, not much to do, use those cabs for live events and at home you can try some more tameable.
The truth is that ppl are often disappointed when they go buy what they consider "real speakers" because they find out that guitar is supposed to be focused in the midrange. Cheaper speakers will often sound much fuller, rounder- but this is not good in a mix. It sounds great sitting in your bedroom but- you put that tone in a band context and all the sudden you disappear- you can't be heard, and you're stepping all over the bass line. Where as a good cab would have you focused in that perfect midrange niche. If I were you I would try the cab in a band setting - see how it sounds when you're playing with others.

You can't answer a question of "is there a superhero with a beard?" with supervillains or heroes with moustaches. Bishop I will give you. Luke Cage's most "on-model" version is without a beard, so I wouldn't count him.

Graviton is a villain. Mr Fantastic has no beard far more frequently than he has one. Odin, Volstagg and Fandral are supporting characters in a superhero comic, not superheroes themselves. Warlord is a different genre entirely.

Origin sounds awesome, but you'd need two to get full use out of them. Wish it was a double pedal. The Archer, is great, but that's a hefty price for a single pedal. The Lizard Queen sounds crap on it's own, great in a band mix.
I have one and found that it does not care for a buffered signal and works best at the beginning of your signal chain. I believe where they have this placed in the chain of the video is having an effect.

I'm going to go ahead and say what everyone I've seen play the Lizard Queen wants to say but seems afraid to- it sounds awful. I love JHS pedals- I own many, and this is the first one I've ever disliked even a little- but I hate this thing man, I sent mine back. It's thin, super harsh and overly bright, and I can't believe JHS signed off on this thing and let it go out the door. I think Josh and Daniel got so caught up in their little role-playing fantasy and making a pedal with Mike Mathews that they dropped the ball on the most important part- how it sounds.
Modern Amplifiers made in Asia, where the cost of production and parts is incredibly low. These pedals are built in the setting $4000-5000 US made amps are.

You kinda missed the point with the lizard. You basically have to crank the volume on the pedal to have a balanced tone. With every EHX pedal it is the same. The more volume the more bass there is.
Pete! My ears are baseline calibrated to you plugged into the Friedman little sister. Today the amber light is out on the little blue amp and your cable has been high jacked by another. Please fix this obvious oversight .

It is a silicon fuzz. It doesn't have input impedance requirements.

Is it really though? I mean that's what it costs- I get that but- is it "worth" that- I highly doubt it.
Origin sounds awesome, but you'd need two to get full use out of them. Wish it was a double pedal. The Archer, is great, but that's a hefty price for a single pedal. The Lizard Queen sounds crap on it's own, great in a band mix.

Sound like the Lizard Queen pedal is broken . Or is it just me who does not like the tone ?
I have one and found that it does not care for a buffered signal and works best at the beginning of your signal chain. I believe where they have this placed in the chain of the video is having an effect.

Agreed, this sounds nothing like my Lizard Queen. Not hard to dial in, there are great tones everywhere on this pedal... they need to revisit it.

I'm going to go ahead and say what everyone I've seen play the Lizard Queen wants to say but seems afraid to- it sounds awful. I love JHS pedals- I own many, and this is the first one I've ever disliked even a little- but I hate this thing man, I sent mine back. It's thin, super harsh and overly bright, and I can't believe JHS signed off on this thing and let it go out the door. I think Josh and Daniel got so caught up in their little role-playing fantasy and making a pedal with Mike Mathews that they dropped the ball on the most important part- how it sounds.
not the pedal's fault - it needs to see an unbuffered signal. Shocking these two didn't figure that out. wtf

You kinda missed the point with the lizard. You basically have to crank the volume on the pedal to have a balanced tone. With every EHX pedal it is the same. The more volume the more bass there is.
Pete! My ears are baseline calibrated to you plugged into the Friedman little sister. Today the amber light is out on the little blue amp and your cable has been high jacked by another. Please fix this obvious oversight .
Almost got a Lizard Queen based on the positive reviews but from here it sounds like crap to me and would not be something I would use. Thanks for being honest.
