I have been drooling for the blues breaker for years but the old pedals had just gotten too expensive. I was so excited that I just bought the whole set from Andertons! I got all 4 for the half the price of what original blues breakers are going for here in the US! Love you guys! Andertons is becoming my go to shop for gear. Doesn't matter that you guys are across the pond from me. The Andertons crew feels like family. So when I buy from you I'm supporting friends. Thank you. :)
Isn't this the best review of pedals in 2023? Seeing The Captain and Pete being so excited is just amazing and impressive. So cool guys, loving what and how you do your videos.
Back in 1991 I was doing demo clinics for Yamaha Australia who also distributed Marshall here, and for the release of the JCM900 series, we had Geoff Whitehorn join us for a national clinic tour. I was lucky enough to travel around with that gentleman and hear him play every night! He had so many great stories about working with Paul Rodgers and Bad Company and various others. Fantastic player and all round great guy, lovely to hear him mentioned!
@@thebadbeatbetty it’s based on a jcm800 so that style of distortion. If you wanted a pedal then probably the JHS angry Charlie or the Andy Timmons @. They’re both variants but there’s loads - even down to one of the Amazon basics pedals which tried ripping it off 😂 I don’t think any of them had an fx loop though
Awesome! Owned a Shredmaster in the 90's. Used it for playing Metal, Blues, Hard Rock, etc. Very versatile pedal. Sold it 10 years after. Regretted it, but not Don't regret it anymore because it's back!!!🤘😎
I've still got my original Guv'nor (and box!), was a mainstay on my pedalboard for many years along with a tube screamer. Glad to see they have reissued it.
I love my Guv’nor. I’m so glad that other guitarists are going to be able to share the joy of its tone - as you said a well overdue reissue. One thing I’m happy to hear is they’ve changed the jacks. They were always a weak point. About the only one thing that wasn’t built like a tank.
I paid £54 for a Blues Breaker in 93. Went to a Marshall evening '93 and still have a signed poster from Jim, saw Geoff Whitehorn with Paul Rogers at Newcastle city hall, he is one hell of a player...get him on.
Just pre ordered the Shredmaster. Friend of mine had one back in the 90’s and i loved it. Was already out of circulation by then. Been waiting for this reissue for a long time.
On the Blues Breaker, once you got the settings equal, those two are the closest I have EVER heard on two pedals. Impressive demo. You just sold a ton of those, I hope!
Also @Captain - remember walking into the shop in 91/92 and the extent of the pedal cabinet was more or less the glass fronted till/bench that was on the left as you walked in. From whence some kind dude produced aforementioned Guv'nor. Also no test rooms in the back! Ohno! You had to bring your best chops and get plugged into an amp in the middle of the shop. What a bloody brilliant place Andertons has always been.
I've got an original Bluesbreaker, can't wait to compare them. Been shopping for a Guv'nor but got 3 in a row with damage so now I can just get the reissue thankfully 🙂
I had a Danelectro Daddy-O, a Guv’nor clone, as my only pedal for most of the aughts. A Tele into a Daddy-O into a HRD was it for me. Might have to pick one of these up to compare.
So happy to see these re-issued. Will get a bluesbreaker soon. I guess we'll see more A/B reviews soon where some people will insist that the old one is better because it has ' vintage mojo' 😉
Not at all. Having owned one from new, I'm glad the new ones have different jacks - the old ones were crap. Also, the old ones were a tad inconsistent - I've owned several over the years, but I never got a better sounding one than my first-batch UK made example.
I love 1992 shred master blues break circuit pedal every year I think about it and I 100% love it. I’m not even old but it’s like of course John Mayer and he’s so awesome tone ❤❤
There’s so many pedals that do the exact thing. Best not to go crazy over yet, another overdrive. We are in the golden age of pedals from $20-$50 to $100+, there’s an option for everyone with multiple options which is great.
Perfect description of a larger than life character Geoff Whitehorn… he was old school Brit player steeped in high level influences… a truly great player. ❤
I bought new the pearl cho2 many years ago and still love it, eighties I think. I have always used it very subtly, just a shimmer under the tone of the amp.
Very faithful recreations. They sound great. And yes, some components values can drift over time and cause some differences but should be mostly negligible.
Can't believe Geoff Whitehorn got a shoutout! Used to go see him as a late teen playing with The Strumbums (now Strums) at the local!! What a legend he is! Really hope they get in contact
Thank you, you two put out a lot of videos and love em!! You fill up my totally boring life with interesting things to watch and you've motivated me to buy guitars, amplifiers and other gear to get me moving again. I really needed this! Thanks again Lee and Pete, you really did get my old blood moving again, I now have a hobby and something fun to do!!
Got my Squier Strat for Christmas in ‘93 and always felt that I lacked gain for the grunge tunes I wanted to play. The family went to from Norway to London and Denmark Street on holiday in ‘94 (my first time) and I got a DriveMaster, a used late 60s Colorsound Wah, a set of strings and a bottleneck slide (and some Sega Megadrive games). My Strat couldn’t deliver the gain I wanted with that pedal (nobody told me about single coils vs humbuckers) so when my father went on a business trip to London a few weeks later he changed it to the ShredMaster. Still got it, with box and manual🔥🤘🏻
Resistance and capacitance values can change with the age of the component changing the frequency response of a circuit. So yes, the circuit could get "darker" with time.
I've still got my old Shredmaster from the 90s, it's not been used for about 20 years but I might dig it out and have a jam! I had the Blues Breaker too but it got knicked at a gig :(. I got both from Machinehead Music in Hitchin for less than £100 in about '95-'96, bought with my hard-earned paper round money.
I bought a ShredMaster back in 1996. Loved it. I ended up selling it for a good reason but I have regretted it to this day. I'm glad it's back and I'm buying one as soon as I'm able.
Great video. YES component values CAN and DO drift overtime for various reasons. How that manifests depends on component, material, manufactoring techniques / proceses and of course design. BTW freakin awesome playing in the intro. 🤪
I remember either reading somewhere or maybe seeing it in a JHS video that the Angry Charlie is in fact based on the Guvnor. Or maybe it is the Charlie Brown and then the Angry Charlie made to have more gain.
johnny greenwood from radiohead played a shredmaster for those solos. part of his signature sound with the lace pickups and his solid state fender 85 amp
I think quite a lot of indie britpop players used it too, with the gain a fair bit lower. They focussed on the original market/sound here, but it has a very wide gain range and is great for so many style.
I called for Marshall to re release these about 2 years ago on my channel. The Blues Breaker also works like a treble boost when put before another drive pedal. There are heaps of Guv'nor clones out there.
My Guv'nor story is that a mate of mine joined Carcass just before they recorded Swansong. He was backstage waiting to play his first gig with them in the USA, and when he walks out for the first number, someone had nicked his brand new pedal. He's still playing, so I reckon he'd be well chuffed that they've been re-released. I'm deffo gonna get myself one and use it as a preamp/pedal platform.
Years ago I had the Shred Master and someone I knew had the Guv , I can sort of remember it sounding good . I did read somewhere that Gary Moore used a Guv to push his Amp or something like that , great days it seems not long ago too .
Still have my original Made In England Guv’nor with box and manual i bought on release. Went to all the Guitarist shows at the UMIST in Manchester. Got loads of signed Jim Marshall posters and met Geoff Whitehorn whilst he was demoing eveything on the stand. Top guy; top player.
Twelve years ago I was looking for "my sound", being inspired by Noel Gallagher during the Oasis first days. I read in forums that the Guv'nor was the pedal to go, but since it was out of production, the best alternative was the MI Audio Crunch Box. I bought the Crunch Box and since then it is my favorite pedal. Recently I discovered the JHS Angry Charlie is also a Guv'nor clone and I now I receive the surprise that the original Marshall pedal is back in business. WAOOOO!!!
The biggest mistake in my 40 years of guitar playing was selling my Guv'nor. It was a noisy beast in my effectchain back then and maybe that was the main reason I sold it. Tried a bunch of different pedals to get that sound but never found it. The MXR Super Badass distortion came reasonable close but I was always something missing I can't describe. Now that I hear this video I have to say Marshall nailed it. These high-mids ...awesome. I'm gonna order one.
I purchased one of those shred masters from a shop in Portugal in the 90s while on vacation.. what a killer pedal. I wish I still had it. Here's my chance I guess :)
I had a Marshall Guv'nor, possibly from the first batch, although I got it for £20 many years later. I lent it to a friend a few years back and he made it the centre piece of his sound, so I gifted it to him. Maybe it's time to get a new one...
I got the BB and Guv. I’ve always loved BB clones but never cared about these pedals, like getting originals or anything. Well, these are by a mile, the best overdrives I’ve ever played. I’ve got all kinds of boutique stuff and these Marshall pedals are the best sounding, feeling and responding that I’ve ever used.
I still have my original Drivemaster and Shredmaster pedals. I’ve bought and sold heaven knows how many distortion pedals over the years but these have always been “keepers”. TBH the Shredmaster has the much more versatile EQ, lots of sounds in there, whereas the Drivemaster is more of a one sound (but what a great sound) pedal.
The new BB sounds a little bit better and crispier to me but could just be tiny differences in the pot positions between the two. Either way great reissue! Also humbuckers rule!
I’ve had a couple of nights at the Brentwood Blues Club playing with Geoff Whitehorn in the 80’s I was playing harmonica and he refused to start the gig until I was given a mic and room on stage What a gent ❤️
On the comparison between the _ancien regime_ Bluesbreaker and the new re-issue: It sounds to me (on this computer through these headphones) that the older pedal is letting a hair more bass through, giving a slightly smoother character to the distortion. It's subtle but noticeable. That's how it sounds to me, anyway. All these pedals sounded great. I'm really glad that Marshall decided to start manufacturing them again. I hope they stay in production for many years to come. Nice job, guys. (Anderton's _and_ Marshall.)
This is just parts tolerance, and confirmation bias. If you got two of the old ones, or two of the new ones, they'll sound slightly different due to parts tolerance in the components. But basically you're hearing what you think you want to hear
You can't judge two pedals in that way due to part tolerances. Film capacitors used for high pass or low pass filters usually have a + or - 10% tolerance while electrolytics can have 20% tolerances. And as Lee mentioned pots have tolerances as well. So two pedals from the same production run can have differences in tone, gain and volume.
@@iainmcguire7190 well I had no preconceived idea or need to hear something, and I heard the same thing, so I think you're wrong about the 'confirmation bias', which is a phrase usually thrown around by people who want to appear clever. Or maybe it's just cloth ears, as my grandad used to say.
@@MrDblStop It's a straightforward phrase, with a defined meaning. Sorry if you don't like vocabulary. You'll notice I said it's parts tolerance and confirmation bias. If you build the same schematic, with the same parts, in the same factory, by the same manufacturer, and they sound different, to your ears (cloth or otherwise), those are the two explanations. Hope this helps you and your grandad understand a fairly self explanatory previous comment.
I went to a Geoff Whitehorn Marshall demo evening - I didn’t buy any Marshall stuff but I did buy his album - a lovey listenable collection of guitar instrumentals.
I am way too excited about this. I used to own the Guv'nor and I spent the rest of my life regretting the day I sold it and I've never been able to find another.
@user-dc8vm2ik3d That's a complicated question bud, I will use the bluesbreaker as an example. They have been artificially inflated because of boomers, individuals who own companies like JHS for example could buy alot of original collectable pedals sit on them and sell their own verson. So an original issue between £300-750 depending on condition. The blues breaker 2, that was the llast reissue looked different so sells for like £70 used. It's honestly overpriced it's a transparent drive that needs a boost pedal to get the most out of or to replicate famous tones. Is it good? Yeah. Is it better than other cheaper drive pedals? No, not even nearly.
@@JosePineda-jn8jk Most of the prices dropped to just a little ridiculous, instead of extremely ridiculous. There still folks trying to get near $1,000, but most dropped to $500 or less, I think because they were reissuing them. There are just so many better options of the Bluesbreaker circuit, for $200 or less, from many great builders.
Nicely done.... just ordered the Gov’nor and the Bluesbreaker thx for showcasing these and having them to order as they are not readily available to purchase.... although u have a delayed delivery of a few months I am patiently waiting for delivery...Thnx 😊
The Shred Master!!! That's how it started for me. I plugged it straight into a Yamaha Keyboard amp that my mom bought for my accordion!!! Instant Shred! I had a Charvel single humbucker blue guitar with a Floyd Rose and that's how it started for me. Learning how to rock some Faith No More, Living Colour, Van Halen...all courtesy of my guitar teacher Peter Thorn!! History man!
The Guv'nor just rocks....best Marshall tone of the four. A new one is going on My pedalboard, for sure. This is Your best opening jam since Lee's go with the Gretsch 5222 double jet in natural (AC/DC revisited).
loads of pedals spawned from the Guv'nor Pete - pretty much every Marshall in a box that deploys a non-inverting op amp into an inverting op amp... Daddy O', Crunch Box, Angry Charlie, Suhr Riot...
I will be gettimg one or more of these not just because of the quality and sound but because they make them back at home. Its not my home (U.S.) but home to the Pedal. Very Cool.
This vid brings back memories. I had a Guvnor back in the days. It served me well for years and years, untill I replaced it with a Emma Reezafratzitz, which dynamically was a step forward. Still, the Guvnor was one of the best heavy overdrive pedals of that era.
My Dad and I bought the bluesbreaker and the guv’nor pedals at a guitarist show in London for a show special price of £20 each!!! Still got them and in mint condition.
Great sounding pedals. Listening on headphones and from what I can hear the older ones sound ever so slightly chewier and the newer ones have a tad more sparkle but in a room I’d say difference is minuscule. Blues Breaker and Guvnor sound really sweet 👌🏻😁
My first ever pedal was a Guv'nor. Bought new from @Andertons Music in G'Ford baby !! So stupid I sold it, but I can confirm it cost £49 Cap'n Lee. I had to do dishes at the pub to afford it.
Great to see them made in the uk again, remember that there was a 2nd release of these that were made in Korea - shame there was no mention or comparing the mk1 originals to Korea made to re issue uk - could of been really interesting I live in Australia & was sold 2x Korea blues breakers until I located original made in uk model They did sound different Gr8 video
Danelectro pedals were big when I was a kid. Then they came out with the minis and I thought they looked dumb so I moved on and got into more multi effects . I think my first was the zoom707
I was thinking of picking up the Guv’nor but they are $300 CDN here in Canada! To hell with that! I’ll stick with my RAT and GV-2 as there sound close enough if not as good! Even what I paid for both gently used, it’s still less than 1/2 the price of these reissues new.
Bought the guvnor while on holiday in Denmark in 1992, but sold it five or six years later. Bought the blues breaker for 80 euros from a music store in albir, Spain eleven years ago.
Although I've been playing guitar, with several bands, for 53 years, I couldn't tell the difference! Some of my original amps have been rebuilt and repaired so many times I'm just going to replace them. I had been taking 3 with me, hoping at least 1 would survive the night!! LOL I also discovered I need a couple pedals now. A Boss Blues Driver is about all I have ever used! Oh, and a verb when that quit on an amp, and I added a Comp-90 because some new cables were not as good as the old ones. Imagine that, 71 and building my first pedal board!! LOL 8) --gary
I am honestly shocked they didn't do this sooner. Especially with how many recreations of the bluesbreaker exist.
I am thinking the same thing. When everyone wants your pedal, and does everything in their power to recreate it, then just sell it to them again! 😂
Yeah I’ve been thinking the same thing for a long time. Not sure why they waited so long.
They were too busy making bluetooth speakers and lifestyle products.
@@suedeface 🤣☠️ you ain’t lying!
If they did this before they wont be able to sell for such a high price. The price bands are already set for them 😊

TBH the Shredmaster has the much more versatile EQ, lots of sounds in there, whereas the Drivemaster is more of a one sound (but what a great sound) pedal.
Great idea on Marshall. I would prefer to have one of these to a copy. Just for the look. Who doesn’t love the 80’s?!?
The new BB sounds a little bit better and crispier to me but could just be tiny differences in the pot positions between the two. Either way great reissue! Also humbuckers rule!
Wish they'd put a mark II on there, so I could feel smug about my original B.B. being on my board ;)
I’ve had a couple of nights at the Brentwood Blues Club playing with Geoff Whitehorn in the 80’s
I was playing harmonica and he refused to start the gig until I was given a mic and room on stage
What a gent ❤️
@@iainmcguire7190 Oh, man! Now you ruined it! Way to ruin it, ruiner! (😄)
In or around 9:40 regarding Guv'nor clones, for anyone interested the humble Danelectro Daddy-O was pretty much that, minus the effects loop feature.
I am way too excited about this. I used to own the Guv'nor and I spent the rest of my life regretting the day I sold it and I've never been able to find another.
Now everyone can play Creep
For £170 think al pass 😂
@@DevilsAvocado69 what does an original cost? (Serious questions I really wouldn’t know what is legit and what is a fake online lol)
@@JosePineda-jn8jkan original shredmaster is £220-250. So i rekkon the guvnor is about £50 to 70 p more
@@JosePineda-jn8jk
Most of the prices dropped to just a little ridiculous, instead of extremely ridiculous.
History man!
yeah ! The BluesBreaker is great ! Identical to my ears on the 2 units, or really minus differences
Let’s gooooo!! Ⓜ️🚀 Sounds ace guys 🎸
You didn't know anything about these did you? :)
@@andertons not a clue.. the shock on my face when I saw this video appear 🤯😜 perfectly demo’d’ here guys, really enjoyed it 🎸
@@PedalPawn 😂 I'm surprised as well my friend:)
I'm happy these have been remade. I've wanted a shredmaster for a long time. Sounds like they didn't cut any corners either.
Very Cool.
Wow, the Shredmaster sounded amazing. I think I need one of those for my travel board.
I bought it '88 in Germany for about 200 Deutsche Mark . That was much money!
Man I was going to buy a second-hand Marshall Bluesbreaker MK 1 for 400 quid! So glad I didn't now! Love the video guys!
Great to see them made in the uk again, remember that there was a 2nd release of these that were made in Korea - shame there was no mention or comparing the mk1 originals to Korea made to re issue uk - could of been really interesting
I live in Australia & was sold 2x Korea blues breakers until I located original made in uk model
They did sound different
Gr8 video
Liked how the blues breaker sounded on this video so much, I went and ordered a clone build kit
Great as always. Thanks for talking about the work Marshall did to make them as close to the originals as possible.
The best intro jam so far!
Great feeling playing 80/90's pedals on 1996 gibson through 90' Marshall amp and being born in 80's. Feeling old now:)
🙂
Brings back memories of the local guitar shop glass display where you'd have just these and some boss pedals
That opening jam was EPIC!
