Craig Ferguson was a seriously underrated late night host, in my opinion. His monologue on why he wasn’t going to make fun of Britney Spears after her extremely public breakdown remains one of the kindest and bravest things I’ve ever seen a late night host do.
I really loved watching him. Such a great interviewer. So charming in a lighthearted comfortable way. Truly the kind of person you feel like you would love to have a coffee with. ❤😭🥰
I'll never forget that disastrous Reddit AMA with James Corden lmao. The top comment was asking Corden whether, in his opinion as a professional asshole, he should invest in a bidet.
@@roryslaine7896 Even after watching the video I still just dont like the guy. He just seems fake to me for some reason, same with Ellen years ago. Im not saying he is a terrible person because of the "vibe" I got because quite frankly I feel the same way of about 80% of lateshow hosts. Id probably like him more if I came to know him from some other medium. Even someone as awesome as Conan O'Brian just becomes better in different environments.
Especially when you compare him to someone like Seth Meyers, who does a whole ass web show that has evolved into 60% jokes just to make the staff and crew laugh (corrections) (where my jackals at?❤). Hearing the crew genuinely laugh at things Seth says is so endearing and enjoyable.
@@Copperyfoxx jackals are we also, we who comment, he made and we made a whole relationship and 100 episodes of inside jokes. i love that whole team and seth.
There is one thing I give credit to him for. He once hosted childish gambino and this guy named reggie and they did some weird but pretty catchy freestyle. Its great but wouldn't have worked outside the james corden show
I absolutely agree it's the falseness that is the problem. I'm a store worker, and I personally don't have a problem with customers sometimes being rude. We all have occasional headaches, UTIs, family problems; sometimes patience runs thin. It happens and I don't take it personally. An apologetic smile, a quick "I'm so embarrassed over last time", or just improving the behavior, and we're good. But if you're rude all the time and act like if you're not? All fake laughs and expecting special treatment for being "nice", all with and era of being so much better than us? THAT makes you unlikable. And that kind of unlikeability shines through. We laughed our heads off when one of these guys called me "that fucking intern" to my face because he didn't recognize me with my hair down. After his rant I simply said "Oh, well, that was me, but describe the issue and I'll see what I can do." His face went blank for a second, then he returned to the fake smiling, pretending like his little rant never happened. And to this day, he, of course, wants special treatment. And if he had been famous, I would have tweeted about it. Nobody expects perfect behavior. But humans are impressively good at sniffing out falseness. And we don't like falseness.
Thank you for putting this into words! "Humans are impressively good at sniffing out falseness" rings incredibly true. James Corden reminds me of an ex of mine who I despise being reminded of, as he is the reason for my PTSD. James Corden doesn't look like him, doesn't emote the same way, doesn't sound like him, but I look at him and SEE my ex. And it's exactly that, the same aura of fakeness, the same fake enthusiasm and cheekiness that I'm detecting. Where, if they were being honest to their true thoughts and feelings, they would get nasty and rude and hurtful, but decide to wrestle it down with impeccable self control. TRO make a comment in this video, that James Corden isn't comfortable with presenting his true personality to the public. And while we can't tell what's under the surface, it makes everyone incredibly suspicious, even if nothing is wrong with James and he may actually just be painfully normal.
I think people like that have... convinced themselves that that is what everyone else does. That they're all faking, so they understand to a degree. But he just think's he's faking it better, or more. But he's not he's just fake. And people are living as the people they are.
As an American, I agree. I'll throw myself under the bus here and admit I used to find him funny. That is until I started watching more British media, got used to the accent, and really started to HEAR what he was saying. He's... just a very boring dude.
@gem9535 he was the same here, he did a show called gavin and stacey, i never watched but it was big, then he got even bigger with a league of their own. It was after this did we realise hes a dick. He moved and he was loved til you all worked him out
I love when the editor seems to have purposefully put the word "skit" behind your head so the headline just says "Jimmy Kimmel apologizes for killing everyone in China"
It's so weird when there's a really well known celebrity who's mostly known for being hated. It's like someone tried & failed to make him famous but he ended up infamous by accident & whoever was helping him just gave up.
I think of big part of it is the fact he’s like the 6th most popular late night host and most people nowadays know him from that. So it’s like, you hate him or your reaction is “Who?”
The story about him ignoring his wife and kid on a plane is his legacy. That's what will be told centuries after his death, as an example of how bad celebrities were back in the old days.
Yep, I'm really surprised that this wasn't mentioned in the video, when its supposed to be about James Corden and the public's negative opinion of him. Maybe it was purposely omitted because the narrator couldn't come up with an excuse. Or maybe just poor research.
@@princessmonokae More like it's unsubstantiated. The Balthazar incident was corroborated by the owner, the plane story could've been written by anyone.
@@weplaydk2343It would be a poor show to add in every unsubstantiated rumour, TRO is wise to avoid that pitfall. Even if in this case it would make little difference as the subject is a celebrity that is widely maligned anyway.
Being a 56 year old American female I grew up with the talk shows like Donahue in the day and Carson at night. Your video covered not just the subject of your title but the late night talk show genre and you did so excellently. Your piece has also led me to a sad conclusion that the late night talk show the major networks have been producing is an era at it's end. It is neither good or bad it's just progress and the way people are entertained changes with it.
That's how it's always been, i've been watching these talk shows since the 90's and none of them were ever entertaining unless you're one of those celebs obsessed people. The format is so dumb, it's 25% talking 5% random tidbits and the rest are tv ads.
@@stellviahohenheim Agree with this, at least with the major network shows. What's also interesting is that the majority of late night are interviews, at least in terms of air time. Yet very few hosts come in with interviewing as a strong point, and it shows with almost every show. Colbert is solid, but even he's still a comedian first. Even in the 80s and 90s, I pretty much switched around the late night shows for the set pieces. Leno's was the only monologue that I consistently liked, but that's because he was a veteran standup who effectively did a 10-15 minute set every night. After that, it was looking to see what people were doing that night. Leno is doing Headlines? Okay, I'll hang for that. Oh cool, Letterman is doing Stupid Human Tricks, or Conan and Andy are doing In The Year 2000 again. Etc. Nowadays, I can't imagine who actually wtaches the shows on the air. Older folks tend to be asleep by then, and anyone younger than 50 probably has no interest in any of it. You have it right: beyond the first 20 minutes, late night is really only good for the star-fuckers. In Carson's day, that worked because it was the only really good way to see celebs outside their craft. But in the modern era, you don't really need it.
@@6thwilbury2331 So right on. Your comment on Leno doing the headlines reminded me of what one of my mentors chided me about getting the news of the day just through talk show hosts monologues. "Find all the facts young lady then make your conclusions." lol He was a good man.🤩
My favorite James Corden story is when he was sitting next to a woman and her crying baby on a plane and tried his best to ignore them by putting on headphones and turning away from them, and then it turned out they were his family.
I met James Corden in a restaurant in 2015. I went over to him just to tell him how much I liked his sitcom , and he suddenly flew into a rage, shouted "fudge cake, fudge cake, fudge cake!" at me, and then he stabbed me to death, and stole my girlfriend's dessert.
What's this? Nuance? About an individual the internet decided everyone hates? Honestly though, I really respect this take, not because I'm a fan of Corden -- I've only ever seen him on Big Fat Quiz and Graham Norton -- but just for the sake of hearing a bit of humanizing nuance once in a while. Great video, TRO and team!
as an american who loves panel shows it was so surprising to see him on the big fat quiz. i was like "isn't this the talk show guy?". had no idea he had such a big presence in the uk!
Yes he’s big here only for Gavin and Stacey. The show is brilliant and funny. He and Ruth Jones are very talented. He’s not big now. He does earn a big cheque from repeat royalties. The show seems a bit dated but always worth a watch
@@magrend2 Just want to state that not everyone in the UK likes Gavin & Stacey. A lot of us found it tedious and cringey and news of christmas specials feel like a threat to some of us. I mean, it's at least preferable to mrs browns boys, but not by much. Corden though has always been an annoying prick.
Although he's not in the US late-night space, I do think that the best host out there is still Graham Norton, and my reason for that is the lack of distraction. The whole show is just interactions between a bunch of people (often helped by alcohol), capped off by one musical performance and a little bit of audience participation. Graham is also a very good facilitator of conversation in a way that James Corden lacked. It's all the skits and games that turn me off most of late-night. That said, I DO feel like Craig Ferguson was severely underrated. His more surrealist elements like Geoff Peterson and Secretariat were far more a precursor to The Eric Andre Show than anything else seen on late-night.
Graham Norton will never be beaten as a host, even most American celebs have said that they prefer going on his show instead of the US ones. I want to say Jonathan Ross is a good host as well, but he gets really annoying after a few minutes. Paul O'Grady was another who was an amazing host, and it's sad that he was taken from us.
I'd love to have a drink with Graham Norton. He's sharp, witty, warm, and genuinely interested in his guests. He's adorable when he gets starstruck and all giddy. Craig Ferguson is no different imho. It's like getting comfy with a good friend. A drink with James Cordon just sounds like a frustrating ordeal really.
Me too! He made a joke, my partner clapped really loud and Craig remarked on it. It was great, we had a couple of older ladies as our neighbours and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I like very few comedians. My brother met him once, had nice conversation and I even saw him at an eatery, but didn't go up to him as he was with family, you know, eating.
Thank you, for the great deep dive. 1. Craig F is one irreverent self-deprecating class act. 2. He mixed all his talents and 'flaws' into perfection. 3. He walked the fine line, often on one foot, never stumbling into poor taste. 4. He never resorted to mocking someone to increase laughs. 5. Many of us will always miss Craig, especially when 12:35 AM approaches. Craig has no 'flaws', what is a more appropriate word?
But Rob Schneider's everybody's favorite comedian! Have you not seen his hilarious anti-woke stand-up comedy, streaming now on FoxNation-a streaming service that totally exists?
Ferguson was amazing. I loved his show. He was such a great interviewer. Charming and self deprecating. Silly and light hearted. Immediately disarming and comforting for anyone that may have started out nervous or uncomfortable. You could make an hour long video just on why he’s so likeable and seemingly easy to talk to.
Totally, it feels like one giant exercise in self agrandising for the host and the celebrities, like they all gather round to implicitly suggest they're amazing. Why would you spend time watching people grease their own poles.
The restaurant is a big turning point for James’ career because his old attitude from Britain made it through. Americans get very angry at people who are rude to service workers because many of us have been there. Not to mention, this was the beginning of the economic crisis that was to come so workers in general were over this kind of behavior. We don’t like people who look down at us from above, we don’t like bad sports, and we don’t like impatience. He embodied all of those qualities in one scandal. You’ll notice that everything he did after that was suddenly seen through the same lens. Dancing in the middle of a busy LA street while paying it to make the red lights there last longer suddenly seemed incredibly irritating. People have shit to do, work to get to. Making other celebrities eat something gross if they don’t reveal super private information felt invasive.
i feel like too many people in these comments missed the point that this video tried to touch upon which is that james corden may be a lot of things, he isn't 'untalented' or 'horrible', he's just a man who got pretty lucky and did a pretty damn good job of making a career out of it and the hate thrown at him (and many others) are merely bandwagoning and forget to extend humanity beyond your "average" person. criticism of a person's work doesn't equal hate or personal attacks on a person
Yeah I genuinely think most of the hate simply came from him being EVERYWHERE. I personally started getting a sour taste in my mouth because his name was incredibly prominently placed on the poster of a LOT soulless and incompetent movies (Cinderella, emoji movie, ect.). But he's not a bad actor, his performance on Into the Woods (while the singing was not great) was actually pretty good. I don't doubt that also his enthusiastic persona just ended up coming off as disingenuous and annoying. Like a comment here that said he reminds them of the the kid in drama class who thought they where amazing and insisted on being the lead despite not being the best actor in the class. Most people disliked him before he did anything wrong.
I have asked people why they’ve hated him before and a significant number of people have said “it’s because he’s fat and Sir Patrick Stewart said that was a good reason to hate someone.” I wish I was joking. Like, I really wish I was lying. Even more people just… can’t explain it. They hate that he breathes. But somehow don’t have the sense to realize he’s not at fault for that. If I was one of the people still bandwagoning hating him while someone explained, in great and grounded detail, why that is over-the-top… well, I’d be pretty embarrassed.
@@Lacewisewell I hate that he's unkind to customer service workers, nor do I think he's funny but I don't doubt his acting ability and I just wish people were nicer in general.
@@insertnamehere6191do we have enough evidence of that? Or do we have evidence that he is flippant and sometimes even rude to service workers (to be clear, this would still be bad. However, a different level of magnitude)? Because James Corden, while slightly more handsome than your average guy, is by no means distinctive looking or sounding. There’s no reason to just accept everyone’s “sightings” as true in this case, especially given his handling of the one situation that went mainstream.
I've been watching your content for a while, and I have to say I appreciate how you allow editors to credit themselves in the chapter titles. I feel like more content creators need to do that
He's lukewarm milk where we could get cold milk with cereal or hot chocolate milk instead. How the hell did he get an emmy? Was there no john oliver, colbert, john stewart during that time?
Conan and Colbert 🙏🏼 they're actually genuinely funny and relate to their guests rather than fake laugh at everything. True, why the heck did James get an Emmy 🤦🏼♀️
I thought for certain you would include the story about Corden being on a transatlantic flight next to a woman with a mewling, nursing baby. He slaps on a sleep mask and noise canceling headphones and sleeps for the bulk of the flight. When the flight lands in the UK the woman shakes him and says "You didn't help me with the entire flight James, the least you could do is help me get her and some luggage off this plane!"😮 are we not certain her allergy isn't to him?!
I don't think the egg white incident and the allergy incident was the same. He didn't mention what his wife was allergic to. Just that she has an allergy and they kept messing up her order
I assumed she was probably allergic to something in the wrong side dish they brought her when she got the new omelette, since he mentions sending it back for the third time or whatever. However it is possible to have a mild allergy or intolerance to only one part of the egg (yolk or the egg white). So for her eating a yolk only omelette (with only traces of egg white) might be fine. Eating a whole egg omelette likely wouldn't kill her, but it could still make her ill. If it was something else she was allergic to I think it's okay to send it back for containing egg whites, since it'll be a different type of omelette. Especially when you're eating somewhere high end.
@@SmulenifyI also feel like if a high end restaurant (they often make stuff like custard and meringue, which involves carefully completely separating the eggs) can’t make an egg white only/yolk only omelette… that’s weird…? That’s the one place I would expect to be able to do it. High end restaurants and cafes.
I'm 42 and grew up on Carson. I have many fond memories of being young and laughing at all the jokes. Now a days I've put on Antennae TV for my father with dementia and when this comes on... I find myself stopping to listen and laughing. And interesting enough he would have some political jokes and it's so interesting seeing how a 40+ old joke can still apply to today. And his ability with interviews, they did always seem authentic. There were plenty of times a comment would catch him off guard and you could see Johnny himself laughing at how he was thrown off. Right now everything is a formula. I think, for me, the pandemic killed me with talk shows. Them being at home and not having their full staff showed.
I wonder (genuinely wonder, I don't have any answers here) if things could have been different if James Corden was thin. I wonder to what extent he felt pressured to adopt a jolly comedian persona, because that's a role society generally accepts from fat celebrities, and not much else. People generally are a lot less forgiving towards fat people for their slipups and transgressions. Combine that with a bit of a theater kid air that isn't inherently harmful but also rubs a lot of people the wrong way, I'd really like to take a peak into the alternate universe where there's a thin James Corden without the theater affectations and see how well he's done.
He definitely gives Jonah Hill vibes in the way that he gets triggered over his weight though- all the smiles dissapear if you joke about his insecurity
I think good looking people get away with more at times as people can be swayed and taken in by looks (human nature) It’s not that people dislike Corden because he’s fat- people dislike him because he’s a complete knob head - it’s just maybe he’d have got more of a pass if he looked better.
Really interesting thought. I think a useful comparison for this is Conan O'Brien. He jokes a lot about his own appearance (being tall, skinny, pale etc) and he also gets away with being a huge dick on camera. Being a dick is even part of his whole schtick. Imagine if James Corden tried to add those two things to his act. If he constantly commented on his own looks, and then also openly acted like an asshole. We would say he's just a sad, insecure man who takes it out on others. But Conan gets away with it because we sort of know he's really not that bad-looking... Or, at least he's not fat. And he can be a dick because he's easy on the eyes, we're not openly judging his appearance. That being said I also think there's something to be said about the fact that Conan is just a fundamentally better comedian than James Corden. He's objectively funnier. So I don't know, that also makes him infinitely more tolerable to me.
It sucks because he could’ve been a decent comedian if he went the more straight man route (ex: when he played The Baker in the film adaptation of Into the Woods), but no, he wanted to be the goofy guy and failed miserably at it
I liked his character in _Doctor Who_ cos he was just a simple wholesome guy. He never had super ugly moments and was pretty sympathetic. Like, a much cuter version of his character from _Into the Woods_ Just a family man that didn't need to be the comic relief all the time
@spectre9340 Yes that character was fantastic. It’s why I initially had a favorable opinion of James. Then I saw his mire annoying roles, and how he behaved generally. It was annoying. Not evil or anything, but annoying.
As someone who tends to skew on their side of things, I agree with you. I don't really watch them anymore because politics are depressing to me and I would rather read the news in 5 minutes rather than sit through 30 minutes of politics. Not a slight on them, their research teams do great work and John Oliver especially has accomplished great things with his platform. I just am so, so tired and I would rather spend my time elsewhere.
Every episode of the Daily Show had a monologue and a guest. Occasionally two. And they had segments and sketches. I would never considered it as such when I woke up this morning but reading the comment made me realize the Daily Show had more in common with Johnny Carson than Dan Rather
@virginiavanni8061 It was seen more on older episodes, pretty quickly celebrities began appearing in goofy skits and songs rather than actual interviews.
The truth at the heart of all this is late night TV is the canary in the coal mine for the death of network tv. Since the time of Letterman v Leno, the decline and fragmentation of audiences due to cable, then TH-cam, then social media and streaming, Late night has been ahead of the curve for programming as a whole. (with the possible exception of children's programming/cartoons) The fact that the one lifeline they've found to keep their heads above water is TH-cam, shows they're woefully behind the times even today.
16:55 Well, I feel called out. I didn't realize there were two Late Night Jimmies, and figured that at any given time, it was just one guy who I didn't pay much attention to!
This video is way more charitable to the man than I would have expected. Well done on you, TRO, for giving him a fair shake and not having this video be a 2-hour lampooning session.
The thing that rubs me the wrong way about Corden is it feels everything he does is inauthentic. When he's cheerful he doesn't come across as genuinely happy. It's instead this projected attitude that is like a kindergarten teacher masking inner rage and contempt.
Agree. Couldnt stand the show, he become the screaming man. Too loud and inability to ond with his guests. Which is why I liked Ferguson and Norton. Conversations, not all forced skits.
18:22 Graham's show is the best. It has been since he started. Everybody trust the man. Even when it devolves into a cringey topic, Graham will wrangle it back in with a resounding laugh.
While I fully understand Craig Ferguson's desire to move on from late night, one half of me is still sour that his replacement 'choice' was Corden while the other half is laughing at the cruel joke he played on the viewers by that 'choice'.. 😀 Also in regard to Craig's 'digital viability' while on the Late Late Show I would say that was a mistake by the network, considering how many millions of views the fan uploads of Craig's interview sections have. 😃
Craig actually didn't want to move on from Late Night. Nothing was written down, but he'd been told he'd have right of first refusal for The Late Show when Letterman moved on. Instead, they gave it to Colbert without consulting Craig, so he left.
The lockdown musical number was also frustrating for those of us front line workers who were not fortunate enough to be about to stay home and be safe. I had to go to work every day through the whole pandemic and it's just irritating to see people who were so fortunate to be able to stay safe indoors rejoice because they could go outside again. I wish I would have been able to feel safe like that.
completely agree. my mother nearly died of pneumonia because she was a front line worker taking care of patients who had the virus and hearing that celebration boils my blood - i know it wasn't the intention but it feels almost mocking to those who did die as even though they likely did stay inside or didn't get the choice to they still suffered and became another statistic
You're right about Fallon too. He's a company man. He's a fence sitting, corporate shill, who had to be shamed into publicly supporting one of the big union strikes a while back, iirc. He's no John Oliver.
From the first time I tried to watch Corden's show, knowing nothing about him, I got the vibes too. I think it might be his body language or facial expressions that trigger a feeling of inauthenticity, therefore untrustworthy. I think that feeling set up the path to the intense dislike that followed after a few car karaoke watches and the clip of him in a costume, thrusting at a car. That was the nail.
This has been one of my favorite deep dive so far honestly. Late night shows as a kid is something I always thought was interesting, now I’m an adult(technically) and like most my age I don’t even watch tv. That and I like your take on James Corden, it’s such a fresh perspective to be like “yeah he isn’t great but he did cool things, sometimes” instead of an eternal hate fest, which I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve.
Honestly this is just reminding me how much I love John Stewart. His masterful weaving of comedy, humanity, and confronting hard to navigate topics is absolutely unmatched.
I used to watch Craig Fergison everynight when I could since I was in high school at the time. I was there when he got Geoff the Robot and he was just so funny and overall hilarious. I still quote Geoff's "Carefull Icarus" all the time. The channel TheJayLeno Fly has great compliations Of Craigs show. Sometimes I wish he would come back becuase he always had such interesting stories. His stand up specials, I think he has more than one, are also very good. Great videof Righty!
This is one of my favorites of your videos. You dug into the history and possible future not only of James Corden but of the genre as a whole and did it with an excellent analysis of both,
I think there's a reason that John Oliver resonates so much with the youngest generations. He took the late night formula and reapplied it to be educational entertainment and activism. He saw the trends and Tides shifting towards political commentary and things of that nature and instead of creating a show that just Loosely dabbles in these topics with clear lack of insight, you get these well-researched and crafted narratives and topics that engage and educate. It also helps that he doesn't come across as out of touch because he and his writing team are just more in touch with the youngest Generations. I know that I used to watch Seth Meyers and Stephen Colbert and others in like 2016 or 2017. There were some stuff that I really liked. 6 years later and I feel like John Oliver is the only one whose formula still resonates.
7:11 kim possible is my actual text tone so I genuinely thought i got a text and then was convinced my phone was about to break because I knew I heard the text but couldn’t see one. So basically you nearly gaslit me into insanity. Other than that love your channel tro
it's crazy that the worst thing you can be online is annoying and kind of cringe. endless harassment, even death threats, for just being some average gen x comedian show host.
It’s a red flag for me when someone makes fun or harass someone for being harmless but embarrassing. I'd never befriend or talk to someone like that. Light jokes can be fine, but bullying someone online, especially under their own posts/videos, for no apparent reason is just too low. Like I'm not exaggerating when I say that some people seem to treat this as an actual crime. It’s ridiculous. Not talking about james cordon here, but in general.
I totally agree with you. As an autistic person the way people get so foaming at the mouth angry at a guy who they just think isn't charismatic, or is awkward or is like. "Inauthentic" (none of us know literally any of these people... the celebrities you feel like you know are just really good at playing this consistent person for their audience... and "playing" is supposed to be the thing you don't like her).... it's a red flag for those angry fans in my opinion. Like, okay, if you don't read perfectly neurotypical, ideal, fake the ideal personality in just a way where it's not read as fake then everyone will hate you? No evidence Corden is neuroatypical but I absolutely have seen people do this with minor TH-cam celebrities who ARE autistic or have a personality disorder or other mental conditions... I am not gonna dig in to Corden bc the behavior is just to familiar to me as "the way people treat neuroatypical people like me for not blending in"
Yeah, only ever gave a darn for him when he had BTS on his show. I’m not even going to lie about it. Carpool karaoke is fantastic and it’s a format I thoroughly love and enjoy!
He's genuinely not a bad actor, and I don't think he's a demon in disguise either. Genuinely think his main problem is that he took every opportunity he could and ended up being part of projects and films that turned out to be disingenuous, soulless cash grabs. I am 100% aware that the only reason I dislike him is because I started seeing his name in a movie and thinking "Great. Another Emoji Movie/Cinderella/Cats". I don't doubt also that for people who found him annoying/disingenuous in the first place ,seeing him EVERYWHERE didn't help.
The death of Late Night TV comes from one source. A lack of talent. They overly politicize while not being funny, make the least offensive jokes imaginable when not grandstanding the host to the point of loathing them, and they lack any and all connection with the common man. The Late Night turned from jokes and talks to selling products but themselves first. James Corden is a prime example as someone who has never earned a singular fucking laugh that wasnt written and reheasered a million times.
Anyone struggle to keep up with the narration/delivery here? Maybe I'm getting old, but it just felt like some words bled together and I wanted it to be a little slower and clearer.
I maintain that they picked the wrong james to replace craig ferguson. Shoulda been james acaster. We wouldve had 1000% more celebrity mental breakdowns if he had taken over
The American audience isn't ready for Acaster, he may be a little to eccentric for them and a lot of his material would be wasted. He is definitely an underappreciated comedian, and I love seeing him appear on panel shows, you know it's gonna be nutty when he's in the line up.
That comment and visual showing that it was expected to release in december 2023, but instead would be March 2024, when it released in April 2024, really sums up your schedule TRO. But it's all gravy, because these videos are so well done and worth every moment I wait for them. Thanks for the video, see you next time chap.
getting a new TRO upload is so refreshing, I forget often what a truly great video essay looks like. respect to James putting quality over quantity with his scripts + love to the editors who put the work in to make these possible!
I know what I was watching and who I was learning about, but I still rolled my eyes the moment you said James Corden's name. Each time I hear about him, it's against my will. (I always try to find time to watch your videos, even if it's about a topic I don't really care about, like James Corden.)
As someone who still consumes late night, I completely agree with everything you said. The spontaneity of late night has gone, the interviews feel scripted and with it, the need to watch it live or even consume the promotional content no longer feels necessary. Carson's TH-cam channel is an absolute gem
Thanks for the unbiased look at this reminding me of the things i do/did like about james corden. However, i will say any look at his hiring and run on the late late show is in my opinion incomplete without mentioning ben winston. I think cbs hired ben who brought on and championed for james if im not mistaken. Per wikipedia ben winston "is a British producer, director...He has won 13 Emmy Awards and been nominated 33 times. He holds the record for the individual with the most Emmy nominations in any one year when in 2019 he received 8 nominations. Business Insider described him as “the most influential producer in television.”' Edit: nope james was hired then ben came on but he and ben did league of their own and bunch of other stuff and ben is how james got the friends reunion and they did the tonys together too. Arguably he and james came up with carpool karoke together way back when they did a tv production with gary barlow in the uk. Edit2: variety has an interesting article "From ‘Friends’ to Kardashians: How James Corden and Ben Winston’s Fulwell 73 Became a Go-To Production House in Hollywood." Why yes i am in a rabbit hole, thank you for noticing, please send snacks.
@@miss_in_security6742 its crazy because the whole thing goes back to my days as a 1D fan. James had a connection the the band then introduced them to ben and now he and ben still have a very strong relationship with 1D members but specifically harry styles who is even the god father of ben winstons kid. Anyway, its interesting how the late late show with James corden came about it part because of one direction and im kind of bummed it didn't get a mention.
Ive never paid attention to him so ive always been confused why everyone hates him so much. Im glad ive found a video that goes over it all so i dont have to start actually paying attention to celebrities.
Johnny Carson was a REALLY good interviewer. And one of the things he did that a lot of the late night hosts today struggle with is that he didn’t make the interviews about him but he was excellent at making the guests comfortable and directing the conversation so there weren’t lulls and it didn’t drag and guests got the topics they wanted to hit in during the time they had. Strangely I’ve seen interviews that Letterman has done since he retired and I think he’s better at that now than he was when he actually a show host. Maybe he felt more pressure to perform back then whereas now he just interviews people he’s genuinely interested in.
“The people’s late night host” is unequivocally Conan, which on some level is ironic when you remember he’s the only Harvard Ivy League grad of the lot yet to me the most grounded
I haven't watched the full video yet but I'm so happy to see you've uploaded again. I hope you're taking care of yourself, TRO. Your content is always amazing, concise and eloquent but honestly your health and happiness comes first. Thank you for the content and for your and your editors hard work.

Hello
This man does NOT want to end up on hbomberguy
Hearing the Kim Possible text tone that I use was a trip
Holy shit actual ethics
😊
Craig Ferguson was a seriously underrated late night host, in my opinion. His monologue on why he wasn’t going to make fun of Britney Spears after her extremely public breakdown remains one of the kindest and bravest things I’ve ever seen a late night host do.
I really loved watching him. Such a great interviewer. So charming in a lighthearted comfortable way. Truly the kind of person you feel like you would love to have a coffee with. ❤😭🥰
Wholeheartedly agree. I was quite disappointed when Cordens show started and it was so far removed from what Craig did along with Geoff Peterson.
Craig was BRILLIANT!
So many compliments... Careful, Icarus.
@@Metallutedawg what?
ok but that clip of someone in the audience yelling ”i love you”, only for someone to yell back ”f off” really sums up england to me
Based. Americans could never.
I'll never forget that disastrous Reddit AMA with James Corden lmao. The top comment was asking Corden whether, in his opinion as a professional asshole, he should invest in a bidet.
Lmao, I think on that same AMA one of the most upvoted questions was: "have you ever considered being funny or likeable?" 😂
💀💀💀
Hire that person!!!
XD
I’ll be using this line from now on…
@@roryslaine7896 Even after watching the video I still just dont like the guy.
He never felt like a BAD person to me, but not a GOOD one either. He just didnt seem genuine in anything. And omg he was EVERYWHERE
In the public perspective, being an annoying person is worse than being bad person.
@@latlatko nailed it, that’s exactly right.
This is exactly how I feel about jimmy fallon
@ClairaGavins-dx4ji This is how I feel about both of them
There’s lots of behind the scenes of Cordon acting like a propper cunt.
James Corden reminds me of that one loud kid in drama class who always insisted on being the main character but couldn’t really act
So accurate..!
Neckbeard theater kid
That kid, but one that somehow never grew out of it.
Exactly. He reminds me of PSH's character in Along Came Polly, only that character had some redeeming qualities.
And the teacher kept giving them the role despite nobody liking it
The clip of Kimmel telling Corden to name 2 cameramen was what woke me up to why Corden deserves the hate he gets.
I haven't actually seen that one. Did Kimmel get the same question? He seems like an empathic and down-to-earth guy most of the time.

If there’s one thing everyone online from various backgrounds, ideologies and countries can agree on, is that James Corden isn’t a good comedian.

Said nobody ever about him in Cats or at any stage in his life 😂
He isn’t a good comedian.
He isn’t a good actor.
He isn’t a good person.
He isn’t… good.

There is one thing I give credit to him for. He once hosted childish gambino and this guy named reggie and they did some weird but pretty catchy freestyle. Its great but wouldn't have worked outside the james corden show
He's not even a good person
After his rant I simply said "Oh, well, that was me, but describe the issue and I'll see what I can do."
His face went blank for a second, then he returned to the fake smiling, pretending like his little rant never happened. And to this day, he, of course, wants special treatment. And if he had been famous, I would have tweeted about it.
Nobody expects perfect behavior. But humans are impressively good at sniffing out falseness. And we don't like falseness.
You made some interesting points, that helped me see several different scenarios more clearly, thank you.
"UTIs" 😂
UTI is so specific lmao
James Corden is the best example of how Britain will kinda give certain celebrities to America cause they don't want them anymore 😊
Us Americans get so easily entertained by accents that sound fancy.
As an American, I agree. I'll throw myself under the bus here and admit I used to find him funny. That is until I started watching more British media, got used to the accent, and really started to HEAR what he was saying.
He's... just a very boring dude.
*John Oliver pretends to not hear this*
@gem9535 he was the same here, he did a show called gavin and stacey, i never watched but it was big, then he got even bigger with a league of their own. It was after this did we realise hes a dick. He moved and he was loved til you all worked him out

Trueeeeeeee! 😟🤣😏
I don't really follow him but the stuff I have seen gives me an entitled, sassy prick vibe.
@@LateNightTableCo Sometimes my reaction is both of these at once
The story about him ignoring his wife and kid on a plane is his legacy. That's what will be told centuries after his death, as an example of how bad celebrities were back in the old days.
Yep, I'm really surprised that this wasn't mentioned in the video, when its supposed to be about James Corden and the public's negative opinion of him. Maybe it was purposely omitted because the narrator couldn't come up with an excuse. Or maybe just poor research.

Only James Corden could want to act as a big, fat pussy. Kind of ironic, if you ask me.
ok but the netflix The Prom might be close
"Find all the facts young lady then make your conclusions." lol He was a good man.🤩
They bored that genre to death
My favorite James Corden story is when he was sitting next to a woman and her crying baby on a plane and tried his best to ignore them by putting on headphones and turning away from them, and then it turned out they were his family.
I met James Corden in a restaurant in 2015. I went over to him just to tell him how much I liked his sitcom , and he suddenly flew into a rage, shouted "fudge cake, fudge cake, fudge cake!" at me, and then he stabbed me to death, and stole my girlfriend's dessert.
@@atomicdanceri wouldn't blame him for that, that's just British people being british
the way they wrote it was soooo funny tho.
That was his wife and kid😂😂😂
@@petrolhead0387man i forgot Paul passed. Such a shame.
I'd love to have a drink with Graham Norton. He's sharp, witty, warm, and genuinely interested in his guests. He's adorable when he gets starstruck and all giddy. Craig Ferguson is no different imho.

Craig Ferguson is the most underrated late night host ever. I saw him do standup once and he’s just great.
Welp, new hour long analysis on something I have no idea about but will happily listen to anyway, that's my sign to get back to work.

2. He mixed all his talents and 'flaws' into perfection.
3. He walked the fine line, often on one foot, never stumbling into poor taste.
4. He never resorted to mocking someone to increase laughs.

Yeah I think people commented and upvoted comments before finishing the video.
However, a different
level of magnitude)?
Warm milk helps you sleep though. That's way more than corden has ever done for us
More like warm milk strained through a dirty sock.

True, why the heck did James get an Emmy 🤦🏼♀️
An entire James corden movie no phone or drink a gallon of sun-heated chocolate milk.
My body will recover from the milk.
I still don’t understand why you would order an omelette if you had a serious egg allergy lmao
Is.. that REALLY what happened? 💀
I dont rhink it was specifically an egg allergy
High end restaurants and cafes.
what’s so despicable is that he advocated for lower writers wages when he himself started as a writer.
Yeah I think it was glossed over. That's not like snapping because you had a bad day.
The jolly fat person is one of life's curses
I think good looking people get away with more at times as people can be swayed and taken in by looks (human nature)
It’s not that people dislike Corden because he’s fat- people dislike him because he’s a complete knob head - it’s just maybe he’d have got more of a pass if he looked better.
If he wasn't fat he wouldn't have become popular, as he has no real talent.
It sucks because he could’ve been a decent comedian if he went the more straight man route (ex: when he played The Baker in the film adaptation of Into the Woods), but no, he wanted to be the goofy guy and failed miserably at it
Jonah Hill without the cringe, but also without the charm.
I liked his character in _Doctor Who_ cos he was just a simple wholesome guy. He never had super ugly moments and was pretty sympathetic. Like, a much cuter version of his character from _Into the Woods_
Just a family man that didn't need to be the comic relief all the time
@@spectre9340ah yes!! I almost forgot about Craig
I dunno', I think he was the worst part of that movie.
@spectre9340 Yes that character was fantastic. It’s why I initially had a favorable opinion of James. Then I saw his mire annoying roles, and how he behaved generally. It was annoying. Not evil or anything, but annoying.
I don't think John Oliver, Jon Stewart and Trevor Noah count as late night show hosts. They are political commentary shows, where comedy is a feature.
Jon Stewart likes Ukrainian nazis since he got his mind right
Does John Oliver even have celebrity interviews?
@virginiavanni8061 It was seen more on older episodes, pretty quickly celebrities began appearing in goofy skits and songs rather than actual interviews.
The truth at the heart of all this is late night TV is the canary in the coal mine for the death of network tv. Since the time of Letterman v Leno, the decline and fragmentation of audiences due to cable, then TH-cam, then social media and streaming, Late night has been ahead of the curve for programming as a whole. (with the possible exception of children's programming/cartoons)
The fact that the one lifeline they've found to keep their heads above water is TH-cam, shows they're woefully behind the times even today.
16:55 Well, I feel called out. I didn't realize there were two Late Night Jimmies, and figured that at any given time, it was just one guy who I didn't pay much attention to!
Lmaoooo sameeeee 💀
So the moral of the story is: If you're allergic to eggs, don't order the omelette.
Colour me schooled.
The More You Know 💫
This video is way more charitable to the man than I would have expected. Well done on you, TRO, for giving him a fair shake and not having this video be a 2-hour lampooning session.
"Anodes cathodes and all other electrolites" soooo iconic lol
The thing that rubs me the wrong way about Corden is it feels everything he does is inauthentic. When he's cheerful he doesn't come across as genuinely happy. It's instead this projected attitude that is like a kindergarten teacher masking inner rage and contempt.
Agree. Couldnt stand the show, he become the screaming man. Too loud and inability to ond with his guests. Which is why I liked Ferguson and Norton. Conversations, not all forced skits.
Exactly
Let's get it!
if james corden was a song, he’d be the song ‘happy’ by pharrell. i can’t explain why but it’s the same genre
Yep. That checks out.
I think it's something to with a cold hearted, cynical operator selling a product that is the polar opposite to their character.
Craig Ferguson's Dr. Who sketch is the best.
Carpool kareoke was a plague on the internet💀
Craig Ferguson was a one of a kind entertainer and host. James Corden is slightly more enjoyable than a tapeworm.
18:22 Graham's show is the best. It has been since he started. Everybody trust the man. Even when it devolves into a cringey topic, Graham will wrangle it back in with a resounding laugh.
Agree 💯🇬🇧
While I fully understand Craig Ferguson's desire to move on from late night, one half of me is still sour that his replacement 'choice' was Corden while the other half is laughing at the cruel joke he played on the viewers by that 'choice'.. 😀
Also in regard to Craig's 'digital viability' while on the Late Late Show I would say that was a mistake by the network, considering how many millions of views the fan uploads of Craig's interview sections have.
I dont know what it is about both James Corden and Jimmy Fallen that I've always found off putting. Guess my instincts are right about one at least 😅
Jimmy fallen less. Jimmy Kimmel though? He is…. There is something so off about that guy
You're right about Fallon too. He's a company man. He's a fence sitting, corporate shill, who had to be shamed into publicly supporting one of the big union strikes a while back, iirc.
He's no John Oliver.
@@torysings7468jimmy Kimmel is definitely a weirdo imo, ever since I found out he created “the man show” he’s left a bad taste in my mouth
Its their overly fake personas
James Corden tried to the whole "theater kid who is self-aware" thing, minus the self-awareness
Never know what to expect from you, TRO, but this wasn't it. Absolutely delightfully pleased! ❤
Mate, by the time I noticed I was watching a sponsor spot, I was so engrossed in it I didn't have the heart to skip. Class.
7:11 kim possible is my actual text tone so I genuinely thought i got a text and then was convinced my phone was about to break because I knew I heard the text but couldn’t see one. So basically you nearly gaslit me into insanity. Other than that love your channel tro
I’m in awe of the editors! Great job!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻another great video TRO 😊
Craig Ferguson was on another level. 😂 LOVED his show.
I live in NYC and walk by Balthazar constantly. I feel like it’s a place where celebrities go to yell at service workers at this point.
That ad section was actually so fun, first time i’ve watched an ad read through and not skipped!!
If you like fun adds i cannot recommend internet historian more
it's crazy that the worst thing you can be online is annoying and kind of cringe. endless harassment, even death threats, for just being some average gen x comedian show host.
This is easily my favorite video analysis you've ever made.
I don't doubt also that for people who found him annoying/disingenuous in the first place ,seeing him EVERYWHERE didn't help.
that has to be my favorite intro to a sponsor, i dont think ive ever watched a sponsor all the way through before this
The death of Late Night TV comes from one source.
I thought this as well
I maintain that they picked the wrong james to replace craig ferguson.
@@petrolhead0387 acaster on would i lie to you is Bob mortimer levels of absolute chaos
I love how he says we’re a bit past for new years yet I’m watching it on New Years Eve lol😂
Nothing makes a day better like a nice, short little video from TRO.
No, no. Don’t look at the time stamp.
I said DON’T LOOK!
Gavin and Stacy was Hilarious…. Whenever he wasn’t on screen acting the fool
I really like that clip of james where he yells, oh wait, that is all of them
I have NEVER heard of The Late Late Night Show until James Corden and Carpool Karaoke. Thanks for yet another good video essay.
The level of talent that James brings to the table makes me think anyone is absolutely capable of making it anywhere, talent or no talent.
That comment and visual showing that it was expected to release in december 2023, but instead would be March 2024, when it released in April 2024, really sums up your schedule TRO. But it's all gravy, because these videos are so well done and worth every moment I wait for them.
Thanks for the video, see you next time chap.
As soon as I hear your voice the world is calm and right again…
James Corden is truly the male Amy Schumer
Bro needs to post more often with these long videos. It’s what I look forward to at the end of a long day
Do you realise how much work goes into making high quality videos like this? It takes time. Dude has a life.
This is a short video for TRO 😂
James Corden’s two guest appearances on Doctor Who are some of my favorite 11th Doctor episodes
If you ever wanna do a good story, do a full biography on Craig please. He deserves it.
Your rocket money ad was too funny😂
getting a new TRO upload is so refreshing, I forget often what a truly great video essay looks like. respect to James putting quality over quantity with his scripts + love to the editors who put the work in to make these possible!
I know what I was watching and who I was learning about, but I still rolled my eyes the moment you said James Corden's name. Each time I hear about him, it's against my will.
(I always try to find time to watch your videos, even if it's about a topic I don't really care about, like James Corden.)
Happy happy, new TRO vid ❤
Business Insider described him as “the most influential producer in television.”'
Edit: nope james was hired then ben came on but he and ben did league of their own and bunch of other stuff and ben is how james got the friends reunion and they did the tonys together too.
*hands over a tub of popcorn*
"I'm allergic to eggs, what should I order? Omelet"
I mean you can be just allergic to the white or the yolk. Which is easily separated.
Checks out
Johnny Carson was a REALLY good interviewer.
Telling me James Corden is insufferable person is like making a video explaining water is wet
Thanks for the video.
56:49 was really confusing to me for a moment because I'm not used to people using the term "fortnight" for its literal meaning.
