This made a welcome change of content. The spy house would make a lovely countryside getaway once modernised with investment and definitely needs car parking availability! A constant of the universe is just how much more you get for your money in places like Atami.
Good luck with your property quest Andrew.

It likely depends on who owns/manages the property, but a lot of these companies are DESPERATE to get these properties out of their hands because it can actually cost them more in management costs than the property is worth. Many of these properties are SO unpopular because of their location or just the quality of the property itself that they just sit there falling apart for years. This is a problem in a lot of countries, actually, particularly small to medium sized countries with major metropolitan areas that everyone wants to move to. It’s surprisingly easy to find very affordable housing that is only just an hour’s drive outside of a major city in many countries.

The first house had my heart, and I never wavered, although the last one with the mountain feel came close. I hesitated due to earthquakes and mudslides, but the location was beautiful. It did need a bit of updating, so #1 stayed my pick, that view was stunning! I agree with Ming, the "grandma" house creeped me out, even though I'm a grandma, lol! It was too dark and lonely feeling.

I know here in Oz post covid the costs in everything went through the roof (no pun) and takes ages to get any work done. Also with the older houses, how do they go with earthquake proofing them up to modern building codes? Hope it's a good adventure and thanks for documenting this.

In my town there are a few areas that have geological faults, so the houses in there are built over vaguely similar manners/foundations than the 3rd house and the spy house and, honestly I don't think you'd want something like that on the long run. Those cracks on the wall of the 3rd house are a good indicator that you'll likely be dealing with that sort of issue every now and then permanently, as the earth underneath might not be too stable to support a house. I don't even live in an earthquake prone area, and yet the houses I've seen dealing with that issue (fault + questionable foundation) are literally falling apart and require a lot of maintenance on the long run because of it and, depending on the case, some can even become unsalvageable.
Generally speaking, I really like the "old" vibes all those houses had, even the 'haunted' one lol.
Best of lucks with the search, Andrew, and I hope you find a place that matches what you're looking for! Also, gotta second Andrew here: Meng's new car looks neat!

Very surprised at how 'cheap' the houses in Japan are, given that land is at such a premium there. Here in the UK, similar size houses would cost several times more, depending on what part of the country you are in. I looked at a four-room lease-hold maisonette in my home town in Kent and you wouldn't get much change out of £250,000.

  • @richardengelhardt582

Well, as a very frequent visitor to Japan, if I were to want to rent an air b&b for, say, a month with my family, it would have to be in an area where there is lots to visit, hang out, shop, eat. AND the house itself would need to have some traditional Japanese character, with a small garden and a sea or mountain view. Accessibility to a big city would be a negative, not a plus.

I would take the second realtor, er no, I mean I would go with the first crib, the one with the balcony and the neighborhood is just fine. No need for a nearby coffee shop when you can just have your own espresso machine and sip on your own coffee while sitting on the balcony. That house will appreciate the fastest and will be the easiest to rent out. Also, who needs a car when you can just get an Uber. Ditch the car. How much would you be looking at renting the place for, especially for retired expats from the US on say a six month or one year lease?

If you could only see my jaw drop when you started talking prices. You can't buy a cardboard box to live in on the street for mid $40,000 here in the states. For mid $60,000 you might be able to purchase a single room shed with one of its walls collapsed. I think I saw that 4th house featured in a TH-cam video on the challenge Japan is facing with Japanese people turning into hermit recluses and then dying in their home and the body not being found for several months.
